Looking Ahead - June 27

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

We have found a couple of nicely bred 2-year-olds that are worth watching on debut on Tuesday. The first is a Brazen Beau colt, who is closely related to the multiple Group 1 star Defier (Dehere {USA}), while the second is a half-brother to the 2020 R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic heroine Away Game (Snitzel).

Launch Sequence, 2-year-old colt (Brazen Beau x She’s A Youeffoh {Starcraft {NZ}})

This colt was offered by KBL Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where Trilogy Racing and CB Bloodstock paid $250,000 for him.

Launch Sequence is the first foal from a four-time winner and she herself is a half-sister to the Listed scorer Traveston Girl (Flying Spur).

The colt’s second dam, Milande (Dehere {USA}), was an unraced sister to the top-class galloper Defier - a winner of three races at the highest level, including the 2002 Queen Elizabeth S.

Other stakes winners on Launch Sequence’s page include Triscay (Marscay), La Baraka (Euclase) and Tsuimai.

Liam Riordan has the ride aboard the Mathew Ellerton-trained colt.

Kembla Grange, Race 2, 1.20pm AEST, Phar Lap Avenue Mdn Plate, $40,000, 1200m

Pirate, 2-year-old colt (Merchant Navy x Elusive Wonder {Elusive Quality {USA}})

This colt was consigned by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and was knocked down to Michael Freedman Racing and Julian Blaxland Bloodstock (FBAA) for $360,000.

Pirate is the ninth living foal of a stakes performer and the colt is a half-sister to the former star filly/mare Away Game. She won more than $3.75 million in prizemoney, and although she never tasted the ultimate success, she did score at Group 2 level and placed second on three ocassions in top company. Away Game fetched $4 million at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, with Yulong Investments buying her from the Newgate-Killora Consignment. The Listed victress Modern Wonder (Snitzel) is also a half-sister to Pirate.

The Freedman-trained juvenile, who has placed third in two of his five trials ahead of his debut, will be handled by Tom Sherry.
