Confirmed after speculation last month, outstanding 2-year-old Storm Boy (Justify {USA}) has been purchased by Coolmore for an undisclosed sum and will remain in training with Tulloch Lodge trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Storm Boy has developed a huge reputation during his fledgling career, posting three wins from as many starts, and he is all the rage for the world’s richest race for juveniles, the March 23 G1 Golden Slipper S., which Coolmore won last year with Shinzo (Snitzel).

Following two impressive trial victories, Storm Boy saluted by 2.28l on debut at Rosehill in early December, before scoring a 2.4l triumph in the G3 BJ McLachlan S. at Eagle Farm three weeks later. The colt was sent out a warm favourite for the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on January 13, and, after a sluggish getaway and doing some work early, he dashed away from his rivals to notch a stunning 2.5l victory.

Storm Boy clocked 1:08.00 for the 1200-metre Millions journey, which was quicker than the time the 5-year-old, Group 3-winning sprinter King Of Sparta (I Am Invincible) ran in winning the Magic Millions Snippets on the same program.

Coolmore Australia boss Tom Magnier said the acquisition of the exceptional colt is a huge coup.

“We are extremely excited to secure Storm Boy with a great group of clients and friends from all over the world. His performance in the Magic Millions had to be seen to be believed. He had to do the work at both ends and broke his opponents’ hearts in a similar way to what Justify himself did in his own racing career,” Magnier said.

“We have had a close eye on this colt since his first trial and he has raised the bar each time he has been seen in public.”

Not only is Storm Boy a top-quality racehorse, he boasts a stallion’s pedigree.

The colt is by Coolmore’s shuttle star Justify, who has 39 stakes wins and six Group 1s to his credit. Justify himself is by the multiple Grade 1 hero Scat Daddy (USA) - a sire of 31 individual top-flight winners. Coolmore associate Michael Tabor bought an interest in Scat Daddy after his success in the 2006 G2 Sanford S. and he stood at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

Storm Boy is out of Pelican (NZ) a two-time winner and two. She is a daughter of Fastnet Rock. He is one of Coolmore’s all-time great stallions with 43 elite-company victories on his CV.

Pelican is a half-sister to the three-time scorer and Group 3 placegetter Divan (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}). The colt’s grandam, Seachange (NZ) (Cape Cross {Ire}), was a superstar, chalking up 14 wins, half of them at the top level. She earned the titles of New Zealand Horse of the Year in 2006/07 and 2007/08 and Champion Sprinter in New Zealand in 2007/08.

Justify (USA) | Standing at Coolmore

Ex-pat Australian Byron Rogers, who is the managing partner at Performance Genetics LLC in Kentucky and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the bloodstock space, recently told The Thoroughbred Report Storm Boy was an obvious target for Coolmore.

“Coolmore have really shown that when they get a stallion they really believe in, they go about securing the best sons of them to solidify the reputation of the stallion,” Rogers said.

“With a horse like Justify, they’re following the path that they’d been down with Sadler’s Wells, Galileo, Danehill and other stallions that have proven themselves to be outstanding stallions. That’s the playbook that Coolmore uses and it’s proven to be very successful for them.”

Byron Rogers

Coolmore reportedly paid US$75 million (AU$100 million at the time) for Justify - the unbeaten, US Triple Crown hero.

Justify is the sire of Northern Hemisphere-based topliners such as City Of Troy (USA), Opera Singer (USA), Ramatuelle (USA) and Just F Y I (USA), while in the Southern Hemisphere, his stakes winners, other than Storm Boy, include Learning to Fly, Legacies and Air Assault.

“Storm Boy being by Justify is obviously a huge positive for us, as we are of the firm belief that what Justify is currently doing as a sire is only the tip of the iceberg for him,” said Magnier.

“Storm Boy being by Justify is obviously a huge positive for us, as we are of the firm belief that what Justify is currently doing as a sire is only the tip of the iceberg for him.” - Tom Magnier

“Through the likes of City Of Troy, Opera Singer and Ramatuelle in Europe, Just F Y I and Hard To Justify in America, and now Storm Boy in Australia, he is quite clearly the best sire of 2-year-olds in the world.”

