It’s backwards for bacon: Nocab making a splash

7 min read
There was a new player on the scene at last week's Inglis broodmare sales - Nocab Racing making their mark firstly at the Chairman's with the purchase for $450,000 of Rocket Science (Ire) (Fastnet Rock) and the next day for $175,000 of Shihonka (Capitalist).

So who is Nocab Racing? Well it's backwards for Bacon - the Brisbane couple Steve and Tina Bacon who, after a lifetime of background interest in racing and eight years of ownership, have taken the plunge into the heady world of thoroughbred breeding.

Steve's grandfather was raised close to Deagon racecourse in a racing family; trainers and jockeys amongst his relations. Whilst Steve was growing up there was always racing on the radio though his parents waited until their kids were older to get into ownership.

“And I replicated that,” Steve said - “once I had a bit more time and the finances.”

It was a trip to the Melbourne Cup and a visit to the popular yearly function held on the day after the Derby at the Flemington stables of Waterhouse and Bott that saw the Bacons put their hand up for their first horse.

Tina and Steve Bacon

It wasn't the purpose of the day, there were no plans to buy a horse but everyone knows how persuasive an enthusiastic trainer (yes, we mean Gai!) can be and “the next thing we knew we had a share in a horse!”

Beginner's luck

It was a definite case of beginner's luck with that first horse being the very handy Embracer (Sebring) - winner of seven races including the Listed Gold Rush at Hawkesbury.

Enjoying racing horses with Steve's parents Geoff and Jan, the Bacons were even luckier next time around, cheering to a G2 Golden Pendant victory the smart mare Vangelic (Vancouver) who upon her retirement last year was sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale to Tom Magnier for $1.5 million.

From those two early successes the enthusiasm for ownership has flourished, the Bacons now involved in “forty to fifty” horses with Waterhouse and Bott as well as Tony Gollan.

It was their involvement with Waterhouse and Bott that led the Bacons to teaming up with Bruce Slade whose idea for a syndicate focusing on fillies appealed to them.

Named the Valerie Partnership in honour of Gai's late mother (racing in her favourite colour - aqua), the group enjoyed instant success with its first three purchases Platinum Jubilee (Zoustar), Sicilian (I Am Invincible) and Taormina (Written Tycoon) all displaying talent.

A debut winner of the G3 Gimcrack S., Platinum Jubilee - who was also second in the RL Magic Millions - has had her value increased with the deeds of her half-sisters Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) and Queen Of The Ball (I Am Invincible) whilst the stakes placed Sicilian hails from the same family as She's Extreme (Extreme Choice) who sold for $3.4 million at the Chairman's.

Both fillies (Lots 513 and 540) go under the hammer at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale and the next group of the Valerie Partnership fillies are also displaying ability - including the Queensland carnival bound last start winner Toque (Street Boss {USA}).

Fillies and strategies

It was whilst listening to Bruce Slade discussions regarding his strategies with these fillies and their long term value as broodmares that the Bacons started to think about breeding.

And so, half way through last year, they made the decision to become breeders; establishing a plan to buy a couple of mares in Sydney, another couple at the Magic Millions and another two next year.

“The idea is to get up to about ten mares within three to five years,” Steve said.

At the moment the mares are being purchased - on the advice of Bruce Slade - with two stallions in mind; Ozzmosis who they bought a share in, and Storm Boy (Justify {USA}) in whom they are already part owners.

That RL Magic Millions win came to be part of the Nocab Racing portfolio more by chance than planning - “we don't race many colts, preferring to concentrate on the fillies and we did originally say no to Storm Boy,” Steve recalled.

“I wasn't really interested in him,” he admitted, “and I still have the emails where I kept saying ‘no’!"

“But they were having trouble selling him and when he was very close to trialling they asked me to consider to taking one of the last shares so they could get him named.”

“I said ‘yeah ok - but you owe me!’”

Nocab mares to call Ridgmont home

The next path on the road to breeding horses was to find a place to foal down and rear and after a visit to Ridgmont in the Hunter Valley the decision was made.

“We already had a connection - and a rapport - with the Cunninghams as they are also in Storm Boy and we have been so impressed with the amazing job they have done with Ridgmont over the last couple of years.”

It was at the Chairman's that Nocab Racing signed for a foundation broodmare - the imported Rocket Science ticking the boxes in regard to performance, pedigree and suitability firstly for Ozzmosis and maybe later down the track for Storm Boy.

“She was a good buy for us for those reasons but we also have that connection to Justify being Storm Boy's sire, and she is in foal to him - and of course he will be a scarcity in the future.”

The next day they were back in action securing Shihonka, a mare they already had a connection with - racing her along with Steve's parents to a couple of metropolitan victories and a Group 3 second in the Vo Rogue Plate.

Fitting the criteria

“Having raced her is a bonus,” Steve said - adding that they also named her (“it is Japanese for capitalism”).

“But the main reason to buy her was that she also fit all of our criteria. Adrian (Bott) had a massive opinion of her speed. She was stakes placed at two and three and a city winner and she fit within our budget. She was unlucky not to have won at stakes race and that would've made her a much more expensive mare.”

