The 2024 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale opened on Tuesday with impressive results despite a challenging market. Widden Stud's Zoustar dominated as the leading sire, with his three progeny taking the top three podium spots. Baramul Stud, the leading vendor of the day, contributed two of these top-performing Zoustars.

At A Glance

On Tuesday, 110 out of the 200 catalogued lots were sold with a gross recorded at $5,220,000. In comparison, last year saw 97 of the 202 catalogued lots on Day 1 sell for $4,504,500.

The average price sits at $47,455, slightly above the $46,174 recorded in on the opening day in 2023. However, the median price of $29,000 is narrowly below last year’s figure of $30,000.

The top price of $400,000 is lower than the top price of $750,000 last year. The clearance rate sits at 67 per cent (56 per cent in 2023).

Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis CNZM (BAFNZ) is presently the leading buyer, having purchased four yearlings at a gross of $665,000, including the sale topper Lot 1388.

Baramul Stud was Tuesday’s leading vendor, selling 10 yearlings for a gross of $1,095,000, including the sale-topper.

Widden Stud’s Zoustar finished Tuesday’s session as the leading sire, with his three progeny offered filling the top three placings and grossing $950,000.

The leading buying location on Tuesday was New South Wales, accounting for 28 lots with a total spend of $1,430,500.

Bowditch declares opening session satisfactory

Tuesday’s opening session of the 2024 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale saw a top price achieved of $400,000 by Lot 1388, a Zoustar colt presented by Baramul Stud. At time the time of writing the clearance rate sits at 67.07 per cent.

Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch chatted to The Thoroughbred Report in the aftermath of the sale, “Tuesday’s trading was in-line with expectations. We know the National Yearling Sale always has a softer clearance rate than most other sales we run.

“The results are satisfactory at this point. I think if you had a well-conformed, nicely bred horse that vetted well in the ring you were rewarded. I felt the sale had significant participation in a day where it was a selective market. There were some fantastic results. Early on we had an Admire Mars colt make $140,000 and a Tassort filly sell for $175,000, very, very strong results.

“On top of that, the three Zoustars, the I Am Invincible and the So You Think sold very well.”

Bowditch was thrilled by the participation from the Asian market, “It was fantastic. We’ve marketed this sale very hard towards our clients in Asia. David Chester and Nicky Wong have done a fantastic job travelling around and garnering support for the sale.

“We had buyers from Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and the Philippines. The Phillipines purchased 18 horses today (Tuesday), so that was fantastic. We also had great participation from New Zealand, led by David Ellis and the great team at Te Akau Racing. So, it was a session with very solid international support.

“There were some fantastic results. Early on we had an Admire Mars colt make $140,000 and a Tassort filly sell for $175,000, very, very strong results.” - Barry Bowditch

Heading into Wednesday’s conclusion, Bowditch said, “We’ve got some quality horses to sell again tomorrow (Wednesday). There’s less horses in Book 1 tomorrow than there were today but I think we can increase the clearance rate. So, I think we’d be pleased where it’s ended up in what can only be seen as a tricky market.”

Baramul stars

Baramul Stud celebrated a fantastic opening session, supplying the two top-priced lots, two yearlings by Zoustar in Lot 1388 at $400,000 and Lot 1297 for $350,000. They also filled the fifth podium with a stunning So You Think (NZ) filly, Lot 1303.

Lot 1388, a colt by Zoustar, boasts an impressive pedigree. He hails from the outstanding Shamardal (USA) mare, No Evidence Needed, a victress of the G2 Let’s Elope S. and dual Group 1 placegetter. The talented mare has proven to be a fantastic broodmare; her son Move To Strike (I Am Invincible) is a dual winner and claimed the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce, while her Snitzel gelding Discharged won five races and was Group 2-placed.

The colt was snapped up by Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis CNZM (BAFNZ) for $400,000. Ellis, who knows the family well having sourced Move To Strike, raced him in his tangerine colours of Te Akau Racing to success in a Group 1.

Baramul Stud's elegant and well-related Zoustar filly, Lot 1297, was sold to The Two Old Men Syndicate for $350,000. She's the seventh foal from the winning More Than Ready (USA) mare Fit And Ready, dam of stakes winners Outrageous (All Too Hard), Very Tempting (Redoute’s Choice), and the Group 2-placed Temptaction (All Too Hard).

Lot 1297 was quickly followed by Lot 1303, a grey filly by So You Think (NZ), who was secured for $180,000 by Singapore’s Eric Koh. Fullazz (Redoute's Choice), the dam of Lot 1303, is a four-time winner, including the Listed Debutante S., and the dam of G1 Rosehill Guineas winner and young sire D’Argento, alongside Fullazaboot (Sepoy), and Diamonds Choice (So You Think {NZ}).

Luke McDonald, Baramul Stud’s racing manager, commented, "Lot 1297 is by Zoustar, and when you have a Zoustar in the sale, everyone looks at them. She stood out in our draft, so to fetch $350,000, I think it was rewarding but she deserved it.

Lot 1297 - Zoustar x Fit and Ready (filly) | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

“She (Lot 1297) has the pedigree to match, and very well-related to the stakes performers out of a Golden Slipper family, so for her to come to a June sale, she deserves to be going close to the top of the sale.

“The filly ticked all the boxes and I think the buyer will reap the rewards later down the track, if they give her a bit of time.”

Commenting on the So You Think (Lot 1303), McDonald added, “She is gorgeous. She’s from an old family that always produces a good horse. Lot 1303 came to this sale because she was a little bit behind the speed in January, and being a staying physical, we thought she would be well-suited at the Magic Millions National Sale, and another one that would stand out.

“She’s (Lot 1297) has the pedigree to match, and very well-related to the stakes performers out of a Golden Slipper family.” - Luke McDonald

“She’s gone into the ring and fetched good money ($180,000) but again, she deserved it. She ticked all the boxes like the Zoustar. Lot 1303 has done a good job to get here in good order, and she’s such a beautiful, elegant filly. When she walks, she moves with purpose. I’d say she’s going to be getting over some distance like her full brother (D’Argento) and win a few races.”

Speaking about Tuesday’s session from a vendor's perspective, McDonald said, “I’m very happy. Magic Millions have done a good job. I think what I’ve noticed is the majority of vendors actually are meeting the market. They’re not getting too ambitious, and I think there’s a lot of value to be found here for buyers.

“If we (vendors) keep meeting the market, they’re going to continue to sell.

Rossiter reflects on remarkable sale result

The demand for progeny from Newgate Farm’s young stallion, Tassort, shows no signs of slowing down. This season, the Group 1-producing son of Brazen Beau has achieved impressive results, with top sales reaching $380,000 and $350,000. On Tuesday, he added another fantastic result for his supporters when Lot 1260 sold for $175,000 to Norman Gardener.

