Looking Ahead - July 6

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Thursday at Gosford, we look at a filly from the precocious dam Jeanneau (Beneteau), plus a filly whose dam is the Group 1 winner Rewaaya (NZ) (Singspiel {Ire}).

Gosford, Race 1, 12.50pm AEST, Taperell Rutledge Solicitors 2YO Mdn, $40,000, 1000m

Tautou, 2-year-old filly (Zoustar x Jeanneau {Beneteau})

This 2-year-old filly was bred at Widden Stud from the Beneteau mare Jeanneau, who is a half-sister to the Smart Missile Group-placegetter Aim Smart. Jeanneau was a very precocious juvenile herself. She was second on debut in the Listed Gimcrack S. and then fifth to Extreme Choice in the R. Listed Inglis Nursery.

Tautou is her third foal and she was consigned by Widden to the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She was bought for $475,000 by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott alongside Kestrel Thoroughbreds.

The filly is yet to race for Tulloch Lodge. She has trialled twice this winter with mixed results, and she comes into this debut with jockey Jean Van Overmeire and barrier 11.

Gosford, Race 3, 2.05pm AEST, Sneddon Bros Mdn, $40,000, 1200m

Zarrose, 2-year-old filly (Exosphere x Rewaaya {NZ} {Singspiel {Ire}})

This filly was bred by the Shadwell operation in Australia. She is a daughter of the broodmare Rewaaya, who won the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. and G3 Let’s Elope S. She was also Group 1 placed on four occasions, including in the Thousand Guineas and Australian S.

Initially, Zarrose was an $80,000 weanling sold to Willow Vale at the Shadwell Dispersal via the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. Thereafter, the filly was consigned by Sledmere Stud to the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, where she was bought for $280,000 by Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA).

Zarrose is trained by the Snowden team at Randwick and she’s had extensive trials this year. In her latest on June 20, she was fourth. In this debut she will have jockey Tom Sherry from barrier 10 in a vastly more experienced field.

Looking Back

Our Looking Ahead selections on Wednesday were luckless. At Randwick-Kensington, House Of Cards (Exceed And Excel) was fifth in the opener, while Northern Eyes (Zoustar) was a scratching in the same race. At Sandown-Hillside, Pickaxe (Pierro) was second.
