Julia Ritchie acquires $1.3 million Zoustar share on Inglis Digital Sale

7 min read
In a monumental event for the Inglis Digital Sale, a share in the highly-sought after Zoustar captured plenty of attention. Offered publicly for the first time, the share fetched an impressive $1.3 million, secured by Bangaloe Stud. The sale, offered by Qatar Bloodstock, highlighted Zoustar's current theoretical value at an extraordinary $78 million.

The recent Inglis Digital Online auction, concluding on Wednesday, witnessed 303 lots (70 per cent) out of 431 finding buyers, with 128 lots (30 per cent) passing in. The auction generated a total gross of $4,665,420 with Lot 227 claiming the highest sale price at $1.3 million. The average recorded was $15,397, with a median price of $4,000.

Zoustar share tops sale

At the most recent Inglis Digital sale, a share in the highly-coveted Zoustar commanded attention as Julia Ritchie's Bangaloe Stud secured it for $1.3 million. Sharing the limelight with reigning Champion Sire I Am Invincible for current season stakes winners, Zoustar has produced notable Group 1 winners this season, including Zougotcha, Joliestar, Climbing Star, and Ozzmosis. With an impressive track record of siring 54 stakes winners and 41 stakes-performing 2-year-olds, Zoustar's allure remains unwavering.

Bangaloe Stud’s Julia Ritchie was delighted to win the fierce bidding duel which she described in a press release as "my absolute upper limit".

“I was always prepared to go close to that price and in the end he’s worth it, every penny of it,’’ Ritchie said.

“That said, that was my absolute upper limit, I didn’t really have another bid in me but I think it’s worthwhile to be able to become involved in a superstar stallion like Zoustar".

Fully booked for the 2024 breeding season, the acquisition of the share ensures access to the highly sought-after stallion, regardless of his booking status. Priced at $275,000 (including GST), Zoustar's upcoming season book is already fully subscribed, matching the highest advertised fees in the country alongside I Am Invincible and Extreme Choice.

“I was always prepared to go close to that price and in the end he’s (Zoustar) worth it, every penny of it.’’ - Julia Ritchie

The offered share represents a 1/60th stake in the Zoustar stallion syndicate, entitling the shareholder to priority access annually and a share of the pooled income from nominations sold each year.

A fantastic result all round

David Redvers, Manager of Qatar Bloodstock, expressed satisfaction with the $1.3 million price-tag, stating it aligned with expectations and was a fantastic result for both buyer and seller.

“Without expecting it to happen, I think it's where I hoped he'd land. When you do the sums, it makes sense. I think it represents good value for the buyer and is equally a good result for the seller. So I would imagine both parties are happy, Redvers told TTR AusNZ.

“He's a stallion that has it all in front of him, he’s much younger than the other leading sires in Australia and his yearling sale results this year prove that he’s got his best crops now coming through".

To put this into context, Zoustar’s yearlings averaged $475,000 at this season's yearling sale circuit and he had seven $1m+ yearlings in total this year.

“He’s only going to continue to rise so it could be that it'll end up looking like a very good deal for the buyer in the not too distant future”, Redvers elaborated.

As for the Inglis Digital platform, Redvers couldn’t speak more highly of it stating, “We had absolutely top class service from Sebastian Hutch in particular, who took charge of this and informed us right the way through.

“It was a very straightforward process and from an integrity point of view it was faultless so I couldn’t recommend it (Inglis Digital) highly enough," Redvers concluded.

A unique offering

Sebastian Hutch, Inglis Bloodstock's CEO, hailed the unique offering of equity in Zoustar telling TTR AusNZ, “it’s yet another first for the digital platform to be able to offer equity into a stallion with that sort of profile and obviously it's the first share in the horse that that has been offered for public auction.

“The equity in the horse is typically terribly tightly held so for Sheikh Fahad it was a pretty fantastic result. The response to it was really incredible, the volume of people who expressed an interest or made enquiries about the share was overwhelming and it ultimately achieved a price that the buyer was delighted with.

