Saturday preview: six things to keep an eye on

11 min read
It's another quiet weekend in regards to black-type racing but there are hints of spring in the air with the running of feature sprints in Melbourne and Sydney whilst a popular galloper attempts to break a modern-day weight-carrying record in the G3 Winter Cup in New Zealand. And there are pedigrees of great interest in the US.

Aurie's Star H. - the little race that could!

When the Pattern system emerged in the 1970s, races were granted black-type status on account of their prestige and record of being contested and won by top-class horses.

Over the years there have been downgrades and upgrades - the latter mainly with races which have been stakes or quality races from the start and have improved further over time.

The Aurie's Star H., at Flemington being run as Race 7, however is unique, a race which forced its own way into its current Group 3 status (having been run as a Listed event between 2005 and 2010) on the back of its support from big trainers, most notably the late, great Bart Cummings.

For many years he used the dash down the Flemington straight as a kicking off point for his spring carnival horses and other stables followed suit with the then non-black-type event won by the likes of Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton) and Sports (Zeditave) with a host of high-class performers finishing behind the winners.

And in recent years the race that used to be run on a Wednesday afternoon has continued to prove a decent form reference, won by the subsequent Group 1 winners Niconero (Danzero), Temple Of Boom (Piccolo {GB}), Hey Doc (Duporth) and Voodoo Lad (I Am Invincible).

Earning its place as the feature race of the day, the Aurie's Star sees a field of 10 face the starter and so open is this running that four of those are quoted at single-figure odds.

Despite coming back in distance Cause For Concern (Worthy Cause) has opened favourite and the 4-year-old's record of four wins (including three of his last four) from eight starts is hard to fault.

It'sourtime (Time For War) is also racing in good heart, coming off a tidy G3 Bletchingly S. third, a race in which General Beau (Brazen Beau) was run down only late when attempting to record his first win since the spring of 2021.

Wyong visitor Much Much Better (Stratum) faces a rise in class but has a healthy weight drop and hard to get past will be the gutsy Dance To Dubai (Pride Of Dubai) who dug deep when leading throughout at the same track three weeks ago.

Missile S. - classy winter sprinters

Big Parade (Deep Field) and I Am Me (I Am Invincible) are fighting out favouritism for this feature sprinting contest at Rosehill as Race 8, one that has been won by 42 horses since its inception in 1978. A handful of those were already Group 1 winners whilst 11 of them went onto win at the elite level.

Spark Of Life (Nine Carat {USA}), Dance Hero (Danzero), Sweet Idea (Snitzel), Tycoon Tara (Written Tycoon), Pierata, Campaign King, Padstow (Francis Bacon {Ire}), Lonhro, Eduardo (Host {Chi}), Razor Sharp (Steel Pulse {GB}) and Brawny Spirit (Rustic Amber {Ire})... certainly a nice list of quality campaigners.

And it's a good field this time around with Ingratiating (Frosted {USA}) returning to Sydney having taken out the G3 Bletchingly S. in Melbourne. Last spring's G1 Caulfield Guineas hero Golden Mile (Astern) returns as does the regally bred mare Argentia (Frankel {GB}).

The lightly raced and promising 5-year-old Wewillrock (NZ) (El Roca) split Big Parade and In Secret (I Am Invincible) when trialling nicely at Warwick Farm and another horse boasting an excellent record is the six-time winner Deepour (Exosphere).

The two favoured runners have both been burning the tracks at the trials with Big Parade - who makes his debut for the Joseph Pride stable winning a Warwick Farm heat by just over 20l! I Am Me's winning margins have not been as big, but she too seems to be flying.

Winter Cup - Justaskme again the one to beat

What a grand campaigner Justaskme (NZ) (No Excuse Needed {GB}) is and Saturday at Riccarton Park sees the tough and talented 8-year-old the one to beat in Race 9 as he vies for his sixth success at stakes level.

Racing in great heart - charging late to take out his second Listed Opunake Cup at New Plymouth two weeks ago, the bay has won 12 of his 34 starts and has a further seven placings to his credit.

Included in that tally is a fast-finishing and somewhat unlucky second in this same race two years ago and supporters will be happy to see him go one better this time around.

Those likely to mount the biggest challenges are Belardo Boy (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) who had no luck behind Justaskme last time out, Kick On (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) who has been in consistent form and Zelenski (NZ) (Shocking) who was strong to the line winning two in a row prior to his last-start fighting Oamaru Cup third.

An historic race run since the 1890s, the G3 Winter Cup is a handicap and Justaskme does have a bit of history against him as he carries a hefty 61kg; 6.5kg more than his nearest rival. It has been decades since a Winter Cup winner carried over 60kg but connections are confident that the horse is primed to run another big race.

The young gun sires - those with runners who have just turned three

The first weekend of the new season sees a number of nice young stallions represented by runners - horses whose first progeny have just turned three.

In the third race at Flemington, a 1410-metre contest, Widden Stud play a big hand with two of their sires amongst the 10 runners - the Group 1 sprinters Trapeze Artist and Written By.