Returning home

Storm Boy was bred by Rob and Barbara McClure’s Morning Rise Stud, along with Coolmore partners. He was foaled and raised at Coolmore, before it offered the colt at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The colt was knocked down to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott Racing/Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $460,000.

“We want to be involved in Justify’s best sons globally, but given that Storm Boy was raised and grazed at Coolmore makes him even more special for us to be part of,” Magnier commented.

“We must congratulate Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for producing yet another exceptional colt.

“It is also a wonderful achievement for the McClure family with whom we bred Storm Boy in partnership with and for the Cunningham family and all the other owners who have shared in his ownership.”

Pepper Tree Farm primed for Classic debut

7 min read
Fresh from selling under its own banner for the first time in January, the team at Pepper Tree Farm can’t wait to get to Riverside Stables this week and next week, where it will present its first-ever draft at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

It wasn’t until recently that Damian Kirwan and his partner, Dr Brianna Vandyke - relatively new owners of the Cowra-based Pepper Tree Farm - made the decision to commence selling horses under its own name.

Up until that point, Pepper Tree Farm had other farms act as agent, usually Victoria’s Blue Gum Farm.

Last month, Pepper Tree Farm proudly presented a draft of three at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and on Tuesday, it will offer two horses at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Kirwan - an Irishman who has worked at a number of studs across Ireland, Western Australia, New Zealand and New South Wales - told The Thoroughbred Report he is extremely proud of what the small team has achieved since Vandyke and he took ownership of the property in mid-2023.

“It was so nice to not only have the yearlings there in the farm’s name, but also to see the staff in our uniforms, and have our brand in the ring. It was probably a bit surreal, to be honest,” Kirwan said.

“It was so nice to not only have the yearlings there (at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale) in the farm’s name, but also to see the staff in our uniforms, and have our brand in the ring.” - Damian Kirwan

“We wanted to keep our numbers small this year and we anticipated a few teething problems. It was always going to be a massive learning curve for us.

“Luckily, our stud manager Robert (Sims), he’s very experienced at taking very good drafts and very high-class drafts from his time at Tyreel Stud, so having him there to guide us through it was a huge help.”

Pepper Tree’s three yearlings grossed $445,000 at an average of $148,333. The top-seller was Lot 222 - a colt from the winning Iffraaj (GB) mare Sororia (NZ), who was bought by DGR Thoroughbred Services (FBAA)/John Sargent Racing for $240,000. Fittingly, the colt is a son of New Zealand’s premiership-winning stallion Proisir, who Kirwan worked with during a stint at Rich Hill Stud.

“It was fantastic to stick our toe in the water and get a feel for it, and we learnt a lot,” said Kirwan.

“When those horses were in the ring, it’s a bit like an out-of-body experience, because you’re so caught up in the moment, and there’s so much apprehension and nerves attached to it, too.”

Pepper Tree will offer a Bivouac filly and a King’s Legacy colt at Riverside Stables, with both yearlings to go through the ring on Day 3 (Tuesday).

“We’re very proud and excited to be selling these two horses next week. We think they’re both very nice yearlings,” Kirwan remarked.

“Having done Magics, we feel more comfortable and better-prepared.”

Lot 733 is the first foal from the Snitzel mare Spiritual Pursuit, herself a three-time winner and Group 3 placegetter who is a half-sister to Group 3-placed Bohemian Daisy (Hellbent).

The Bivouac filly’s second dam, Happy Hippy (Shamardal {USA}), scored twice in Listed grade. A three-quarter sister to the Listed victress My Nikita (NZ) (Shamoline Warrior), Happy Hippy has produced eight foals, seven have raced and four are winners, including the seven-time scorer, the Bjorn Baker-trained Wategos (Capitalist).

Pepper Tree Farm purchased the filly from the Amarina Farm draft at last year’s Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $50,000.

“We pinhooked this filly at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale last year on Rob’s advice. He worked very closely with that family at Tyreel Stud and he quite liked her, he thought she would develop into a nice yearling, which she has,” Kirwan commented.

