At A Glance

Four yearlings broke the million-dollar barrier on day one of the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, led by Lot 227 who made $2.2million to the bid of James Harron Bloodstock near the end of the day. The Zoustar filly from Group 1 winner Prompt Response was sold by Widden Stud.

The first day of selling showed improvements in both the average and median on 2023, however, the clearance rate was down from 85 per cent in 2023 to 74 per cent in 2024.

Vendors gained on 2023 with the average price rising to $390,091 (up from $389,605 for day one in 2023), while the median on the first day rose to $300,000 (up from $280,000).

With less lots sold on day one of 2024 compared to 2023, the gross for the first session was down at $63,975,000 for 164 lots sold. In 2023, the first day had 177 lots sell for a gross of $68,960,000.

The leading buyer by gross on the first day was Tom Magnier, who picked up three yearlings for $2.68million, while two buying groups each purchased six yearlings apiece with KPW Bloodstock buying six yearlings for an aggregate spend of $2.24million and the Chris Waller/Guy Mulcaster team purchased six yearlings for a total of $1.99million.

Coolmore Stud was the leading vendor on the first day selling 16 yearlings for $7.255 million, including Lot 68, a Snitzel filly from Hips Don’t Lie who made $1.1million to be the fourth top lot of the day.

With the top two lots, it was no surprise to see Zoustar as the leading stallion on day one with 13 yearlings sold for $9.79million (average $753,000), although Champion Sire I Am Invincible was close behind with 16 yearlings sold for $9.2million (average $577,500).

Wootton Bassett (GB) leads the first season sires after the first day with 11 lots sold for $3.5million, while G1 Golden Slipper winner Farnan is the leading first season sire by average (more than one lot sold) with 6 lots averaging $427,500.

#1 Zoustar dominates Day 1 leaderboard

Widden Stud’s Zoustar was the dominant force at the top end of the market on the opening day of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, being responsible for four of the top six lots.

This was highlighted late in the session when James Harron Bloodstock went to $2.2 million for Widden’s filly from the Group 1 winning mare Prompt Response (Beneteau).

It gave Zoustar the two top lots after Tom Magnier bid $1.9 million earlier in the day for Segenhoe’s colt from Fundamentalist (Not A Single Doubt).

Widden’s Antony Thompson admitted there was something special about seeing Zoustar’s progeny so keenly sought after.

“As a studmaster, you are rusted on to your stallions. You have to show enormous belief when you buy them, when you breed to them, when you support them,” Thompson said.

“To see that belief be really vindicated in the way it has been, it is enormously satisfying.

“That’s up there as one of the highest priced fillies we’ve sold and one of our top lots. Very exciting and pretty cool.”

Harron described the daughter of Prompt Response as “a very special filly” and tipped the pedigree page would only continue to blossom over the next decade, given the way the mare has been bred since retiring to stud.

“Zoustar is absolutely flying and his fillies are doing an outstanding job. She was the standout in the sale for us and very happy to get her,” he said.

James Harron

Zoustar also had fillies from Formality (Fastnet Rock) and Invictus Salute (Exceed And Excel) make $950,000 during the session.

His 13 sold on Day 1 made $9,795,000 at an average of $753,462, making him the leading sire by both aggregate and average.

“It’s been a good day. He’s had a great year and has had great sales right around the grounds and great results on the track,” Thompson said. .

“It’s just continued here, with some great Zoustars, whether they’re colts or fillies, they’ve been selling really well. They are right in the eye of all the major buyers.”

#2 Hutch tips filly dominance to “balance out” on Day 2

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was comfortable with results from the opening session and tipped Monday’s second session to be stronger at the top of the market.

While the average and median figures held up similarly to last year, the fact only four horses made $1million or more was notable, given a total of 26 were knocked down at this sale last year.

“We had a day here two years ago where we sold six horses for $1million or more and the following day we sold 14,” Hutch said.

“It just ebbs and flows a bit. There are a lot of factors that go into a horse making a lot of money. Everything has to be perfect.

“I kind of look at it and say, did the median hold up to be a good figure? Yes. Did the average hold up to be a good figure? Yes. The clearance at the end of the day is going to be pretty consistent with what it was at the end of the day 12 months ago.

“We had a situation where Yulong spent $9.2million on this day 12 months ago, which is a significant factor in driving turnover in a sale and today we just had no dominant buyer.

“I kind of look at it and say, did the median hold up to be a good figure? Yes. Did the average hold up to be a good figure? Yes. The clearance at the end of the day is going to be pretty consistent with what it was at the end of the day 12 months ago.” - Sebastian Hutch

“Nobody pinned their colours to the mast the way Yulong did 12 months ago.”

Five of the top six lots were fillies on Sunday and the girls averaged significantly higher than the boys across the session, but Hutch said he believes “the equilibrium will balance out tomorrow”, even allowing for the headline Pierro x Winx (Street Cry {Ire}) filly.

“The reality is that for any of these yearlings to make proper money, everything has to be spot on,” he said.

“It just happened today with a few particular horses, a couple of things weren’t as perfect as buyers needed them to be and it just affected their willingness to really stretch.

