Exceedance | Standing at Vinery

The Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained Karavas looked to have the G3 David Coles AM S. in her keeping. However, Flyer from the Mornington-based stable of Jason Warren continued to find under a well-timed Craig Williams ride. Finishing in third was The Dabble Effect, a daughter of another first-season sire Zousain.

Warren told Racing.com, “We put Flyer to the side this preparation, but she’s just kept soldering on. She was put in the deep end in her second start in the G1 Blue Diamond.

“We came to South Australia to try and get some black type with her being a filly and she showed up today (Saturday) and has won a nice race.”

It was a good day for Rosemont Stud colour bearers with Guerite (Shamus Award) scoring earlier on Saturday at Donald. Flyer, bred by Rosemont Stud and Brett Charman was an impressive winner at Sandown-Lakeside on debut and then was unplaced in the G1 Blue Diamond S.

Flyer returned to run third in the G3 Breeders’ S. before Saturday’s success. She is the second foal from the four-time winner Miss Toorak Flyer (Toorak Toff). Her first foal, Treasurway (Starspangledbanner) won the G3 Breeders’ S. in South Australia and was placed in several other stakes contests. Miss Toorak Flyer has a yearling colt by the pensioned Exceed And Excel and foaled a colt by Shamus Award in August before visiting Starspangledbanner in the spring.

The filly is the second stakes winner for the G1 Coolmore Stud S. victor Exceedance and one of his four individual winners. Exceedance is available at a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

Another stakes winner for Tycoon

The Chris Waller-trained colt, carrying the bottle green silks of Yulong responded to riding from James McDonald to keep his nose in front of a charging Silva ‘N’ Suave (D’Argento) and Gin And Tonic (Better Than Ready).

Representing Chris Waller Racing was Brett Killion, who told Sky Racing post-race, “Lovely colt. He’s very laid back, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from him but we put the blinkers on.

“Althoff put himself in the race, travelled great but I’m just not sure if he got lost a bit in the front or got tired late. However, he did enough.

“Althoff put himself in the race, travelled great but I’m just not sure if he got lost a bit in the front or got tired late. However, he did enough.” - Brett Killion

“Providing Althoff pulls up well, I’d say we would head to the Sires’ and I think the 1400 metres would be suitable.”

Althoff, having his second start, is the sixth foal from St Miss Tropez (Magnus). Five of her six foals to race have been winners, including the Group 3-placed Scheelite (Real Steel {Jpn}).

St Miss Tropez has a yearling filly by Maurice (Jpn) and visited Admire Mars (Jpn) last spring. She is closely related to the classy Don’t Doubt Mamma (Not A Single Doubt), a multiple Group 2 winner and the Listed-winning 2-year-old Risen From Doubt, a full brother to Don’t Doubt Mamma.

Nine for Too Darn Hot

Darley’s shuttler Too Darn Hot (GB) sired his ninth winner from his debut Southern Hemisphere crop when his son Tropicus stormed to success at Caulfield.

The Kia Ora-owned colt, trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, showed tenacity under Daniel Moor to hold off the race-experienced Stormbourg (Strasbourg) and Just For Show (Showtime).

Co-trainer Sam Freedman told Racing.com, “I think the most pleasing part of Tropicus’ victory today (Saturday) was he spat the bridle out at about the 500 metres and then really picked up and chased the line.

“One thing he’s always shown us is he’s got way more off the bridle than he has on it: often it’s the opposite. Tropicus was challenged late, and he really had to dig into his reserves and was strong on the line.”

“Tropicus was challenged late, and he really had to dig into his reserves and was strong on the line.” - Sam Freedman

Speaking of future engagements for the colt, Freedman said, “It’s never easy to win in town on debut but we’re mindful he’s a colt going places with a very bright future. The spring comes up pretty quickly and we’ve got to look after him. There’s every chance we will put him away and aim for the G1 Coolmore Stud S. in the spring.”

The colt was bred by D Kelly and J Kelly and Kia Ora Stud, who has retained Tropicus and races him under Kia Ora Stud W S. Tropicus is the third colt from the Group 3-placed Exceed And Excel mare Extensible, she is a full sister to the Listed winner Cathay Lady and a half-sister to My Sugar (Deep Field), a Group 3 placegetter and the Listed winner Cutadeel (Dundeel {NZ}).