Lot 1260, presented by At Last Farm and bred by Anita Rossiter, is the seventh foal from County Tale, a Tale Of The Cat (USA) mare. County Tale won four races, including three consecutive victories over distances from 1010 to 1100 metres. Three of her foals to race have been winners, including Speedy King (Toorak Toff), who has won seven races with prizemoney exceeding $1 million.

Additionally, the daughter of Tassort comes from the family of Chinny Boom (Spirit Of Boom), winner of the Listed Helen Coughlan S. at Eagle Farm last Saturday. Chinny Boom has won nine races in total, with earnings of over $650,000.

Rossiter works on nightwatch at Newgate.

The Thoroughbred Report caught up with Rossiter to chat about the remarkable result. “It is a very hard feeling to describe when you take a horse to the sales and achieve this result. You’re thinking, you’ll be happy with $25,000 or you’ll take her home (Lot 1260) and race her; but she just kept going higher and higher. My thoughts turned to the fact that I would not be taking her home.

“Then she landed on $175,000, and I just walked out. It was a very hard feeling to process. You breed to sell, that’s why people breed, or to race themselves, so it was a very, very good result financially for us.”

“Then she landed on $175,000, and I just walked out. It was a very hard feeling to process. You breed to sell, that’s why people breed, or to race themselves, so it was a very, very good result financially for us.” - Anita Rossiter

There was some wonderful synergy in the result. Rossiter, a former Godolphin employee, arrived at Henry Field’s Newgate Farm around the same time as the Darley-bred and Godolphin-raced Tassort. Rossiter explained, “Both Tassort and myself came from Godolphin originally and arrived at Newgate around the same time. I did my first night at Newgate, and Tassort was there in the box. I thought, ‘We came together, he’s bred in the purple, and he’s a beautiful stallion,’ so he really was the obvious choice for me to send County Tale to.”

Rossiter added, “I hope Tassort goes on to become the next ‘big stallion,’ so to speak. I would also like to thank Newgate for just being so wonderful. They’re just terrific.”

Kiwis active

Kiwis were active across Tuesday at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale. Young gun Bevan Smith, of Bevan Smith Bloodstock, celebrated his first Australian Group 1 winner with Warmonger (NZ) (War Decree {USA}), who he co-purchased with Kelly Van Dyk’s Prima Park. Following Warmonger's victory in last Saturday’s G1 Queensland Derby, Smith was keen to reinvest in the market.

Early in the session, Smith struck for Lot 1214, a Tarzino (NZ) colt from the Red Giant (USA) mare Ashima (NZ), from the draft of Westbury Stud. Smith signed under his Bevan Smith Bloodstock banner, alongside the young Kiwi trainer Steven Cole of Steven Cole Racing.

Speaking to TTR AusNZ after purchasing, Smith said, “He (Lot 1214) was a lovely balanced horse; he walked with great purpose and covered the ground efficiently. He’s a Derby style of horse; he’ll develop into a really nice 3-year-old type. I’ve bought him for a good young trainer in New Zealand named Steven Cole.”

Later in the session, the pair combined again to land Lot 1316, a Dundeel (NZ) colt offered by Arrowfield Stud. The well-related colt is the sixth living foal from the Redoute’s Choice mare Grito, a half-sister to Sung (Anabaa {USA}), dam of the Group 1 winner Microphone, and Shouts (Strategic), who produced the G1 Canterbury S. victor Holler. Grito is the dam of the Group 3-placed Kazuhiko (Deep Impact {Jpn}), and the dual winner Showsumgrit (Written Tycoon).

Also active in the market and eager to reinvest in the Magic Millions sale ring, after Te Akau Racing’s Champion Mare Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) fetched $6.6 million at last week’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, was David Ellis CNZM.

Ellis has found much success at the Magic Millions National Sale, having purchased the outstanding G1 Zabeel Classic victress Campionessa (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}) for $60,000 from the Westbury Stud draft in 2019.

“He (Lot 1214) was a lovely balanced horse; he walked with great purpose and covered the ground efficiently. He’s a Derby style of horse.” - Bevan Smith

Striking early, Ellis, signing under David Ellis (BAFNZ), secured Lot 1232, a Hellbent filly for $57,500 from Lincoln Farms. The filly is the third living foal from the Ready’s Image (USA) mare Beside You, a three-time winner and from the family of the dual Listed winner Vintage Brut (GB).

Ellis then signed for a filly from Newhaven Park, sired by the former Te Akau Racing star, Cool Aza Beel (NZ). Lot 1294, purchased for $67,500, is from the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Fiction, a daughter of the G1 Golden Slipper winner Polar Success (Success Express {USA}) and half-sister to the Listed victress Lillemor (Hallowed Crown).

The most expensive of Ellis’ purchases came later in the session when he paid $140,000 for Lot 1353, a filly by the Champion Sire Written Tycoon offered by Yulong and then lit up the ring handing over $400,000 to Baramul Stud for Lot 1388, a Zoustar half-brother to Te Akau Racing’s Group 1 winner Move To Strike (I Am Invincible)

Lot 1353 is the third foal from the More Than Ready (USA) mare Lijiang, who is a half-sister to Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1-placed Brazuca, and the 10-time winner Mr Utopia (Elusive Quality HUSA}).

New Zealand buyers walked with eight lots at a total spend of $894,000, and buying at an average $111,750.

Trade strong for the 'right horse'

There was strong competition for yearlings deemed to have ticked all the boxes for investors. Nick Taylor’s Riverstone Lodge made its Magic Millions National Yearling Sale debut and achieved a strong result with Lot 1347, a colt by the Widden Stud-based superstar Zoustar.

Lot 1347 was sold for $200,000 to Australian Bloodstock. Taylor told TTR AusNZ, “He’s a beautiful colt. He arrived at the farm already in amazing condition from Mick (Malone) and Pauline (Alix) and the team at North. It was such an honour to be able to present a quality colt carrying that brand for myself and the farm (Riverstone Lodge). He was purchased by great judges in Australian Bloodstock, and he will get every chance to be successful.”

The well-related filly is the first foal from the Fastnet Rock mare Ladybeetle, a full sister to G1 George Ryder S. winner Dreamforce, and a half-sister to the Group 3-placed Deep Chill (Wandjina). Ladybeetle is a daughter of the G1 Coolmore Classic and G1 Queensland Oaks victress Eskimo Queen (NZ) (Shinko King {Ire}).

The astute syndicator Joe O’Neill of Prime Thoroughbreds has a knack for finding good horses at fair prices. He looks to have struck gold by purchasing a colt by Yarraman Park’s Champion Sire I Am Invincible for $200,000 from Attunga Stud.