“It’s such a good, running family. Everything out of Happy Hippy has just got up and running, and more importantly for the Australian market, has got up and going early.”

Lot 753 - the colt by King’s Legacy - is from the winless So You Think (NZ) mare Supergo, who Pepper Tree Farm just $10,000 for at the 2020 Inglis 2020 March (Late) Online Sale. Supergo was in foal to Extreme Choice at the time and the resultant foal, a filly, was purchased by Trilogy Racing for $350,000 from the Blue Gum Farm consignment at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

This colt is closely related to stakes winners including San Andreas (Smart Missile), Banc De Fortune (Galileo {Ire}) and Zingam (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).

“Superego is the first mare Brianna and I ever bought, so we bred this colt ourselves. She has been very good to us. Her second foal, a Harry Angel colt, made $100,000 (at the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale when consigned by Blue Gum Farm),” Kirwan explained.

Lot 753 - King's Legacy x Superego (colt) | Image courtesy of Inglis

“We were very bullish on King’s Legacy from the start, we sent two mares to him in his first season. Redoute’s Choice’s record as a sire of sires… the fact he’s so closely related to Not A Single Doubt, the fact he was a dual Group 1-winning 2-year-old, we just thought he was so well-credentialed, and when we went to see him at Coolmore we were blown away by him on type, I could see a lot of resemblance to Not A Single Doubt physically.

“We were very bullish on King’s Legacy from the start, we sent two mares to him in his first season.” - Damian Kirwan

“That Easy Date family has proven itself time and time again, so we thought he had a very good chance of making it.”

The evolution of Pepper Tree Farm

Situated in Cowra in the Central Slopes region of New South Wales, Pepper Tree Farm was established in 1996 by Vandyke’s parents, Rob and Julie Vandyke.

Over time, Pepper Tree Farm was developed by Rob and Julie into one of the leading standardbred studs in Australasia, standing top stallions such as Art Major and Rock N Roll Heaven.

In 2015, Brianna Vandyke set up the Pepper Tree Farm Equine Clinic on the farm and expanded the breeding program to include thoroughbred clients. Today, Pepper Tree Farm provides agistment, breeding and reproductive services for mares, foaling, weaning and yearling preparations, as well as a world-class equine veterinary practice.

The size of Pepper Tree’s broodmare band sits at eight, but with their breeding and agistment services, they had up to 120 mares during the last season.

Kirwan and Vandyke intend to increase their broodmare band over time.

“We’re not in a rush and we want to do things properly,” he said.

“We try to breed our mares commercially.

“Next season, we will probably end up with 20-25 yearlings to target at the sales, which is really good.”

Kirwan acknowledged Blue Gum Farm’s former owners, Philip and Patti Campbell, for their ongoing support and advice. Kirwan developed a relationship with the Campbells during eight years working for Blue Gum Farm.

“When Brianna and I branched out into this venture together, they supported us amazingly well, they really helped get us to where we are today. We are extremely appreciative of their loyalty and for giving us a chance,” said Kirwan.

Pedigree Boosters: Inglis Classic Yearling Sale

4 min read
Ahead of the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, we have found three yearlings who have had substantial pedigree updates over the past couple of months.

Cover image courtesy of Inglis

Since the catalogue for the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale has gone to print, a host of yearlings will go through the ring at the Riverside complex and have had their pedigrees enhanced, which is important information for vendors and buyers alike.

Lot 625 - Deep Field x Real Desire (Wanted), colt - on account of HP Thoroughbreds

Lot 625, arguably, will already attract plenty of attention being a son of the now pensioned Deep Field. However, he received further updates when his half-sister and 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale graduate Skybird (Exosphere) burst on the scene during the spring for Mitch Freedman.

Skybird went from a BM64 victory at Bendigo to winning the G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic and placing in the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield. Lot 625 is the fourth foal from the Wanted mare, Real Desire, who is a granddaughter of Snow Finch (Ire) (Storm Cat {USA}).