“We expected him to run well today (Saturday). We weren’t sure whether Pisces would handle the conditions, but you have to find out. He’s a nice little horse heading the right way and does everything right.”

Pisces is the seventh foal from the Redoute’s Choice mare Pleiades, who won three races and was placed in the G3 Belle of the Turf. She is a full sister to Glissade, who is the dam of the G1 The Thousand Guineas victress Flit (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}).

Team Hawkes won the Listed Takeover Target H. at Newcastle on Saturday with 4-year-old gelding Semillion (Shalaa {Ire}). He hadn’t won since his 2-year-old season where he won the R. Listed Inglis Banner on debut and also the G3 Kindergarten S. at his fourth start.

Since then he had 13 starts without winning although he placed on four occasions, including a second last start in the VOBIS Gold Sprint. All up, he has three wins and five placings from 18 starts with earnings over $740,000. Sold by Blue Gum Farm at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale for $300,000 to International Thoroughbred Solutions, Semillion is out of a city winning full sister to Listed winner Iconic (Bel Esprit).

The win also was part of a treble for jockey Zac Lloyd, who also won on Pisces (Frosted {USA}), and Scarlet Oak (Kermadec {NZ}).

Hezashocka thrives in wet to win Gold Cup

A trip north to chase the rain paid off for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr when 5-year-old gelding Hezashocka (NZ) (Shocking) won the Listed Gosford Gold Cup, run at Newcastle on Saturday.

“He's a horse that, the more rain the better, so when we were sitting in the pub last night having a beer and talking about the races and the Newcastle trots got abandoned, we were pretty confident that we were going to get the track that we wanted,” stable representative Ben Elam said.

Hezashocka took his record to four wins from 30 starts and he was previously a Group 2 winner as a 3-year-old in New Zealand.

Kiwi filly on Oaks pathway

Trainer Chris Waller might consider the G1 Queensland Oaks for strong Saturday winner Scarlet Oak (Kermadec {NZ}) who won the fifth race at Newcastle by 2.8l. “I'd say she has booked a trip up to Queensland,” stable representative Damien Fitton said.

“Leave it to Chris, but she is probably on an Oaks path,” Scarlet Oak won on debut in New Zealand in March and then transferred to Waller where she ran second in the G3 James HB Carr S. before Saturday’s win.

At Witz End becomes Epaulette’s 21st stakes winner

Trainer Daniel Bowen was thrilled with the win of 7-year-old gelding At Witz End (Epaulette) in Saturday’s Listed Australian Turf Club Trophy. “Amazing. I'm shaking. He's just a special old horse,” said Bowen.

“I was going to run him in the Chief De Beers and then there's the Hinkler then maybe the Ramornie. And then someone in The Kosciuszko, give us a go.”

At Witz End now has 13 wins and 17 placings from 62 starts with earnings over $520,000. The win gave Epaulette his 21st stakes winner as a sire.

Jockey Jamie Kah had a stakes double at Morphettville on Saturday, winning the G1 Goodwood H. as well as the G3 Proud Miss S. on Boognish (Sooboog) for trainers Will Clarken and Nikki O’Shea. “She deserved to get her black type win, obviously it's come on a big day, we really stepped off her for a while after she didn't find the line over 1500 (metres), applied a huge amount of pressure this week and really screwed her down for today and it paid off,” said Clarken.

Boognish took her record to three wins from 12 starts. She was sold as a November yearling by Element Hill at an Inglis Digital Sale for $25,000 to Edinburgh Park who took her to the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale where she sold for $180,000 to Will Clarken/Suman Hedge (FBAA)/David Jolly.

Trainer Jake Stephens’s 6-year-old mare En Francais (Puissance De Lune {Ire}) only made the G3 Cummings S. field after a couple of scratchings, and the punters rated her a $17 chance, but none of that mattered when she won by 1.4l. “That was exciting,” said Stephens.

“We left it up to Lachie (Neindorf) and he's pulled it off, which is great.” En Francais took her record to five wins from 20 starts and it was her first black type success. She becomes the fourth stakes winner for her sire.

