Woburn Farm New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale Preview: Part 2

Sponsored by
5 min read

It is a strong Karaka draft being presented by Woburn Farm this year; well-related colts and fillies by a variety of proven high-class stallions - such as Fastnet Rock, Written Tycoon, Wootton Bassett (GB) and Per Incanto (USA) - and exciting up-and-comers including Tagaloa, North Pacific and Circus Maximus (Ire).

Established in 2012, Woburn Farm is situated on 84 acres of prime Waikato land and specialises in agistment and sales preparation. The farm, owned and operated by experienced horseman Adrian Stanley, also offers pre-training and rehabilitation services.

We have already had a look at the first seven of Woburn Farm’s exciting Karaka draft, now we take a peep at the remaining yearlings…

Lot 392: Tagaloa x Shantha’s Girl (Redoute’s Choice) (bay colt)

One of the most prolific line-breeding forces of recent times is the wonderful mare Best In Show (USA) (Traffic Judge {USA}) and the best way to make the most of her influence has been via her descendant Redoute’s Choice with Last Tycoon (Ire) whose sire Try My Best (USA) is her grandson.

This combination - one present in this colt’s pedigree - has produced 84 stakes winners, twelve of whom have been successful at Group 1 level.

Lot 541: Russian Revolution x Zealot (Casino Prince) (black/brown filly)

Her dual Group 1-winning sire, a son of the great Snitzel, has already sired the triple Group winner Revolutionary Miss out of a mare carrying a strain of Casino Prince’s sire Flying Spur - noting that he is a descendant of Russian Revolution’s famous fourth dam Fanfreluche (Can) (Northern Dancer {Can}).

As noted with Lot 392, Best In Show via Last Tycoon and Redoute’s Choice is a winning combination and this filly’s dam is 3 X 3 the former

Her dam is a proven broodmare with her four winners including the G3 Shaftesbury Avenue H. winner Violate (Sebring) and her dam is the G1 Emirates S. winner Sky Cuddle (Snippets) who also produced the two times Group winner Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt).

Lot 553: Written Tycoon x Affairoftheheart (NZ) (Fusaichi Pegasus {USA}) (chestnut colt)

Bred on the same Written Tycoon/Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) cross as Capitalist and three other stakes winners, he is a half-brother to the G1 New Zealand Derby and dual Group 2 winner Rocket Spade (NZ) (Fastnet Rock).

His dam is a stakes placed six times-winning Call Me Lily (NZ) (Just A Dancer {NZ}) who also produced the dual Group 1 winner Soriano (NZ) (Savabeel) and the G3 Premiers Cup winner Kaiser Franz (NZ) (Savabeel).

Lot 594: North Pacific x Auckland Beauty (Redoute’s Choice) (bay/brown colt)

Carrying three strains of the G1 Golden Slipper-winning high-class stallion Canny Lad, he is a half-brother to the promising Havlicek (Astern) out of a Sandown winning daughter of the G2 Shorts winner Fritz’s Princess (More Than Ready {USA}).

Twice placed in Group 1 features, Fritz’s Princess (daughter of another Group 1 placegetter in Superb Lady by Canny Lad) is the grandam of last year’s Listed Manihi Classic winner Little Miss Kubi (Headwater).

Lot 615: Per Incanto (USA) x Bits And Pieces (NZ) (Snippetson) (bay colt)

The son of a proven Group 1 stallion, he is the first foal for a metropolitan placed winner whose dam is a half-sister to the NZ Champion Sprinter Tavistock (NZ) - the two times Group 1 winner who did such a wonderful job at stud.

Street Cry (Ire) horses love mares with Danehill (USA) strains (little wonder with Street Cry being by that stallion’s close relation Machiavellian {USA}) and Per Incanto (USA) is no exception - siring nine stakes winners on this cross including his Group 1 winners Bonham (NZ) and Belclere (NZ).

And he boasts a particularly good record with mares by this fellow’s second damsire Danasinga - an impressive 75.8% winners-to-runners strike rate.

The tough and classy stayer Precedence (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) hails from this family as does the G1 Japan Cup winner Jupiter Island (GB) (St Paddy {GB}).

Lot 634: Circus Maximus (Ire) x Cassini (Reset) (bay colt)

A member of the debut crop of his Windsor Park based multiple Group 1 winning sire, he is out of a Group 3 Manawatu Cup and dual Listed winning mare whose first two foals have both displayed talent including the stakes placed five times winner Peribaldo (NZ) (Dalghar {Fr}).

One of the four winners produced by her dam Mathematical (NZ) (Honor Grades {USA}), Cassini is a granddaughter of the G1 Western Australian Oaks winner True Devotion (Beau Sovereign {NZ}), dam of the stakes winners Centrofold (NZ) (Centro {NZ}) and Smart Kid (NZ) (Kaapstad {NZ}).

Boasting a cross of the great mare Special (USA) (Forli {Arg}), this colt is bred on a Galileo (Ire)/Zabeel (NZ) cross, one which has been represented by six Group 1 winners amongst 26 stakes winners.

Lot 658: Almanzor (Fr) x Cinnadream (King Of Kings {Ire}) (bay filly)

Her city placed two times winning dam is doing a great job with six of her seven foals to race being winners including the G2 Championship S. winner Tavidream (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) who has also proven successful in Hong Kong.

Also dam of the stakes placed Tiz Magic (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) and the multiple city winning Hong Kong-based galloper Super Winner (NZ) (Guillotine {NZ}), Cinnadream is out of a Zabeel (NZ) four times winning city placed half-sister to the G1 Manawatu Sires' Produce winner Kindacross (NZ) (Cape Cross {Ire}), the G2 Perth Cup winner Respect (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and the dam of the dual Group 1 winner Tarzino (NZ).

Boasting crosses of the terrific mares Special (USA) (Forli {Arg}) and Gay Hostess (USA) (Royal Charger {GB}), he is bred on the same Almanzor/Sadler’s Wells (USA) cross as the VRC Derby hero Manzoice.