“The reality is that for any of these yearlings to make proper money, everything has to be spot on.” - Sebastian Hutch

“I just get the feeling it will be a little bit more straightforward in respect to those horses tomorrow.”

Earlier Yarraman Park’s Arthur Mitchell hailed their I Am Invincible x Notting Hill (Pierro) filly as one of the nicest fillies he’s taken to a sale after she made $1.8million to the bid of Hilldene Farm.

“She ranks right up at the pointy end of other Vinny fillies we’ve sold. She’s gorgeous and has been from day one,” he said.

Hilldene Farm’s Nick Wakim said he had to stretch a little more than he’d hoped to secure the filly.

Nick Wakim

“Obviously Meuse was my filly which I raced. I sold her and she is probably the only one that I have sold where I thought, ‘did I make the right decision or the wrong decision?’ and this is a beautiful filly and an opportunity to get back into the family,” he said.

“She was a star, the best filly I’ve seen for a long time, as a matter of fact. The best filly on ground and probably one of the two best fillies I’ve seen ever, so the right family, right cross.

“She is a lovely filly and we are very happy to get her.”

Tom Magnier signed for the day’s highest priced colt, Segenhoe Stud’s Zoustar x Fundamentalist (Not A Single Doubt) colt, for $1.9million.

On Monday, Magnier will be in the spotlight as the vendor of the much-anticipated Pierro x Winx filly, who is due to sell mid-afternoon.

The Pierro filly has already been the subject of huge mainstream media exposure and Inglis is preparing for unprecedented public interest when she sells on Monday afternoon.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have the Winx horse here and we can’t wait,” Magnier said.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a complex anywhere in the world as busy as it was at 11.50 here (Sunday), so full credit to Inglis as well.”

#3 Murphys Salute with Zoustar filly

Royston and Treen Murphy were celebrating a personal best result on Sunday night after selling their Zoustar x Invictus Salute (Exceed And Excel) filly for $950,000.

The filly was knocked down to Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA).

“Over the years we’ve sold some high-priced yearlings for clients, but personally, that’s our highlight of our investment in the industry,” Royston said.

“It’s like if you can’t crack the million, people think you’re disappointed. I can tell you, at $950,000, I’m far from disappointed.”

Murphy said Invictus Salute was a mare they bought privately, who was able to perform for them on the racetrack and despite the temptation to sell, she’s remained a prized possession at Sledmere.

“At the time it was a big investment for us. We were getting going and up on our feet. We had always loved the family, most people do, so we decided to shell out, bought the mare, kept her with Mark Newnham and luckily we picked off a Listed race, which was great,” he said.

“We did think maybe we should cash her in and we were offered a fair bit of money for her, but we loved her so much and stood our ground and said ‘let’s just keep her and breed with her.’

“It’s been a long road and as everybody knows with breeding, it’s a long time since she was covered by Zoustar to get to today.

“She did have an I Am Invincible foal and unfortunately the foal died. So this was the second foal, as I said a long road, but we’ve always been excited about getting her here today and getting in front of people.”

Murphy said the filly was “built for speed” and he expects to see her race early in the new year.

“Murphy said the filly was “built for speed” and he expects to see her race early in the new year.”

Invictus Salute has a Home Affairs filly and is back in foal to I Am Invincible.

Sledmere had a productive opening session, selling seven lots for $2.96 million, to be among the top 10 vendors by (aggregate 7th and average, 9th).

“It’s a big investment these mares and it’s nice when it pays off,” Murphy said.

“We came here thinking we had a pretty nice draft and we’ve had a very good day.

“We came here thinking we had a pretty nice draft and we’ve had a very good day.” - Royston Murphy

“Credit to everyone on the team. People forget all the work that goes in, all for 10 days at the sale. It’s two years of hard work from everybody on the team and that goes from the guys who do the farming, the team in the office and all the crew out working with the horses.

“This is a great result for the whole farm.”

#4 Mills seeking more topline fillies

Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) had a busy day, signing for three of the top 20 lots in the session and then later a $400,000 in conjunction with Brae Sokolski’s Yes Bloodstock and Stallion Match.

“A few years ago I started to progress into that category of being able to go to a sale and buy the horse you want. The client support for me over the last five years has been unbelievable and thoroughly appreciated,” Mills said.

“I’m very lucky that a lot of those horses have been good racehorses and really repay the people who have supported me. That’s by far and away the most pleasing aspect of all this.”

“I’m very lucky that a lot of those horses have been good racehorses and really repay the people who have supported me. That’s by far and away the most pleasing aspect of all this.” - Sheamus Mills

Mills’ highest priced lot was the Zoustar x Formality filly, which he co-signed for with James Bester Bloodstock.

It was the first time Mills had bought with Bester.

“In this day and age you see so many horses knocked down to multiple names. So especially at something like the Easter Sale, you’re often trying to work out a little bit if you can team up with people and so on,” Mills said.

Sheamus Mills

“I was obviously pretty keen on the filly, then I found out that James was as well. So it worked out well. James’ client will take the vast majority of the horse and I will actually end up a minority partner.”

Mills said there had been no decision on who would train the Formality filly, but each of his other three purchases will be placed into the care of Mick Price and Mick Kent Junior.