It has been a fast learning experience for the family and a passion they are able to share, their children also interested - especially their youngest son Liam who has been working part-time (whilst finishing his university degree) at the Tony Gollan stables, getting ready for a breeding season stint at Newgate this year.

“He then hopes to get over to the UK and Ireland and get as much experience as he can,” Steve said - “he is very passionate about it.”

“But the main reason to buy her (Shihonka) was that she also fit all of our criteria. Adrian (Bott) had a massive opinion of her speed. She was stakes placed at two and three and a city winner and she fit within our budget.” - Steve Bacon

Meanwhile Steve is already thinking what selling his own horses will be like.

“I will be extremely nervous! When you are buying you may have a list of 20 horses you like but but when you are selling you can't just turn the page and find the next one!”

A keen student of all things racing and breeding, Steve is self taught though happily lapping up advice - “Adrian and Bruce must be getting sick of my phone calls!” he laughed, adding that whilst Tina is not so interested in the logistics (“though she may become so down the track”) she loves the horses, attending the studs, sales and races.

Liam, Tina, Steve and Isaac Bacon

And he knows there is much more to take in - “I envisage that in this game ten, twenty, thirty years on you are still learning,” he said.

Speedy Godolphin horse Ingratiating heads to Oakland Park

6 min read
In the latest first season sire announcement, Godolphin's well performed Ingratiating is set to join Shooting To Win and Sessions on the Oakland Park roster at North Jindong in Western Australia.

Retiring to stud as the winner of just under $2 million in stakes, the handsome Ingratiating is a timely addition to the Oakland Park roster with the stud currently racing the exciting 2-year-old Bustling by the same sire - Frosted (USA). Ingratiating will stand for an introductory service fee of $9,000 (inc GST).

Racing in the Duncan family yellow and black Maltese cross silks made famous by their superstar galloper Northerly (Serheed {USA}), Bustling has won four of his first five starts.

The horse Neville Duncan describes as 'a cruisy character from day one' has given nothing else a chance with dominant on-pace victories in the Listed Perth S., the G2 Karrakatta Plate and the G3 Western Australian Sires Produce S. at his last three outings.

“Because of him, we know what Frosted is capable of,” Duncan said, excited to have welcomed Ingratiating to his new home a few weeks ago.

And delighted with how well - and how quickly - the 5-year-old settled in.

All gentlemen

“Godolphin's horses are handled by experts on a daily basis,” he said, “so they're all gentlemen - it makes our job very easy.”

As “a major Lonhro fan,” Duncan is happy to see a lot of that late champion in Ingratiating whose dam Obsequious was a member of Lonhro's third crop.

And a talented mare she was too, striking winning form at just her second start as a 2-year-old before a game second splitting Military Rose (General Nediym) and Solar Charged (Charge Forward) in the G2 Reisling S.

Continuing to race in the best of company at three, she added to her resume the G3 San Domenico S. defeating Solar Charged, Decision Time (Foreplay) and Spirit Of Boom and the G2 Light Fingers S. from Red Tracer (Dane Shadow).

Obsequious took her good form to stud where she has done a great job with five winners from her six first runners - and there is more to come, the attractive mare with a look of her sire served last spring by Bivouac with her yearling being a full brother to Ingratiating.

Also dam of the dual city winner Deference (Exceed And Excel) and the promising last start winning 3-year-old Elvis (also by Frosted), Obsequious is one of the four winners produced by Sycophant (Commands) who raced just the once - creating a big impression.

Weaving through the field before racing away to a three length victory at her one and only start at Kensington, Sycophant (who is also still at stud) is one of the six winners for the five times winner (from 13 starts) Shand (Quest For Fame {GB}).

A winning family

And so this is a running - and a winning family - and Ingratiating also showed that he really knew how to find the line with his five wins and nine placings from 25 starts.

Successful at his 2-year-old debut in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial down the famed Flemington straight, Ingratiating had an easy length on his rivals. Tackling Group 3 contests at his next two starts, he was a game second on both occasions before a dominant win as favourite in the Listed Talindert S.

Turning into the straight in front in the G1 Blue Diamond S., Ingratiating was run down late - splitting two very smart ones indeed; Artorius and Anamoe.

Not having the best of luck heading up to Sydney, Ingratiating still ran exceptionally well - good to the line finishing on the heels of the placegetters in the G3 Pago Pago S. and an eye-catching third having got too far back from a wide gate in the G1 Golden Slipper S. quinellaed by Stay Inside and Anamoe.

That was seven starts at two - two wins and four placings. And he took no harm from that busy juvenile season, at his 3-year-old debut charging home to take out the G3 Vain S. at Caulfield.

Shortly after tried against the older horses, Ingratiating was again in the thick of things finishing third to Jonker and Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) in the G1 Manikato S. And he was still in good form the following spring, winning a Caulfield handicap with 4.5kg more than his nearest rival before a G2 Schillaci S. second to Paulele.

