Matings mix: Twin Hills Stud

Twin Hills Stud has an exciting addition to their stallion roster for 2023, and studmaster Olly Tait revealed that Daumier will be in receipt of a number of high-quality mares to get his first season underway.

Expecting to foal around 150 mares this season, a busy time lies ahead for Olly Tait and his team at Twin Hills Stud in Cootamundra. Soon coming to fruition are the mating plans started around March of 2022, and which never really stop “right up until the mare is actually covered.”

It’s now six years since Olly and Amber Tait took control of the farm, having purchased it from Godolphin, whose Australian arm was started by Olly years ago.

It’s four years since they first took a draft of yearlings to the Magic Millions Gold Coast in January, and all-up they have now sold 505 horses under the name of Twin Hills Stud, for just over $33 million - an impressive sum for a young commercial farm.

“Sadly that’s not all ours,” was Olly Tait’s good-humoured response.

It’s still early days in the timeframe of breeding, producing and trading horses, but the success has been there with numerous examples already. Latterly, they include the $500,000 garnered by a Written Tycoon filly out of Exceeds (Snitzel) at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Exceeds, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Rock Kingdom (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), was a $200,000 purchase herself by Tait at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, when carrying the fancied filly.

She has a Maurice (Jpn) colt to follow, and is in foal to Tagaloa again, though a late cover means she may not be served in 2023.

“I sent her to Tagaloa and I've got another mare going to Tagaloa this year,” Tait explained.

“I wanted to support Tagaloa himself, because he's a very good racehorse, but also wanted to support Yulong. The investment that Mr Zhang has put into the industry in Australia is extraordinary. So, in my own little way, I wanted to support that operation.”

That’s despite Twin Hills itself standing five stallions in 2023, with new boy Daumier very much the centre of attention.

Getting him off to a good start

Sales appeal aside, a late foal from Exceeds might not bother Tait as it certainly didn’t hold back Daumier. The only Group 1-winning 2-year-old colt of his foal crop, Daumier was a November 26 foal. It’s a fact that Twin Hills is proudly promoting.

“You don't get many opportunities as a stud farm to stand a Blue Diamond winner,” Tait said. “We see it as a great opportunity for Twin Hills… and we've got some good shareholders in him.

“He's a lovely looking horse. We took him down to Melbourne for the Great Southern Sale and showed him off there.

“Then we've had a number of people through the farm and we're going to have a lot more people through the farm in the next few weeks.”

The son of Epaulette stands for $16,500 (inc GST) in his debut season at Twin Hills, and will be in receipt of significant in-house support according to Tait.

“I've got a good knowledge of our own mares, of what they've produced, what their own physical attributes are and, if they've had foals already, what the physical attributes of those foals are, and where they fit commercially,” he said.

“Naturally when you stand your own stallions as well, you're trying to assist those stallions and trying to get them off the ground at the same time.”

“Naturally when you stand your own stallions as well, you're trying to assist those stallions and trying to get them off the ground at the same time.” - Olly Tait

Giving Daumier every chance will include sending him Demetria (Conatus), a three-time winner and half-sister to Champion Female Sprinter in Australia in 2013/14, Samaready (More Than Ready {USA}), the dam of G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Shinzo (Snitzel).

“Demetria's sister is a Blue Diamond winner, and she's going to a Blue Diamond winner, so there's a bit of symmetry there,” Tait added.

In the past couple of years, the support of such a mare has been directed at Peltzer, to whom Demetria carries this year, with a “beautiful” yearling colt on the ground. Whilst Tait is by no means ignoring the rest of his roster, he’s plain that it’s time to get behind Daumier.

Another that will be sent his way is Moonlight Music (Redoute’s Choice), whose first foal was the stakes-winning juvenile Moonlight Hussler (Hussonet {USA}). She has a strong back pedigree too, being out of US juvenile winner Heavenly Night (USA) (Woodman {USA}), from the family of Holy Roman Emperor (Ire). Not served in 2022, her latest foal is a Peltzer yearling colt.

“She's an older mare, and Redoute’s Choice mares are getting rarer and rarer, naturally… and he was Champion Broodmare Sire again this year,” Tait said.

“She's been a very good-producing mare. And again, I think she's the sort of mare that could get Daumier off to a good start, and that's the most important thing for us.”

“She's (Moonlight Music) been a very good-producing mare. And again, I think she's the sort of mare that could get Daumier off to a good start, and that's the most important thing for us.” - Olly Tait

Another smart-looking recent mare purchase for Tait, Redeeming Spirit (I Am Invincible) cost $120,000 via the Inglis Digital April (Late) Online Sale this year. A winner and a half-sister to Group 3 winner Sweet Redemption (Snitzel), she was bought in foal to Wild Ruler (her maiden mating), and will also visit Daumier.

“Interestingly, she's descended from Dark Jewel, which was a mare that my grandparents owned many years ago,” Tait added.

“She's a phenomenal broodmare who produced a Golden Slipper winner, a Thousand Guineas winner and an Epsom Handicap winner.”

Love for Peltzer

Peltzer’s second crop of foals are due this spring, and he is by no means forgotten about by Tait. Standing at the top of the Twin Hills roster alongside Daumier at $16,500 (inc GST), Peltzer covered over 80 mares in his first two years, which Tait has previously described as “solid books.”

“You've never heard of a horse stud who stands a stallion, that hasn't said that they like the first foals by their stallion,” Tait laughed, as he described how Peltzer is stamping his stock.

Peltzer | Standing at Twin Hills Stud

“They've got plenty of size,” he added. “Peltzer himself is a bit more refined than your average So You Think, and So You Think himself is such a phenomenal stallion that really stamps them.