Snow Finch won the Listed Orby S. in Ireland and is the dam of the outstanding producer Snippets’ Lass (Snippets), a seven-time winner, including twice at Listed level, the daughter of Snippets proved more influential off the track than on it.

Snippets’ Lass’ second foal, Snitzel, would win the G1 Oakleigh Plate and the G2 Challenge S., as well as placing in the G1 Newmarket H. and the G1 TJ Smith S. before he retired to Arrowfield Stud where he has been crowned Australia’s Champion Sire four times.

Furthermore, this is also the family of the Group 1-producing sire Hinchinbrook, the Group 2-winning juvenile Arcaded (Street Boss {USA}) and the Group 3 winner Viennese (Snitzel).

Lot 458 - The Autumn Sun x Mantra Of Life (USA) (Dubawi {Ire}), filly - on account of Arrowfield Stud

This strongly built daughter of The Autumn Sun received a timely update to her already extensive pedigree when her full brother, Know Thyself, scored an impressive debut victory at Newcastle on Tuesday.

Lot 458’s pedigree page mentions some of the most revered stallions of recent times: Redoute’s Choice, Galileo (Ire) and Dubawi (Ire). The filly’s dam Mantra Of Life (USA) retired unraced, but she is a daughter of the Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed juvenile Loving Kindness (USA), a daughter of the North American Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew (USA).

Mantra Of Life is a half-sister to the Listed winner Peace Camp (USA) (Storm Cat {USA}) and the Group 3-placed Cloudbridge (USA) (Hard Spun {USA}).

Adding further lustre to the page of Lot 458 is her third dam, Coup De Genie (USA) (Mr Prospector {USA}), a Champion 2-Year-Old Filly in France. Coup De Genie won the G1 Prix Morny and the G1 Prix de la Salamandre. In addition, she was also placed in the G1 English 1000 Guineas and fourth in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

While Juddmonte Farms’ brilliant galloper Emollient (USA) (Empire Maker {USA}) is also on the page. Emollient was a victress of six races, including the G1 Ashland S., the G1 Spinster S. and the G1 Hollywood Park American Oaks.

Lot 792 - Russian Camelot (Ire) x Transonic (Casino Prince), colt - on account of Telemon Thoroughbreds

Telemon Thoroughbreds will offer a son of Widden Stud’s freshman, Russian Camelot (Ire), who, in a short career, compiled a classy race record with Group 1 success in the G1 Underwood S. and the G1 South Australia Derby, alongside placings in the G1 Makybe Diva S., the G1 Caulfield S. and the G1 WS Cox Plate.

Not only does Russian Camelot bring race performance to this page, but Lot 792’s half-sister Abounding (Rich Enuff) has hit a gold mine of form. The Robert Heathcote-trained filly scored a stakes breakthrough in the Listed Gold Edition Plate. She backed that performance up in the R. Listed Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, bringing her career earnings to over $2 million.

Lot 792 is the seventh foal from the Casino Prince mare Transonic, who showed plenty of ability herself, winning four races and placing in the G2 Wakeful S. and the Listed Ethereal S.

Transonic is a daughter of Jet Past (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}), who was placed in the G1 Clairwood Thekwini S. and the G1 Woolavington S.

'We’ll give her every chance to get to the Blue Diamond' - Warren thrilled with Exceedance's Flyer

Mornington-based horseman Jason Warren looked to have a smart prospect on hands when his 2-year-old filly Flyer (Exceedance) burst through a gap late to deny the Godolphin runner Last Druid (Brazen Beau) success in Race 3 at Sandown-Lakeside.

Finishing strongly in the 1200-metre maiden was the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Barbaric Lad (Brutal {NZ}).

It was an impressive performance from the debutante and lone filly in the event. Warren indicated the Rosemont Stud and Brett Chapman-owned Flyer could now head towards the G1 Blue Diamond at the end of the month.

“We’ll give her every chance to get to the Blue Diamond, that’s our plan,” Warren told Racing.com post-race.

“We ideally wanted to have one run into the main race. She’s done all that she’s had to do.”

“We ideally wanted to have one run into the main race. She’s (Flyer) done all that she’s had to do.” - Jason Warren

Warren revealed that Flyer had been compared to her Group 3-winning sister Treasurway in the early days of her brief career.