Longevity and toughness

There was still more to come for Ingratiating who last winter in his final campaign was able to win the G3 Bletchingly S. at Caulfield.

It was that longevity and toughness that appealed to Neville Duncan, as well as his outstanding 2-year-old form - placings in Melbourne and Sydney's majors.

“To front up in both of those races and finish in the placings was a great effort,” he said, noting that had Ingratiating won either he would not be heading to Western Australia.

“It was that longevity and toughness that appealed to Neville Duncan, as well as his outstanding 2-year-old form - placings in Melbourne and Sydney's majors.”

Describing Ingratiating as “the best performed Australian bred 2-year-old to retire to stud in Western Australia,” Duncan said that he is “a handsome 16 hand stallion who was well regarded by his trainer and riders.”

“I always had a lot of time for him,” Damien Oliver reported - “he was a bit more precocious than Anamoe but there was little between them.”

“It is a rare feat for a colt to run in both our prestigious 2-year-old sprints,” James Cummings said - “but he had the class and could coil up and zoom to the line.”

“He furnished into a pretty classy animal and colts like Ingratiating with his style and physique are hard to find,” he continued.

“He thrived on training and had that glint in his eye that indicated he knew when it was race day.”

Duncan could not be more impressed with Ingratiating on type - “he has a great hindquarter, massive forearms and good leg,” he enthused.

“Ingratiating will stand for an introductory service fee of $9,000 (inc GST).”

A member of the Tapit (USA) (three times US Champion Sire of 31 Group 1 winners and 132 other stakes winners) branch of the Seattle Slew (USA) sire line, Ingratiating is one of his triple Group 1 winning sire Frosted's 27 stakes winners.

Lustre Lodge poised for more magic results

Fresh from achieving record-breaking sales at the recent Inglis Weanling Sale, Lustre Lodge is brimming with optimism as they gear up for the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Weanling Sale.

At last week’s Inglis Weanling Sale, Lustre Lodge made waves by selling the highest-priced weanling of the second day—a Toronado (Ire) colt out of the mare Atomic Pulse (Deep Field).

Listed as Lot 318, the colt attracted significant attention and spirited bidding, ultimately fetching $320,000 to the bid of M Patel and secured Lustre Lodge's position as the third-highest vendor of the sale by average.

Reflecting on this achievement, Paige Belsham, Operations Manager of Lustre Lodge expressed her delight of the sale, emphasising the exceptional qualities of the colt.

“It was obviously a great result for the farm. He’s a lovely style of colt, quite forward and by a stallion that's doing such a great job here and overseas. The price wasn’t necessarily unexpected as I knew there was always going to be so much interest in him”.

In addition to the Toronado colt, Lustre Lodge presented Lot 270, an All Too Hard colt from Warragamba (Medaglia d’Oro {USA}) who fetched a healthy $90,000 to the bid of Woburn Farm, NZ.

“The All Too Hard colt was a fabulous result for the team. He’s a colt that's just come on in leaps and bounds.

“By a proven sire, he was a horse with a beautiful action and a great attitude. New Zealand buyers were really interested in him as a trade horse and he fit that mould perfectly”.

Weanlings set for Magics debut

Looking ahead, Lustre Lodge is set to showcase two promising fillies at the upcoming Magic Millions National Weanling Sale. These fillies, presented under the Attunga Stud banner, have been carefully selected to suit the Magic Millions sale. One of the fillies, sired by Capitalist, boasts a speedy pedigree, while the other, by Snitzel, is the first foal from the stakes-performed mare Just Field (Deep Field).

“We’ve got a really good relationship with Brian and Anna Nutt of Attunga Stud who do a brilliant job. If we are selling just a couple of horses at Magic Millions it is easier for us to consign under our friends at Attunga rather than taking two horses all the way up there ourselves.

“We selected two weanlings that we thought would be really good fillies to take to the market up there, one being the Capitalist filly from Royal Schilling and the other being the Snitzel filly from Just Field”.

“We selected two weanlings that we thought would be really good fillies to take to the market up there, one being the Capitalist filly (Lot 261) from Royal Schilling and the other being the Snitzel filly (Lot 139) from Just Field”. - Paige Belsham

Lot 139, the Snitzel filly is the first foal from Lustre Lodge’s stakes performed Just Field who was a $650,000 yearling purchase by China Horse Club / Alan Bell Racing. She is from a highly-commercial family being the three-quarter-sister to the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (C&G), High Octane (Deep Field) and Belsham anticipates plenty of interest given her exceptional qualities and pedigree.

“Pete Colley co-owner of Lustre Lodge and Louis Le Metayer of Astute Bloodstock found Just Field at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale a couple of years ago. We continued to race her on and claimed a little bit of black-type. Being a get back and run on kind of horse, things didn’t always go her favour all of the time but she had huge ability and she's a beautiful style of horse.

“This Snitzel filly is a credit to the mare, she’s just a beautiful type. When you buy those quality types of mares, they do reward you with types like this.