Lot 1357 was the sole offering by his Champion Sire and is the first foal from the Sebring mare Loretta, a half-sister to Meuse (Snitzel), a Listed winner. Additionally, Loretta is from the outstanding family of Redoute’s Choice, Rubick, Manhattan Rain, and others.

Also, looking like an astute piece of buying from the Group 1-winning Cranbourne-based horseman Lloyd Kennewell, under his Kennewell Racing banner and Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA) when they passed over $100,000 to secure Lot 1273 from Emirates Park. The filly, by Arrowfield’s four-time Champion Sire Snitzel, is the sixth foal from the Dream Ahead (USA) mare Dream Cirque.

“She looked a typical, sharp Snitzel filly, with nice scope for improvement," Kennewell told TTR AusNZ.

“She's from a very good farm and was of unbelievable value. She was a no-brainer to add to our purchasers this year.”

Lloyd Kennewell

Dream Cirque, although unraced, is a proven producer. Her second foal, Lightsaber, a son of Zoustar, won the G2 Sires’ Produce S. and the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude and was placed in the G1 Australian Guineas. Lightsaber stands at Darling View Thoroughbreds in Western Australia and served 100 mares in his debut season last year.

Lot 1273 has a half-sister by Wootton Bassett (GB), born last November, while her dam visited the dual Group 1 winner Home Affairs.

Asian presence strong

Hong Kong-based buyers struck early in Tuesday’s session, securing Lot 1204 for $140,000. This well-built colt by Admire Mars (Jpn), a triple Group 1-winning son of Daiwa Major (Jpn), shuttles to Arrowfield Stud. Lot 1204, presented by Berkeley Park Stud, is the second foal from the Al Maher mare Al Pheroz, a winner over 1400 metres. Her first foal, Fools Play (Supido), is a race winner, and she foaled a colt by Zousain last November.

Local trainer Adam Campton, representing the Hong Kong-based Strike Thoroughbreds, told Magic Millions, “Lucky to get him. He’s a lovely colt for some great supporters of ours.

“We’ll make a decision on whether he’ll head to Hong Kong or stay with us and race in Australia. We’ll leave that for a few months and get him into the paddock. The Magic Millions National Yearling Sale is one we target. I’ve had a bit of luck here, buying some handy horses and even some horses that have been vetted for Hong Kong already from here.”

Not long after, another son of Admire Mars (Jpn), Lot 1322, caught the attention of Singapore-based buyer Eric Koh. The bay colt, offered by Bowness Stud, was knocked down for $100,000. Lot 1322 is the first foal from the dual-winner High Tango, a daughter of High Chaparral (Ire) and a half-sister to the six-time winner and Listed-placed Egyptian Bullet (Bullet Train {GB}).

Bowness Stud also produced a pleasing result with Lot 1257, a colt by their resident budding sire D’Argento. Lot 1257 sold for $75,000 to the Philippines-based Jun Almeda.

The Hong Kong-based Magus Equine went to $65,000 to secure Westbury Stud’s Lot 1255, a colt by its resident sire El Roca and from the Group 1-producing mare Concert Girl (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Eric Koh

Overall, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines accounted for 34 purchases, with the Philippines leading the way with 18 purchases at a gross of $395,000.

Analyse this: June trainer focus on Tony & Calvin McEvoy

4 min read
In this series, TTR AusNZ shines the analytical spotlight on an in-form sire, trainer, vendor or breeder who is enjoying a particularly good run and Tony & Calvin McEvoy is TTR AusNZ's trainer of the month.

Father and son duo Tony and Calvin McEvoy are enjoying a stellar run, maintaining a stakes-winning strike rate of 12 per cent for the season. Since partnering up in September 2019, the McEvoy team has claimed an impressive 34 stakes victories in just four seasons. This season alone, they have secured 10 feature race victories across four states, headlined by Group 1 wins with Veight (Grunt {NZ}) and Coco Sun (The Autumn Sun).

• The partnership boasts a stakes-winning strike rate of 12 per cent and a Group 1-winning strike rate of 16 per cent this season.

• The partnership maintains a current season strike rate of 40 per cent placegetters to runners when competing in Group 1 races.

• Forty-four per cent of their current season 2-year-olds stakes or feature race starters have finished in the top three placings.

• The partnership has purchased all of their current season's stakes winners as yearlings for an average price of $265,000.

When competing in Group 1 races, the team has managed to secure an impressive strike rate of over 40 per cent placegetters to runners this season. Notably, both of their current season Group 1 winners have triumphed interstate: Coco Sun won the G1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville, and Veight claimed top honours in the G1 George Ryder S. at Rosehill.

From fewer than 40 juvenile starts this season, the team has collected three feature juvenile events, including the recent $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic with Too Darn Hot (GB) filly Arabian Summer. This victory marked Arabian Summer's third career win and her second lucrative Magic Millions victory after claiming the $250,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic last year. The team has an affinity with the Magic Millions series, having claimed eight of its feature races since its inception, including the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO Classic with Sunlight (Zoustar) in 2018.

In addition to their success with sales-restricted race series, the McEvoy team capitalises on the rich VOBIS series, restricted to horses sired by Victorian-based stallions. This year, the team trained the winners of two feature events, including the $500,000 VOBIS Sires Guineas with Elphinstone (Street Boss {USA}) and the $175,000 VOBIS Gold Eureka Stockade with Sunset Dreaming (Impending). Both horses were sourced at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $200,000 and $150,000, respectively.

While their results on the track are impressive, their buying record is remarkable in it's own right. With the assistance of Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock (FBAA), the McEvoy team has purchased all of their current season feature race winners at relatively modest prices. At the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the team purchased six yearlings at an average price of just over $150,000. Among these were elite winners Veight and Coco Sun, secured for $220,000 and $250,000, respectively. Together, these two horses have collected over $2.8 million in prize money, nearly six times their combined purchase price.

Similarly, at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, the McEvoy team and Belmont Bloodstock secured nine yearlings, two of which have since won stakes or feature races. Arabian Summer, a $900,000-plus earner, was a modest $220,000 purchase from the Coolmore Stud draft, while the dual Group 3 winning colt Dublin Down (Exceedance) was a $370,000 purchase from the Edinburgh Park draft.

Other recent notable purchases include $2 million Inglis Millennium winner Xtravagant Star (Xtravagant {NZ}), secured for just $150,000 from the 2021 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, and last year's G3 Thoroughbreds Stakes winner Bossy Nic (Nicconi), purchased for $190,000 at the following edition of the same sale.