The former has the Peter Devitt homebred Flying Concello aiming for three in a row on the back of determined victories at Bendigo and Sandown whilst the latter's stakes-placed son Gangitano strips fitter for his solid first-up performance.

Coolmore Stud's Saxon Warrior (Jpn) is not shuttling this year but his supporters will be keeping an eye on the $400,000 Magic Millions graduate Warlords who won nicely at his Sale debut as a short-priced favourite in Race 3.

It is a trio of Queensland stallions who have runners at the Murray Bridge meeting in South Australia - Encryption, Lean Mean Machine and Performer with the debutants Enciphering and Lady Means Business and the Victorian-trained favourite Esecutore who resumes off good jump-out form.

In New Zealand Bezique (NZ) by Rich Hill's Ace High has accepted to run in two races at Ruakaka and he is joined in one of those races (Race 2) by another of the breed in Richie's Dream (NZ) who was runner-up in a recent synthetic trial.

Ace High | Standing at Rich Hill Stud

The G1 VRC Derby and G1 Spring Champion S. winner also has High Five (NZ) debuting in the third race at Riccarton, a race which also sees a couple of 3-year-olds having their second starts - Voice Over (NZ) (U S Navy Flag {USA}) and L'Ament (NZ) (Eminent {Ire}) both just out of the placings at their first outings.

Cambridge Stud's G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Embellish (NZ) has a nice one in the shape of Whiskey Lies (NZ) and he looks a top chance to make it four in a row when contesting the third at Ruakaka.

The first-uppers and imports

There are a number of nice types kicking off their campaigns at the metropolitan meetings on Saturday, kicking off with the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained River Noire (Winning Rupert) in the opening event at Flemington. Last seen late last year, she has impressed winning two of three and on the back of solid jump-out form has opened up favourite.

In Her Stride (Stratum Star) also seems to be coming along nicely, the G3 Vamos S. placegetter kicks off in the second race at Flemington and has a tidy first-up record. As does last spring's G1 VRC Oaks third home Queen Air (Toronado {Ire}) who lines up in Race 4.

Race 9 on the card is a busy one for first-uppers with Berkeley Square (Territories {Ire}) the early favourite off a jump-out success. Close up in the G1 Caulfield Guineas, he is a Listed and Group 2 winner. Bob and Sandra Peters have one runner - Devoted (Xtravagant {NZ}) with a touch of class and also of interest is the G3 Hobart Cup winner Ho Ho Khan (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) and the Group 2-placed Pippali (Ilovethiscity) who makes her debut for the Moody/Coleman team.

And in the last race at Headquarters, going out a short-priced favourite, is Benedetta (Hellbent) who created such a fine impression winning four in a row over the summer/autumn months.

The latter part of the Rosehill card sees a few resuming including two nice types by Maurice (Jpn) - in the seventh the G2 Stutt S. runner up Foujita San returning gelded whilst in the last race the lightly raced and promising Ausbred Rising Sun reappears.

Foujita San | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

The ninth race in Sydney has several horses resuming - the last start Group 1-placed mudlark Polly Grey (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}), the G3 Chairman's H. winner Kalapour (Ire) (War Command {USA}), the G3 Hobart Cup winner Military Mission (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), The King's horse Chalk Stream (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and the G3 Manion Cup runner-up Raging Bull (Bull Point).

There are also three kicking off in the eighth race at Belmont - Alaskan God (Playing God) the favourite with Buster Bash (Trade Fair {GB}) also being kept safe whilst the stayer Stafford's Lad (Demerit) will be at his best over further.

Also of interest on Saturday are three racing in Australia for the first time - all at Flemington. In the sixth race the Group 3-placed Garachico (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}) races for the Corstens stable; currently big odds having been out of the placings in several jump-outs/trials.

Another unfancied by punters is Win O'Clock (GB) (Australia {GB}) in the eighth race at Flemington - the 7-year-old out of the winner's circle since a success over 2816 metres in November 2020.

The Test S. - America's star fillies

First run at Saratoga in 1922, the G1 Test S. is one of the United States' biggest tests of 3-year-old filly class and an important lead-in into other major races such as the G1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and the G1 Alabama S.

Eight fillies face the starter in the 2023 edition with three of those being daughters of Spendthrift Farm's star Into Mischief (USA), the four times US Champion Sire who has done such a great job siring 132 stakes winners.

And one of his best is the in-form Pretty Mischievous (USA) who at her last two outings has claimed Group 1 success in the Kentucky Oaks and the Acorn S. Beaten only twice in eight starts, she is known as a filly who just as much as she needs to - her exciting style seeing her prevail in close finishes.

Also by Into Mischief are Clearly Unhinged (USA) - a lightly raced filly who has won two of three starts with a Group 2 fourth in between - and Interpolate (USA) who has been competitive in Group company at her last two starts.

The most experienced runner of the field is Tappin Josie (USA) (Anchor Down) who has won six of her 14 starts (one of those at Listed level) whilst the filly really bred for this race is Jersey Pearl (USA) (Bee Jersey {USA}).