Paige Belsham

“I think she's probably more of an end-user style of filly. She's a very impressive style with a really commercial pedigree that has plenty of upside, especially with High Octane who was a very impressive 2-year-old this season who should do the same in his 3-year-old season”.

The other weanling set to be offered by Lustre Lodge under the Attunga Stud banner is Lot 261, a filly by Capitalist and out of the well-related Artie Schiller (USA) mare Royal Schilling. A winner herself, she is from the family of stakes winners Fire In The Night (Danewin), Hooked (Casino Prince) and impressive last start Listed Bendigo Guineas winning 3-year-old, War Machine (NZ) (Harry Angel {Ire}).

Belsham envisions plenty of interest for this filly, emphasising her early maturity and commercial appeal.

“Belsham envisions plenty of interest for this filly (Lot 261), emphasising her early maturity and commercial appeal.”

“The Royal Schilling filly is very typical of Capitalist being a strong, forward type. If an end-user brought her that would be great, but if she was picked up by a pin-hooker, I could see her back at Magic Millions in January being such an early style of horse.”

Success on and off-the-track

Experienced in presenting top-quality weanlings, Lustre Lodge previously offered the talented multiple stakes winner Brave Mead (Brave Smash {Jpn}) as a weanling. Acquired by Ciaron Maher for $90,000 from a mid-year Inglis Digital Weanling sale, Brave Mead showcased immense potential in his brief but illustrious 12-start career, tragically cut short last month.

Securing juvenile stakes success in the Listed Valley Pearl S., Brave Mead went on to achieve dual stakes victories as a 3-year-old in the G3 Manfred S. and Listed Darby Munro S. Owned by Australian Bloodstock, the colt was on course for the G2 Arrowfield Stud S. before a devastating accident during routine exercise.

Furthermore, Lustre Lodge boasts representation in the form of the G2 Gilgai S. winner Star Patrol (Starsplangledbanner), who was sold in their 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale draft for $78,000 to P Ma. Within just a year, Lustre Lodge achieved another significant sale, with Economics (Capitalist) fetching $260,000 at the Magic Millions National Yearling sale. This lightly raced 4-year-old has since proven to be a talented stakes-winning sprinter.

Despite its modest size, Lustre Lodge consistently produces high-quality bloodstock year after year. Situated in Alison on the Central Coast of New South Wales, the team maintains a select group of broodmares alongside those from Greenhaven Park, owned by one of Lustre Lodge's part-owners, Pete Colley.

“Between Lustre Lodge and Greenhaven Park, we’ve got a really nice broodmare band. We’ve got around 33 mares on the farm at the moment”.

“Between Lustre Lodge and Greenhaven Park, we’ve got a really nice broodmare band. We’ve got around 33 mares on the farm at the moment”. - Paige Belsham

Highlighting their top mares, Belsham mentions, “Our headline horse would be Sweet Deal. She’s in foal to Extreme Choice so we're patiently awaiting the arrival of her foal in a couple of months." Additionally, she notes, “The other is the dam of Big Parade, being Crystal Rock, who is in foal to Toronado. Across the board, we've got some really nice mares with some good pregnancies that we're excited for”.

Multiple Group winner Sweet Deal (Casino Prince) was acquired by Lustre Lodge for $850,000 at the 2021 Inglis Chairman's Sale. Her first foal is a yearling colt by Zoustar, while she has a weanling colt on the ground by Written Tycoon. Crystal Rock's (Fastnet Rock) colt by Star Turn fetched $240,000 at this year's Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the highest-priced yearling of Lustre Lodge's seven horse draft.

‘A really strong line up of commercial stallions represented’ - NZB releases 150 Weanling Sale Catalogue

Written by Caitlin Smith

New Zealand Bloodstock released its 2024 National Weanling Sale catalogue on Monday. With 150 lots set to go under the hammer on Thursday, June 20, The Thoroughbred Report caught up with New Zealand Bloodstock's Sales Manager Kane Jones ahead of the release.

This year has once again seen outstanding achievements by New Zealand-bred stock, with 'Kiwi Breds' contributing nearly 12 per cent of Australia's stakes races, including eight at Group 1 level. From the remarkable Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars) who clinched four Group 1 wins this season, to Orchestral's (NZ) (Savabeel) triumph in the G1 Vinery Stud S., New Zealand remains synonymous for producing quality bloodstock.

In it's new standalone format, New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling Sale offers a prime opportunity for both pinhookers and end-users to acquire top-tier stock, backed by a proven track record of on-track success and lucrative investment returns.

The 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling catalogue produced Pingin (NZ) (Staphanos {Jpn}), a NZ$15,000 purchase who later won the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce S., while Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin {Jpn}) winner of the (RL) Karaka Million 2YO was bought for just NZ$50,000.

Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) was secured for a mere NZ$5,000 in 2017. She went on to achieve remarkable success, clinching the G1 New Zealand Oaks and G2 Eight Carat Classic titles, ultimately earning the title of New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year for the 2019/2020 season.