“She’s a three-quarter-sister to Invader, so obviously that’s a family I’ve watched for a long time, tried to get into for a long time,” Mills said.

The first purchase was Lot 45, a Snitzel x Girandola (Medaglia D’Oro) from Lime Country for $650,000.

“I love Medaglia D’Oro as a broodmare sire – I’m really big on broodmare sires and Medaglia is in an elite, elite category. He’s as good as they get worldwide as a broodmare sire.

“I’ve had a lot of luck with Lime Country. I bought Gumdrops from them and also bought another filly last year by Fastnet Rock, who we really like.

Physically, in terms of handling the sale process, I thought she was probably just about the pick of them.”

Mills then gave the same amount for a Written Tycoon x Kooweerup (More Than Ready {USA}) filly from Yulong.

Lot 101 - Written Tycoon x Kooweerup (filly) | Image courtesy of Inglis

“That was one of my top picks and a filly I really wanted,” Mills said.

“We’ve had a lot of luck with Written Tycoon, with (Group 1 winner) Odeum and (Group 3 winner) Gumdrops and Vibrant Sun being out of a Written Tycoon mare.

“So he’s a stallion I’m always pretty hot on and she was probably my favourite Written Tycoon in the sale.”

“So he’s a stallion I’m always pretty hot on and she (Lot 101) was probably my favourite Written Tycoon in the sale.”

The final purchase was a Snitzel x Pass The Parcel (More Than Ready {USA}) filly from Aristia Park, which was purchased with Yes Bloodstock and Stallion Match.

“Brae Sokolski has been a mate of mine for close on 30 years. We used to attend many a venue back in the day, so I’ve known Brae for a long time.

“He’s got his own systems and thoughts and so do I. We bought one together this year at the Gold Coast and now this filly. It’s a good little partnership and I’m really happy with the way that one’s come together.”

#5 In Plain English – Ellis is Slipper dreaming

A day after the Te Akau honour roll was boosted by a new Group 1 2-year-old winner, Principal David Ellis had eyes on the biggest juvenile prize of them all when he secured Newhaven Park’s Snitzel-English (Encosta De Lago) colt for $700,000.

This is the second foal of English, who carved out a brilliant career in the Newhaven Park colours, winning twice at Group 1 level and three times in Group 2 races.

The Gai Waterhouse trained mare also counted a string of Group 1 placings among her achievements, one of those being second to Vancouver in the 2015 Golden Slipper.

Being by Snitzel, a two-times Slipper winning sire, Ellis sees the world’s richest juvenile race written all over the colt he bought on Sunday.

“I thought he was a Golden Slipper colt if ever I’d seen one. We were pretty keen to buy him and he was good buying at that money,” Ellis said.

“From the moment we saw him, our vets rated him very highly, it’s pretty exciting to go home with a colt like him.

“From the moment we saw him, our vets rated him very highly, it’s pretty exciting to go home with a colt like him.

“(He is) very much on type an early colt. He will be in our Cranbourne stable and we hope he’s the next top horse we have there.” - David Ellis

“Anything you get from Newhaven, one of the best farms in the world, is always exciting to have.”

On Saturday at Trentham, the Te Akau colours sailed to victory in the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce S. (1400m) courtesy of I Am Invincible colt Move To Strike.

“It’s just incredible the job Sam Burgerson and Mark Walker have done getting him from a colt that had a heart fibrillation at his previous start to win a Group 1 the way he did (on Saturday),” Ellis said.

“I’m just so proud of the job those two guys and all of our staff have done with him.

“To be I Am Invincible’s only Group 1 winning two-year-old is something that I’m very proud of.”

Ellis said Move To Strike would not campaign in Australia this season and most likely won’t be seen here until the autumn of next year, with the New Zealand 2000 Guineas his principal aim this spring.

Ellis and his Te Akau team were quick out of the blocks in the first session. One lot after buying the Snitzel x English colt, Ellis was able to secure a Frankel x Escapement (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) colt from the Yulong draft for $300,000.

“Frankel is one of the great sires in the world, so we thought at $300,000 he was good buying too,” Ellis said.

“We’re (here) to try and buy some good horses, try and get the next Imperatriz.”

Ellis was true to his word. Late in the session he went to $775,000 to buy Cressfield’s Snitzel filly from the dual Group 1 winning sprinter Pippie (Written Tycoon).

This is the first foal from the former John and Chris Meagher-trained speedster, who won the Oakleigh Plate and Moir Stakes at Group 1 level.

#6 Ora prominent on both sides of the ledger

Kia Ora Stud was at the pointy end of the high priced lots as both a vendor and buyer during the opening session on Sunday, selling a valuable Farnan filly, before paying seven figures for a filly from a family they know well.

The farm’s Farnan filly from US Grade 2 winner Gypsy Robin (USA) (Daaher {Can}) was keenly sought after, eventually falling to the combination of Newgate Bloodstock and the Ladbrokes Racing Club for $725,000.

The filly is a half-sister to Newgate’s Group 1 winning stallion Wild Ruler (Snitzel) and also to Kembla Grange Classic winner Pavitra (American Pharoah {USA}).

