Lot 103 - Deep Field x Longduan (Written Tycoon), colt, $120,000

Buyer: Morton Racing, WA

Vendor: Amelia Park Racing & Breeding

Hailing from the penultimate crop of his now retired Group 2-winning sire who fared so well from his Newgate Farm base, this flashy chestnut is the first foal produced by the city placed winning Written Tycoon mare Longduan.

Served last year by Pinatubo (Ire), she is one of the four winners for the two-time stakes-placed metropolitan winner Strata Title (Strategic) whose Group 3-placed daughter Novel Dancer (Written Tycoon) produced the dual Listed winner Pancho (Dissident).

This is a family that has produced classy runners in Western Australia - such as the G3 Champions Fillies S. winner Spirited One (Verglas {Ire}) and the Listed-winning sprinter/miler Xaaravid (Xaar {GB}).

And elsewhere in Australia, this colt is also able to claim amongst his relations the G1 VRC Oaks and G1 1000 Guineas heroine Rom's Stiletto (Sharp Edge {Ire}), the dual G3 Frances Tressady S. winner New Smyrna (Rancho Ruler), the dual Group 3 winner Defcon and the Listed winners Rockettes (Lord Seymour {Ire}) and Extremist (Extreme Choice).

There is overseas form in this family too - the Canadian-based Listed winner Danzigs Silver (USA) (Strolling Along {USA}) and the four-time Listed-winning Macau galloper Dr Sweet (King Cugat {USA}).

With his 69 per cent winners-to-runners strike rate Deep Field is understandably popular with trainers and he can really get a good one with four of his 28 stakes winners being successful at the elite level.

Deep Field

Al Muthana, Sky Field, Voyage Bubble and Portland Sky are Deep Field's big-race winners, noting that the latter - successful in 2021 G1 Oakleigh Plate - was also bred in Western Australia, by Anita Vale Stud.

Dan Morton was the man with his hand in the air securing this colt and he was very pleased to do so, describing the handsome colt as “a cracking type.”

“He is everything I look for in a young horse,” he said. “A beautiful type, a great walker, a good attitude.

“I didn't buy him with a client in mind but Deep Field has done such a good job that a son of his will not be hard to find owners for.”

Such a good job that he is the fourth leading sire in regards to both numbers of winners and numbers of wins.

There is consistency throughout this colt's pedigree - Deep Field's good strike rate already noted whilst his damsire Written Tycoon sits on an exceptional 76.5 per cent winners-to-runners ratio.

Deep Field and Written Tycoon have combined in only a couple of runners so far but with the pedigrees of both stallions nicely influenced by the great mare Mumtaz Begum (Fr) (Blenheim {GB}), there is bound to be success.