Similarly, the accomplished Callsign Mav (NZ) (Altante) was acquired for just NZ$3000 from the 2017 catalogue before claiming multiple top-flight victories, including the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. in Australia, as well as the G1 Tarzino Trophy and the G1 Windsor Park Plate in his birth country.

Jones is particularly excited to showcase the market a strong group of weanlings by highly-commercial sires. “The strength of our stallions both proven and emerging in New Zealand is exceptional and there is a really strong lineup of weanlings by commercial stallions in this year's catalogue”.

Gallery: The New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling Sale has produced some remarkable racehorses

Among this year's quality offering, buyers will have the opportunity to secure young-stock from established sires such as Proisir (9), Savabeel (1), Almanzor (4), Per Incanto (3), Sweynesse (5), and Shocking (3).

The catalogue also features progeny from up-and-coming sires including Super Seth (3), Ace High (3), Ardrossan (4), Satono Aladdin (8), U S Navy Flag (1), Hello Youmzain (2), Circus Maximus (3), and King of Comedy (5). Additionally, first-season sires such as Sword of State (12), Noverre (4), Armory (3), The Chosen One (2), St Mark’s Basilica (1), and Wooded (1) are represented.

On the dams’ side, the catalogue boasts progeny from 15 stakes-performing mares and 20 siblings to stakes-performers. Notable pedigrees include names like Coeur Volante (NZ) (Proisir), Holymanz (NZ) (Almanzor), Honorable Spirit (Charm Spirit), Pudding (NZ) (Tavistock), and Whimsical (NZ) (Savabeel). While it is a smaller weanling catalogue than previous editions (183 down to 150), Jones highlights that the catalogue boasts quality over quantity.

Kane Jones | Image courtesy of New Zealand Bloodstock

“It’s probably a reflection of the decline in the foal crop and a prevalence in online sales as well, but a slightly smaller catalogue certainly means a high quality catalogue".

With a quality lineup set for sale, Jones expects strong interest from both international and domestic pin-hookers.

“I fully expect the pinhookers to be really active at the sale. There is still a real demand for quality weanlings and quality horses across the board and having visited Australia recently there is good interest in our sale, and I know there's plenty of internationals' that have got the sale on their radar”.

“I fully expect the pinhookers to be really active at the sale. There is still a real demand for quality weanlings and quality horses across the board... I know there's plenty of internationals' that have got the sale on their radar”. - Kane Jones

“While there has been a number of successful pin-hooks from the sale, the obvious recent one is the Per Incanto colt out of She's Apples who sold for NZ$150,000 at this sale last year and then made NZ$500,000 at Karaka earlier this year".

In a further boost for buyers, Jones emphasises that pinhookers and end-users alike can buy with confidence particularly as all weanlings offered are eligible to be nominated for New Zealand Bloodstock’s lucrative Karaka Millions Series. Graduates can compete for a share in the NZ$1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), followed by the NZ$1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m) as well as the new $1m Mega Maiden Series comprising of 40 non-Saturday maiden races located throughout New Zealand.

“Obviously these weanlings are eligible to be entered in the Karaka Millions Series, so that’s a huge incentive in itself.

“We've seen New Zealand Bloodstock’s Karaka Millions series really go from strength to strength. We noticed a substantial increase in nominations from Karaka this year and we really expect that momentum to carry on going forward".

Weanlings entered in the Sale will be available for inspections at the on-farm parades and on-site at Karaka Sales Centre, with New Zealand Bloodstock agents available to inspect on behalf of buyers.

Benedetta heads north for more Group 1 options

Trainer Jason Warren has confirmed Benedetta (Hellbent) will have a crack at the $3m Stradbroke. “What a thrill for her to tick off that Group 1 winning box on Saturday and it was certainly a Jamie Kah masterclass,” Warren told Racing.com.

“The mare has pulled up in great order and the plan is to travel her back home either Monday night or if not some time on Tuesday. I didn’t want to have her standing on a float on Sunday for 10 hours or so and just wanted to allow her some extra time to get over Saturday’s run.

“The plan will be to get her up to Brisbane in a week or so and ideally I would love to find her a box at Eagle Farm. I would love to find her a travelling companion and it maybe Gawnski depending on how he runs this Saturday at Flemington.”

Coco Sun to spell and aim for Caulfield Cup

Trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy will send their G1 South Australian Derby winner Coco Sun (The Autumn Sun) for a spell rather than to the Brisbane Carnival, and will aim her at a G1 Caulfield Cup campaign during the spring.

Eneeza heads to new Magic Millions National 2YO Classic

This year will see the inaugural running of the $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic. Originally slated to take place at the Gold Coast, the race has now been relocated to Doomben on May 25. Trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman will send 2-year-old filly Eneeza (Exceed And Excel) north for the race.

“She was one of four horses to work up there this morning,” Moody told Racing.com. “We had I Wish I Win, Chain Of Lightning and Autumn Angel work, as well as Eneeza, and I'm happy with them all.”

Eneeza won the G2 Percy Sykes S. at her most recent start and has a record of three wins from six starts with earnings over $1.1million.