A short time later, Kia Ora’s Bloodstock and Breeding Manager Shane Wright held the call when the hammer fell on Coolmore’s Snitzel x Hips Don’t Lie (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}) filly at $1.1 million.

Farnan colts sold for $1.2 million and $800,000 at the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast in January, but this was the most expensive yearling filly by the stallion sold to this point.

Wright said it was very pleasing to see first crop progeny of their resident sire competing with proven stallions on the big stage.

Lot 68 - Snitzel x Hips Don't Lie (NZ) (filly) | Image courtesy of Inglis

“It was a great result. She went to Newgate and Ladbrokes and they are buying some very nice fillies,” Wright said.

“She was a very special filly and Farnan has been very well received and when you see prices like that for a first season sire and they’re up there competing with the big boys at Easter it’s great.”

Kia Ora also sold a Farnan x Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) for $600,000 to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott during the session.

Two years ago at this sale, Kia Ora gave $900,000 for Learning To Fly, a close relation to the Snitzel filly they secured in partnership with TFI on Sunday.

Shane Wright | Image courtesy of Inglis

“It’s the most amazing family and she’s a beautiful filly herself,” Wright said.

“She’s one that we marked in the catalogue before we came here. Obviously we bought Learning To Fly here a few years back and she’s been good to us, so it’s a family we know, it’s a family we love and right up there with the best families in Australia.

“She wasn’t cheap, but nothing in this family comes cheap and we were happy to pick her up.”

Wright said no decision had been made on a trainer for the filly at this point, but he expected to receive plenty of submissions. He indicated they would wait until the end of the sale before deciding on a trainer.

#7 Stewart warms up

John Stewart’s Resolute Bloodstock was an active player during the opening session, acquiring three lots for $1.32 million.

Bidding online from Lexington, Stewart struck early with the purchase of Rigmont’s I Am Invincible x Faith In Hand (Fastnet Rock) filly for $650,000.

He then added a Dundeel (NZ) x Game Of Thorns (Animal Kingdom {USA}) colt from Arrowfield’s draft for $240,000, before rounding out his online spree with a Lope De Vega (Ire) x Hint Of Pink (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) filly from Yarraman Park’s draft for $425,000.

“As you can see we are mainly focusing on fillies," said Stewart.

“We are a breed to race operation and we are really focusing on buying horses that we know have good bloodlines and that we want to be foundational for our breeding operation.

“Hip 16 was spotted by Chelsey when we were in Australia. She spent a day on a helicopter flying around to different farms to see as many horses as she could during our brief visit and had this one high on our list.

“It must have been “meant to be” because we were just coming off a big second place run for our colt that we have in partnership with Sheik Fahad of Qatar Racing, which solidified his spot in the Kentucky Derby as one of the top four contenders.

John Stewart | Image courtesy of Fasig Tipton

“We were having a little team celebration and lost our focus and when we logged into the sale they had already started the bidding for hip 16. I saw that she as on the list and bought her before the full team had even realized."

Stewart had flagged his intention to be buying at this sale and lived up to that promise on Sunday.

All of the purchases will remain in Australia. They will go to Coolmore, before a decision is made on who will train them.

Attention now turns to Stewart’s actions on Monday, having flagged on social media last week his intention to be a player in the race to secure the Pierro x Winx filly.

#8 Strong spread of buyers

Day 1 concluded with a total of 116 individual buyers, a figure almost identical to last year's sale at the same stage, which saw 117 buyers.

While the number of buyers remained stable, the absence of Yulong on day one indicates a wider distribution among buyers. Notably, Chris Waller Racing/Mulcaster Bloodstock and KPW Bloodstock (for Ron Wanless) emerged as the top purchasers, each acquiring six lots.

Geographically, the distribution of buyers has remained relatively consistent, with 12 unique locations represented on the buying sheet, compared to 14 at this point last year. Buyers from New South Wales unsurprisingly dominated, accounting for 66 individual purchases.

“Day 1 concluded with a total of 116 individual buyers, a figure almost identical to last year's sale at the same stage, which saw 117 buyers.”

Victorian buyers secured 46 yearlings, a decrease from last year's 69, however this can be attributed to the absence of Yulong's expenditures. Japanese investment decreased, with Katsumi Yoshida being the sole buyer on day 1; last year, four Japanese buyers collectively purchased six yearlings by this point in the sale.

Buyers from New Zealand demonstrated strength on day 1, acquiring 17 individual lots, a significant increase from the 10 yearlings purchased at the same stage last year. Notably, Dean Hawthorne and Te Akau Racing's David Ellis were prominent contributors, with Hawthorne signing for seven yearlings and Ellis for four.

Sale toppers: A day for the girls as four crack a million

14 min read
Big things are expected on day two of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, but Sunday’s opening session supplied plenty of action in its own right. Four seven-figure lots highlighted the hunger at the very top of the market, with the progeny of Widden Stud’s Zoustar proving in particularly high demand.

Lot 227 - Zoustar x Prompt Response (Beneteau), filly, $2,200,000

Zoustar’s popularity was not the only reason Widden Stud had to celebrate as Antony Thompson’s operation also sold the top lot, the filly out of Prompt Response (Beneteau), for a show-stopping $2,200,000. James Harron signed the ticket for the most expensive filly sold so far this year.

