Race-Day Recap

The Chris Waller-trained Lazzura (Snitzel) had to dig deep to deny Satin Stiletto (Written Tycoon) in the Listed Woodlands S.
The Autumn Sun has unveiled another smart prospect in Sneaky Sunrise, who broke her maiden with authority on Saturday at Flemington and may aim up for Queensland’s riches.

Bittercreek adds another for Snitzel

Trained by the Victorian-based father and son duo, Leon and Troy Corstens, and ridden by Blake Shinn, the 2-year-old colt held off the game El Morzillo (Star Witness) and President (I Am Invincible).
Shinn told 7HorseRacing, “Bittercreek has that bit of X-factor about him. He’s got all the attributes to make it. I think he’ll get further than 1200 metres; I believe a mile will be right up his alley.”
Bittercreek is the eighth foal and third individual stakes winner for the Bite The Bullet (USA) mare Rose Of Cimmaron. She is a full sister to Mica’s Pride, who is the dam of the outstanding Criterion (NZ) (Sebring) and his Group 1-winning half-brother Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock).

Rose Of Cimmaron’s other stakes winning progeny are the Group 3-winning full brothers Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) and Bull Point, who was also third in the G1 Golden Rose and the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S.
Additionally, Bittercreek is also related to the brilliant Najoom (Northern Meteor), victress of the G3 Fred Best Classic and dam of the talented Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and Najmaty (I Am Invincible).
Bittercreek was a $375,000 purchase by Malua Bloodstock and Baystone Farm from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
The colt brings Snitzel’s stakes tally to 143 stakes winners.
Lazzura and Stiletto fight out Woodlands
Lazzura (Snitzel) looked set for an easy victory in the Listed Woodlands S. at Scone on Saturday, as her rider Tommy Berry, set her alight down the outside. However, the second-placed Satin Stiletto (Written Tycoon) from the Matthew Dale stable found plenty under Joshua Parr, to fight back in a stirring contest to the line.
The Chris Waller-trained Lazzura narrowly managed to gain the upper hand to take her record to two-from-two. Satin Siletto held second, as the Lazzura’s stablemate Let’s Go Barbie (Yes Yes Yes) ran third and Zoubaby (Zoustar) was fourth.
Berry was impressed with the manner Lazzura triumphed in the Woodland S., telling Racenet, “I loved the way this filly pinned her ears back and showed an impressive turn of foot.

“You don’t want to get carried away too much but this is a good horse’s race. I won it on Libertini and In Secret, so the top fillies can come through Scone. I think she’ll be even better next season.”
Representing Waller at Scone was Charlie Duckworth, who indicated Lazzura would likely be spelled, “I think Lazzura’s job is done as a 2-year-old, its mission accomplished with this win,” he told Racenet.
“To get a black type win so early in her career is great because she will be a much better 3-year-old than what she is now but we'll take it.

“Lazzura does seem a very sharp filly but obviously we would like to think she could be a contender for the first couple of legs of the Princess Series.”
Lazzura is the third foal from Laguna Azzurra (Jpn), a daughter of Heart’s Cry (Jpn). She won over 1800 metres and is the dam of the talented stakes-placed Portorosa (Not A Single Doubt) and the dual winner Takshaka (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}).
The filly's half-sister Portorosa is set to be offered at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale as Lot 516 by Attunga Stud.

Laguna Azzura is a daughter of the seven-time winner, Silky Lagoon (Jpn) (Brian’s Time {USA}) and a half-sister to the dual Group 3 victor Seewind (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
Lazzura is the 142nd stakes winner for Arrowfield Stud’s four-time Champion Sire Snitzel, who will stand the 2024 breeding season for a fee of $247,500 (inc GST).
Sunrise books Brisbane ticket?
Returning to Flemington after an unlucky trip in the Listed Anzac Day S., the Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained Sneaky Sunrise (The Autumn Sun) found no such difficulties on Saturday to record her maiden victory.
Sneaky Sunrise, ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, was strong to the line at the end of the 1400-metre contest, defeating Narbold (Churchill {Ire}) and Snack Bar (Frosted {USA}).
Co-trainer JD Hayes told Racing.com, “The race went perfectly to plan, and a wonderful ride from Daniel (Stackhouse). I’m really pleased with that victory, she (Sneaky Sunrise) had a lot of authority at the end.

“We will have to sit down and talk to connections, MyRacehorse has been fantastic supporters for us and it’s brilliant to have a filly, especially one we didn’t think would be doing things until later.
“It’s a good future to have - whether we go to Queensland, stay in Melbourne or put her away for the Spring.”
Sneaky Sunrise, continues the sensational run of Arrowfield Stud’s The Autumn Sun. The son of Redoute’s Choice has sired three Group 1 winners this season and will stand for $66,000 (inc GST) this spring.