What a fascinating pedigree this up-and-comer (she has won three of six including her last two in lesser company) boasts - her high-class grandam Jersey Girl (USA) (Belong To Me {USA}) also being the dam of her grandsire Jersey Town (USA).

And Jersey Girl won the 1998 Test S.

There is another link to the history of the race with the 1976 winner Ivory Wand (USA) (Sir Ivor {USA}) being the fifth dam of Munnys Gold (USA) (Munnings {USA}) who was fourth in the Acorn S.

Also of interest is the Acorn S. runner-up Dorth Vader (USA) (Girvin {USA}) who has Australian relations including the G3 BTC Classic winner Platinum Kingdom (Magnus) and the unbeaten Maple Leaf Mel (USA) (Cross Traffic {USA}).

Entain: a dream for Ellis and a breath of fresh air for Thompson

8 min read
It has been a positive few months in New Zealand, with exciting initiatives and much-needed support being delivered to participants. The Thoroughbred Report caught up with David Ellis CNZM, Te Akau Racing principal and John Thompson, managing director of Rich Hill Stud, and president of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association to hear their thoughts on the recent news.

Cover image courtesy of Trish Dunell

It has been no secret that domestic racing in New Zealand has been suffering from low prizemoney levels, the lack of support and financial incentive saw many participants struggle to stay involved in the game, and whenever a potential star unveiled themselves, it was always the wise decision to sell the galloper to whoever came knocking with the biggest cheque.

The lack of prizemoney flowed into the breeding industry, with many breeders hesitant to breed thoroughbreds with the realisation it just wasn’t worth the financial risk.

Despite the struggles the industry has faced, the Kiwis have a long and proud tradition of producing elite horses from the earliest days to the modern day, and many of their best are now in the Australian Hall of Fame; three of the inaugural inductees were all bred and raised in New Zealand: Carbine (NZ), Phar Lap (NZ) (Night Raid {GB}) and Tulloch (NZ).

However, times are changing, and we could almost feel a renaissance of the New Zealand domestic racing and breeding industry.

Entain, a leading global sports betting, gaming and interactive entertainment group, has entered New Zealand, signing a 25-year partnership with TAB NZ and will commit NZ$900 million to the New Zealand racing industry over the next five years.

Alongside the five-year partnership announcement with New Zealand Bloodstock, with the support of NZTR, will see the prizemoney increase for one of New Zealand’s great racedays: The Karaka Millions Twilight meeting.

The announcements have given optimism and a pep in the step of many participants whose livelihoods rely on the racing and breeding of thoroughbreds.

David Ellis, Te Akau Racing principal CNZM and John Thompson, managing director of Rich Hill Stud and President of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ have had a lifetime of experience within racing and breeding domestically.

The two men hardly need any introductions, they are highly respected and successful identities domestically and internationally, and the recent news has put smiles on their faces.

A dream come true for Ellis

Ellis, who runs the hugely successful Te Akau Racing, is in the midst of getting the operations satellite stable at Cranbourne in Australia up-and-running as several of the star tangerine colour-bearers return for the spring, also had time to meet the senior directors Entain.

David Ellis | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell

“Yesterday (Thursday), I met the senior directors of Entain for the first time. I was so excited when I came away,” Ellis told TTR AusNZ.

“I’ve never had such good news in New Zealand racing. This is the first excellent news that we’ve had. It’s exciting to have people who understand and enjoy racing and want to race horses.

“The senior management (at Entain) all just understand racing so clearly. It’s inspiring what they’ve prepared to put in,” he said.

“I’ve never had such good news in New Zealand racing. This is the first excellent news that we’ve had. It’s exciting to have people (Entain) who understand and enjoy racing and want to race horses.” - David Ellis

Ellis was eager to highlight the relief the prizemoney increases would bring to those who operate domestically.

“For somebody that’s been in racing all our lives, this is something we’ve dreamt of happening,” Ellis told TTR AusNZ.

“It’s a big relief and brilliant for the thousands of people that earn their living from our great industry. Because without this sort of news, I think we were seriously in trouble, and now we’re going from a position of being in trouble to the most exciting period of my lifetime.

“... without this sort of news, I think we were seriously in trouble, and now we’re going from a position of being in trouble to the most exciting period of my lifetime.” - David Ellis

“With stake money going up, I also hope that will encourage more breeders to breed their mares, which we’re desperate for, and it’ll encourage a lot of people to race horses, knowing that if they get a good one, they’re going to make money.”

Ellis, who has been a strong supporter of the Karaka Millions raceday, winning last year’s R. Listed Karaka Millions 2YO with Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin {Jpn}), is hopeful that the star galloper will represent the operation in the R. Listed TAB Karaka Millions 3YO now worth NZ$1.5 million in 2024.

“Entain are getting Trackside back which used to be a world-class channel. It’s positive news right across the board,” Ellis said.

“Tokyo Tycoon will be aimed at the NZ$1.5 million Karaka 3YO race (R. Listed TAB Karaka Millions 3YO). I won my first race in 1978, and to be competing for that sort of money it’s something that I’ve dreamt of happening for New Zealand.