“They're largely very correct, with good bone. He had a foal make $100,000 this year and another one went for $60,000. For a horse off a $15,000 service fee, that's good going.”

The $60,000 weanling, which sold to Lyndhurst Farm at this year’s Inglis Great Southern Sale, is out of Twin Hills’ Fastnet Rock mare Infinite Love. She’s from a speedy, stakes-winning American family, was covered by Peltzer in 2022, and will visit him again this year.

“There isn't a whole heap of science to that mating except for the fact that it worked the first time round, so let's give him another go with him,” Tait said.

Keeping it commercial

Tait might be putting a considerable portion of Twin Hills’ mare power behind the home roster, but some smart mares will still step outside the property in 2023.

“We're in the business of selling horses,” Tait summed up. “We feel that, if you're going to play in the commercial market, then there are certain stallions that you want to have exposure to.

“Naturally, you’re just trying to find the ones that are heading in the right direction. We'll send the majority of our own mares to our own stallions, but we do send some out.”

For the second year in a row under Tait’s guidance, juvenile stakes winner Let Me Sleep On It (Manhattan Rain) - a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mazu (Maurice {Jpn}) - will head up to the Hunter Valley, and towards Arrowfield Stud.

Let Me Sleep On It (pictured) will visit Maurice (Jpn) this season | Image courtesy of Inglis

She was sourced from the 2022 Inglis Chairman's Sale for $200,000 when in foal to Capitalist, now a yearling colt.

“We're only in the first few seasons of Maurice,” Tait noted. “What he’s achieved in a short period of time is impressive.

“It’s an obvious mating for her. She was a stakes-winning 2-year-old, and you’re producing a close relative of Mazu.”

“It’s (visiting Maurice) an obvious mating for her (Let Me Sleep On It). She was a stakes-winning 2-year-old, and you’re producing a close relative of Mazu.” - Olly Tait

Also visiting the Hunter, but this time heading to Newgate Stud, is Tiny (Lonhro). Another Twin Hills purchased from this year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, dual winner Tiny was bought from Godolphin carrying her maiden cover to Earthlight (Ire).

Tait paid $280,000 for the mare, and had the mating to Russian Revolution in mind from the outset.

“Despite her name, she’s a very big mare so I thought that, physically, he would suit her,” he said.

“He looks like he's consistently getting good 2-year-olds. He's obviously had a Group 1-winning 3-year-old this year. So, again, he’s a horse that I feel is heading in the right direction.”

Tiny (pictured) will visit Russian Revolution this season | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

Just down the road from Newgate, Too Darn Hot (GB) stands at Darley Kelvinside, and will receive Nevershotthedeputy (Written Tycoon).

From the family of Time For War, Nevershotthedeputy was bought in partnership with Watership Down for $200,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, with Tait happy to join in the venture with the British stud who co-own Too Darn Hot.

The family jewels

Aside from the commercial proceedings at Twin Hills, Tait oversees a handful of family owned homebreds. These include Tortoni (Strategic), who is out of Group 1 winner Whisked (Whiskey Road {USA}), and from the great Corumbene family of Ichihara (General Nediym) and Isurava (General Nediym).

“She's an interesting mare in that she was the last foal of Whisked, who was Australian Broodmare of the Year and dam of Tie The Knot,” Tait explained.

“She's (Tortoni) an interesting mare in that she was the last foal of Whisked, who was Australian Broodmare of the Year and dam of Tie The Knot.” - Olly Tait

“Before we owned Twin Hills, she was served by Strategic at Twin Hills when it was owned by Darley. She then came back the next year to have the Strategic foal, and she sadly died having that foal, who is Tortoni.

“Not the most glamorous-looking mare,” a severe sway back didn’t stop Tortoni winning a race before she retired to breeding duties, at which she’s been very successful.

“After Amber and I bought Twin Hills, Cherry Tortoni was in the first crop of foals that were bred here.

“He obviously went on to win a Group 2 and was Group 1 placed, a fabulous horse. So, I guess she's a meaningful mare for us.”

Tortoni is “still knocking around,” at Twin Hills, whilst her fifth foal, Jenny Jerome (Churchill {Ire}), was stakes placed last spring and not too far away in the G1 Thousand Guineas.

Owned by Tait’s father and aunt, Tortoni will head back to Churchill (Ire) this year and is carrying to St Mark’s Basilica (Fr).

Also, amongst the family mares, being owned by Tait’s parents, G1 VRC Oaks runner-up Douceur (No Nay Never {USA}) will be paired with So You Think (NZ) for her maiden mating, and may become another fruitful mare for Tait and Co., being from the family of Group 2 winner Shania Dane (Danehill {USA}) and, further back, Group 1 scorer Summer Passage (Snitzel).

'I'm just doing what I love': gripping week for Boman

11 min read
Stuart Boman of Blandford Bloodstock caught up with TTR AusNZ to discuss his approach to sourcing star gallopers after a week of exciting results internationally for Australian clients.

Stuart Boman was an inaugural graduate of the prestigious Godolphin Flying Start program in 2005. In 2010, Boman joined the Newmarket, United Kingdom-based Blandford Bloodstock and has specialised in sourcing Northern Hemisphere thoroughbreds for a vast range of Australian clients.

Boman has found immense success in this field, often with inexpensive horses ranging from yearling purchases to the tried-horse markets in the Northern Hemisphere.

Last week, two Boman graduates found the winner’s circle, the hugely talented Floating Artist (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and the progressive Warnie (Ire) (Highland Reel {Ire}).

The 7-year-old Floating Artist, trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, reminded everybody of his ability on Saturday at Moonee Valley, Australia, when second-up he surged to victory over 2040 metres, carrying the colours of Seymour Bloodstock.