No confirmed runners for The Everest

For the first time in The Everest’s short history, there are no confirmed runners for the 2024 edition five months out from the race. “I'm not really surprised there isn't a horse locked in for The Everest yet, the slot-holders still have plenty of time,” Joseph Pride told Racenet.com.au.

The Everest | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“We see this every few years where there is a bit of a changing of the guard in the sprinting ranks. I'm confident both of my horses, Private Eye and Think About It, will be there again this year but I understand why slot-holders haven't picked them up yet.

“If Think About It goes to Queensland and does what I think he will do then I feel we will have a deal done pretty quickly for him.”

Bruce Sherwin appointed Interim NZTR Senior Handicapper

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has appointed Bruce Sherwin on a fixed term 3-month contract to fill this vacancy effective May 13. NZTR have spent two months searching for a suitable candidate to replace Neil Jennings as NZTR’s Senior Handicapper.

Sherwin has overseen NZTR's Handicapping Complaints process since 2013 and has been an integral member of the NZTR Handicapping Review Committee since 2014, assuming the chairmanship in 2022. In 2015, Sherwin was appointed to the New Zealand Pattern Committee, and from 2022, he has served as New Zealand's representative to the Asian Pattern Committee.

The NZTR Board has granted Sherwin a leave of absence from the Board to undertake the role of Handicapper, and no horses that he has ownership in will race during this time.

Andrew Ramsden S. for Frankel mare

Robbie Griffiths will send last start winner 4-year-old mare Let’sbefrankbaby (Frankel {GB}) to the Listed Andrew Ramsden S., a race which comes with a ballot-free entry to the G1 Melbourne Cup. “She came through the run super. She was fourth up on Saturday and she ticked all the boxes on Saturday. We were very happy with her,” Griffiths told Racing.com.

“We don’t think it will be a problem. Her mum won over 3000m. We always thought staying would be her strength. That’s what we liked about Caulfield as she showed her staying attributes. It would be great if she was lucky enough to sneak her way into the big one. Whatever happens she’ll be ideally suited in the staying races in the spring.”

Last Saturday's G3 The Cummings winner En Francais added to Magic Millons National Broodmare Sale

Trainer Jake Stephens confirmed that 6-year-old mare En Francais (Puissance de Lune {Ire}) has been added as a supplementary entry to the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. “The supplementary lots closed at 9:30am this morning, so I've entered her for the Queensland sale and I've told the other owners, so we've just got to work out whether we do sell her there,” Stephens told Racing.com.

“She's such a nice type, so I'm thinking it might be better to sell her where she can be seen. With the carnival being pretty strong over here, it wasn't a weak Group 3, it was a pretty good race, so I'm sure she'll be sought after as a racing and breeding prospect. The Queensland Carnival is on so someone could buy her and have a crack at it.”

En Francais has five wins and ten placings from 20 starts with earnings over $360,000, and she is a daughter of stakes placed winner Detox (Golden Snake {USA}) who is a half-sister to G1 Mackinnon S. winner Alcopop (Jeune {GB}).

Surprise sprint nomination for Melbourne Cup horses

Trainer Danny O’Brien created some surprise when he nominated Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}) and stablemate Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) for Saturday’s Listed Straight Six over 1200 metres. “They're just there in case they need a jumpout really,” O'Brien told Racenet.com.au.

“We haven't decided if they're going to run. They haven't raced for a while. They're potentially heading up to Brisbane so there's not many options to give them a hit-out other than that 1200m Listed race.”

Another 2-year-old winner for Blue Point

Keeping 2-year-old colt Interest Point (Blue Point {Ire}) at home in Mornington on a Monday for his debut raceday outing proved to a masterstroke by trainers David Brideoake and Matt Jenkins with the colt winning by 2.75l.

The half-brother to Group 2 winner Allibor (All Too Hard) was withdrawn as a yearling, and becomes the third first crop winner for Blue Point in Australia. Blue Point, of note, has four stakes placed juveniles; Blue Stratum, Bosustow, Heavy Metal, and Reasonable Point.

Bourke overcomes health issues to get back to training

70-year-old trainer Tom Bourke has overcome several health issues recently and will return to the races with two runners at Rockhampton on Tuesday; 2-year-old filly Dubious Authority (Dubious) and 4-year-old gelding It’s Gerry (Better Than Ready). He has only three horses in work currently.

Tom Bourke

“He didn’t run up the hill at Toowoomba so his owners sent him back here to me,” Bourke told Racingqueensland.com.au about It’s Gerry. “I’ve only had him a week and I haven’t been able to do much with him but he came here in good order from Barry’s (Lockwood).”

“I had the stroke in 2017 but I only lost the use of a few fingers so I kept training. Then the following year I got the double with prostate cancer but I had it removed and everything is good now.”

Unique treble achieved by Queensland’s Brad Stewart

Queensland jockey Brad Stewart achieved something unique at Saturday’s Burrandowan Picnic Race Club meeting when 3-year-old gelding Masterplan (Sidestep) was a dominant winner of the Final of the annual Burnett To The Beach series. Stewart bred, trained, and rode Masterplan!