“It’s just good news for all the people working so hard in the industry. It’s a great time to be involved in racing, and Karen (Fenton-Ellis), and I am really looking forward to the new season, which has started on a good note.”

A breath of fresh air for Thompson

Thompson is the managing director of Rich Hill Stud. This hugely successful nursery is enjoying a season to remember with the emergence of Proisir, who was crowned the Champion New Zealand General Sire/Champion New Zealand 3-Year-Old Sire, and whose progeny earnt more than NZ$4 million in the 2022/23 season.

Proisir, Champion New Zealand General Sire/Champion New Zealand 3-Year-Old Sire | Standing at Rich Hill Stud

Proisir isn’t the only stallion capable of producing an elite runner on the roster; he is joined by Champion New Zealand Second Season Sire and Champion New Zealand 2-Year-Old Sire, Satono Aladdin (Jpn), and the vastly underrated Shocking and Vadamos (Fr), with the young gun Ace High rounding out the roster.

Thompson also heads the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (NZTBA), representing and advocating for New Zealand breeders on various national and international issues.

Thompson echoed the thoughts of Ellis.

“It’s a huge positive. At this stage, I’d say it’s a breath of fresh air,” Thompson told TTR AusNZ.

“I’ve had a few initial dealings with the Entain guys, and they’re just, you know, they’re very switched on. They are passionate about the industry in general, breeding, racing, and hunting.

“It’s a huge positive. At this stage, I’d say it’s a breath of fresh air. They (Entain) are passionate about the industry in general, breeding, racing, and hunting.” - John Thompson

“Getting these announcements before the breeding season is a bit of a godsend. The production costs for breeding and keeping horses in work were getting hard. Participants were dropping, so this injection of funds was certainly needed.

“Once the money starts flowing back into the industry, I think we will see a real difference. We have had people come into the industry before, CEOS and such, and say they are going to do this and that, but I think in this case, these guys (Entain) are certainly different,” Thompson said.

“They’re a different kind of fish, really, they’ve come in with a pan, and it’s in their interest to make it work as much as ours.”

John Thompson | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell

NZ$1 million race gets thumbs up

Thompson was also complimentary of a new NZ$1 million open mile race for 4-year-olds that will be held on Karaka Millions night.

“It’s a race for 4-year-olds that is worth NZ$1 million. I think it will benefit the industry. The top 3-year-olds can earn their way. But for a horse that is still a good horse but not quite the top level, they get sold by connections. But there is an option there with that race, and there’s a plan there.

“They (Entain/NZB) obviously want to see these horses retained in work because we all know that betting turnovers are very closely related to field sizes, so again, I think it’s a well-thought-out plan, and it’ll give those sorts of second-tier horses a chance to aim at a million dollar, which they wouldn’t usually have.

“For people, you know, the last decade has been all about survival mode, keeping your head above water, and hopefully, this will inject a lot of confidence and investment in all sectors back into the industry.

Warwick Farm trials: returning Think It Over sends spring warning to opposition

4 min read

Written by Keely Mckitterick

The trial action moved to Warwick Farm on Friday. The southwest suburb of Sydney played host to 19 heats, with plenty of stars turning up to ramp up their spring preparations.

The meeting also welcomed back the Kerry Parker-trained Think It Over (So You Think {NZ}) to the track after a layoff from injury.

Heat 1 on the course proper over 1000 metres kicked off the action on Friday. The heat contained the Group 1 winners Duais (Shamus Award), Think It Over and Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel) alongside the smart performers Buenos Noches (Supido) and the Frankel (GB)-sired imports Francesco Guardi (Ire) and Soulcombe (GB).

The Annabel Neasham-trained Mo’unga, with Sam Clipperton in the saddle, scored narrowly from the returning Think It Over, who was reunited with Nash Rawiller.

They were followed home by Buenos Noches, Francesco Guardi, Soulcombe and last but not least, Duais, who was asked very little throughout the 1000-metre journey.

Stepping out in Heat 2 over 900 metres on the course proper, the James Cummings-trained and Godolphin-owned Parisal (Astern) with James McDonald aboard. The progressive 4-year-old mare scored comfortably from the G1 Australian Derby winner Major Beel (NZ) (Savabeel) followed by Arts (Xtravagant {NZ}), Special Sway (NZ) (Sweynesse) and My Oberon (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

In Heat 3, the Cummings and Godolphin combo was at it again with Cylinder (Exceed And Excel), who emulated his half-sister to Parisal to take out the 900-metre course proper event.

Zac Lloyd partnered with the G1 Golden Slipper runner-up to win from On The Lead (I Am Invincible) and Autumn Ballet (The Autumn Sun); they were followed by the Group 1 winner Hinged (Worthy Cause), Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Osipenko (NZ) (Pierro) who was allowed to stride out at under his own steam.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott sent out their G1 Melbourne Cup fancy Goldman (NZ) (Verdi {NZ}) in Heat 4 over 1200 metres. The talented stayer was ridden by Regan Bayliss and found enough to hold Decimus (Dundeel {NZ}).