The youngster is the third foal out of Prompt Response, a daughter of Beneteau whose six wins were capped by victory in the Group 1 Tattersalls Tiara. She also registered three Group 2 successes in the Emancipation S., Breeders Classic and the Dane Ripper S.

“She’s a very, very special filly,” said Harron. “Zoustar is absolutely flying and his fillies are doing an outstanding job as well. She was the standout in the sale for us so I’m very happy to get her.

“We’ll get her back and talk about (training plans) because nothing has been set in stone at this stage. We’ll work that out, get her broken in and have a good look at her and see where the best place is to go with her.”

Harron continued: “She’s a great type, obviously. She’s beautiful, lovely quality, a fantastic temperament and has a very good action. She’s just a very special filly.

“She’s out of a very good racemare and the sister looks handy, she’s trialled up a few times and looks like she could quite easily attain some black type, which would be a nice update. The family’s been bred really nicely and it could be one of those pages we look back on in ten or 12 years’ time and it’s thickened right out.”

“She’s a great type, obviously. She’s beautiful, lovely quality, a fantastic temperament and has a very good action.” - James Harron

This is Prompt Response’s second successive seven-figure yearling as the I Am Invincible filly Harron referenced sold to Wexford Stables for $1.3 million at last year’s Easter Sale and is flagged by that stable as being particularly smart, preparing for her debut soon.

Zoustar, who sired four of the top six lots on the day, was continuing a fine run of form during the 2024 sales season having already been represented by three million-plus yearlings prior to Sunday’s session.

The upgraded esteem in which buyers hold the son of Northern Meteor is no surprise considering he has sired seven elite winners, three of whom have scored during the current campaign. That trio are Coolmore Stud Stakes scorer Ozzmosis, Joliestar, winner of the Schweppes Thousand Guineas, while Zougotcha was last seen landing the Coolmore Classic.

“When we bought mum she was an expensive mare but we’ve got a good group of core clients who back us on these expensive mares and it’s great to see our judgement vindicated and the belief they’ve shown in us rewarded,” said Thompson.

“Certainly from Zoustar’s point of view, because we took a big position there and have always had enormous belief, it’s very satisfying to see him doing what he’s doing. The way his progeny have sold today has been phenomenal.”

Reflecting on the session-topping transaction, Thompson added: “It doesn’t just happen. The team has done an incredible job and the filly presented beautifully all week. Everyone who saw her just loved her; you saw that around the ring with four or five serious teams playing well above the million mark.

“It was going to take someone with real belief and real conviction to buy her and obviously John Camilleri has that sort of trust in James and those guys know what they’re doing.”

Antony Thompson | Image courtesy of Inglis

“Hopefully they’ve set themselves up with a bit of a legacy with such a beautiful filly. As much as we had very high expectations, we are realistic. Once you get over that million mark you never really know where you’re going.”

Zoustar stood the most recent breeding season at a fee of $220,000.

Lot 42 - Zoustar x Fundamentalist (Not A Single Doubt), colt, $1,900,000

Tom Magnier was the first buyer to break the seven-figure barrier at this year’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale when the Coolmore man stretched to $1.9m for the Zoustar colt out of the high-performing Fundamentalist (Not A Single Doubt).

Offered by Segenhoe Stud, the youngster is the third foal out of the two-time winner, whose biggest victory came in the Listed Dequetteville S. Fundamentalist performed to an even higher level in defeat having reached the podium in no less than five Group 1 contests, most notably when runner-up to The Autumn Sun in the Randwick Guineas.

The mare also finished second to Nakeeta Jane (So You Think {NZ}) in the Surround S. and filled the same spot behind Amphitrite in the Thousand Guineas.

“He’s a lovely colt,” said Magnier. “He stood out in the Segenhoe draft this week. They always do a good job and Peter O’Brien (Segenhoe general manager) always reminds me of the horses that we leave behind out of Segenhoe so I wasn’t going to give him that opportunity today. He’s a lovely colt, a great mover and it’s family we all know. Chris (Waller) will train so fingers crossed.”

Expanding on the colt’s appeal, Magnier added: “He just floated around the sales complex. He’s obviously a big, strong horse with loads of quality and when you see the brand on the shoulder, it needs no introduction. The whole team liked him.”

The Zoustar-Not A Single Doubt cross has yielded seven winners from 12 runners, including the stakes scorers Schwarz (Zoustar) and Solar Star (Zoustar).

Fundamentalist herself fetched just $135,000 when purchased by Aquis Farm and Blue Sky Bloodstock at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale. She went on to earn over $700,000 in prize-money during her racing career before being passed in at $1m at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

Her first foal, an as yet unraced Zoustar colt, brought $560,000 from Ciaron Maher at the 2021 Gold Coast National Weanling Sale, while Yulong Investments went to $280,000 for her Written Tycoon colt presented at last year’s Easter Sale.