Champion apprentice jockey Celine Gaudray will miss most of May after copping another careless riding suspension at Caulfield on Saturday. She was suspended for eight meetings on a careless riding charge for her ride aboard Papillon Club (Toronado {Ire}) who finished in 7th. Stewards claimed that near the 700-metre mark, Gaudray's mount caused interference to Farhh Flung (GB) (Farhh {GB}), who bled and will spell for three months.

Gaudray's suspension is to be served after one she received from the Warrnambool Cup nine days earlier.

"She is a very quick filly, wants quick ground and five (furlongs). Namur ready for Sunday’s G1 Victoria Mile

Namur (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) faces only 14 foes in the G1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo on Sunday, a “Win And You're In” qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar in November.

“Finishing second in the Dubai Turf was frustrating, but the race itself reminded me of her high potential and sense of presence. Her performance left no room for complaint whatsoever,” said trainer Tomokazu Takano.

“I could feel from early on that this horse had a lot to offer, and everything has happened as I'd anticipated–the way she gains strength, the good condition when she goes into a race, thinking that if she would run at her own rhythm, she would be highly competitive in a Group 1.

Repole paid US$475,000 (AU$717,000) for Unlimited Budget (USA) (Street Sense {USA}) at the 2012 OBS March Sale and she went on to earn over US$$758,000 (AU$1.18million) and was purchased by Shadai for US$1.3 million (AU$1.9million) at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Good crowd for Arqana Breeze Up Sale

With the Arqana Breeze Up Sale taking place on Saturday in France (Saturday overnight AEST), vendors are cautious but excited. “The market is tight but if you get it right it can be very good. They all seem to be landing on the same horses. If you have a horse with a pedigree and he qualifies for the main men, it's very good trade,” said Eddie O'Leary.

UK trainer forced to close yard due to canola crops

Trainer Jane Williams has closed her stable for a month due to poor performances believed to be caused by the effects of rapeseed oil (canola) crops in a neighbouring farm.

“It's a respiratory thing, it's an allergy and it's a huge irritant. It's quite potent and I think it just inflames their lungs,” Williams told racingpost.com. "The stuff has been in flower for four or five weeks now and you can smell it in the yard. … Our horses usually finish their races off but there's been a few strange performances. Jupiter Allen was a real shocker – we thought he was going to win. One minute he was in command and then you're thinking what's happened here.”

Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Sunday a couple of two-year-olds are looking for maiden success. A daughter of Dundeel (NZ) makes her debut at Mudgee and a very well-bred Snitzel colt is looking to break through on the Sunshine Coast Poly Track.

The well-bred Unleeshing, is set to make her debut over 1100 metres for Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker at Mudgee on Sunday. In preparation she looked smart, winning her trial nicely at Rosehill over 1030 metres on May 2.

This promising filly is by Arrowfield Stud’s classy stallion in Dundeel (NZ), who has had another outstanding season leaving the Group 1 winning colts Celestial Legend and Militarize (NZ).

Dundeel (NZ) | Standing at Arrowfield Stud

Unleeshing is the fifth foal from Eleesha (Encosta De Lago). She was unraced on the track but has already made a mark as a broodmare having left the talented New Zealand filly Imelda Mary (NZ) (Ferlax {NZ}) she was successful in the G2 Sir Tristram Fillies C., and the G2 Royal S.

Eleesha has also left the Group 3 placed filly Mountain Guest (Tarzino {NZ}) and the winner Murrajong Road (NZ) (Sweynesse).

Further back in the family is the top class filly Fashions Afield (Redoute’s Choice) who was a six-time winner including the G1 Flight S., and the G1 Sires’ Produce S., as well as placing in a plethora of black-type events. She has also been a good producer leaving five-winners with the best of them being Kiss And Make Up who was successful in the G2 Todman S.

Eleesha since producing Unleeshing has left a yearling filly by Toronado (Ire) and was most recently served by Toronado again last spring.

Unleeshing was purchased by MyRacehorse/Bjorn Baker Racing/Clarke Bloodstock/Belmont Bloodstock at the 2023 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Blue Gum Farm for $80,000

His dam Cocoa Doll is a half-sister to G2 Percy Sykes S. and R.