Whether it's 2-year-old races, restricted races, or weight-for-age Group 1s, Tony and Calvin McEvoy are a formidable partnership making significant waves in the racing world.

Torryburn will be cheering on Mare Of Mt Buller in Queensland Oaks

8 min read
When the promising filly Mare Of Mt Buller (Dundeel {NZ}) lines up as one of the favoured runners in Saturday's G1 Queensland Oaks it will not only be her owners cheering her on, but also her proud breeders - Torryburn Stud.

The Thoroughbred Report had a chat with Torryburn's stud manager Mel Copelin about their latest Group 1 contender as well as the success horses carrying their brand have been enjoying in recent times.

There is a lot of sentiment attached to Mare Of Mt Buller and should she claim this Saturday's fillies Classic at Eagle Farm there will undoubtedly be a tissue or two dabbed at the eyes of her supporters at Torryburn.

For she was bred in partnership with the late Alan Osburg, a great friend of Torryburn's Cornish family - a man who loved his horses, his racing and racing people.

Whilst it was Nick Moraitis in much of the spotlight when Exceed And Excel was strutting his stuff on the track, Osburg was also there to share the excitement and the glory and whilst that horse was of course sold to Darley, his part-owner - who died after a battle with brain cancer in August 2022 - had most of his horses based at Torryburn.

Such as his beloved home-bred mare Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense {USA}) who he told the press at the time gave him more joy than even Exceed And Excel - winning seven of her 32 starts including the G1 Coolmore Classic and another four races in Group company.

It was in 2016 that Osburg headed to the Inglis Australia Broodmare Sale in search of a new mare, Mel Copelin at his side on a day she remembers fondly.

The last Inglis sale at Newmarket

“It was the last broodmare sale at the Newmarket stables," she said, "and I remember walking the length of the complex looking for just the right mare.

Mel Copelin

“Alan was about to go and have a beer when I said let's pull Aliberani (Redoute's Choice) out. We had bought her as a yearling but had sold her on.

“She was as beautiful a mare as you'd ever see - balanced and correct - and Alan joked about why didn't we look at her in the first place!”

A four times winner (three of her victories coming at metropolitan level at Sandown) for the Peter Moody stable, Aliberani returned to the Torryburn fold in foal to Dissident for $280,000.

That foal - Miss Anarchy - was sold for $90,000 as an Easter yearling, winning a maiden at the Sapphire Coast. In the meantime Aliberani's first foal Light Up The Room (So You Think {NZ}) was displaying talent - winning a couple of races at Doomben and earning black-type thirds in the G3 Vo Rogue Plate and the Listed Tattersalls S.

Light Up The Room is a story in herself - the first thoroughbred purchased by the Cunningham family who loved the experience so much they delved further into the racing game; setting up Ridgmont Farm and buying more horses such as this year's RL Magic Millions hero Storm Boy (Justify {USA}).

“She (Aliberani) was as beautiful a mare as you'd ever see - balanced and correct - and Alan joked about why didn't we look at her in the first place!” - Mel Copelin

Aliberani's next foal by Dissident died with her next being the three times provincial winner Facetious (Shalaa {Ire}) who was sold online a couple of years ago with her owners sending her to Brave Smash (Jpn) last spring.

Torryburn's support of Dundeel

Missing the following season, Aliberani then visited Dundeel (NZ), a horse the Torryburn team have always had plenty of time for - “we have supported him every year and have had foals by him every year,” Copelin said.

And they were very happy with the result of the Dundeel - Aliberani mating, the early September 2020 born filly catching the eye early - “she was a beautiful foal,” Copelin said.

Taken to the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the filly was purchased by Yes Bloodstock for $250,000 and it is that group who race her with the Chris Waller stable.

Dundeel | Standing at Arrowfield

Finding the line well despite being awkwardly placed turning at her Geelong debut in June last year, Mare Of Mt Buller showed talent in a maiden that would go on to prove a good form reference - won by the recent G1 South Australian Derby winner Coco Sun (The Autumn Sun).

Given time to mature, Mare Of Mt Buller reappeared in a Super Maiden at Kembla Grange in mid-December - creating a big impression with a barnstorming victory from the rear.

Three in a row for Mare Of Mt Buller

Up in class at Canterbury at her next start she was again in winning form and at Rosehill the following month she made it three in a row.

So impressive was she with that trio of wins that it was thought viable to give her a crack at the big time but she drew the outside gate in the G1 Vinery Stud S.; far from disgraced finishing sixth behind Orchestral (NZ) (Savabeel) and Tutta La Vita (The Autumn Sun) - one of her rivals on Saturday.

Mare Of Mt Buller as a yearling

Faring even worse with barrier luck when contesting the Listed Princess S. at Eagle Farm in late April, Mare Of Mt Buller got back from gate 18 and was again picking up nicely late. Stepping up to 2000m in the G2 The Roses she ran another great race - a game second despite not being in the best part of the track.

A run which has her nicely primed for the 2400m of Saturday's Queensland Oaks, a race should she win will enhance upon the already excellent record of high level performance for Torryburn graduates.

Hong Kong stars

Such as the outstanding Hong Kong gallopers Straight Arron (Fastnet Rock) - a $270,000 purchase for Chris Waller at Easter and Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) - a $380,000 purchase for Ricky Yui at the Classic.

As well as last year's G1 Coolmore Classic winner Espiona (Extreme Choice) - a $190,000 Magic Millions purchase for Star Thoroughbreds and Randwick Bloodstock and the triple Group winner Hope In Your Heart (Dundeel) who now calls Arrowfield home having sold for $750,000 at this year's Chairman's Sale.

Voyage Bubble

Remarkably each of those horses were foaled the same year - 2018 certainly a vintage spring (despite drought conditions) for Torryburn. A year they will be enjoying the success of for some time to come with yet another topliner born that season - Coolmore Stud's dual Group 1 winning sprinter Home Affairs.

The stallion is enjoying outstanding sales results with his 16 weanlings at the recent Magic Millions National Sale selling for up to $430,000 with an average of $189,688; making him the most sought after of the first season stallions represented.

Supporting Home Affairs at stud, Torryburn have plenty to look forward to with his career, Copelin excited at the prospect of cheering home his progeny with memories of him as a foal still firmly in her mind.

Perfect from day one

“You can tell the good ones when they are born and he was perfect from day one,” she said.

Home Affairs was bred when his Champion Sire I Am Invincible stood at a fee of $110,000 and it was a nice result for Torryburn when Tom Magnier put his hand up for a winning bid of $875,000 at Easter.

“I Am Invincible - along with Dundeel - have certainly been good to us,” Copelin said, noting that Torryburn are still utilizing his services, also having mares due this spring to the lines of Zoustar, Dundeel, Wootton Bassett (GB), Pierro, Russian Revolution and - of course, Home Affairs.