It was an emotional victory for those connected to the son of Nathaniel (Ire), as he had been on the sidelines for an extended period after a paddock accident.

Floating Artist had shown a high level of ability in his first Australian preparation when he ran a courageous fourth in the G1 Melbourne Cup behind the star gallopers Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) and Incentivise (Shamus Award); he could find himself in the famous race again in 2023 when connections outlined it would be a dream to try again.

“He was off the track for a very long time, and they (the owners) have done a really fantastic job to be patient and give full credit to the horse; he's incredibly tough. It's just great to win another race with him,” Eustace said.

“Whether he sort of stays at that trip or we go up in grade, I think he'll be running in Cups - which ones they are, we'll see. We'll look after him, make sure he's not racing on ground that is too firm; what races they are, he'll tell us as we gradually go up in trip and grade.”

“... full credit to the horse (Floating Artist); he's incredibly tough. I think he'll be running in Cups; which ones they are, we'll see.” - Stuart Boman

Value buys

Boman sourced Floating Artist at the 2020 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, paying 95,000gns (AU$195,200) with Ciaron Maher Racing.

Earlier in the week, the Boman-sourced and Joseph O’Brien-trained Warnie stamped himself as a horse to follow when he was successful in the Listed Churchill S. at Tipperary, Ireland.

Warnie carries the colours of the Australian-based Bennett Racing, which is becoming more active in the international market.

Boman, alongside Bennett Racing, secured the son of Highland Reel (Ire) from the 2023 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale for 65,000gns (AU$133,500).

Boman shared with TTR AusNZ his approach to sourcing thoroughbreds and his latest stars.

“There are no real hard and fast rules; I suppose I’m always just trying to find good value for my clients,” he said.

“There are no real hard and fast rules (to sourcing thoroughbreds); I suppose I’m always just trying to find good value for my clients.” - Stuart Boman

“We bought Warnie from the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale. I have been trying to convince clients in Australia that the European breeze-up sales is a good opportunity and probably the last frontier, they need to delve into, and they’re starting to.

“Annabel Neasham has bought a few from the breeze-up sale this year, and Nathan (Bennett) backed me on the idea, he had a couple of horses running at the Royal Ascot meeting this year, and I said, ‘Well, let’s add to the team’, and we were knocked out on earlier prospects which profiled as speedier five to six furlong 2-year-olds,” Boman told TTR AusNZ.

“We switched targets and started looking for horses that could get a mile. As there’s an interesting race at Royal Ascot called the Chesham S., which is restricted to progeny of either sire or dam that has won over 10 furlongs or further.

“So, it’s trying to promote the breeding of stayers, and so we switched to targeting Chesham-qualified pedigrees, and we went through pages, the times, stride data and the conformation, and we came up with Warnie.”

Warnie (Ire) | Image courtesy of Tattersalls

As Warnie is an Australian-owned horse, we may see Warnie competing on our shores one day. However, Boman indicated the plans for Warnie remain open, with several options and paths.

“Look, he will probably end up in Australia at some point, with the prizemoney being as it is. There has been interest from Hong Kong for Warnie, but I don’t think Bennett Racing will sell the horse; I think he will remain with Joseph (O’Brien),” Boman told TTR AusNZ.

“It’s a very good crop of 2-year-olds in Europe this year, and we’re not getting carried away with where we stand in the pecking order, but he’s obviously a very progressive horse.

“We have a few things in mind for him internationally and in Europe this year; we hope and dream that he progresses to a Guineas horse next year and then bring him down to Australia, with races like the Golden Eagle as options.

“... we hope and dream that he (Warnie) progresses to a Guineas horse next year and then bring him down to Australia, with races like the Golden Eagle as options.” - Stuart Boman

“It’s just a matter of how he progresses from now.”

Other star graduates

Warnie and Flying Artist are not the only stars Boman has sourced for the Australians.

The Neasham stable has benefitted from Boman’s expert eye hugely, with the acquisition of My Oberon (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), a Group 2 winner who was a private purchase.

The recently retired Top Ranked (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who claimed a thrilling edition of the G1 Epsom H. was also a private purchase.

Last but not least! The incredible Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}), who will return to action on Saturday in the G1 Winx S.

Boman sourced Zaaki from the 2020 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale with Annabel Neasham Racing for 150,000gns (AU$308,000). The 9-year-old has won over $10 million in prizemoney for his connections.

“It’s a matter of identifying value and the opportunities that come along. In a variety of ways, but I do feel generally, at public auction, you do get the best value for your clients; I do source horses privately, but Floating Artist, Warnie and Zaaki were purchased from Tattersalls at auction,” Boman explained to TTR AusNZ.

“Private horses make up a large percentage of horses that I send to Australia with good success. Generally speaking, those private purchases are horses with a specific target, like buying a Melbourne Cup horse or a Golden Eagle horse or meeting a specific deadline, with a shipment going to Australia.”

“It’s a matter of identifying value and the opportunities that come along. In a variety of ways, but I do feel generally, at public auction, you do get the best value for your clients...” - Stuart Boman

Countless hours

Boman has made finding these ‘diamonds in the rough’ almost look easy. However, Boman and his team spend countless hours compiling data and assessing race performances and pedigree.

“I suppose that’s a point of difference for me is I probably do more research and more due diligence than others may, and it is watching a lot of races and putting systems in place to help streamline or, at least better organise the information that needs to be assessed,” Boman said.

“I suppose that’s a point of difference for me is I probably do more research and more due diligence than others may, and it is watching a lot of races and putting systems in place to help streamline or, at least better organise the information that needs to be assessed.” - Stuart Boman

“So we’ve developed a database, with the help of some third-party contractors and taking on some extra people to help get through everything.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s not a real job. I’m doing what I love, so it's quite easy and enjoyable.”

