Eneeza denies Lady

In a gripping rendition of the G2 Percy Sykes S., Victorian contender Eneeza (Exceed And Excel) delivered a stunning performance by besting the G1 Golden Slipper winner, Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon).

Eneeza placed in the G3 Ottawa S., on debut, followed by an impressive victory in the Listed Merson Cooper S. Returning for an autumn campaign, she was placed in the G3 Chairman’s S., behind the G1 Golden Slipper runner-up, Coleman (Pierata). Subsequently, Eneeza finished fourth in the G1 Blue Diamond S. and seventh in the G1 Golden Slipper, where Lady Of Camelot emerged victorious.

Trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, who later celebrated Group 1 success with Autumn Angel (The Autumn Angel), Eneeza, guided by Damian Lane, fended off Lady Of Camelot. While Erno’s Cube (Rubick) clinched third place, with El Morzillo (Star Witness) from Queensland followed in fourth.

Reflecting on Eneeza's performance to Sky Racing, co-trainer Peter Moody expressed admiration, stating, “Eneeza has been terrific. She’s not a big filly but she’s unbelievably resilient. Her constitution and the way she handles racing has been phenomenal. I don’t think I’ve trained a tougher 2-year-old.”

“Eneeza has been terrific. She’s not a big filly but she’s unbelievably resilient. Her constitution and the way she handles racing has been phenomenal. I don’t think I’ve trained a tougher 2-year-old.” - Peter Moody

Moody continued, addressing Eneeza's unluckiness in the Golden Slipper, “Eneeza didn’t have a lot of luck in the Golden Slipper, as did several others. You could make a case she was unlucky not to win. She will be spelled now. Can she improve? That is arguable.”

Eneeza is the third foal from the talented Sweet Sherry (Bel Esprit), a victress of the G2 Euclase S. and two Listed races. Notably, Eneeza's half-brother, sired by I Am Invincible, fetched $775,000 at the recent Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, purchased by China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock, and Trilogy.

Eneeza herself commanded attention as a yearling, being a $1.1 million acquisition by Kia Ora Stud and TFI from the draft of Silverdale Farm at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Broadsiding sizzles in the Fernhill

The James Cummings-trained Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}) showcased his prowess over 1600 metres in the Listed Fernhill H. at Randwick on Saturday.

Champion Jockey James McDonald took the reins on Broadsiding for his fourth start, replacing Jamie Kah, who guided the 2-year-old colt to a third-place finish in the G3 TL Baillieu H. last start behind Linebacker (NZ) (Super Seth).

Broadsiding demonstrated determination, manovuring out of a tight spot to surge ahead. He triumphed by an official margin of 2.15l over El Castello (Castelvecchio), who held on tenaciously, with Just Party (Justify {USA}) finishing third.

Speaking to Sky Racing, James Cummings expressed his satisfaction, saying, “Broadsiding certainly relished the mile today (Saturday). He's a very interesting colt, being a son of Too Darn Hot, and he's Too Darn Hot's first stakes winner in Australia. Broadsiding showed real conviction in his victory."

“It's no surprise that he handled the mile well, considering Too Darn Hot's triumph in the Sussex S. We'll contemplate backing him up in the G1 Champagne S. next Saturday. If he's in good form and eats well, that's the direction we'll take.”

Winning jockey McDonald echoed Cummings' sentiments, stating, “Broadsiding is a colt on the rise, and I have no doubt he'll handle the quick turnaround”.

The daughter of Headwater was bred by Hall Of Fame Bloodstock and is the fourth foal from the Choisir mare Jester Jewel. Pure Aqua was passed in for $50,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale when offered by Twin Hills Stud. Additionally, she was withdrawn from the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Pure Aqua is raced by a group that includes R R Jolly, Hellbent Racing and Triple-G Racing.

Nucleozor caps Te Akau Racing double

Te Akau Racing trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson continued their impressive streak with juveniles in New Zealand on Saturday as Nucleozor (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) and Star Shadow (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) claimed victories.

Nucleozor maintained his perfect record and secured his first stakes win in the Listed Welcome S. at Riccarton Park. The Almanzor (Fr) colt has been flawless in three starts so far, showcasing his dominance with Warren Kennedy aboard, winning by 4.3l over stablemate Discretion Rules (Alabama Express), with Lil Zena (NZ) (U S Navy Flag {USA}) finishing third.

This marked Te Akau Racing’s ninth victory in the Listed Welcome S. first winning it in 2002. Nucleozor is the ninth Southern Hemisphere stakes winner for Almanzor, who shuttles to Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.

Nucleozor is from the Burgundy (NZ) mare Nucleonic (NZ) and is a full brother to Qali Al Farrasha (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}), who placed in the G1 New Zealand Oaks. Bred and raced by Te Akau in partnership with Westonlea Bloodstock, Nucleozor continues to showcase his promise.

Meanwhile, at Otaki, Walker and Bergerson debuted Star Shadow (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}). Guided by Wiremu Pinn, Star Shadow narrowly secured victory in the 1300-metre maiden, defeating Ballon d’Or (NZ) (U S Navy Flag {USA}) and Brilliant Battle (NZ) (War Decree {USA}).
