Alabama Express has left a significant mark with his debut crop of runners, securing a Group 3 win with Karavas, along with two stakes placegetters in Poster Girl and Express Yo’Self, and an emphatic victory in the $1 million Golden Gift with Shangri La Express.

This remarkable feat propelled him to prominence, becoming the first new-season sire to surpass $1 million in progeny earnings before Christmas, sparking discussions among breeders about his exceptional performance in the first-season sire ranks.

At the half-way mark of the 2023/24 season and with 12 starters, the young sire has produced five individual stakes performers, achieving an unmatched strike rate of 42 per cent stakes horses to runners.

With statistics reminiscent of his illustrious sire Redoute’s Choice at a comparable stage of their careers, Alabama Express is emerging as one of the most promising young sires in Australia.

At a similar point in his career, Redoute's Choice had sired 16 starters, producing two stakes winners and six stakes horses with his most notable being his champion sire son Not A Single Doubt.

With a stakes winners to runners rate of 12 per cent, Redoute’s Choice was performing slightly better than Alabama Express (8 per cent) in regards to black-type winners. The eventual Champion First-Season sire posted slightly lower stakes horses to runners (38 per cent) figures compared to Alabama Express (42 per cent) at the same point in time.

Comparing him to other successful sons of Redoute’s Choice at a similar stage in their careers, Alabama Express continues to stand out for his exceptional stakes horses to runners. This includes outperforming Champion sires Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt who boosted seven per cent and zero per cent stakes horses to runners respectively.

Statistically, Alabama Express bears close resemblance to Beneteau, who emerged as one of Australia's most promising young sires before his untimely passing after siring just two crops. Intriguingly, Alabama Express shares a lineage connection with Beneteau, as both descend from Encosta De Lago mares. Despite his brief time at stud, Beneteau managed to produce two stakes winners and two additional stakes performers from 19 runners (21 per cent) at a similar stage in his career.

Another compelling comparison is with Arrowfield Stud’s The Autumn Sun, who, despite having fewer opportunities with just six runners, still managed to produce two stakes horses (33 per cent) at the same point in his career. This includes the talented Autumn Ballet, who secured victory in the G3 Black Opal S. at her racetrack debut. These parallels highlight Alabama Express's promising potential as a young sire, drawing similarities to other successful descendants of the great Redoute’s Choice.

The future looks bright

If his current statistics are anything to go by, the future looks bright for Alabama Express. In comparison to some of Australia’s leading young stallions, Alabama Express continues to post promising results across the board.

While Newgate Farm’s Capitalist made an impressive start to his career siring 10 stakes horses, it's important to note that he had substantially more opportunities (35 starters, 165 foals) than Alabama Express (12 starters, 114 foals) did at the same point of his career.

Exceptional sire Extreme Choice, a grandson of Redoute’s Choice, continues to uphold the highest stakes winners to runners ratio among all Southern Hemisphere sires. Based on stakes horses to runners off his small numbers to date, Alabama Express is delivering at a higher strike rate than Extreme Choice, who achieved 20 per cent stakes horses to runners at the same early point of his career.

It's worth highlighting that Alabama Express began his stud career with a notably lower stud fee compared to other prominent young Australian sires. Starting at a fee of $27,500 (inc GST), Alabama Express stod for almost half the launch fee of Capitalist, who commenced at $55,000 (inc GST).

Shaping as a leading sire of the future, buyers can expect a strong presence of Alabama Express stock at the Adelaide Yearling Sale, with offerings from Yulong Stud (11), Erinvale Thoroughbreds (3), and Oakford Thoroughbred Farm (1). The majority of his yearlings will be offered by Yulong Stud, with notable successes like Karavas and Shangri La Express originating from the same farm.

Additionally, four of Yulong Stud’s offerings come from Street Cry (Ire) mares, aligning them with the successful breeding of the stakes-performed filly Express Yo’Self.