Boman explained how he approaches buying from different sales, whether they are breeze-up sales or tried-horse sales, the areas he zones in on.

“I think pedigree is foremost, in every assessment I make. In saying that, I’m probably most flexible regarding the stallion. I find the mare is probably the most important aspect or dynamic in determining whether a horse will be a good horse or not,” Boman explained.

“I think pedigree is foremost, in every assessment I make. I find the mare is probably the most important aspect or dynamic in determining whether a horse will be a good horse or not.” - Stuart Boman

“The stallion generally affects how much you will pay for them. I’ve always been willing to compromise on the sire, and in Warnie’s case, Highland Reel was a horse that I always admired as a racehorse.

“Highland Reel as a son of Galileo, but a bit of an Australian pedigree being out of an Australian-bred mare (Hveger), he was the most extraordinary racehorse, and we are very quick to condemn these horses if they don’t perform with their first 2-year-old crop.

“Ottoman Emperor was another, by Excelebration, who wasn’t extremely fashionable as a sire, and we purchased him two years ago for OTI, and he turned out a decent horse.

Highland Reel (Ire) | Standing at S T Farm

“There are plenty of other examples. I bought a Decorated Knight, these are fashionable stallions, but the pedigree of the female side stacks up and excels, and I do focus a lot on pedigree. But we’ll be flexible when it comes to sires and buy sires that may not be perceived as being fashionable.”

Boman explained his approach to tried sales is slightly different; although the emphasis is still put on the pedigree of the subject, it isn’t the most critical factor.

“When you’re buying from a tried sale or private purchase, you’re buying the proven article, Floating Artist and Zaaki; they had the runs on the board,” he said.

“So, what influences your decision-making shifts a bit. I’d focus more on their race record and then analyse their stride and times over the pedigree.

“I still have pedigree in the mix, but the horse is fairly exposed, and I use pedigree analysis more at the breeze-up sales as you’ve got less information at your hands to assess their level of ability,” Boman explained to TTR AusNZ.

“It’s a bit of a matrix, and you just tweak it according to how much information you’ve got about that horse’s level of ability.”

“It’s (sourcing thoroughbreds) a bit of a matrix, and you just tweak it according to how much information you’ve got about that horse’s level of ability.” - Stuart Boman

Prizemoney driving appetite

With Australian prizemoney at an all-time high and numerous million-dollar pop-up races appearing around the country, demand for international gallopers is at an all-time high.

With 14 years of experience in this role, Boman marked the mass change that has happened in just the last five years since the rise of prizemoney levels and the new pop-up races.

“These pop-up races like Five Diamonds, the Golden Eagle and so on, are driving business,” Boman told TTR AusNZ.

“They are driving massive amounts of business.

“People five years ago wouldn’t have even really thought too much about it. But now people call to see if a horse is suitable for the Cox Plate or a Golden Eagle, trying almost to position the horse to sell, with races in mind in Australia.”

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, Boman outlined some gallopers he sourced that look to have promising careers.

Among them is Fawkner Park (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), trained by Neasham and racing in the Bennett Racing silks. The now 5-year-old won his first four starts in Australia before losing nothing in defeat when running second at Randwick last start.

Fawkner Park (Ire) | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

Another galloper is Jimi Hendrix (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who Neasham will also train.

“Fawkner Park is leading the team among the newer ones. He’s obviously a horse that has run several times in Australia already,” Boman shared.

“We have another horse called Jimi Hendrix; he’s coming down for The Five Diamonds, in particular. He will be staying in Australia.

“Fawkner Park is leading the team among the newer ones. We have another horse called Jimi Hendrix; he’s coming down for The Five Diamonds, in particular. He will be staying in Australia.” - Stuart Boman

“He’s shown to be a talented horse; he ran a good race at Royal Ascot. We are working on a couple of others; buying privately has been competitive, and we’ve lost a few on vettings, this year which has been unfortunate.”

On an endnote, Boman added, “I’ve been with Blandford for 14 years, and we have a great team that I’ve worked with, and I’ve learned a huge amount from them. I think they really set the standard in professionalism and the outcomes we achieve with them.”

Analyse This: August sire focus on Lonhro

4 min read
In this series, TTR AusNZ shines the analytical spotlight on an in-form sire, trainer, vendor or breeder who is enjoying a particularly good run and Lonhro is TTR AusNZ's sire of the month.

Cover image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

While his days in the covering shed are no longer, the echoes of Lonhro’s name will be heard for many seasons to come in Australian racing circles.

Lonhro’s daughters produced 16 stakes winners last season which is his best season to date as a broodmare sire.

Daughters of Lonhro produced the winners of 26 stakes events last season which is the most of any of the top 10 sires on the Australian Broodmare Sires' Premiership.

Of the leading broodmare sires in Australia, Lonhro maintains the best stakes winners to runners strike rate.

Darley’s Brazen Beau and Arrowfield’s Snitzel are the strongest nicking stallions with daughters of Lonhro.

An Australian Champion Racehorse title, Champion Sire and now one of the country’s leading broodmare sires, there is little wonder as to why Lonhro is widely referred to as the ‘people’s horse’. The sire of over 1000 individual winners, close to 100 stakes winners and numerous titles to his name, Lonhro has been a horse of a lifetime for Darley’s Australian operation. Last season the 25-year-old produced a host of stakes performers including G1 Rosehill Guineas winner Lindermann, but it was his performance as a broodmare sire that really had people talking. In the 2022/23 racing period, Lonhro’s daughters produced 23 stakes winners across six countries including Godolphin’s own G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile (Astern).