Home Affairs | Standing at Coolmore

Torryburn is home to 55 well related mares and Copelin enjoys the process - one which she calls “daunting but fun” of deciding their mates each year.

“We sit down with Brett (Cornish) and work out who suits each mare and then figure out if we can afford those stallions. When the fees come out, we may do a bit of changing but we come out with a plan.”

Torryburn no longer have Mare Of Mt Buller's dam Aliberani but Copelin is looking forward to the career of another of her Dundeel daughters - her 2-year-old Alideel (purchased by Mark Minervini for $160,000 at last year's Classic) spelling after running a nice race at her debut in the Listed Woodlands S. at Scone last month.

“Torryburn is home to 55 well related mares and Copelin enjoys the process - one which she calls “daunting but fun” of deciding their mates each year.”

Plans which have been working very nicely for Torryburn, plans which may well again come to the fore at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

“There are big raps on her,” Copelin said, noting that there is another full sister to Mare Of Mt Buller on the horizon - the mare sold with a Dundeel filly at foot; purchased by the same connections (for $150,000) at this year's Perth Magic Millions.

Exciting Lazzago added to Inglis Digital June (Early) Sale

The Chris Waller trained G2 Sweet Embrace S. winner Lazzago (Capitalist) will headline next week’s Inglis Digital June (Early) Sale.

“Lazzago is a hugely appealing offering – she would have been amongst the standout lots at the Chairman’s Sale had she been offered there,” Inglis Digital’s Business Manager Nick Melmeth said.

“Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch inspected her over the weekend and said that she is a beauty, so it is very exciting for us to have the opportunity to offer a filly with a profile such as hers.”

Lazzago - a brilliant juvenile

The now 3-year-old filly won on debut at two, before running fourth to the recently retired Learning To Fly (Justify {USA}) in the R. Listed Inglis Millennium. At only her third start, Lazzago won the G2 Sweet Embrace S. and went to the G1 Golden Slipper where unfortunately she was hampered by Learning To Fly and was eased out of the race.

This season at three, she ran second in the G3 Peter Le Grand S. behind Estriella (I Am Invincible). A $460,000 purchase by Woppitt Bloodstock from Widden Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Lazzago is the second foal of tough race mare Lake Como (NZ) (Pins) who won seven races. Lake Como is a half-sister to dual Listed winner Taameer (General Nediym) the dam of stakes winning juveniles Khulaasa (Epaulette) and Bulbula (Shamardal) who is the dam of Group 2 winner Doull (Snitzel) and G3 Ottawa S. winner Aryaaf (Epaulette).

“She was a gorgeous yearling firstly and impressed Chris right from the early days,” Woppitt Bloodstock’s Debbie Kepitis said. “It was fantastic for her to win on debut pre-Christmas and then her Inglis Millennium performance and of course her G2 Sweet Embrace S. victory at just her third career start. She had some excellent form as a 3-year-old and has a pedigree with a lot more to give.

“The beauty of Inglis Digital is the timeliness of it. It’s brilliant that we can offer these high-class fillies and mares whenever we want to, right in time for the breeding season in this instance. In the earlier days we were stuck with certain timings, but now with the Inglis Digital platform, they’re noticed immediately all over the world.’’

Lazzago’s dam, Lake Como, has a 2-year-old named Lario (Epaulette) who ran second on debut earlier this season, while her Zoustar yearling colt was sold by Widden Stud to Tom Magnier for $800,000 at this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Quality race mares included

Several other quality fillies and mares have already been confirmed for the June (Early) Sale. “The likes of Swift Sweet, Perfect Gem, Langmore and Dalchini all provide fantastic opportunities for breeders to invest in quality, young breeding stock in advance of the breeding season,” said Melmeth.

“The June (Early) Sale is shaping as another incredibly strong catalogue, and we have some more major entries to announce in the next 24 hours which will further ensure attention on the catalogue will be intense.”

Swift Sweet (Snitzel) placed in the G3 Magic Night S. as a 2-year-old and is a half-sister to dual Listed winner Ballistic Missile (Smart Missile), while her dam is a half-sister to Group 2 winner and sire Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar).

“The June (Early) Sale is shaping as another incredibly strong catalogue, and we have some more major entries to announce in the next 24 hours which will further ensure attention on the catalogue will be intense.” - Nick Melmeth

Perfect Gem (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) is being offered in foal to in-demand young stallion Too Darn Hot (GB). A winner from eight starts, Perfect Gem has a yearling colt by Written Tycoon who was bought by Bjorn Baker, Avenue Bloodstock, and Jim Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) for $280,000 at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, and a weanling filly by Zoustar. Perfect Gem is a daughter of Group 1 winner Calveen (NZ) (Canny Lad).

Langmore (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Ruthless Dame (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) who was recently purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $2million as a broodmare. 3-year-old filly Langmore has placed twice from seven starts including running second on debut behind future Group 2 winner Impendabelle (Impending).

Dalchini (Flying Artie) is a multiple Group 3-placed filly with a Danehill-free pedigree. A winner, she has placed in the G3 Nivison S. behind multiple Group 1 winner Magic Time (Hellbent) and in the G3 Hawkesbury Crown behind Princess Grace (USA) (Karakontie {Jpn}) who placed twice at Group 1 level after that. Dalchini is a half-sister to Listed Canberra Cup winner Dark Eyes (Snitzel).

Sale dates

Entries for the Inglis Digital June (Early) Sale close at midnight on Wednesday. As has been the case the past three sales, the catalogue is shaping as another large one, so sellers are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible to ensure their place in the sale.

The sale will operate from this coming Friday (June 7) until the following Wednesday, June 12.

Learning To Fly retired

Annabel Neasham’s star filly, Learning To Fly (Justify {USA}) has been retired following a virus scare. The news was confirmed on Tuesday, by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier, who races the daughter of Justify (USA).

“She’s got a virus and it was a life saving job, she’s good now, but we’ve had a few close calls with her,” Magnier told SEN’s Gareth Hall.

“We’ve decided that we’re going to take her back to the farm and let her be a mum now.”

Melbourne Racing Club CEO resigns

Melbourne Racing Club CEO Josh Blanksby has resigned and will finish up on August 31. “My 10 years at the Melbourne Racing Club have been fantastic; being part of the transformation of the club as we have embarked on the Caulfield masterplan delivering $160 million in infrastructure for the Victorian racing industry, expanding the club’s gaming portfolio to ensure profits can be re-directed to racing and innovating the racing offering for our members and customers,” Blanksby told Racing.com on Tuesday.

