Looking Ahead - May 23

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting runners are set to hit the track at Pakenham on Thursday. Including a promising Trapeze Artist colt debuting and an Almanzor (Fr) mare that ran well on debut looking to win her maiden at start number two.

On The Move, 3-year-old gelding (Trapeze Artist x Little Gypsy {Lonhro})

On The Move, a gelded son of Trapeze Artist, will make his debut at Pakenham for Danny O’Brien.

This gelding is the third foal from the Lonhro mare Little Gypsy, who was a two-time winner on the track over 1200 metres. She is the producer of two-winners including the two-time winner Mr Gorman (Epaulette) and Flying Concello (Trapeze Artist) who won two races as a juvenile. Little Gypsy is also a half-sister to Roma Giaconda (Magic Albert) who was a winner at 1400 metres and was placed in the G2 Stan Fox S., and the G1 VRC Oaks.

Further back in the pedigree are the top-class performers Moon Dragon (Danehill {USA}), Niblick (Encosta De Lago), Flying Award (Shamus Award), Zagreb (Zabeel {NZ}), Leica Western (Best Western) and Leica Smile (At Talaq {USA}).

Little Gypsy, since producing On The Move, has left a Blue Point (Ire) weanling colt and was most recently served by Trapeze Artist again last spring.

On The Move cost Danny O’Brien Racing $200,000 at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Newhaven Park.

Los Alamoss (NZ), 4-year-old mare (Almanzor (Fr) x Hot ‘N’ Moss (NZ) {Strategic Image})

The promising Los Alamoss (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) is set to have her second start over 1400 metres for Pakenham based trainer Peter Gelagotis on her home track on the back of a strong third placing at her last start also at Pakenham on May 9 when she finished on strongly from back in the field.

Los Alamoss is a daughter of Cambridge Stud’s Shuttling Stallion in Almanzor (Fr) and is out of the Strategic Image (Ire) two-time winning mare Hot ‘N’ Moss (NZ).

Hot ‘N’ Moss has already become a successful broodmare, she has left the tough Moss ‘N’ Dale (Castledale {Ire}) who was successful fourteen times including the G3 Craven P., Listed Sale Cup and the Listed Tokyo City Cup. Her other winners are the Castledale geldings that both won four-races respectively in Moss ‘n’ Bolt (NZ) and Boss’n The Moss (NZ).

Overall Los Alamoss’s family is a bit quiet up front but further back it features some good tough fallopers including the dual Group 1 winner Moss Downs (NZ) (Tom’s Shu {USA}), the G1 winner Sphenophyta (NZ) (Groom Dancer {USA}), Skyphyta (NZ) (Pierro), Sobay (NZ) (Otehi Bay), Admiring (Street Cry {Ire}) and Miss Admiration (Sebring).

Looking Back

Markdel (Snitzel) ran a super race at Bendigo, he burst through the pack, looked the likely winner and only got outfinished by the bob of the head running second. True Amor (I Am Invincible) was scratched, he looks like he may be running at Hawkesbury on Thursday, so potentially watch out for him in Race 4.