Table: The 2022/23 Australian Champion Broodmare Sire table

With seasons earnings exceeding $22 million, Lonhro has enjoyed his best period to date having finished sixth on last season’s Australian Leading Broodmare Sire tables. Entering stud in 2004, he is one of the youngest sires of the top 10 stallions represented which bodes well for the 11-time Group 1 winner’s future as a maternal sire. Not only was it the former champion sire’s best season to date by earnings, but he was also the most represented sire by stakes winners with his daughters producing the winners of a combined 26 stakes races for the period. The next closest was the highly regarded broodmare sire Encosta De Lago whose daughters produced the winners of 24 stakes events for the period.

While his runners naturally increase with time, Lonhro’s daughters are maintaining an exceptional stakes winners to runners strike rate of close to six per cent which is the best of his peers. In a testament to his versatility, of the stakes winners produced from daughters of Lonhro last season, four were juveniles while 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds accounted for five and eight of his stakes winners respectively. While over 50 per cent of his maternal stakes winners last season were bred by Darley and raced in the Godolphin blue, three were sold at public auction for an average purchase price of $100,000 and a further three black-type winners were homebreds.

With breeders on the hunt for Danehill (USA)-free blood, daughters of Lonhro have become a sought-after commodity in the bloodstock marketplace. There are no surprises when it comes to Lonhro’s maternal sire nicks with seven of the top 10 stallions by stakes winners to runners being Darley-based sires. While his former barn-mates account for a significant proportion of the sample, there is certainly plenty of diversity in the sirelines represented.

Descendants of Invincible Spirit (Ire), including reigning Champion Sire I Am Invincible and his son Brazen Beau, have a strong affinity with Lonhro with the nicks accounting for 15 per cent and 27 per cent stakes winners to runners respectively. Danehill is represented by four of the top 10 nicks with Snitzel, Fastnet Rock, Exceed And Excel and Helmet all represented by multiple stakes winners from Lonhro mares. Descendants of Machiavellian (USA) being Astern, Medaglia D’Oro (USA) and Street Cry (Ire) account for nine of Lonhro’s maternal stakes winners and further testify his genetic affinity with an array of bloodlines. Shuttling to Darley’s Lexington-based Jonabell Farm from 2012 to 2014, Lonhro’s daughters are represented by over 60 runners in the United States with over six per cent of those being stakes winners.

Lonhro

With over $107 million in earnings and nearing 70 maternal sired stakes winners worldwide, Lonhro has certainly confirmed his status of one of Australia’s leading broodmare sires of the modern era. While the stud career might be over for the well-regarded ‘people's horse’, Lonhro’s legacy will continue to live on through his sons and an ever-expanding group of promising broodmares. It appears only a matter of time before the former Australian Champion Racehorse and Champion Australian Sire adds yet another accolade to his mantel in the form of Champion Australian Broodmare Sire.

Inspiral bounces back to best

Frankel (GB) mare Inspiral (GB) put her disappointing run in the G1 Sussex S. behind her, returning to form to land the G1 Jacques Le Marois at Deauville for the second year in succession.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained 4-year-old won by 1.25l, with race favourite Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) second and the Cox Plate-bound Light Infantry (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) third.

Fittingly, it was the final ride at the France track for the great Frankie Dettori.

“She's a fantastic filly and this is my last race at Deauville, so to finish with a win like this is incredible,” the Italian jockey said.

“She's (Inspiral) a fantastic filly and this is my last race at Deauville, so to finish with a win like this is incredible.” - Frankie Dettori

“I was very easy on her at Goodwood, as this was always the target and she showed what a true champion she is.

“I’ve won every race here and 19 Group 1s, so I have great memories, some wonderful days and wonderful nights!”

Gosden Sr added: “Inspiral can be brilliant on her day and was pretty fresh. She’s only run twice this year and came here in top order.”

Inspiral could be aimed towards the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita in November.

“Maybe we will take her to Santa Anita, even though it is a tight track for her,” Gosden Sr said.

Bred and raced by Cheveley Park Stud, Inspiral is from the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Starscope (GB) (Selkirk {USA}) and she herself is a half-sister to the Listed Rosemary S. winner Solar Magic (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Starscope has also thrown the stakes performer Celestran (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

Wootton Bassett juvenile lands Group 3

The Patrice Cottier-trained Grey Man (Fr) became Wootton Bassett’s (GB) 36th stakes winner and 26th Group scorer when he was much the best in the G3 Prix Francois Boutin S. at Deauville.

The 6/5 favourite prevailed by 1l from the Starspangledbanner colt Mythology (Ire), while Kumite (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) placed third.

“We were convinced beforehand that the horse had a great chance,” said owner Jean-Philippe Dubois. “He had improved again from his last run and today (Sunday) it looked like he had the race won two (furlongs) out.

“For sure, he is a very good one.

“We shall see how he comes out of the race and then we’ll decide what will be next. Right now I don’t know, but there are plenty of opportunities.”

The 2-year-old colt is the eighth of nine foals and one of four winners produced by the G3 Prix d’Aumale and G3 Prix de Psyche victrix Top Toss (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}), herself out of Listed Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Tossup (USA) (Gone West {USA}).

Wootton Bassett will shuttle to Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $93,500 (inc GST).

Listed winner for Justify at the Curragh

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Unless (USA) (Justify {USA}) became her sire’s 16th stakes winner when she took out the Listed John Kennedy Memorial S. at the Curragh.

The 3-year-old claimed victory by 1.75l in the hands of Gary Carroll, with race favourite Azazat (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) second and Alanya (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) third.