“He is no world-beater but he was well placed in that race, although he had a big weight,” Stewart told Racingqueensland.com.au on Monday.

“I was not sure at one point I would be back riding so it is nice to breed, train and ride him.” Stewart was having only his third ride back from injury, and he missed a unique fourth part of the achievement as his mother, Pauline, is Masterplan’s owner.

French Guineas delayed by thunderstorm, won by Metropolitan

Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Poulains was delayed by 40 minutes due to a thunderstorm before Metropolitan (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) won for trainer Mario Baratti, who enjoyed his first Classic win. He previously had been assistant to Marco Botti. “On his seasonal debut, I knew he was short of work so we were ready to accept defeat that day knowing he would improve,” Baratti said.

“He finished well after being too far back and so I was encouraged. Not only has he improved fitness-wise, but also mentally and that showed today. … I won the German 2000 Guineas last year, but winning a French Classic is a whole different ball game! I work with a very good team of employees who are very passionate about what they do, so the groundwork has been laid down by all concerned.”

Metropolitan was unbeaten in two starts at two but could only manage fifth in his first run at three. He now has a record of three wins from four starts and this was his first stakes win. From the third crop of the Aga Khan’s Dubawi (Ire) son Zarak (Fr), Metropolitan became his sire’s 19th stakes winner and third Group 1 winner.

“Our breeding operation is also experiencing a great moment with the successes of our stallions such as Zarak and Siyouni. Their success is no coincidence, as it's a long-term project and their breeding pages have a lot going for them. It's a game of intellectual chess with nature as my father likes to say. In our quest, we are helped by the fact that we don't need to follow a trend,” said Princess Zahra Aga Khan after Rouhiya’s Classic win earlier on the card.

Famous silks fight out finish of French 1000 Guineas

The finish to Sunday's G1 Emirates Poule d'Essai des Pouliches had a true 80s throwback feel to it, with the world-famous Aga Khan and Sangster silks involved at the finish of the French Guineas. Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Rouhiya (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) won for the Aga Khan with Sangster’s Kathmandu (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) only a head behind in second.

“Francis-Henri Graffard's gut feeling last year was that she was a Poule filly and only this week, we asked ourselves the question, should we run in the Poule d'Essai on Sunday or head to the (Listed) Prix des Lilas at Chantilly on Saturday?” Princess Zahra Aga Khan said. “We reasoned in terms of the future and in terms of the filly as a breeding prospect, so we opted for the Poule d'Essai. For a breeder to produce a filly like her is extraordinary. It's the reward of decades of work.”

A winner at two, Rouhiya took her record to two wins from four starts and she became Lope De Vega’s 128th stakes winner.

Los Angeles wins Derby Trial

Ballydoyle's unbeaten juvenile Group 1 winner Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) made his 3-year-old debut look impressive in winning the G3 Derby Trial on Sunday. “When he steps up again to a mile and a half he'll improve and he's right now bang in the Derby picture. He's very exciting,” said stable representative Chris Armstrong.

“He's a big horse, but he's a beautiful mover and he's got the right mind,” he added. “You could see him walking around the paddock beforehand, absolutely chilled and he has the same attitude at home. Camelot obviously went around Epsom no problem and this horse has a lot of his sire's good traits.”

It has been 22 years since High Chaparral (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells {GB}) won the Derby Trial and Derby double in 2002, although there were three in succession with Sinndar (Ire) (Grand Lodge {USA}) and Galileo (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells {GB}) winning the double in 2000 and 2001.

Expensive mare wins G3 Soaring Softly S.

Just five months after bringing 700,000gns (AU$1.46million) at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale as a Listed winning 2-year-old, 3-year-old filly Pipsy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) won her North American debut with a last-to-first win in the G3 Soaring Softly S. at Belmont's Aqueduct meeting on Sunday. Sent out as favourite, she made punters nervous by missing the start, but flew home to win.

“The horses were acting up around her and she got very anxious in the gate and broke in the air,” said jockey Flavien Prat. “So, we went to Plan B. I gave her a chance to see if she would get underneath me and she sure did. When I tipped her out, she made a great move.”

Initially sold for €60,000 (AU$98,000) as a weanling at Goffs November Foal Sale in 2021, Pipsy now has three wins from four starts.

UK Racing’s ITV wins second BAFTA

ITV Racing’s coverage of the Cheltenham Festival won a Bafta on Sunday night for the best sports broadcast of 2023, beating the BBC's coverage of FIFA Women's World Cup final, in which England lost to Spain, and the Men's Tennis Final at Wimbledon.

“It feels like a great night for racing,” ITV’s lead host Ed Chamberlin told racingpost.com. “This is the ultimate stage, there were some incredible people here and it's great that racing was up there on the stage. This was the only award for sport too.

“It's a little bit surreal. We were up against the women's world cup, which was probably the ante-post favourite, and when our name was called it was like 'oh my god'. It's our second Bafta and I think we enjoyed this one a little bit more.”

