Looking Ahead - February 20

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting 3-year-olds are set to run across Australia on Tuesday, including a full brother to the classy sprinter Lost And Running (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}).

Wyong, Race 1, 1.15pm AEDT, Insurance House F&M Mdn H., $42,000, 1100m

Summer Soiree, 3-year-old filly (Russian Revolution x Hot Summer Night {Fusaichi Pegasus {USA}})

The well-related Summer Soiree is set to debut over 1100 metres for Annabel Neasham on the back of a trial win at Randwick on February 8 when winning over 1050 metres.

Summer Soiree is a daughter of Newgate Farm’s exciting sire Russian Revolution and is the fifth foal from the Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) mare Hot Summer Night. She was only placed on the track but has left a mark as a broodmare leaving the Group 2 winner Summer Sham (Not A Single Doubt) who herself has also left a Listed-winning colt in Schwarz (Zoustar).

Summer Soiree sold for $180,000 at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale with Stilletto Sprinters being the successful purchaser from the draft of Vinery Stud.

Summer Soiree’s second dam is the Giant’s Causeway (USA) mare Unspoken Choice, she herself is a half-sister to the late Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice and Group 1 winners Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) and Platinum Scissors (Danehill {USA}).

Summer Soiree holds an interesting pedigree pattern duplicating the great mare Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), as she is by a grandson of Redoute’s Choice in Russian Revolution and also holds Shantha’s Choice as her own third dam.

Hot Summer Night since producing Summer Soiree has an unraced 2-year-old full brother named Revolt who is trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, and Russian Revolution yearling and weanling full sisters. She was served by the Not A Single Doubt stallion Stronger last spring.

Wyong, Race 5, 3.40pm AEDT, Levelmaster Mdn Plate, $42,000, 1300m

Khaznah, 3-year-old filly (Zoustar x Modern Wonder {Snitzel})

The Ciaron Maher-trained Khaznah will have her second start in the Levelmaster Mdn Plate over 1300 metres on the back of a third placing on debut on the same track where she battled on well from an on-pace position.

The well-related filly is the second foal from the Snitzel mare Modern Wonder, who won the Listed SAJC Dequetteville S. over 1100 metres. Khaznah has a very interesting pedigree profile and has been inbred to Redoute’s Choice in her third generation with her sire Zoustar being out of a Redoute’s Choice mare and her dam being by Snitzel, a son of Redoute’s Choice.

Modern Game’s first foal, Wonderwall (Sebring) was a minor winner over 1400 metres and has been served by Vinery Stud’s proven stallion All Too Hard, and her third foal Innervisions (I Am Invincible) looks very promising and was good enough to gain black type at his first start, placing in the Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and Geldings) for trainer Annabel Neasham.

Khaznah’s second dam is the Elusive Quality (USA) mare Elusive Wonder, she was handy on the track as a Listed-placed sprinter but her biggest claim to fame is leaving the super talented Snitzel filly Away Game who won $3,750,225 on the track including the G2 Percy Sykes S., she was very unlucky not to win a Group 1, although did manage three Group 1-placings including a runner-up position in the G1 Golden Slipper.

In more recent times Away Game sold at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale fetching $4 million to the bid of the Written Tycoon Syndicate. Last spring Away Game foaled a Written Tycoon filly and was once again served by Yulong Stud’s Written Tycoon.

Khaznah’s dam Modern Wonder produced a Written Tycoon filly last spring and was most recently served by Australia’s reigning Champion Sire I Am Invincible.

Khaznah was a $360,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock from the draft of Kia Ora Stud at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Paruna (NZ), 3-year-old filly (Per Incanto {USA} x Dreamlife {NZ} {Danroad})

Paruna (NZ), a daughter of Little Avondale’s stallion Per Incanto (USA), will make her second start over 1300 metres at Wyong for Ciaron Maher after a promising debut fourth on the Randwick-Kensington track where she led up and only battled late in the piece.

The Kia Ora Stud-owned filly is the third foal from the Danroad mare Dreamlife (NZ), who only raced three times being unplaced. Dreamlife’s first foal and only other foal to race is the high-quality sprinter Lost And Running (NZ), he won over $4 million on the track and his wins included the G2 Premiere S., G3 Southern Cross S. and the Listed Luskin Star S.

Dreamlife has a yearling colt by Per Incanto and was due to foal to the New Zealand Champion Sire Savabeel last spring. Further back in the pedigree is Kaonic (NZ) (Savabeel) who was a good consistent black-type performer which included winning the Listed Furphy Plate.

Paruna was a $340,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