Co-breeder Wes Heritage was among those on hand to witness the seven-figure transaction, and the Gold Coast-based businessman reflected on the sale by saying: “Peter O’ Brien and all the Segenhoe team were pumping my tyres up telling me to expect a good day but I never dreamed it would be like this! It’s a fantastic result and I’m thrilled.”

As well as securing one of day one’s leading lots, Coolmore are selling a heavyweight draft over the two sessions. The consignment is headlined by the highly touted Pierro filly out of wondermare Winx (Street Cry {Ire}), who sells as Lot 391 on Monday.

When asked how that side of the sale was progressing, Magnier said: “The team at the farm have obviously done a great job. We went out with our partners a long time ago to find the best mares and this is the start of (their progeny) coming through. We’re extremely fortunate to have the Winx filly here and I think there’ll be some fireworks here tomorrow afternoon. We can’t wait.

“We’re (Coolmore) extremely fortunate to have the Winx filly here and I think there’ll be some fireworks here tomorrow afternoon. We can’t wait.” - Tom Magnier

“The Booker filly (Lot 443, by I Am Invincible) is going down very well, so is the Sunlight (brother, Lot 304), there’s a whole load of them there. Hopefully they all find good homes and all the top trainers are pleased with the draft.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a complex anywhere in the world as busy as it was at 11.50am here today, so full credit to Inglis.”

Lot 186 - I Am Invincible x Notting Hill, filly, $1,800,000

Nick Wakim of Victorian outfit Hilldene Farm made his presence felt when he secured the I Am Invincible filly out of Notting Hill (Taiki Shuttle {USA}), for $1.8million. The third top lot was offered by Yarraman Park Stud and is due to go into training with Ciaron Maher.

There is plenty of bold black type on the filly’s page as her dam is a sibling to nine winners, including the likes of Group 3 scorer Precious Lorraine (Dundeel {NZ}), now the dam of Listed winner Meuse (Snitzel), and the stakes winner Star Of Monsoon (Lonhro). Notting Hill’s dam, Monsoon Wedding (Danehill {USA}) is a sibling to breed-shaping sire Redoute’s Choice and fellow Group 1 winners Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) and Platinum Scissors (Danehill {USA}).

The filly is the third foal out of Notting Hill, who has already opened her account at paddocks thanks to the US-bred Maroon Bells (War Front) who won a maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park in 2022.

“Lovely filly, she was always a lovely filly and she was always going to sell well,” said Yarraman Park’s Arthur Mitchell.

“She was on the market at $200,000. She’s probably one of the nicest fillies in the sale. She ranks right up at the pointy end of the other ‘Vinny’ fillies we’ve sold. She’s gorgeous and has been from day one.”

“Lovely filly, she was always a lovely filly and she was always going to sell well.” - Arthur Mitchell

The filly’s price eclipsed the sum that her dam fetched when she was offered at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2016 as James Harron Bloodstock and De Burgh Equine combined at $1.4 million to secure the daughter of Pierro. Notting Hill last changed hands on the public market in 2019 when she was bought by Craig Bernick’s Glen Hill Farm for $700,000 at the Keeneland November Sale.

Lot 68 - Snitzel x Hips Don’t Lie (NZ) (Stravinsky), filly, $1,100,000

Coolmore turned vendor for the second lot to break into seven-figure territory as Kia Ora and Tony Fung Investments paid $1.1million for the Snitzel filly out of blue hen mare Hips Don’t Lie (Stravinsky {USA}). The dam was a high-class runner herself, winning the G2 Reisling S. during her time in training, and has proved even more talented at paddocks.

She has bred eight winners from as many foals to race and remarkably four of those, all by Fastnet Rock, have gained black type. Lake Geneva (Lomond) won the Listed Crockett S. and also ran third in Vancouver’s Golden Slipper, while Acrobat won a Randwick Listed contest in track-record time before retiring to the Coolmore stallion roster after that solitary start.

The famous family has been in the headlines in recent times thanks to Hips Don’t Lie’s Group 3-winning daughter Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock), who is the dam of last year’s leading juvenile filly Learning To Fly (Justify {USA}). The Kia Ora team already knows plenty about the pedigree as they signed for Learning To Fly at $900,000 during the 2022 Easter Sale.

Commenting on Sunday’s purchase, Kia Ora’s bloodstock and breeding manager Shane Wright said: “She looks very sharp, very early and she’s our style of a filly. The family is amazing; there’s an up-and-coming stallion in there and then it’s an amazing fillies family, so it’s just going to keep improving and improving over the years.

“She looks very sharp, very early and she’s our style of a filly. The family is amazing; there’s an up-and-coming stallion in there and then it’s an amazing fillies family, so it’s just going to keep improving and improving over the years.” - Shane Wright

“We’ve tried to buy one or two out of the pedigree before, obviously we got Learning To Fly, so we’re very happy to have a second member of the family. We don’t usually decide on trainers for fillies this early, we’ll wait until the end of the sale and see what the portfolio brings.”

The result means that Hips Don’t Lie has now been responsible for five million dollar-plus Easter yearlings. Lake Geneva fetched $1million from Hawkes Racing in 2014, Aquanita Racing gave the same sum for Irish Sea (Fastnet Rock) in 2015 while Sia (Fastnet Rock) cost Jadeskye Racing and Nordic Breeding & Racing $1.1million a further 12 months on. Her most expensive yearling to date is Humming (I Am Invincible) who was bought by Sheamus Mills for $1.95million in 2021.