“Unless always looked like she would appreciate stepping up to that trip (2000 metres) and she could even get further. The (G1) Yorkshire Oaks (on August 24) is a possibility,” O’Brien said.

Bred by Orpendale and Wynatt and Chelston, Unless is from the 2017 G1 Cheveley Park Stud victress Clemmie (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) - the Champion 2YO Filly in Europe in 2017 and the Champion 2YO Filly in Ireland and GB in 2017. Clemmie is a sister to the elite-level winner and Group 1-producing sire Churchill (Ire), who will be available to breeders at Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Australia’s reigning Champion First Season Sire, Justify (USA) will also stand at Coolmore Australia, with his fee set at $77,000 (inc GST).

Simca Mille too good for Grosser Preis von Berlin rivals

Four-year-old Simca Mille (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) - a three-time Group 2 scorer back home in France - made the breakthrough in his fourth attempt at the elite level with a decisive win – and a landmark for trainer Stephane Wattel – in an international renewal of Sunday’s G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten.

“It is fantastic for the horse and, I have to admit, it’s very nice for me because it’s my first Group 1 after more than 30 years of training,” an emotional Wattel said.

“Simca Mille is engaged in the (G1 Prix de l') Arc de Triomphe and some good winners of this race have run very well in that race. That should be the next target and it's a very big one.”

Rider Alexis Pouchin cuddled Simca Mille to the line, with the pair owning a 0.75l margin on the line

Simca Mille, who becomes the fourth Group 1 winner for his sire, is from the three-time scorer Swertia (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). His grandam, Sanjida (Ire) (Polish Precedent {USA}), was a winner at two and was placed in the G3 Prix de Conde, G3 Prix Penelope and G3 Prix Cleopatre. Sanjida is kin to three black-type winners, headed by multiple Group 1-winning European champion Sarafina (Fr) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}), herself the dam of Group 3-winning siblings Savarin (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Geniale (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Another stakes win for Exceed And Excel

Andreas Wohler’s Danelo (Ire) (Exceed And Excel) proved far too strong in Sunday’s G3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Sprint at Hoppegarten.

Handled by Eduardo Pedroza, Danelo won by 1.5l for owner-breeder Gestut Ittlingen.

The 5-year-old is from the Group 3 scorer Daksha (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}), making him a half-brother to the Listed winner Vachement (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

United States of America

Speightstown colt dominates Del Mar Group 3

Second choice Prince Of Monaco (USA) (Speightstown {USA}) got the better of his more fancied Bob Baffert-trained stablemate, odds-on favourite Muth (USA) (Good Magic {USA}), to take Sunday's G3 Best Pal S. at Del Mar by 4.25l.

The winner was ridden by Flavien Prat.

Prat said: “He was very comfortable out there; felt good all the way. I saw the pace was hot and I just waited my turn.

“He’s a nice colt. And yes, I think he can run farther.”

Prince Of Monaco becomes the 138th black-type winner and 65th Graded winner for his sire. Out of the unraced Medaglia D’Oro (USA) mare Rainier (USA) - a half-sister to the stakes winners Greeley’s Rocket (USA) (Mr Greeley {USA}) and Laurie’s Rocket (USA). Prince of Monaco’s second dam is the stakes performer Clay's Rocket (USA) (American Chance {USA}) - a half-sister to G1 Frizette S. heroine Adieu (USA) (El Corredor {USA}).

Asia

Rulership entire claims G3 Kokura Kinen

Yuga Kawada guided Echt (Jpn) (Rulership (Jpn) to a comfortable victory in Sunday’s G3 Kokura H, handing the 6-year-old his second Graded success, following his triumph in last year’s G3 Tanabata Sho.

Trained by the great Hideyuki Mori, Echt is from the winning Deep Impact (Jpn) mare Hela (Jpn).

Duramente mare on top in G3 Sekiya Kinen

Avverare (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) had to check off heels in the straight, but when the 5-year-old saw clear air, she burst through the pack to score an impressive win in Sunday’s G3 Sekiya Kinen at Niigata.

Avverare was ridden by Keita Tosaki for trainer Tetsuya Kimura.

She is out of the winning Harlan’s Holiday (USA) mare Albiano (USA) - a three-quarter sister to the multiple Grade 1 victress Covfefe (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}).

Brunton’s future up in the air

Tasmania’s leading trainer Scott Brunton, who has the island’s best horse The Inevitable (Dundeel {NZ}), faces an uncertain future after his business was placed into liquidation due to a huge debt owing to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

The Federal Court last week issued Brunton Racing with a winding up order after the ATO rejected the business’ plan to pay more than $1 million via a payment plan. According to the ABC, the stable was hoping to pay back $4000 per week over the next five years.

Australian Trainers’ Association (ATA) boss Andrew Nicholl told RSN Racing & Sport “each individual case has to be looked at on its merits” when it comes to trainers going into liquidation.

“There’s about three or four moving parts to any circumstance where a trainer might go into liquidation,” Nicholl told RSN Racing & Sport.

“The fundamental of every trainer’s licence is that he must be solvent, he must be able to pay bills, he must have financial resources so he can trade and continue to pay staff, etc., etc.”

“One thing to be clear about is that the license to train is issued to the individual, it’s not issued to a corporation or a company, it’s issued to the individual.”

It is believed Brunton advised his clients that he was planning to adjust the stable's structure to race under the name Keys/Brunton, with his partner Tegan Keys to become the trainer while he became stable foreman.

Brunton has won the past nine Tasmanian Trainers' Premierships.

Liquidators from Deloitte have been appointed to oversee the process.

Tasmania's Office of Racing Integrity are investigating the situation in order to determine whether Brunton can continue training.