Lionel (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was an intriguing runner in Heat 4 albeit unplaced; the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained import was having his second trial of preparation in Australia after running third in the Listed Noel Murless S. at Ascot. The gelding had won the Listed Cocked Hat at Goodwood, which saw him thrown into the G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh, although well-beaten in that event behind Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Heat 7 saw Doull (Snitzel) step out for the first time for Annabel Neasham after being transferred from the Anthony and Sam Freedman yard in Victoria.

The entire is co-owned by Rosemont Stud, looked to be one of the most exciting gallopers in training, and even was a one-time favourite for the G1 Coolmore Stud S. but has been underwhelming in subsequent runs. Ridden by Ryan Maloney, he finished second to the Joseph Pride-trained Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}).

Other trials of note were Heat 10 over 813 metres, won by the last-start winner Taormina (Written Tycoon) from the Waterhouse and Bott stable, who defeated another last-start winner in Griff (Trapeze Artist).

Taormina | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

The Robert Quinn stable looks to have a smart prospect in Siovy Dane (Sioux Nation {USA}), who has put together two consecutive winning trial performances. The 3-year-old filly was ridden by Tom Sherry in Heat 13 over 813 metres and scored by 1l Just Wai (Va Pensiero) and Weeping Woman (Lonhro) 3.14l away in third.

Peter and Paul Snowden’s well-bred Bravely (Zoustar) won dominantly by 2.25l from Skiesthelimit (Maurice {Jpn}) in Heat 14 over 810 metres.

The 3-year-old colt is from the I Am Invincible mare She’s So High, who won the G3 Proud Miss S. and is from the family of Deep Field and Shooting To Win.

Bravely was a $500,000 yearling purchase by China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and Trilogy Racing from the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Rounding out proceedings on the grass was Heat 16 over 810 metres, which saw the return of the Maher and Eustace-trained Tiz Invincible (I Am Invincible).

The 3-year-old filly showed talent as a juvenile running second in the G2 Percy Sykes S. and looks to have returned in good form on Friday when she strode to a 1.2l victory with James McDonald in the saddle.

Goodwood Day 3: Al Husn contiunes Shadwell and Crowley's hot run

Thursday was Day 3 of the Glorious Goodwood Festival with the Group 1 event being a highly competitive renewal of the Qatar Nassau S.

The event, although only attracting six fillies and mares, included some of the finest across Europe. John and Thady Gosden saddled up the defending Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}), while Aidan O’Brien put the finishing touches on the tough Above The Curve (USA) (American Pharoah {USA}) and Christopher Head sent out his star filly Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}).

However, it was the underrated Shadwell colour-bearer and Roger Varian-trained Al Husn (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) who defied all in a tactically run affair to score her maiden Group 1 success with the flying Jim Crowley in the saddle. Running into the placings was Nashwa and Above The Curve, while Blue Rose Cen was unplaced, but arguably unlucky not to finish closer.

Varian was effusive of the underrated mare post-race.

“Al Husn is a remarkable filly and she has won seven of her last eight now,” said Roger Varian after his charge joined the who's-who of elite-level distaffers and became his breakthrough in the 183-year-old contest. “The truth is none of us really knew how good she was, because she is one of those who just beats what is in front of her and is never particularly flashy. She has such an admirable attitude. We thought we would come here and run very well, but I am obviously delighted, and delighted Sheikha Hissa is here.

“To have a Group 1 for her and with a homebred filly like this, it's fantastic. The Nassau is a fantastic race, steeped in prestige and history. It is one of the magical races for fillies to win. It will be forever in her stud book and hopefully when she's done racing, she can go to the farm and be a great mare for them. It is very special for us, we went very close a couple of years ago in the same colours with Zeyaadah, so it's nice to go one better today. She is not the biggest filly, but she is very well made. We trained her mum, Hadaatha, who was third in the (G1) Prix de l'Opera, so we always had faith that Hadaatha would breed a very good one.”

“To have a Group 1 for her (Al Husn) and with a homebred filly like this, it's fantastic. The Nassau is a fantastic race, steeped in prestige and history. It is one of the magical races for fillies to win.” - Roger Varian

Rider Jim Crowley's fortunes took an upward turn, and his winning percentage was a small measure of compensation to offset an excessive sanction imposed earlier in the week for his ride aboard Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot. “Al Husn was so tough there,” he said. “She is not a big filly, but she is a little terrier who tries and is so tough. She has improved with every run and it's just great to nick a race like that with her.

“She is a very good filly and we were in the right place at the right time. It is the nature of the track and, when I saw the French filly get that (inside) draw, I thought they were going to need a bit of luck. I had to commit on her a long way out and we had the luck today. It was a steady, tactical affair and she was in the right place, but she still had to kick on two out and fend them off, which she did. It was a great performance, Roger's done a fantastic job with her and she's just kept on improving all season.