“Our balance sheet and underlying business performance are strong and the current property rezoning processes will result in the club having further strength and optionality. I am most thankful for the life-long relationships I have formed with many people across racing and most importantly our wonderful staff at the club.”

“On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank Josh for his outstanding leadership and stellar contributions to the Club. Josh’s unwavering vision for the future made him an exceptional leader at MRC,” MRC chairman Matt Cain said.

Bella Nipotina might head to Stradbroke

Breeder and managing owner Michael Christian is taking each race at a time with Group 1 winner Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai). “From my perspective, and that of my brother Brad, who races the horse with me, for the last 12 months we've been thinking that every run she has could be her last, given her age and the number of starts she's had,” Christian told Racing.com.

Bella Nipotina

“I can't think of a sprinting mare that raced competitively as an October 2-year-old and now as a late 6-year-old, having had 50 starts, is racing arguably in career-best form at the elite level. We're guided by Ciaron (Maher) as to how long she continues to race and that will depend on her soundness and her form.

“We've already been tentatively approached for an (The) Everest spot, so that's in the back of our mind. The prizemoney is so good during the spring that's it hard to breed a foal that's going to make that sort of coin.

“If Ciaron thinks the Stradbroke is a viable option, that's where she'll run but if he doesn't, she won't.”

Sargent’s outsider ready to surprise in Oaks

Sydney trainer John Sargent will run $31 outsider Unique Ambition (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) in the G1 Queensland Oaks at Eagle Farm on Saturday. “We’re going up there to win,” Sargent told Racingqueensland.com.au about the filly who has won two of her eight starts.

“It’s a big step up for her but I’ve trained some good fillies over the years and she’s right up with the best of them. After the Oaks she’ll spell in Queensland then cruise through the spring with three or four runs before getting ready for the autumn next year.

“Her last run at Scone was very good but her two runs before that on heavy tracks at Randwick were hopeless. I was just waiting for a good track, and she produced it at Scone so away we go.”

Sargent trained 2012 G1 Queensland Oaks winner Quintessential (NZ) (Fast ‘n’ Famous) and he’s also won the 2013 G1 VRC Oaks with Kirramosa (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}), 2014 NZ Oaks with Miss Mossman (NZ) (Mossman) and the 2015 Australian Oaks with Gust Of Wind (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}), who was the last horse to beat champion Winx (Street Cry {Ire}).

Group 1 targets for Munce trained Aureus Angel

Despite a disappointing finish at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Chris Munce-trained Listed winner Aureus Angel (Turffontein) is still on track for her Group 1 targets this winter. “Aureus Angel had no luck...she got back in the race and was dominated by on-speed horses and really had a hard job to run them down, but she still ran well after a dynamic first-up run,” Munce told Racingqueensland.com.au.

“I’m still determining whether I run her in the Stradbroke or Dane Ripper Stakes or if I give her a month in between runs and just go straight to the Tatt’s Tiara.” Munce won the G1 Tatt’s Tiara last year with Palaisipan (So You Think {NZ}).

Group 1 runners will spell instead

The G1 Stradbroke H. lost another top weight with Tuvalu (Kermadec {NZ}) heading for a spell, while unbeaten 2-year-old colt Emirate (Extreme Choice) won’t head to the G1 JJ Atkins S. and will spell instead. “There will be no JJ Atkins for him, he's gone for a spell,” Yulong's general manager Vin Cox told racenet.com.au.

Vin Cox | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

“"He was very impressive winning on Saturday, and we have an interest in the second horse, Sovereign Hill, who we have a very high opinion of as well.”

Trainer Chris Waller will still have Mr Artemisa (The Autumn Sun) in the G1 JJ Atkins, a race he has won in 2010 with Pressday (Domesday), 2015 with Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) and 2018 with The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice).

Maragos trains first winner

Bendigo-based Annalise Maragos trained her first winner on Tuesday when $21 outsider My Heart (Fastnet Rock) won at Bendigo. “She came to me as a 5-year-old with just one start, so she needed experience to learn, and she did that today. She needed a long straight like this - she loves Bendigo,” Maragos told Racing.com.

“She's been a tricky little mare. She's hard to manage so I am just really happy to get the result for (owner/breeder) Jim (Middlemiss) as well. He's been such a big supporter of our stable. We are based in Bendigo, and we've got about 10 on the books at the moment. I have been working in racing here for about 10 years for different trainers, so it really good to get that first win on my home track, it means a lot.”

Dundeel juvenile wins on debut at Bendigo

Trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman’s 2-year-old colt Henlein (Dundeel {NZ}) will run on debut on Tuesday at Bendigo.

He is the third foal for Group 3 winner Time Awaits (Nicconi) whose first foal is triple Group 1 winner Magic Time (Hellbent) and second foal is the winning 3-year-old Cosmonova (Zoustar). Henlein was sold by Milburn Creek at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $300,000 to Freedman Racing and Julian Blaxland Bloodstock (FBAA).

Capitalist colt wins on debut at Bendigo

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained 2-year-old colt Reserve Bank (Capitalist) won on debut at Bendigo on Tuesday, smashing the field by 5.5l under jockey Luke Currie.

He is the second winner for winning mare Our Songbird (Fastnet Rock) who is a half-sister to Listed winner Corsaire (Anabaa {USA}) and Debonairly (Snitzel). MG Price Racing purchased Reserve Bank from Segenhoe Stud at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale for $410,000.

Contrail and King Kamehameha inducted into Japan Hall of Fame

Successful stallion King Kamehameha (Jpn) and Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) have both been voted into the Japan Racing Hall of Fame. “We are extremely grateful to have been selected as a JRA Commemorative Horse.

King Kamehameha's racing career was short, but he was able to have a place to play as a breeding stallion, which allowed his dream to continue for those of us involved. This award makes us even more emotional knowing that his bloodline has not died out and that his dream is still alive today,” Masato Kaneko told jra.go.jp. King Kamehameha won seven of his eight starts and at stud has 101 stakes winners including Lord Kanaloa (Jpn), sire of Group 1 winner and young sire Tagaloa.

“Contrail was a hero who brought a shining light to the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Kikuka Sho, where an undefeated triple crown was at stake, he was not a horse that could run 3,000 meters, but he never gave up the lead until the end. I couldn't stop crying at his incredible fighting spirit. And in his last race, the Japan Cup, I was happy as a trainer to be able to show his true strength to the fans. Being involved with such a historic horse has become an irreplaceable asset for Yahagi Stable. I can only thank owner Shinji Maeda, the North Hills staff, and all the fans who supported him,” said trainer Yoshihito Yahagi.

Horses are selected by a panel of 176 journalists who can vote for up to four horses, and horses must receive over 75 per cent of the 176 votes to qualify. King Kamehameha got 143 votes (81.3 per cent votes) and Contrail received 152 votes (86.4 per cent votes).