Zaaki to resume in Winx

Four-time Group 1 winner Zaaki (GB) (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}) will kick off his spring campaign in Saturday’s G1 Winx S. at Randwick, with champion jockey Jamie Kah heading to Sydney to take the ride.

“He’s come back as well as ever,” trainer Annabel Neasham said on RSN Racing & Sport.

“I don’t know if I want to dare say it but I don’t think I’ve had him going any better, ever.

Zaaki (GB) | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

“He’s flying and his trial was really good on Friday.

“After it, Jamie (Kah) felt that he was ready to go.”

The 9-year-old boasts four wins and four minor placings from 10 fresh-up runs.

A host of other Group 1 winners have been nominated for the 1400-metre event including Fangirl (Sebring), Communist (Russian Revolution), Lindermann (Lonhro), King Colorado (Kingman {GB}) and Mo’unga (NZ) (Savabeel).

Raheen Stud adds Group 1 winner to roster

Last year’s G1 Epsom H. hero Top Ranked (Ire) will stand at Raheen Stud in Queensland this spring at a fee of $7700 (inc GST and free return).

The imported son of Dark Angel (Ire), who was trained in Australia by Annabel Neasham, won the G2 Bill Ritchie H., before dead-heating with Ellsberg in the Epsom.

Top Ranked (Ire) | Standing at Raheen Stud, image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“It probably sounds like a strange thing to say, particularly given he won an Epsom and a Bill Ritchie at his last two starts, but I reckon we didn’t get to see the best of Top Ranked here in Australia,” Raheen Stud’s Basil Nolan said.

Top Ranked joins Heroic Valour at Raheen Stud. The latter stands at the same fee as his barnmate.

Shesallshenanigans to tackle Quezette

The Simon Zahra-trained Shesallshenanigans (Toronado {Ire}) will tackle the G3 Quezette S. on Saturday.

The daughter of Toronado (Ire) won The Showdown last preparation.

“She’s stakes-placed when she ran third in a Listed race in Adelaide and the form out of that race is good because the winner came out and won at Flemington.

“She’s probably improved as a racehorse. She hasn’t grown much but she’s come on mentally. We gave her jump-out last Friday and she probably had a bigger blow than I thought she would so we’re probably going in there a little bit underdone.”

Giga Kick ready to rumble

The reigning The Everest winner Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) is set to jump-out on Monday, August 21, at Cranbourne in preparation for his anticipated first start in the G2 McEwen S. on September 9 at Moonee Valley.

“The development has been phenomenal,” trainer Clayton Douglas said.

“He’s now turned a 4-year-old and he’s a lot bigger and strong and, putting it into perspective, he’s a lot heavier, so you would think he would only be better as a 4-year-old.

“Giga Kick will have a trial next Monday, it will be a cruisy trial, just a day away for him.”

Graysong puts it together

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Graysong (I Am Invincible) put it all together to break his maiden at start five on Monday at Pakenham on the synthetic.

The 4-year-old gelding was ridden by Thomas Stockdale and won by 2l from Holy Racket (NZ) (Swiss Ace) and Segament (Overshare) further away in third.

Graysong is the ninth foal from the Singspiel (Ire) mare Rewaaya (NZ). She won the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. and the G3 Let’s Elope S.

Graysong was a $160,000 purchase by Mick Price Racing from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud at the 2021 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Krakarib ready for return

The Simon Zahra-trained Krakarib (Ribchester {Ire}) is set to return in Saturday’s G3 Vain S. at Caulfield.

The syndicator and co-owner Alex Vinar of Donald’s Racing said, “Simon is very pleased with him. We’ve gave him every opportunity to show he warrants a shot at the Vain S. because we didn’t want to go there and just be making up the numbers.

“He definitely warrants a spot in the race after Friday’s trial at Flemington. We were lucky enough to book Mark Zahra, and he’s pretty happy to be on the horse after getting a proper feel for him on Friday.”

Vale Lorraine Anderton

On Monday, it was shared that Lorraine Anderton had passed away on Saturday morning, Anderton had suffered from poor health over the last 18 months.

Anderton had been the wife of the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame trainer Brian Anderton and had held a significant role at White Robe Lodge, despite her failing health.

“Mum always liked to have a handle on things, especially around the administrative side of the business,” said daughter Karen Stewart who, with her husband Wayne, manages breeding operations at the stud.

“Even on Friday she was at the office checking everything was in order. No way she was dropping the reins.”

Lorraine Anderton | Image courtesy of Trish Dunell

Brian and Lorraine Anderton met “on the dancefloor” and were to marry in 1960, becoming the parents of five children – Karen, Lynne, Cathryn, Shane and Nicola.

“I’ve got them all here with me now and to have all our children as well as the grandchildren around at this time is so important,” said Brian.

“It’s a wonderful tribute to someone who has been my best friend for more than 60 years and who has meant so much to so many.”

A Requiem Mass celebrating Lorraine Anderton’s life will take place at 11am NZST on Wednesday, August 16 at the St Mary's Church, 87 Church Street, Mosgiel, New Zealand.

Polly Grey to be served by Proisir

The 9-year-old mare Polly Grey (NZ) (Azamour {NZ}) will return to New Zealand to chase more stakes success and that elusive Group 1 before she retires to the broodmare paddock to be served by the Rich Hill Stud-based Proisir.

Polly Grey’s former trainer and co-owner Kyle Fawcett sent the mare to Chris Waller, who guided her to five stakes victories.

“At the time, around COVID, with our industry shutting down, it was just a no-brainer to send her to Australia and it has paid,” Fawcett said.

“She has won five races over there and they have all been black-type races.”

Polly Grey (NZ) | Image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

Polly Grey has subsequently returned to Sydney, and while she is pleasing Waller ahead of the spring, Sydney’s unseasonably warm weather has been far from ideal for her build-up.