Hips Don’t Lie’s daughters have understandably become extremely valuable broodmare prospects and the 2022 Chairman’s Sale saw Hilldene Farm and James Bester combine at $1.6m to secure Sia.

Bester knows more about Hips Don’t Lie than most as the agent unearthed the daughter of Stravinsky for NZ$200,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale back in 2007.

Lot 37 - Zoustar x Formality filly, $950,000

A sensational session of selling for Widden Stud kingpin Zoustar kicked off when Sheamus Mills and James Bester combined at $950,000 for the filly out of Formality (Fastnet Rock).

Another from the Coolmore consignment, the filly’s dam won two Group 2 prizes during her time on the track, namely the Furious S. and the Silver Shadow S., beating Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) for the former success and seeing off Alizee (Sepoy) in for the latter.

Lot 37 - Zoustar x Formality (filly) | Image courtesy of Inglis

In turn, Formality is out of Jolie's Shinju (Jpn), a daughter of the Halo stallion Jolie’s Halo who was crowned Horse of The Year in Singapore in 2009.

Formality has fielded one winner from as many runners at stud, with the Justify colt Javaja winning two from two for trainer Stuart Kendrick in the colours of Kia Ora and TFI last season. Javaja also fetched $950,000 when offered by Coolmore at the 2022 edition of the Easter Sale.

This was Mills’ first purchase in conjunction with Bester, and the agent explained how the pair came together. “I was pretty keen on the filly,” he said. “In this day and age you see so many horses knocked down to multiple names, so, especially at something like the Easter Sale, you’re often trying to work out if you can team up with other people.

Sheamus Mills | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“I was obviously pretty keen on the filly, then I found out that James was as well so it worked out well. James’s client will take the vast majority of the horse and I will actually end up a minority partner.”

Mills said that no decision had been reached over who will train the filly.

Lot 82 - Zoustar x Invictus Salute, filly $950,000

Another Zoustar filly fetched $950,000 later in the session when Andrew Williams signed for the first living foal of Listed scorer Invictus Salute (Exceed And Excel). Offered by Catriona and Royston Murphy’s Sledmere Stud, the dam recorded the biggest of her six racecourse victories in the Listed Starlight S.

Invictus Salute’s profile is underpinned not only by performance but pedigree too as she is a half-sister to the dual Group 2 winner Splintex (Snitzel). In turn, the siblings are out of Acquired (NZ), an O’Reilly half-sister to the aforementioned blue hen Hips Don’t Lie.

Lot 82 - Zoustar x Invictus Salute (filly) | Image courtesy of Inglis

“She looks like she’s built for speed,” said Royston Murphy. “I suppose the most exciting part of breeding is that you look forward to what is to come and we believe she will be running early next year.

“The mare has a cracking Home Affairs filly at home, which we would rate nearly the best foal on the farm, if not the best foal. We stepped up again and went back to I Am Invincible so she’s back in foal again. We hope the future is bright for her.”

Lot 26 - Bivouac x Femme Fireball (Pierro) filly, $140,000

Buyer: Bennett Racing

Vendor: Vinery Stud

“She’s a classy filly. A lovely mover with a beautiful loose action, and a great hip and girth on her. She just ticked all our boxes,” said Nathan Bennett.

“The Maher team loved her as well and she’ll go to Ciaron Maher. As an ownership group, we used to follow the dam who was a very good racemare, and we like Bivouac. He was obviously a champion and we think he’ll make it as a sire.

Lot 26 - Bivouac x Femme Fireball (Pierro) (filly) | Image courtesy of Inglis

“Pierro looks like he’ll be a good broodmare sire as well, so really ticked all the boxes. Just a lovely filly that we really liked with a bit of residual value too. We can’t wait to get her into our system and go from there.”

By first season sire Bivouac who has been quite popular this yearling sale season with sales up to $675,000, Lot 26 is the second foal of Femme Fireball (Pierro). Her first foal is a 2-year-old filly named Femminile (Dundeel {NZ}) who was purchased at this sale last year from Vinery Stud for $150,000 by Phillip Stokes Racing and Rick Connolly Bloodstock.

Femme Fireball was a tough racemare for trainer Robert Heathcott, winning seven races, including three of her first four starts as a 3-year-old. She also won three in succession when resuming as a 4-year-old, and was placed in the Listed Just Now S.

Femme Fireball is a full sister to dual Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed Rock (Pierro), and both are out of a winning Fastnet Rock mare.

Imperatriz headed home for a spell

Ten-time Group 1 winner Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) is heading home to New Zealand for a spell with her spring options as yet undecided. “We’ll have everything open. … It just depends on what sort of deal we get offered,” Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis said, referring to The Everest.

“She’s come through really well. She’s on the flight home tomorrow. We’re very proud of her and watching the replay again this morning, she didn’t have much luck. … The horse that’s rate the second best in the world and the best sprinter in the world and we’re just so proud to have been able to buy her.”