NZB Chairperson Joe Walls retires

New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) have announced the retirement of New Zealand thoroughbred industry leader Joe Walls (MNZM) from his role as Chairman of the NZB Board of Directors.

Walls started with the company in 1972, when it was known as Wright Stephenson’s, and as a world regarded auctioneer led the auctioneering team from the late ‘80s through to 2017. He steered the business as Managing Director from 1993 through to 2000, before presiding as Chairman from 2006 through to 2024.

“I extend my deepest gratitude on behalf of the NZB board, staff and the New Zealand breeders to Joe for his unparalleled wisdom and guidance throughout his tenure with us,” said NZB principal Sir Peter Vela will step into the role of Chairperson.

“He has shared in every challenge and success that the company has experienced in the past three decades since my brother and I bought the business, and it has benefitted greatly from his contribution. It has been a pleasure both professionally and personally to have had Joe as part of the NZB family, and he has earned an honoured place in the company’s history.”

From 2002 to 2005 Joe also served as Chairman of New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing, he was on the Board of New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing from 2011 to 2014 and, in 2018, he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the horse racing industry.

King’s Birthday Honours for pair of Kiwis

Two New Zealand racing identities have been given honours on this King’s Birthday weekend. Tony McGovern has been bestowed the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the racing industry, while Noel McCutcheon’s lifelong dedication to the racing industry was recognised as he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the thoroughbred and harness racing industries.

“I took over starting in 1991, but prior to that I had done 18 years on the starting gates, so I did a long apprenticeship,” McGovern told Loveracing.nz. “Jack Mudford was the starter at Ellerslie up until the early nineties and then he retired, and they asked me if I was interested in taking over his position. I had to apply and got the nod for Ellerslie and carried on there.” He also worked for the Hong Kong Jockey Club as a starter from 2003 to 2016. “Before I went to Hong Kong I was doing Waikato and Auckland, but now I am just doing Ellerslie, Ruakaka and Pukekohe, which keeps me in the game.”

McCutcheon has worked as a jockey, harness racing trainer and driver, chief stipendiary steward, and JCA race day committee member. “I rode three Derby winners – Mission in the South Australian Derby in 1965, a New Zealand Derby on Royal Duty in 1963 and another New Zealand Derby with Pep in 1968. I also won the Hawke’s Bay Cup and Awapuni Cup on Royal Duty,” McCutcheon told Loveracing.nz.

After retiring he trained harness horses before doing an apprentice as a steward. “…at the end of 1982 I was appointed a full stipendiary steward. In November 1989, they approached me and said they wanted me to be the next chief stipendiary steward. I commenced those duties on January 1, 1990, and I remained in that role until 2006.” Now semi-retired McCutcheon remains on the Judicial Control Authority helping with the appeals process.

Trio of well-bred 3-year-olds for Te Akau on Wednesday

Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson will have several runners on Wednesday including a trio of promising 3-year-olds, Bella Voce (Fastnet Rock), Akenehi (Fastnet Rock), and Malmaison (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}). The Te Akau operation is going through a transition period with the wet track and synthetic performers to fly the flag in the coming weeks.

“It’s a little bit quieter on the racing front, but there’s still plenty happening at home,” Bergerson said. “We have got a lot of the yearlings working through their early education and it’s good to spend some time with them. A lot of the horses who had big seasons and went out for breaks are slowly coming back in before the weather turns really nasty.”

Guineas winner Crocetti back in work for spring

G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winning 3-year-old Crocetti (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}) is back in work with trainers Danny Walker and Arron Tata with his initial aim being the G1 Tarzino Trophy. “I would like to think that it was reasonably dry to get to Hastings on the first day, but you are in the lap of the gods a bit there, so we will see how we go,” Walker told Loveracing.nz.

Crocetti (NZ) pictured with trainers Danny Walker, Arron Arron Tata, and owner-breeder Daniel Nakhle | Image courtesy of Race Images South

“Probably at some stage (he will head to Australia). There is not a lot here (New Zealand) in the spring for him. It would be nice to see him come up well and then make a plan from there.” Crocetti won his first seven starts in succession including the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, finishing his campaign with a second in the G1 Waikato Sprint going down by 0.2l to 5-year-old mare Bonny Lass (NZ) (Super Easy {NZ}).

Golden Sixty to stay in work for now

Trainer Francis Lui has kept his options open for Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) to run in December’s International meeting. “We’ll make a decision next season,” Lui told scmp.com.

“We’ll keep him light trotting, not fit but just exercising. Let him move for his joints and his bones. He’s physically great and mentally he really likes to race – he really enjoys it. I think the Hong Kong Mile is the main target if I decide to run him again. We’ll see, it’s no harm to give him a warm-up race as well.”

Winner of 26 of his 31 starts, Golden Sixty won the 2023 G1 Hong Kong Mile after a 224-day break. He also won the same race in 2020 and 2021 and was second in 2022.

City Of Troy awarded 127p by Timeform

City Of Troy (USA) (Justify {USA}) has been handed a Timeform rating of 127p following his Derby romp on Saturday, making him the fourth-highest rated of Aidan O'Brien's 10 Derby winners. Galileo (Ire) achieved the highest Timeform figure of 132 in 2001 while 2002 winner High Chaparral (Ire) was rated at 130 and Camelot (GB) at 128.

If City Of Troy heads to the G1 Irish Derby next, he’ll run into Derby fourth placed Owen Burrows-trained Deira Mile (Ire) (Camelot {GB}). “We'll see how he is through this week, but the Irish Derby could suit him, the nature of the track at the Curragh I think would suit him a lot better,” Burrows said.

Epsom crowd up on last year but down on pre-COVID figures

The crowd for the G1 Derby at Epsom was ‘around 27,000’ up from 25,413 in 2023, but down from pre-COVID figures of 38,044 in 2019 and 35,258 in 2018. 2022 saw 37,274 attendees when the Derby was part of Queen Elizabeth II’s official Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Epsom Derby

“It was the first ‘normal’ Derby in five years where we’ve not had a big increase in numbers up or down as a result of other factors. One of the changes we can see across sport is that once customers get out of the cycle of coming year-on-year you have to work hard to get them back,” Epsom course manager Tom Sammes told Racingpost.com.

TV viewing figures on ITV Racing are also falling from 1.6million in 2022, 1.5million in 2023, and only 1.3million 2024.

After the barrier draw was completed for Saturday’s G1 Belmont S. neither G1 Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (USA) (Goldencents {USA) or G1 Preakness S. winner Seize the Grey (USA) (Arrogate {USA}) were installed as the morning-line favourite for the 156th running of the last leg of the Triple Crown.