“He (Waller) is very happy with her. He is almost the happiest he has ever been in terms of how she is training and her general wellbeing. He is just waiting for some rain to line her up,” Fawcett said.

“She is nominated to race at Hawkesbury on Thursday, but we have scratched the last four times because they are having a winter-summer over there and the tracks have been a Good 4 every time she has been due to race.

“She is all dressed up with nowhere to go, unfortunately.

“I can guarantee we will bring her back to New Zealand and dry the country out.

“She is coming back because she is going to Proisir. If we get conditions to suit, she will race on for a bit. If it doesn’t, she will be retired.”

Proisir | Standing at Rich Hill Stud

Fawcett said they were weighing up their options with stallions on both sides of the Tasman and settled on Rich Hill Stud stallion Proisir as their ideal first mating for their Group 1 performer.

“When we were comparing stallions in Australia at similar money, he was still coming up as the best value,” she said.

Lofty to target Champions Sprint

The Julius Sandhu-trained Lofty Strike (Snitzel) will target the G1 Champions Sprint at Flemington. However, Sandhu has yet to pinpoint a starting point for the well-bred 4-year-old entire, indicating that he will likely be seen at the races towards the end of the spring.

“Lofty Strike has come back in work, and we’ll let him tick along. I haven’t really picked a kick-off race because I don’t want to be dictated by the race, I’ll let Lofty Strike tell me where he is,” Sandhu said.

“Whatever we start with, we’ll probably end up in the Champions Sprint. We tackled it last year; we’ll have another crack at the stumps and see how we go.”

Laced Up Heels pleases Kent Jnr

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Laced Up Heels (Toronado {Ire}) trialled at Cranbourne on Monday morning, the stakes-winning Western Australian mare pleased her new trainers with her performance with co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr saying, “Laced Up Heels can go through the mares' races here in Melbourne and we’ve put a circle around the Golden Eagle.”

Kent Jnr shared that the well-bred Illative (I Am Invincible) has returned to the duo’s Cranbourne stables after a two-week freshen up following her unplaced effort on debut at Flemington.

Laced Up Heels | Image courtesy of Western Racepix

“She (Illative) scoped with grade two mucus post-race, which is certainly performance-affecting,” Kent Jnr said.

“We haven’t lost any confidence in her, she got quite lost down the straight and it was a slowly run race.

US$380k Violence colt tops Fasig

The Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale gained momentum throughout its opening session, ending with figures ahead of last year's opening session after a brisk evening of just 100 catalogued head. A colt by Violence (USA) brought the night's top price when Chris Baccari, bidding alongside trainer Ken McPeek, went to US$380,000 ($585,000) on behalf of country singer Toby Keith.

A total of 53 yearlings sold Sunday for US$5,999,000 ($9,236,600). The average of US$113,189 ($174,275) was up 5% from last year's opening-session figure of US$107,813 ($165,998), while the median of US$100,000 ($153,969) was up 29.9% from US$77,000 ($118,556) a year ago. With 28 horses reported not sold, the buy-back rate was 34.6%.

“It was a very good opening session to the 2023 New York-bred Yearling Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. “It seemed a tiny bit sticky at the beginning, with a little higher RNA rate that kind of smoothed out as the sale progressed. But it was a solid sale, a good sale. Last year was essentially a record-breaking sale and to be statistically improved in two key categories is a really good start.”

Looking Ahead - August 15

2 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Just the two runners for us to look at on Tuesday; the first is a Tavistock (NZ) mare who debuts on the synthetic surface at Ballarat, while the second is a Kermadec (NZ) filly that will be looking to go one better than her first start.

Ballarat-Synthetic, Race 1, 1.30pm AEST, Brandt Mdn Plate, $27,000, 1500m

Dashing Duchess (NZ), 4-year-old mare (Tavistock {NZ} x Charlotte Russe {NZ} {Red Ransom {USA}})

After being passed in at the 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale (Book 1), Dashing Duchess (NZ) made $125,000 at the 2021 Inglis Ready2Race Sale. She was offered by Cheltenham Stables and bought by Wilde Racing.

The mare is the sixth foal of a 1600 metre winner, who has thrown the three-time winner and Group 3 placegetter Poppiholla (NZ) (Pentire {GB}).

Dashing Duchess’ second dam, Candy (NZ) (Grosvenor {NZ}), scored in Listed grade and she is a sister to the Group 1 hero Captain Moonlight (NZ) and a three-quarter sister to the Group 1 winner Richfield Lady (NZ) (Grosvenor {NZ}) and the stakes performer Belong (NZ) (Grosvenor {NZ}).

The Symon Wilde-trained mare has the services of Tahlia Hope.

Gunnedah, Race 3, 2.35pm AEST, Thank You Landcare Australia Mdn Plate, $27,000, 1250m

Scholl Deep, 3-year-old filly (Kermadec {NZ} x Lohgairo {Lonhro})

A homebred, this filly is from a two-time winner who has produced last year’s G2 Skyline S. victor Promitto (Divine Prophet).

The 3-year-old’s grandam, Air She Goes (Air De France {USA}), was a two-time Listed winner and is a sister to the stakes performer Sir Debonaire.

Kermadec (NZ) | Standing at Darley

Trained by David Atkins, Scholl Deep finished second on debut at her home track (Newcastle) on July 25.

Clayton Gallagher takes the ride.

Looking Back

From Sunday, Power Beau (Brazen Beau) was scratched from Race 1 at Moe, while Keepmeinthelope (Lope De Vega {Ire}) ran third. In Race 3 Guerrera (Toronado {Ire}) was third.