Imperatriz’s fourth placing in the G1 TJ Smith S. took her record to 19 wins and four placings from 27 starts with earnings over $6.9million.

Bold Bastille aimed at Showdown

Team Hayes will aim their 2-year-old filly Bold Bastille (Brazen Beau) at the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush at Bendigo on Saturday which will be followed by the $1 million The Showdown at Caulfield two weeks later. “We wanted to keep her away from the wet, but there's also great prize money on offer, so there was no reason to head to Sydney with The Showdown in our sights,” Will Hayes said.

“We can't fault her, and she's risen to every challenge we've given her. She has that electric turn of foot, so we've never held her up. We've always wanted to see that speed, so we've picked out the races that we've placed her in so far.”

Bold Bastille has won three of her four starts, all at Listed level, with earnings over $540,000.

Lady Of Camelot heads to Percy Sykes

After being scratched from the G1 Sires’ Produce S. due to the rainfall, G1 Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) will head to the G2 Percy Sykes S. instead. “She'll run in the Percy Sykes,” co-trainer Adrian Bott told Racingandsports.com.au.

“A testing 1400-metres, we just felt she has done enough this preparation, we didn't want to do anything wrong by her. She's too valuable. We obviously had to make the call at that stage prior to seeing the conditions on the day but it was probably a bit easier to make with a race like the Percy Sykes just around the corner for her as well.”

Geelong Cup winner heads to Sydney Cup

Trainer Phillip Stokes will bring his stayer Amade (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) north for the G1 Sydney Cup on Saturday. “He's going really well, he's ready to go,” Stokes told Racing.com.

Amade ran fourth in the G2 Adelaide Cup at his last start, a strong effort after jockey Zac Spain lost his irons early in the race.

Skybird to resume with Sangster aims

Trainer Mitch Freedman will run his 3-year-old filly Skybird (Exosphere) on Saturday in preparation for a South Australian campaign. “She’ll have to carry a bit of weight at Bendigo, but it’s really a buildup run to get her to Adelaide second-up in either the Euclase or the Sangster, that’s what we’re thinking with her at the moment,” Freedman told Racing.com.

Skybird won her first three starts in succession in the spring including the G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic, before running third in the G1 One Thousand Guineas. She hasn’t raced since. An Inglis Classic graduate from the HP Thoroughbreds draft, she was purchased by Mitch Freedman Racing for $110,000.

The point score is determined on a 3-2-1 basis* across the eagerly anticipated 10 Group races as well as the Finals of the Country and Provincial Championships, with the winner announced at the completion of Day 2 of The Championships (Saturday 13 April).

Lucky Sweynesse wins Sprint Cup

Multiple Group 1 winner Lucky Sweynesse (NZ) (Sweynesse) hadn’t won since the G1 Hong Kong Sprint in December 2023, with both his starts this autumn being ordinary by his standards, but he overcame doubts to win the G2 Sprint Cup on Sunday evening.

He now has 16 wins from 23 starts.

New juvenile winner for The Mission

Alva Star wins Madison

Dale Ladner's 4-year-old mare Alva Starr (Lord Nelson) won the G1 Madison S. on Saturday. A homebred for her owner, she is the first Group 1 winner for her dam whose four foals to race are all stakes winners.

In 2011 Ladner paid US$30,000 (AU$) for a first-crop filly from the first crop of Into Mischief at the Breeders' Sales Company of Louisiana's September Yearling Sale. Named Sittin At the Bar, she would go on to win 11 of 19 starts–nine in stakes company–and over $700,000 while under the care of Brett Brinkman. As a broodmare, her first foal is Listed winner Club Car (USA) (Malibu Moon {USA}), her second foal is Listed winner Jack The Umpire (USA) (Bodemeister {USA}), her third foal is Group 2 winner Cilla (USA) (California Chrome {USA}) and Alva Star is her fourth foal.

Resilience into Kentucky Derby

3-year-old colt Resilience (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}) is into the G1 Kentucky Derby after winning a dramatic G2 Wood Memorial S. at Aqueduct on Saturday. “My father's (Marty Wygod) dedication and love for the thoroughbred industry has spanned multiple years and Resilience is the product of a broodmare line he has nurtured and it is so exciting to see him succeed at this level,” part-owner Emily Bushnell told TDN.

The race was marred by a spill in the stretch when the Uriah St Lewis owned/trained-longshot Deposition (USA) (Constitution {USA}) appeared to clip heels while racing in traffic and fell. Deposition stood up under his own power and walked onto the equine ambulance and was transported to the Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists clinic for further evaluation. Jockey Dexter Haddock was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Gimme A Nother unbeaten with second Group 1

A decision to sidestep a possible SA Triple Tiara crown for the G1 Empress Club S. paid off as 3-year-old filly Gimme A Nother (SAF) (Gimmethegreenlight) stayed unbeaten. The daughter of Champion Sire Gimmethegreenlight, a son of More Than Ready, has now won all her seven starts including the G1 South African Fillies Classic.

“I went positive from her draw and with the sticky going I didn’t want to be too far back. She went through her gears and won well,” jockey JP van der Merwe told sportingpost.co.za