“Coming here today, she still had to step up, and she did. She might possibly get further, but we have never really thought about it. It is something we can talk about.”

Crowley and the Shadwell team are in a purple patch of form, having won The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. hero Hukum and the G1 Prince Of Wales’s S. with Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

Al Husun becomes the 258th stakes winner for Dubawi (Ire).

Vandeek shows class

The G2 Richmond S. held for the juveniles was taken out in fine fashion by the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) with Andrea Atzeni in the saddle.

Vandeek had a 1l to spare over Ballymount Boy (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) and Toca Madera (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) who was 5l away in third.

Vandeek was a 625,000gns (AU$1.27 million) joint-topper at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale. He is the fifth foal from the Exceed And Excel mare Mosa Mine (GB). She is related to the top-class sprinter-miler and sire Anabaa (USA).

“He looked pretty special when he won first time out at Nottingham,” Atzeni said. “He's got a bit of a pedigree, he's obviously improved since Nottingham and he showed today how good he is.” Simon Crisford added, “Nothing really took him into the race for as long as we would like today, he was in front too soon and he sort of idled. I think there's tons of improvement to come and I think we'll head for the Prix Morny on August 19. Obviously, that is dependent on Sheikh Khalid's wishes, but he likes to be bold and brave and I'm sure he will want to go for the Group 1. Stamina-wise, he's out of an Exceed And Excel mare, there's tons of speed in his pedigree but he strikes us at home like he will go further. He's big, scopey, he stands over a lot of daylight–he will stay.”

Vandeek is the 15th stakes winner for Havana Grey (GB).

Desert Hero scores in nailbiter

Rounding out the stakes action on Thursday at Glorious Goodwood was the G3 Gordon S. where the King Charles III-owned and William Haggas-trained Desert Hero (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) showed his class and showing he’s on track for a potential tilt at the G1 St Leger in September.

The progressive stayer was ridden by Tom Marquand, making a sustained run from the tail of the six-runner field to deny Chesspiece (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) by a neck in the dying strides. The latter, in turn, finished 3l clear of Canberra Legend (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in third.

Maureen Haggas, the wife of the Newmarket-based trainer, was in charge of the post-race interview.

“It was not the easiest watch, but Tom (Marquand) said he always thought he was going to win,” revealed Maureen Haggas. “The important thing with this horse is getting him switched off early, which he did really well, and I think if you can do that, you can let the rest of the race unfold. Desert Hero has guts, he wants to win and that counts for a lot. Desert Hero could go further and the obvious aim would be the (G1) St Leger. You never really know until you try, but there's no reason not to try. We are so lucky to be training for The King and Queen and to have a horse as good as this, and I am sure they will be enjoying it and good luck to them.”

“Desert Hero has guts, he wants to win and that counts for a lot. Desert Hero could go further and the obvious aim would be the (G1) St Leger.” - Maureen Haggas

Desert Hero is the 108th stakes winner for Sea The Stars (Ire).

Other notable results

Other notable results from the meeting included the Roger Varian-trained Mission To Moon (Ire), who took out the Jaeger-Lecoultre Nursery. Mission To Moon is a son of U S Navy Flag (USA), who was recently acquired by The Oaks Stud in New Zealand and was crowned the Champion New Zealand First Season Sire.

The Dominic Ffrench Davis-trained Ornellaia (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) who won the Tatler British EBF Fillies' S. was also an intriguing result, as she was the second winner on the Thursday card from a mare by Sea The Stars (Ire).

Ornellaia’s dam Namhroodah (Ire), is a daughter of the former Champion racehorse and now ever-increasing influential sire Sea The Stars, while the other daughter to provide him with a result, Hadaatha (Ire) is the dam of Al Husn who took out the feature event.

Registrations for inaugural Equimillion open

On Friday, the registrations for the inaugural $1 million Equimillion have opened. The concept is a partnership between Racing NSW and Equestrian Australia aimed at highlighting the adaptability of thoroughbreds and to show a life after racing is possible.

The Equimillion is strictly for thoroughbreds that have been retired in New South Wales and will be held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre on Saturday, September 30, to Monday, October 2.

Riders and their mounts will compete for $1 million in prizemoney distributed across a minimum 44 class in the disciplines of eventing, showjumping, dressage and showing.

Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding AO said: “Equimillion has the potential to become The Everest of the equestrian world and will be a game changer in terms of providing an enhanced future life for retired thoroughbred racehorses.”

Three winners for Dundeel at Ballarat

The Arrowfield Stud-based Dundeel (NZ) sired three winners on the Ballarat synthetic meeting on Friday. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Queen Of Deels was the first of three, with the 4-year-old mare scoring in Race 2 over 1200 metres with Harry Coffey in the saddle.

Dundeel (NZ) | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

In Race 5 the Thomas Carberry-trained Vino Corona took out the 1500-metre event with Neil Farly aboard, and finally the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Vivideel won Race 7 over 2100 metres when partnered by Coffey.

Dundeel will stand the 2023 breeding season for $82,500 (inc GST).

