The Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale concluded on Tuesday with the gross and clearance rate down from last year, however, top lot honours eclipsed last year's sale with a Spirit Of Boom colt realising $230,000 late on Day 2.

At A Glance

The sale grossed $8,776,500 (263 sold) compared to last year's total of $10,378,000 (292 sold) with the clearance rate of 75.14 per cent down from last year's 83.91 per cent.

The average of $33,371 was down from last year's $35,541 though the median was up from $26,000 to $28,000.

Last year's highest seller fetched $170,000 whilst this year trainer Clinton Taylor paid $230,000 for a full sister to his smart mare Chinny Boom (Spirit Of Boom).

Last year's second leading vendor went one better this year - Eureka Stud selling 26 horses for an average of $44,019 and a gross of $1,144,500; the top lot seller a member of their draft.

Not only securing the highest-priced lot, Clinton Taylor was the biggest buyer overall - taking home five horses for an average of $81,500 and a gross of $407,500. Last year's top buyers Tony Gollan & John Foote were again active purchasing six horses for an average of $60,417, a gross of $362,500.

Lyndhurst Stud's Better Than Ready was the leading sire by gross at $1,267,000 for 33 sold, while Eureka Stud's Spirit Of Boom had the best average $80,929 from 14 sold.

The sale attracted buyers from Queensland, New South Wales, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Victoria, the ACT, South Korea, Thailand and Western Australia.

Colts averaged a little better than fillies - $34,056 vs $32,669.

Chinny Boom's sister steals the show

It was two years ago that a Spirit Of Boom out of Imanoremiss (Made Of Gold {USA}) passed in at this sale for $48,000, ending up in the care of trainer Clinton Taylor. Now four and named Chinny Boom, she has amassed over $575,000 in stakes with her eight wins and two stakes placings from 13 starts.

There looks to be more in store for that bay who was in easy winning form at the Gold Coast last weekend and it was her full sister who attracted the most attention on Day two of this year's sale - a bid of $230,000 securing Lot 346 for Clinton Taylor.

“She was a standout for us,” Taylor said.

“She has a lot of the same traits as Chinny Boom though I'd say that she is actually a better sort at the same age.

“Spirit Of Boom is my favourite staion. We have had really good success with him.”

“Spirit Of Boom is my favourite stallion. We have had really good success with him.” - Clinton Taylor

The Archer at Rockhampton in late April is Chinny Boom's aim, Taylor yet to decide whether she goes straight to that race or has another run.

“She (Chinny Boom) pulled up really well from her last start, exciting times!”

The dam of another five winners including Le Palmier - another multiple city winner by Spirit Of Boom x Imanoremiss (who made another visit to Spirit Of Boom last spring) - is a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Magic Marvo (Bite The Bullet {USA}) from the family of the Listed winners Mistador (Mister C {USA}) and Right Fong (Dr Fong {USA}).

Eureka Stud's Harry McAlpine was very happy with the result, noting that Imanoremiss “always does a good job.”

“As Clint said, this filly is a similar time to Chinny Boom - a very nice type who was very well rewarded for being so.

“If she can run faster than Chinny Boom she could be anything!”

As always McAlpine was proud to show off the Spirit Of Boom breed. “It is an absolute delight to be selling his progeny around the country. He is such a great horse.”

This filly was one of the five six-figure yearlings sold over the two days of the sale; two of those sold on Day 1, the other four today.

Spirit Of Boom - one of Queensland's favourite sons

The second-highest - another by the reliably classy Spirit Of Boom - was Lot 366 sold by Alexia Fraser Bloodstock.

He is a half-brother to the Group 3-placed, eight-time winner Kisukano (Bel Esprit) who did a great job amassing just short of $1 million in stakes, the happy buyer at $160,000 being that talented galloper's trainer Michael Nolan.

The colt's placed dam Kiss For Gran (Show A Heart) is a three-quarter sister to the stakes-placed Show A Prince (Show A Heart) and half-sister to the Listed Silk Stocking winner Princess Margaret (Spectrum {Ire}) - grandam of the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup winner Over Exposure (Rothesay).

This is also the family of the stakes winners Dynamic Love (Brave Warrior), Key Bar Nights (Anabaa {USA}) and Barbed (Canny Lad).

The third six-figure yearling of the sale and the first on Day 2 was Lot 201, yet another by Spirit Of Boom.

Sold by Kenmore Lodge to Bartholomew & Co, Queensland for $100,000, she is the second live foal produced by the metropolitan winner Alnaas (Not A Single Doubt) whose first foal Of Course (Yes Yes Yes) fetched $120,000 in January last year - spelled after trialling for the Steven O'Dea and Matthew Hoysted stable last December.

Alnaas is a full sister to the stakes-placed Maqsad and the Eagle Farm winner Ralph's Honour out of the city placed Moojeh (More Than Ready {USA}) whose Group 1-placed dam Tambour (Marauding {NZ}) produced the superb galloper Grand Armee (Hennessy {USA}) - the winner of seven races at Group 1 level.

And this is also the family of another Group 1 star, Darley's Anamoe - as well as of fellow big race winners Anamato (Redoute's Choice) and Drum (Marauding {NZ}).

“She is a really nice filly,” Kenmore's Kellie Bond said. “An early-running type, typical of the breed - and she has a fair bit of Not A Single Doubt about her too.

“She sold to a newcomer to the racing scene and it will be good to see how she progresses.”

Another Spirit Of Boom from the Kenmore Lodge draft was Lot 237, a filly picked up Proven Thoroughbreds and O'Dea Hoysted Racing for $90,000. She is sadly the only live foal produced by Boom Boom Epic (Sebring) who died last year.

A talented mare who amassed over $280,000 in stakes, she was a half-sister to the R. Listed Magic Millions Guineas winner Saluter (Commands) and the stakes-placed, eight-times winner Epic Girl (Shamus Award) from the family of one of the best ever to come out of Queensland - the mighty Vo Rogue (Ivor Prince {USA}).

“She is also a really nice filly, one with a bit more scope and a lot of quality.”

Kenmore sold another 21 horses, Bond happy overall, noting that “buyers were fairly selective but if an article they wanted was there they were happy to buy.”

Proven Thoroughbreds' Jamie Walter is delighted to to be taking Boom Boom Epic's daughter home, noting she reminded him of the promising Doomben debut winner Heyoka (also by Spirit Of Boom) who he purchased for $60,000 at this same sale two years ago.

“She (Lot 237) is an attractive filly, a very nice type and I am also very happy with her pedigree. Her dam was obviously very handy and her grandam did a good job too. Another positive is that she comes off a good farm, buying from such professional studs gives me a lot of confidence.”

A tough market at an important sale

Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch acknowledged that it was a tough sale for vendors.

“It is no secret that it is tough at this end of the market,” he said, “but this is still an important sale for Queensland.

“It is Queensland's bread and butter sale and it was good to see participation from all around the state.

“We had good interstate and international interest as well - Hong Kong buyers bought 10 horses; it was a really good cross section of buyers with no one person or group dominating.

“We got the clearance rate up to 75 per cent which I think is a pass mark.”