“As much as we like Treasurway, she’s got a bit of an awkward action. Whereas Flyer has a very neat, economical action and we’ve liked her all the way through.

“She’s improving and the bigger track here today (Wednesday), the chance to balance up, I thought was perfect and well worth waiting for.

“Dan Stackhouse (jockey) has done a terrific job and really earned his riding fee there. He’s gone where angels fear to tread through a very narrow gap.”

Flyer is the third individual winner from eight runners for Vinery Stud’s first-season sire Exceedance. The G1 Coolmore Stud S. winner has made a fabulous start to his career with his son Dublin Down already prevailing in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

Rosemont Stud and Chapman bred the daughter of Exceedance and have retained the ownership.

The filly is the second foal from the Toorak Toff mare Miss Toorak Flyer. She won four races up to 1200 metres. Flyer is a half-sister to Treasurway (Starspangledbanner), who was victorious as a 2-year-old in the G3 Breeders’ S.

Treasurway also finished third in the G3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. and the Listed Furphy Trophy.

Other notable members of this family include the 11-time winner Secret Flyer (Secret Savings {USA}), who prevailed in the Listed Kensington S. and the Listed Sir John Monash S.

While Luvaluva (NZ) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) won six races, including the G2 Wakeful S. and the G3 Adrian Knox S. the daughter of Mastercraftman (Ire) was also Group 1-placed.

Luvaluva is a half-sister to Brandenburg (NZ) (Burgundy {NZ}), who won the G2 Hobartville S. and was placed in the G1 Doncaster H., the G1 Randwick Guineas and the G1 Doomben Cup.

Snowden quinella at Warwick Farm

Wednesday’s juvenile event at Warwick Farm saw the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained stable to the fore, with the Randwick-based trainers providing the quinella in the 2-year-old 1300-metre maiden.

Tommy Berry partnered Waterville (Menari), to defeat her stablemate the short-priced Evenflow (Super Seth). Meanwhile, the Clarry Conners-trained Okami Star (Justify {USA}) finished third in the field of seven 2-year-olds.

Co-trainer Paul Snowden told Sky Racing post-race, “Waterville has always been a lovely filly from day one. She’s a big, imposing, lump of a girl. Waterville has some size about her, and no doubt she will improve massively fitness-wise from this race.

“Her race manners are very on point maturity-wise. The mental aspect is all there; it is just a matter of her body catching up with her mind to make the full package.

“I think she will appreciate a little further distance in time.”

Snowden also touched on the effort from the second-placed Evenflow, “I thought the colt was great. He was back-up from last Wednesday.

“He narrowly got beaten on the line, and I think he will come quite a lot in from this race.”

Waterville was bred by Codds Flat Bloodstock and was not offered for public auction. The filly is by the late Menari, who initially stood at Newgate Farm but fertility troubles saw him transferred to his breeders’ property Corumbene Stud.

Trained by Gerald Ryan, Menari showed stacks of ability scoring victories in the G2 Run to the Rose and the Listed The Rosebud.

Waterville is the first foal from the Dissident mare Turncoats, who is a granddaughter of Ateates (Zeditave). She won six races, including the G2 Silver Shadow S. and the G2 Expressway S.

Ateates was also placed in the G1 Goodwood H. and finished fourth in the G1 The Galaxy and the G1 TJ Smith S.

At stud, Ateates is the dam of the brilliant Elite Street (Street Boss {USA}), a victor of the G1 Winterbottom S. and nine other races.

Ateates has been served by a number of Newgate Farm-based sires. She has a yearling by Tassort and foaled a colt, by Tiger Of Malay, in August. Ateates was served by In The Congo but missed before being covered by Russian Revolution.

Eight rivals for Mr Brightside in Orr

Saturday’s G1 CF Orr S. at Caulfield has attracted a field of nine runners, headlined by the four-time elite-level winner Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars). He will jump from barrier four under Craig Williams.

Mr Brightside ran fifth, beaten just 0.8l, in last year’s Orr S. when it was held at Sandown-Hillside.