I Am Me set to fly in Missile

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained I Am Me (I Am Invincible) is set to tackle the G2 Missile S. first-up after winning two trials at Warwick Farm and Rosehill.

The progressive 5-year-old is set to tackle a competitive field that includes the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile (Astern) and Big Parade (Deep Field) who trialled in imperious fashion.

“She’s obviously Group class and hopefully Group 1 class,” Eustace said.

“I don’t think you can be sure of that until she gets her chance over the next couple of months but this is a good test for her (Missile S.).

“I Am Me is a quality mare, she showed that last preparation and the prep before so we look forward to kicking her off.”

O’Brien pleased with It’Sourtime

Victorian-based trainer Danny O’Brien is happy with how his consistent galloper It’Sourtime (Time For War) is heading into Saturday’s G3 Aurie’s Star H. at Flemington.

“He's coming out of a really good run at weight-for-age and looks really well handicapped,” O'Brien told RSN.

It'sourtime | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

“He's a horse that is so consistent, but he's run a lot more seconds than what he has won, and he hasn't paid the penalty of having another seven or eight ratings points which he could easily have. I can’t see why he won’t run well for us again.”

A victory on Saturday could see the son of Time For War head to Sydney for the G3 Show County Quality at Randwick on August 19.

Win O’Clock looking to make up for lost time

The Matthew Williams-trained Win O’Clock (GB) (Australia {GB}) is set to make his long-awaited return to racing on Saturday after sustaining a tendon injury.

The OTI Racing-owned import was trained by Roger Charlton in the United Kingdom, winning five races, before being imported to Australia and sent to John O’Shea, before the tendon injury saw the gelding undergo another stable change to Williams.

“He’s shown ability overseas and he’s in a great spot the horse, we’re really pleased with Win O’Clock,” Williams said.

“But he’s obviously been a long time off the scene and having had a few in this same situation they always take a couple of runs to get them back to peak fitness. If Win O’Clock runs in the first half on Saturday, I’ll be happy.”

Win O’Clock will contest the VRC Member Lionel Moss Trophy over 1620 metres at Flemington.

Queenslanders to take Missile again?

Queensland gallopers have a strong recent record in the G2 Missile S. with Hard Empire (Hard Spun {USA}) and Phobetor (Dream Ahead {USA}) winning the last two editions. Gold Coast-based trainer Adam Campton will be hoping to make it a hat-trick when he saddles up his progressive 6-year-old Deepour (Exosphere) in the Missile.

“I’ve never been afraid to have a go at something,” Campton said.

Deepour | Image courtesy of Michael McInally

“Having a go at a Group 2 on the back-up, it’s a little bit in the back of my mind, but at this point in time I think Deepour will be able to do it and hopefully he can run a good race.

“He’s a very happy horse, he’s in a good frame of mind, he’s very healthy. He might just relish it.”

Ryan Maloney will partner Deepour on Saturday at Rosehill.

Warren plots Berkeley path

Mornington-based trainer Jason Warren is set to give his progressive galloper Gawnski (Impending) a similar spring preparation to that of Berkeley Square (Territories {Ire}).

After chasing home Mollynickers (Pierro) in the VOBIS Gold Ingot last start, Gawnski will contest the VRC Member Matthew Hodder Plate over 1410 metres on Saturday at Fleminhton.

“If you take a line through Berkeley Square’s form, that is what triggered us to look at this race closely,” Warren said.

“And we saw what he went on to do in the spring last year.”

Berkeley Square would win the Listed Exford Plate and the G2 Moonee Valley Vase, and ran fourth in the G2 Caulfield Guineas.

“Gawnski is hard fit and he’s going well at this early time of the spring, just as the better races are kicking off. I think he will progress over more distance later, but he’ll have this run and hopefully he can knock off a Saturday win before we give him a let-up.

“He’s a nice horse.”

Vale Warhorse

Warhorse (NZ), the Champion 2YO in New Zealand for the 2011/12 has passed away. The son of General Nediym sired 26 winners of 73 races from 69 runners, led by the six-time winner I Am War, who ran fourth in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial S.

Warhorse

A statement from the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Victoria social media said, “It is with heartfelt sadness tonight (Thursday) that with so many tears shed, we have had to make the difficult decision to bid our beautiful ‘War’ his final goodnight.”

Paddington exits Sussex in 'fine' condition with Juddmonte International a possibility

Fresh off a win in the G1 Sussex S. on Wednesday, Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) has emerged from that effort “absolutely fine” and the G1 Juddmonte International S. later this month is under consideration by his connections, according to trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The Coolmore partners-owned 'TDN Rising Star' was winning his fourth Group 1 race after taking the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace S., and the Eclipse S. in succession prior to his score during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

“Everything seems fine with him after the race, absolutely fine,” said O'Brien. “We're going to decide over the next week to 10 days where to go next, but York has to be a possibility.

“He just seems to be thriving for his racing.”

The colt is following a similar career path to fellow Ballydoyle luminary Giant’s Causeway (USA), who won the St James's Palace, Eclipse, Sussex and International before the Irish Champion S.

