In Her Eyes leaps into G1 Champagne

It’s a big step from a maiden into a Group 1 but with only eight nominations for Saturday's G1 Champagne S., trainers Leon and Troy Corstens are taking a punt with 2-year-old filly In Her Eyes (Star Witness).

“That's natural progression, isn't it - win a maiden, straight to a Group 1?” Troy Corstens told Racing.com.

“I was sitting there on Monday morning looking at the noms and I just thought it might be a little bit down in numbers. At this stage I think we're going to accept and at the very least have a good look at it.”

n Her Eyes is a winner from four starts and is currently at $51 with the TAB.

Super Smink ready for The Quokka

Trainer Daniel Morton will apply blinkers to 3-year-old filly Super Smink (Super One) for Saturday’s The Quokka.

“Chris (Parnham) has had it mind for a while that blinkers might assist her,” Morton told The Races WA.

Super Smink missed the G3 Roma Cup two weeks ago due to an elevated temperature. “She’s got a real asset fresh and I didn’t want to take that away from her. She missed no work and is further advanced going into this than she was first up last prep I feel and looking at her she is bang on.”

Bella Nipotina aims to best last year’s The Quokka third

Third in last year’s The Quokka, Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) is ready to go better this year.

“I think she's got that feeling of timing and presence about her, she's been so competitive every run that she's had this preparation, she hasn't run a bad race,” jockey Craig Williams told Racing.com.

“Last time in Sydney in the TJ, there's not many times when you hold off Imperatriz or I Wish I Win and you're not winning the race, but she was really good.

“She did also get conditions that she relishes, bit more softer footing for her. It doesn't mean that she needs softer ground, but I think she does have a sense of timing going into The Quokka on Saturday.”

Bella Nipotina has won seven of her 47 starts and over $6 million, including the 2022 G1 Manikato S.

“That will be it for him and it will be the same for Khadime as she will also complete her campaign in Adelaide and come back for the spring.” Feroce has won both his starts, while Khadime has won her only start.

Jimmysstar freshened before Stradbroke campaign

Jimmysstar (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) will run at Randwick on Saturday as the first step on his G1 Stradbroke H. campaign.

“He looks fantastic and I think he's in a good spot. This is just a ratings race and if he goes well, he'll have another chance at stakes level in Brisbane. There's a Group 3 race up there that would get him there (into the Stradbroke field) but of course, he'd have to do everything right to get in.”

Jimmysstar was a winner of two from three starts in New Zealand before transferring to the Maher stable where he won his first three starts for the trainer. He then ran second in a Listed race before fading in his most recent start.

Antino set for Queensland Group 1 carnival

Tony Gollan will set his 5-year-old gelding Antino (NZ) (Redwood {GB}) for the G1 Stradbroke H. Antino trialled earlier this week. Racing Queensland asked several racing participants on Tuesday: Name a Queensland horse that will win a Group 1 during the upcoming carnival and why? And Antino was a popular answer.

“He is probably the Queensland horse to follow during the winter carnival,” fellow trainer David Vandyke said.

“He was unlucky to not win the Toorak and is with a good trainer in Gollan. He is a smart horse with nine wins from 14 starts.”

“It’s a Saturday or Sunday and your friends invite you to a function and you can’t go, my son Grayson has moved back to Tassie, my grand-daughter is here now, she’s six, she had her first soccer game the other day and I couldn’t go,” White told Tasracing.com.au.

White was inducted into the Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame in 2009.

Noverre full brother to debut on Wednesday

Clarkson launches syndicate named after his own beer

Former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson has launched a racehorse ownership syndicate with a horse named after his own beer brand. “I said to the Hawkstone team that we should get into racing but clearly they got motor racing and horseracing confused!” Clarkson told Racingpost.com.

“That said, Ben Pauling is a stone’s throw from Diddly Squat Farm and the Hawkstone Brewery, so I know where my hay is going. Furthermore, the Pauling family originally farmed our land and taught Kaleb (Cooper, who appears on Clarkson's Farm) all he knows about farming.”

To be trained by Ben Pauling, 4-year-old The Hawkstonian (Ire) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) was purchased for €45,000 (AU$74,500) at the 2023 Goffs Arkle Sale.

G3 Prix Sigy goes to Sajir

Chantilly's G3 Prix Sigy on Tuesday was won by 3-year-old colt Sajir (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}).

“We ran out of a few options of where to start him and ended up here at 5.5 furlongs,” said Price Faisal’s racing manager Ted Voute.

“He got seven furlongs last year, but maybe the (French) Guineas is a step too far. The seven-furlong G3 Jersey is good and you've also got the six-furlong Group 1 (Commonweath Cup) at Royal Ascot. That might be a bit tough and it's a matter of deciding how far he can go at this point, but I'll leave that to Prince Faisal and Andre (Fabre).”

Sajir has won three of his five starts.

Judge to rule of Zedan lawsuit this week

The lawsuit filed against Churchill Downs, Inc. by Amr Zedan's incorporated racing stable to try and get Bob Baffert-trained horses un-barred from the G1 Kentucky Derby could get decided by the end of this week according to several published news reports in the wake of a Monday hearing in Kentucky's Jefferson Circuit Court.

“He knew back in July of last year that if he kept Mr. Baffert as his trainer then his horses would not be eligible,” Matt Hegarty of Daily Racing Form quoted lawyer for CDI, Thomas Dupree saying, “Each time, he decided to stick with Mr. Baffert, knowing the consequences of his decision, and he now regrets that decision.”