Sierra Leone (USA) (Gun Runner {USA}) was made the 9-5 morning-line favourite by New York Racing Association linemaker David Aragona when the field of 10 was unveiled. Sierra Leone will start from post position nine. “It's fine,” trainer Chad Brown said.

“He has drawn outside versus being a little further inside (two post) than I wanted in the Kentucky Derby. I like that for a horse that's favoured. Flavien (jockey Prat, who is riding Sierra Leone for the first time) should be able to survey the inside into that first turn and, hopefully, pick his spot. It will come down to whether he has a clean trip and runs his 'A' race on Saturday.”

Fun With Flags added to Arqana digital sale

Listed winner and Group 3-placed Fun With Flags (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who boasts an entry in the G1 Prix de Diane, will add major intrigue at the Arqana pop-up sale next Monday. Trained by Jerome Reynier, Fun With Flags has won three of her four starts, and was only beaten a little over 2l in the G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud last time.

Unbeaten Hot Darling to be sold

The unbeaten 2-year-old filly Hot Darling (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) will be offered in a pop-up sale via Tattersalls Online on Wednesday, June 12, the auction house announced on Monday. She has won both her starts including the Listed Prix des Reves d'Or at Vichy over heavy ground in her second start on May 15.

“Hot Darling is a filly that will only keep improving, has an extremely good temperament and we definitely have not seen the best of her,” said Amy Murphy.

“Hot Darling has been entered for the G3 Prix du Bois on Oaks Day at Chantilly but also has the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot as an option. We are only going to see her improve from here on in and we are very much looking forward to lining her up wherever she runs next.”

Looking Ahead - June 5

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Wednesday, including a beautifully-bred Zoustar filly chasing maiden success on debut and an I Am Invincible colt having his second start battling it out at Warwick Farm, and a nicely related Justify (USA) filly having her second start at Sandown after running well for third on debut.

Warwick Farm, Race 2, 12.50pm, AEST, Drinkwise Plate, $100,000, 1100m

Silver Wedding, 2-year-old filly (Zoustar x Summer Sham {Not A Single Doubt)

The well-related Silver Wedding (Zoustar) is set to make her debut over 1100 metres for Ciaron Maher on the back of two educational trials where she has finished fourth and fifth at Warwick Farm and Rosehill respectively.

Silver Wedding is the second live-foal from the Not A Single Doubt mare Summer Sham. She was the winner of the G2 Angus Armanasco S., on the track and has had success as a broodmare already leaving Schwarz (Zoustar) who has won the G3 Hawkesbury Guineas and the Listed Amanda Elliot H.

Schwarz himself was a $1,250,000 purchase by the Rosemont-Victorian Alliance/Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA)/David Redvers Bloodstock from the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Keeping up the big yearling results from the mare, Silver Wedding sold for $800,000 at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale with Cambridge Stud being the successful purchaser from the draft of Widden Stud.

Silver Wedding’s third dam is the Giant’s Causeway (USA) mare Unspoken Choice, she herself is a half-sister to the late Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice and Group 1 winners and stallions Manhattan Rain and Platinum Scissors.

Silver Wedding holds an interesting pedigree pattern, duplicating the great stallion Redoute’s Choice 3 x 3, her sire Zoustar is out of a Redoute’s Choice mare and her dam is by Not A Single Doubt, who is a son of Redoute’s Choice.

Summer Sham since producing Silver Wedding has produced yearling and weanling full-brothers by Zoustar and she was served by the super stallion Zoustar again last spring.

Warwick Farm, Race 2, 12.50pm, AEST, Drinkwise Plate, $100,000, 1100m

True Amor, 2-year-old colt (I Am Invincible x My True Love {Fastnet Rock)

True Amor, a son of Australia's Champion Sire I Am Invincible, will have his second start at Warwick Farm for John O’Shea on Wednesday. This comes on the back of a very impressive trial win at the Rosehill track on May 2 over 900 metres and then an okay fourth at Warwick Farm on debut on May 23 when only fading late in the piece after working a bit hard early behind Equipage (Lonhro).

True Amor is the second foal from the Fastnet Rock mare My True Love, who was a three time winner and also placed in the G2 Dane Ripper S., and the G3 Sunshine Coast Guineas. She has so far produced Miss Amore (Pierro) who has been a winner over 1200 metres to kick-start her breeding career.

Further back in the pedigree page are the Group-performers Lectrice (Encosta De Lago), Leica Guv (NZ) (Deputy Governor {USA}), Light Fantastic (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Whatalovelyday (Domesday) who is the dam of the recent Group 1 victor Benedetta (Hellbent) who was successful in the G1 Goodwood S.

True Amor was a $550,000 purchase by Kitchwin Hills from the draft of Lustre Lodge at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

My True Love, since producing True Amor, has left a yearling filly by Capitalist and a weanling colt by Written Tycoon.

Sportsbet Sandown Lakeside, Race 1, 12.25pm, AEST, Sportsbet Nobody Does It Easier P., $100,000, 1400m

Fontaine Rouge, 3-year-old filly (Justify {USA} x Fontein Ruby {Turffontein})

The Ciaron Maher-trained Justify (USA) filly Fontaine Rouge will be having her second start at Sandown on Wednesday. On debut at Cranbourne she ran a solid third when she made very good ground late from back in the field, the step up to 1400 metres looks ready made for her.

This well-bred filly is out of the Turffontein mare Fontein Ruby, who was a six-time winner from 1200 metres to 2000 metres including the G2 Edward Manifold S., G3 Caulfield C., and the Listed Alexandra S.

She holds a very interesting pedigree-pattern being by a son of Johannesburg (USA) in Justify and out of a mare that is a grand-daughter of Johannesburg through Turffontein. This gives Fontaine Rouge a 3 x 3 male cross of the son of Hennessy (USA) in Johannesburg.

She has also been successful at stud leaving two individual winners including the stakes-winner Parure (Fastnet Rock) who won the G2 Autumn C., and the winner Steamboat Rock (Fastnet Rock).

Fontein Ruby is also a half-sister to The Mitigator (Master Of Design) who was a nine-time winner including the G1 Thorndon Mile and the G3 Eagle Technology S.

Other top-level stakes performers in the family include Palumbo (Sebring), Cardinal Gem (Choisir), Infinite Grace (Prince Of Birds), Total Attraction (Nadeem) and Pretty In Pink (Sebring).

Since Producing Fontaine Rouge, Fontein Ruby has produced a two-year-old gelding named Straffan (I Am Invincible), a yearling filly by I Am Invincible, a weanling filly by Home Affairs and was served again by Home Affairs in the spring.

Fontaine Rouge was a $500,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