“I think there’s a lot of winners out of that whole experience, it gives the buyer an opportunity to get involved in a 13-year-old stallion that's almost inevitably going to be the future champion sire of Australia.

“It gives the existing equity holders in Zoustar a massive boost demonstrating the value of their share and I think it reasserts the reasons why people are confident in our market and quality bloodstock across various profiles of stock", Hutch elaborated.

The former Champion First, Second and Third crop sire continues to go from strength to strength and according to Inglis Digital is “a stallion destined to be Champion Sire of Australia in years to come.

“I think there are a multitude of reasons why it was so popular. He is six years younger than I Am Invincible and eight years younger than Snitzel which gives context to how well Zoustar has done to be as competitive as he is with those stallions at this stage of his career.

“It gives the existing equity holders in Zoustar a massive boost demonstrating the value of their share and I think it reasserts the reasons why people are confident in our market and quality bloodstock across various profiles of stock.” - Sebastian Hutch

“Should he go on to enjoy a healthy, fertile future for an extended period of time, whether it's four, six, eight years, the opportunity for buyers to reap a significant dividend from him for an extended period of time was a huge factor into the appeal.

“There is a very real possibility that horses like Zoustar are going to go further up in fee from where they are and I think that was a significant part of the appeal for people looking to invest as well”, Hutch elaborated.

Positive results across the board

Despite the high-profile filly Lazzago (Capitalist) being passed in at $800,000, the sale witnessed numerous positive outcomes. Notably, Zoustar's own 4-year-old son, Zamborghini, fetched the second-highest price of $135,000, secured by Paul Smith. This lightly raced gelding boasts an impressive record, having won four of his 11 starts and finishing third at Mornington’s metropolitan meeting on Monday.

Additionally, the well-related Fastnet Rock mare Rockaroo, offered on behalf of Cannon Hayes Stud (as agent), was acquired by RF Bloodstock for $105,000. This young mare carries a cover to Darley’s leading first-season sire Too Darn Hot (GB), the sire of the G1 Champagne S, winner Broadsiding. With four foals to her name, her yearlings have commanded prices of up to $240,000.

Another noteworthy sale was that of the lightly raced Single Benefactor (Not A Single Doubt), purchased by Baystone Farm for $105,000. This winner from just seven starts is a daughter of the esteemed Houston Benefactor (Encosta De Lago) who is a three-quarter sister to Princess Coup, the dam of Argentia (Frankel {GB}), The Wizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice), and Moesha (I Am Invincible).

Words of Wisdom: Susan Archer

8 min read
In the fourth of The Thoroughbred Report's series talking to some of the most successful figures in Australasian racing and breeding, we had a chat with Arrowfield’s Communications Manager Susan Archer who has accomplished much as a media professional and breeder.

An integral part of the Arrowfield Stud team since 2010, Susan Archer has been a racing fan since childhood, achieving the rare dream of breeding one of the best horses ever to race in Australasia.

What advice would you give to a 20-year-old just starting out in racing today?

“I would tell them what I wish someone had told me at that age - that it is important to sit down and write down what you want to be doing at 30 and think hard about the training, the skills and the experience you will need to get there.

“I would tell them what I wish someone had told me at that age - that it is important to sit down and write down what you want to be doing at 30 and think hard about the training, the skills and the experience you will need to get there.” - Susan Archer

“And to think about the people you want to work with and learn from - choosing the right people sets you up for your career and for your life.

“And I'd say do the same thing again at 40, 50 and 60! I learned a lot from people older than me and now I am learning from people younger than me - and I love that.”

Are there any figures in the racing industry who you feel deserve more recognition for their contribution?

“I have strong views on this - it's the people with thoroughbred industry experience, knowledge, courage and vision, who love the sport, know exactly what they want to achieve and are thoughtful and constructive challengers, prepared to ask hard questions and spark thorough debate and discussion on industry committees and boards. Unfortunately, they are often shut out of governance roles precisely because of those attributes, and we end up with highly qualified but passive head-nodders who achieve little or nothing.