Looking Ahead - May 13

5 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Tuesday, including a promising Starspangledbanner filly that looks ready for her first win and a So You Think (NZ) debutant that has shown some solid trial form going head-to-head at Hawkesbury, and a Xtravagant (NZ) gelding that looks ready to win at Moe.

Hawkesbury, Race 4, 2.10pm, AEST, Blakes Marine 3YO Mdn H., $42,000, 1100m

She’s All It, 3-year-old filly (Starspangledbanner x Buroog {Artie Schiller {USA})

The well-bred Starspangledbanner filly She’s All It is set to have her fourth start over 1100 metres for Brad Widdup on her home track at Hawkesbury on Tuesday. She has placed in all three of her starts and looks very close to a win.

She’s All It is the second foal out of the well-bred Artie Schiller (USA) mare Buroog who was unraced on the track but is well related being a half-sister to the very exciting colt Coleman (Pierata) who this season has been victorious in the G3 Chairman’s S., and the Listed Debutant S., he has also managed placings in the G1 Golden Slipper, G1 Sires’ Produce S., and the G3 Pago Pago S.

Other half-siblings are Liwa (Mulaazem) who has been successful three-times including the Listed Sir Ernest-Lee Steere Classic, Listed Supremacy S., and the ten-time winning gelding Exdream (Dream Ahead {USA}).

This family has even more substance to it with other high class performers featuring such as Rothesay, Sensei, Fast Witness (Star Witness), Canny Lass (Bletchingly), Causeway Lass (Giant’s Causeway {USA}), Astute Angel (Godswalk {USA}) and Eckstein (I Am Invincible).

She’s All It was a $12,500 value purchase by Jomar Park Stud from the draft of Emirates Park at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Book 2 Sale.

Hawkesbury, Race 4, 2.10pm, AEST, Blakes Marine 3YO Mdn H., $42,000, 1100m

Flying Thinker, 3-year-old filly (So You Think (NZ) x Hela Flyer {Lonhro)

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Flying Thinker will travel to Hawkesbury on Tuesday to make her debut over 1100 metres. She has trialled well, placing second at her last trial on April 23 at Rosehill over 1030 metres behind the Listed winner Ghaanati (Deep Impact {Jpn}) to prepare herself for this assignment.

The promising filly is by So You Think (NZ) and is the third foal from the Lonhro mare Hela Flyer, who was a winner over 1200 metres. Her first two foals Mikki Bean (Mikki Isle {Jpn}) and Reward In Time (Reward For Effort) have both been placed on the track and are both still active as racehorses.

So You Think (NZ) | Standing at Coolmore

The family page is a little quiet up close in regards to stakes horses but Flying Thinkers grandam is Hela Dubai (Danehill {USA}), she is a full-sister to Al Maher, a three-quarter-sister to Platinum Scissors, Redoute’s Choice, Superior Sateen, Monsoon Wedding (Danehill), and a half-sister to Salameh (Secret Savings {USA}).

This is a super family and other stallions that do feature within the page are Al Maher, Hilal, Umatilla, Hurricane Sky, Manhattan Rain and Echoes Of Heaven.

Unfortunately Flying Thinker is the last foal for Hela Flyer who passed away in late 2021. Flying Thinker with the blood that she possesses has a future in the breeding shed and hopefully she can build a winning race record prior to that happening.

Moe, Race 4, 2.30pm, AEST, Crown Hotel Mdn Plate, $27,000, 1200m

Tatsu, 3-year-old gelding (Xtravagant (NZ) x Mussenden {Fastnet Rock})

The progressive Tatsu is set to have his fourth start over 1200 metres for Cranbourne trainers Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans on the back of a very good placing at Kyneton on April 27 over 1215 metres when beaten by the handy Godolphin owned filly Abstruse (Sidestep).

Tatsu is a son of Newhaven Park’s sire Xtravagant (NZ) and is the fourth foal from the Fastnet Rock mare Mussenden. She was unplaced on the track but has left two winners in Bookman (Xtravagant) who has won four-times including metropolitan wins in Melbourne and Adelaide, and So Blucky (Exosphere).

Tatsu’s grandam Temple Of Peace (Jpn) (Carnegie {Ire}) was stakes-placed in France and a three-time winner from 2000 to 2900 metres. She has forged a successful broodmare career leaving six winners including the star racehorse Whobegotyou (Street Cry {Ire}). In his career he notched up ten wins including the G1 Caulfield Guineas, G1 Yalumba S., G2 Blamey S., G2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes-twice, G2 Aami Vase, G2 Bill Stutt S., and the G2 PB Lawrence S.

Tatsu sold for $45,000 at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale to Kennewell Racing/Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA) being the successful purchaser from the draft of Newhaven Park.

Looking Back:

A good day for our Sunday selections with the well-bred Fitzpatrick (Snitzel) winning impresssively by 6.5 lengths on the Sunshine Coast Poly Track. Then at Mudgee, Unleeshing (Dundeel) stormed home from well back in the field to win in great fashion on debut.