McKulick denies War Like Goddess in Glens Falls

The thoughtfully named McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) who has always been special to the Chad Brown team, added another feather to her cap with a late-flying victory in Thursday's G2 Glens Falls S. at Saratoga, denying War Like Goddess (USA) (English Channel{USA}) an historic three-peat in the process.

“Irad (Ortiz, Jr.) rode a masterful race,” said winning trainer Brown. “Early on when War Like Goddess had position ahead of us and was a little rank and such, he carefully stayed behind her. When she came off the rail down the backside before the final turn, Irad cleverly got off the rail as well and followed her and stayed away from the horse (Elegant Taste) that was stopping on the rail. All those moves, particularly that one down the backside really made the difference today.”

WinStar to Stand Two Phil's

Three-time graded winner and runner-up in the 2023 GI Kentucky Derby Two Phil's (USA) (Hard Spun {USA}) will stand the 2024 season at WinStar Farm near Lexington. His retirement was previously announced after the chestnut suffered an ankle injury during his win in the June 24 G3 Ohio Derby. A fee will be revealed later.

“We have been looking for a Danzig-line horse that meets our standard of physicality, pedigree, and race record for some time now,” said Elliott Walden, president, CEO, and racing manager of WinStar Farm. “I think Two Phil's could have been the best 3-year-old in the country if his career had not been cut short after his dominant win in the Ohio Derby with a 5 Ragozin, 105 Beyer, and a negative 3/4 on Thorograph. However you look at it, he is top class.”

“From the time he came into my barn at two, Two Phil's was a standout,” said trainer Larry Rivelli. “He is the best horse I have ever trained, and I look forward to his babies.”

Looking Ahead - August 5

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

With the new season's arrival, we will see plenty of exciting and progressive gallopers step out for the first time. TTR AusNZ has found three unraced thoroughbreds to watch on Saturday across Australia.

Flemington, Race 3, 12.55pm AEST, VRC Member Matthew Hodder Plate, $150,000. 1410m

City Thunder, 3-year-old gelding (Starspangledbanner x Our Secret Sister {Toorak Toff})

The newly minted partnership of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman will saddle up City Thunder for good supporters Rosemont Stud at Flemington on Saturday.

The gelding is the second foal from the unraced Toorak Toff mare Our Secret Sister. She is a three-quarter sister to Miss Toorak Flyer (Toorak Toff), the dam of Treasurway (Starspangledbanner), who is a victress of the G3 Breeders’ S.

Starspangledbanner | Standing at Coolmore

Our Secret Sister is a half-sister to Secret Flyer (Secret Savings {USA}) who won 11 races, including the Listed Kensington S. and the Listed Sir John Monash S.

Furthermore, this is the family of Luvaluva (NZ) (Mastercraftsman {NZ}) and Brandenburg (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}), who both scored at Group 2 level and placed in Group 1 races.

Kembla Grange, Race 2, 1pm AEST, Harrison Dabin 21st Mdn H., $42,000, 1000m

Rapido, 3-year-old colt (Capitalist x Madame Cactus {USA} {Cactus Ridge {USA}})

Randwick-based trainers Peter and Paul Snowden will debut a son of Capitalist, Rapido, at Kembla Grange on Saturday.

The colt is the fifth foal from the Cactus Ridge (USA) mare Madame Cactus (USA). She won three times, including the G2 Raven Run S. at Keeneland and the Listed My Trust Cat S. at Delta Downs.

Rapido hails from an international family. Among the black-type scorers is Dominican (USA) (El Corredor {USA}), he won the G1 Blue Grass S. at Keeneland and the Listed Rushaway S. at Turfway Park. Other performers include Sounds Of Earth (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}), who was placed in the G1 Japan Cup, the G1 Nakayama Arima Kinen and the G1 Kyoto Kikuka Sho.

The colt was a $700,000 yearling purchase by James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership from the draft of Twin Hills Stud at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Kembla Grange, Race 2, 1pm AEST, Harrison Dabin 21st Mdn H., $42,000, 1000m

Ocean Eyes, 3-year-old filly (Astern x Quenya {Sepoy})

Kembla Grange-based trainers Robert and Luke Price will debut a daughter of Astern, Ocean Eyes, at their home track on Saturday.

Ocean Eyes is the first foal from the Sepoy mare Quenya. She is a half-sister to the Group 3 winners Chetwood (Exceed And Excel) and Mearas.

Quenya is closely related to Anamato (Redoute’s Choice), a victress of the G1 Australasian Oaks and the dam of the Champion Godolphin-owned galloper Anamoe.

This extensive black-type family also includes the warhorse Grand Armee (Hennessy {USA}), the Champion Older Horse in Australia in 2005.

Ocean Eyes was a $55,000 yearling purchase by Turpentine Park Thoroughbreds from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Looking Back

Friday's selections had no joy. Rule Of Salex (NZ) (U S Navy Flag {USA}) was unplaced at Coffs Harbour, while By The Book (Written By) was also unplaced at Ballarat on the synthetic.
