Sale: Listed Sale Cup, $200,000, 1600m
A short-priced favourite on the back of his dominant Caulfield victory a couple of weeks ago, Maktoob (GB) (Awtaad {Ire}) showed plenty of heart wearing down leader and fellow import Keats (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) over the final stages of this 1600 metre provincial feature.
The Shadwell-bred gelding, who was purchased by Colm Sharkey for 50,000gns (AU$100,500) at the 2021 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, is the 11th stakes winner for his G1 Irish 2000 Guineas-winning Derrinstown Stud-based sire, a son of Cape Cross (Ire).
His dam is the unraced Mudawanah (GB) (Dansili {GB}) whose dam is the Listed Feilden S. winner Rumoush (USA) (Rahy {USA}), also dam of the dual Group 3 winner Muntazah (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the Group 3 winner Talaayeb (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the Listed Fortune S. winner Wadilsafa (GB) (Frankel {GB}).
Rumoush is one of the three stakes winners for the dual Listed winner Sarayir (USA) (Mr Prospector {USA}), also dam of the G3 Cumberland Lodge S. winner Mawatheeq (USA) (Danzig {USA}) and the triple Group 1-winning mare Ghanaati (USA) (Giant's Causeway {USA}) - dam of the Group winners Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Wafy (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).
Sarayir is ancestress of another dozen stakes winners including the 2019 G1 Sydney Cup winner Shraaoh (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and the 2022 G2 ATC Chairman's H. winner Raheen House (Ire) (Sea The Stars).
A descendant of the influential matriarch Feola (GB) (Friar Marcus {GB}), Maktoob has parents bred no the same Danzig (USA)/Rahy (USA)/Mr Prospector (USA) cross and he is also 6 X 6 the great Nijinsky II (Can).
Northam: Listed Northam Cup, $150,000, 1600m
Game weaving through the field, Let's Galahvant (Galah) justified a short quote with his gusty victory - his second at stakes level on the back of his Listed Hannan's H. success last September.
Bred by Rangeview Stud and sold by them to Pearce Racing for $10,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale (Book 2), he is the sole stakes winner for his sire, a dual Group-winning son of Redoute's Choice.
HIs dam is the placed mare Secret Crush (So Secret) who has also produced by Galah the winners Gallant Ranger, Bush Icon and Yourtheoneforme.
A mare who has not had a great deal of luck in recent times - slipping last spring to Wandjina and losing her previous two foals by Royal Meeting (Ire) and Long Leaf, Secret Crush is out of the Group 3-placed Graceton (Fimiston) - also dam of the triple Listed winner Keyton Grace (Key Business) and the dual Listed winner Shock Value (Key Business).
Bred on a 3 X 4 cross of Danehill (USA) via Redoute's Choice and Danetime (Ire), Let's Galahvant also carries a cross of the classy broodmare Courtesy (USA) (Nasrullah {Ire}) via her descendant Forty Niner (USA) and son Dignitas (USA).