The Lindsay Park-trained star’s opposition are Pericles (Street Boss {USA}), Munhamek (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Bustler (Playing God), Buffalo River (USA) (Noble Mission {GB}), Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}), Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel), Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) and Veight (Grunt {NZ}).

Talented colt Veight will look to become the second 3-year-old to win the race in consecutive years, after Jacquinot was awarded the race 12 months ago on protest. He will break from gate two.

McDonald back for Apollo meeting

Champion Jockey James McDonald has declared he’ll return to race-riding for the Apollo S. meeting on February 17 at Randwick.

McDonald received specialist medical advice which advised him to forfeit his rides this week due to a left foot injury he sustained prior to the running of last Saturday’s G3 Widden S.

“I don’t think going to Hong Kong was a problem, I wasn’t in that much pain when I rode there last Sunday,” McDonald told Punters.

“But since I’ve been back home the bruising and swelling in my foot has become much worse. I need to get the swelling down and it wouldn’t do me any good if I kept riding this week.

“It’s disappointing, it’s another hiccup I didn’t need, but with a few days rest I will be right to ride again. I will definitely be back in the saddle next Saturday for the Apollo S. meeting.”

Alabama Express filly bolts in at Matamata

The Ken and Bev Kelso-trained Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) became the fifth winner and first in New Zealand for Yulong Stud’s freshman sire Alabama Express when she scored by 9.5l at Matamata.

Alabama Lass, who was making her debut, was handled by Sam Spratt.

The 2-year-old filly was bred by Rifa Mustang, before being offered by Shadow Hill Thoroughbreds at last year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. She was bought by Dean Hawthorne of Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock (BAFNZ) / Ken Kelso for $120,000.

Ken Kelso was rapt with the performance and is eyeing the G2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes later this month.

“She was very impressive. She jumped well and then Sam said she relaxed when she got to the front and did it easily,” he said.

“Hopefully, all going well and she pulls up okay, we will come back here for the Breeders’ in two-and-a-half weeks’ time.”

Alabama Lass is from the winning Commands mare Tabliope and she herself is a half-sister to Northern Glory (Northern Meteor) - a winner of three races and a placegetter in Group 3 company.

The filly is a half-sister to the five-time winner and Group 3 placegetter Bad ‘N’ Bouj (Deep Field), as well as Palladas (I Am Invincible), who won four races in Queensland with Tony Gollan.

Ducasse a maiden no longer

Talented 3-year-old Ducasse (Trapeze Artist) broke through at the seventh time of asking, with the colt shedding his maiden status in a 1200-metre Warwick Farm Super Maiden.

Trained by Michael Freedman, Ducasse placed third in Group 2 level during the spring

Ducasse is from the Listed victress Custard (Lonhro), making him a half-brother to the Group 3 scorer Serene Majesty (Fastnet Rock) and the Listed winner Curdled (All Too Hard).

Michael Freedman Racing / Julian Blaxland Bloodstock (FBAA) paid Segenhoe Thoroughbreds $280,000 for the colt at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He is raced by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia, along with others including Rifa Mustang, G1G Colts & Breeding and Sledmere Stud.

Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist has 29 individual winners this season and they have combined for 33 wins, making him the leading second-season sire.

Juvenile quinella for Snowdens

The Team Snowden-trained Waterville (Menari) touched off stablemate Evenflow (Super Seth) in Race 1 at Warwick Farm, providing Peter and Paul Snowden a one-two in the 2-year-old race.

Bred by Codds Flat Bloodstock, Waterville is out of the winning Dissident mare Turncoat, and the filly’s third dam, Ateates (Zeditave), won six races, including four Group 2s.

Trainers declare filly ‘vulnerable’

Ben, Will and JD Hayes are under no illusions that their smart filly Bold Bastille (Brazen Beau) is vulnerable when she returns in Saturday’s G2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies) at Caulfield. The daughter of Brazen Beau was an impressive debut winner of the R. Listed Inglis Banner on Cox Plate Day in October last year but has been on the sidelines since.

“We are very happy with her, she’s come in off one trial and she went really nicely; it was exactly what we wanted to see,” JD Hayes told Racing.com.

“She’s going to be a little bit vulnerable on Saturday, having just one trial, but it’ll stand her in good stead to be 100 per cent ready for the Blue Diamond.”

Mertens set for hospital release

Group 1-winning jockey, Beau Mertens, is set to be released from Traralgon Hospital in the next 24 hours, following further CT scans on Wednesday afternoon.

Mertens was involved in a fall on Tuesday at Stony Creek, that saw the David Brideoake and Matt Jenkins-trained Nobiallo (Dundeel {NZ}) humanely euthanised.

Mertens reportedly sustained a cracked rib and internal bruising from the accident.

“He’s feeling much better today (Wednesday) than he was last night and he sounded like the Beau of usual,” Victorian Jockeys’ Association boss Matt Hyland told Racing.com.

“He is a bit sore with a cracked rib, but all in all feeling better and keen to get home.”

Mertens also sustained a concussion and as a result will be stood down from race riding for the mandatory 12-day period. Dr Ben Barresi will assess Mertens before being cleared to return to riding.

Kah hopes for a better year

Jamie Kah spent significant time on the sidelines recovering from a brain injury sustained in March last year, but revealed she is finally feeling like things have returned to normal as she prepares for 2024.

“I’m hoping for a better year. I’m hoping for better things,” Kah told Racing.com’s program After The Last.

“The recovery did take a lot longer than I thought. I was fine to ride, but I wasn’t myself. I’m back to 100 per cent now. It was a big time of my life. It really knocked me about and took a lot longer to get ready. I got very, very tired towards the end of the year. Doctors told me that was a condition of what happened. I was exhausted every day. But now I feel back to normal.

“You literally wake up one day and feel ‘I’m okay’. There’s nothing you can do about it. Brain injuries aren’t fun.”

Dwyer: Asfoora never looked better

Henry Dwyer concedes if Asfoora (Flying Artie) has any chance of winning the G1 Oakleigh Plate, she should be winning the G2 Rubition S. on Saturday, when she steps out for the first time this preparation that could lead to an international preparation.

“I expect her to win, subject to barriers or track conditions but she’s heading to Caulfield in great form,” Dwyer told RSN927.

“I’ve never seen her look better. Nothing is ever concrete, but she’ll go to the Oakleigh Plate second-up, but she would want to be winning on Saturday if we have any chance of securing the Oakleigh Plate.”

Attrition targets Futurity

Mitch Freedman’s G1 Toorak H. winner Attrition (Churchill {Ire}) will bypass Saturday’s G1 CF Orr S. in favour of the G1 Futurity S. on February 24.

“Attrition is very good. We are not going to run in the CF Orr, it was never our plan,” Freedman revealed to RSN927.

“We have decided to wait until the Futurity, and he’ll head to Ararat on Monday for a jump-out. The timing between the end of the spring and the autumn is tight, and Attrition had a little setback at the end of his spring campaign, so we wanted to tread lightly and I’m not into pushing horses early in a preparation.

“I’m very happy with him. I think he’s still improving as a horse, but I think we will probably see the best of him in the spring.”

Melham the man for Otago

Group 1-winnning jockey Ben Melham will replace the injured Beau Mertens aboard promising 3-year-old Otago (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) in Saturday week’s G3 CS Hayes S. at Flemington, according to Racing.com.

Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Otago boasts two wins from as many starts.

Connections Roll The Dice Racing said no decision had been made on who would ride the gelding if he takes his place in the G1 Australian Guineas on March 2.

Private purchase heading to Australia

Bloodstock agent Matt Houldsworth of Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock shared on social media that he has privately purchased the Joseph O’Brien-trained Gran Caballo (USA) (American Pharoah {USA}) for OTI Racing and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

The 3-year-old gelding was an impressive maiden winner at his third start at Dundalk in Ireland. The son of American Pharoah (USA) is from the Galileo (Ire) mare Shell House (Ire), who was placed in the G3 Give Thanks S.

Gran Caballo is a full brother to the Listed winner, Hudson Ridge (USA).

Relief Rally to race on for Haggas and Yulong

Relief Rally (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), last year’s winner of the G2 Lowther S., has returned to William Haggas’ stable after being sold at Tattersalls in December for 800,000gns (AU$1,600,500). She was knocked down in the name of Mrs A Sullivan at the time.

The filly is now registered on the British Horseracing Authority's website as being owned by Mr Yuesheng Zhang of Yulong Investments.

Relief Rally (Ire) | Image courtesy of Racingfotos.com

Relief Rally is rated 107 after a season in which she was defeated only once in her five starts, and then only by a nose when second in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot. Racing last year for the partnership of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, she won her first two races in April and May, and following Royal Ascot she headed to Newbury for victory in the Weatherbys Super Sprint. Relief Rally's final win of the year in the Lowther at York's Ebor meeting was the third success in that race for Haggas, who also won the G2 Gimcrack S. a day later with Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy's Lake Forest (GB) (No Nay Never {USA}).

Coolmore secure Zetta Z

Zetta Z (USA) (Bernardini {USA}), who was added to the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale catalogue just Sunday, a day after her son Nysos (USA) (Nyquist {USA}) produced a dominating victory in the G3 Robert B. Lewis S., sold for US$2 million (AU$3 million) to the bid of Coolmore's Adrian Wallace Tuesday in Lexington. The 14-year-old mare, consigned by Grovendale Sales, sold in foal to Cyberknife (USA).

She Can’t Sing to Hill ‘n’ Dale for US$1.1 Million

Graded stakes winner She Can't Sing (USA) (Bernardini {USA}) became the second seven-figure mare of the Lothenbach dispersal at Fasig-Tipton Tuesday when selling for US$1.1 million (AU$1.7 million) to the Sikura family's Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. John Sikura did the bidding on the 7-year-old mare before handing off the ticket to his 22-year-old son, Jes, to sign.

She Can’t Sing won eight races, including the G3 Chilukki S. at Churchill Downs and three Listed races. The daughter of Bernardini (USA) is from the family of the outstanding Music Note (USA) (A.P. Indy {USA}), who won five Group 1 races and is the dam of the G1 Dubai World Cup victor Mystic Guide (USA).

Bell’s The One brings US$1.3 Million at Fasig-Tipton

Group 1-winning Bell's The One (USA) (Majesticperfection {USA}) brought a final bid of US$1.3 million (AU$2 million) from bloodstock agent Catherine Hudson, bidding on behalf of an undisclosed client, Tuesday at Fasig-Tipton. Part of the dispersal of the bloodstock of the late Robert Lothenbach, the 8-year-old mare was consigned by Vinery Sales. She will remain in the US, according to Hudson, who added mating plans are still to be decided. Bell’s The One won 13 races, including the G1 Derby City Distaff and the G2 Raven Run S. She is a half-sister to the G3 Knickerbocker S. winner King Cause (USA) (Creative Cause {USA}).

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Thursday, two well-related debutants will step out at Pakenham in Victoria and Wyong in New South Wales.

Cranbourne-based trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr will debut Voracious, a son of Arrowfield Stud’s Maurice (Jpn), at Pakenham on Thursday night.

Voracious is the ninth foal from the Keltrice mare Seven Year Itch. A non-winner on the track, Seven Year Itch has had eight foals to race for six winners. Among her winners are the Listed winners Scratchy Lass (U S Ranger {USA}) and Rich Itch (Danerich).

Seven Year Itch has also produced the five-time winner Ausbred Flirt (Maurice {Jpn}), who was placed in the G3 Angst S. Furthermore, this is the family of the late Viewed (Scenic {Ire}).

The son of Scenic (Ire) was crowned the Champion Stayer in Australia, winning nine races, including the G1 Melbourne Cup, the G1 Caulfield Cup and the G2 Brisbane Cup.

Voracious was a $200,000 purchase by Shrone Bloodstock and Silverdale Farm from the draft of Rangal Park Stud at the 2021 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. Silverdale Farm reoffered Voracious at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where Yes Bloodstock secured him for $500,000.