“Over the last 20 years or so we've had this trend of going outside the industry for board members who don't really know, or care deeply about racing and breeding.

“I’m sure they are well meaning and want to do a great job, but this is a very deep, complex industry and we need people who are courageous and passionate and ready to get stuck into the job without needing a year or two to figure it all out.

This is a very deep, complex industry and we need people who are courageous and passionate and ready to get stuck into the job without needing a year or two to figure it all out.” - Susan Archer

“I have no doubt that we can learn from other industries and other sports and can benefit from skills from other areas, but too often boards – and not just in racing - fill up with people who are simply not equipped to make a real, positive difference to the industries they lead.”

What has been the biggest obstacle you faced in your career?

“When I was young there was a complete absence of a clear career pathway into racing and breeding. Especially for a racing- and breeding-mad girl from a small town in Southland, New Zealand who wanted to write about horses rather than ride them!

“As a result I didn’t really begin my thoroughbred industry career until I was in my 30s, and in some ways that was a good thing, but I would love to have started earlier.

“I grew up in a racing and sporting family, my parents bred and raced horses, we were always going to the races and I loved it. I read the New Zealand sales catalogues from cover to cover and when I was 13 and I began writing a tipping column for the local paper. However, there was just nowhere for that enthusiasm or interest to go in the 1970s.

Susan Archer

“I think that the current older generations are more aware of the need to encourage young people and it’s wonderful how many more opportunities there are now. Organisations like Godolphin Flying Start and Thoroughbred Industry Careers, and a number of breeder-supported scholarships have created career frameworks that help young people – and their parents - find their way in racing and breeding.”

Can you share a story that had a lasting impact on you?

“The parental stories I grew up with gave me a love of teamwork, competition and achieving very big goals.

“At the age of seven my father Robin decided that he wanted to be an All Black and beat the Springboks.

“And he achieved that, becoming All Black No. 563 and playing in the great 1956 series against South Africa. He had a 14-year career in first class rugby - a sport he profoundly loved and understood.

Susan's father, Robin Archer was a former All Black

“My mother Muriel’s sporting passion was basketball. She played in a national title-winning team, coached championship teams and was the president of the local basketball association.

“She led an amazing group of volunteers who built their own stadium - obtaining loans, raising funds and building it in 1975 – an incredible achievement that allowed the sport to blossom and thrive in our community.

“Both my parents showed me that you can have big, hairy ambitions, and that you can make them happen. Muhammad Ali was right!”

“Both my parents showed me that you can have big, hairy ambitions, and that you can make them happen. Muhammad Ali was right!” - Susan Archer

Referring to his famous quote: “Impossible is just a word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

A decision made by her parents also proved fateful for Susan: the $12,000 purchase as a yearling of the two times winning stakes placed McAngus (NZ) (Alvaro {GB}).

“Mum and Dad realised soon after that she traced back to a full sister to Phar Lap and my dad said 'one day we will breed another great champion from this family.’”

Another impossible dream fulfilled - McAngus producing the stakes placed Songline (NZ) (Western Symphony {USA}) who is, of course, dam of one of the true greats of the Australasian turf - the mighty Sunline (NZ) (Desert Sun {GB}).

Bred by Susan and her husband Michael Martin.

Quite the contribution but there was another. The couple, as managers & members of the Fencourt Farm Partnership, also bred the Group 2-winning mare Triassic (NZ) (Tights {USA}), dam of So You Think (NZ).

Four G1 W.S Cox Plates between those two horses - quite a record!

What person influenced your career the most?

“I have to name five people who have been especially influential in my career.

“My first boss Don Ellis owned a small publishing company where I started when I was 20, staying for three years. He encouraged creativity and embraced innovation, and each month he got me to write down all the costs we’d incurred and all the sales we’d made. It was great training in the basics of business.

“Arthur Ormond (president of the NZTBA) was one of those people unafraid to confront the critical issues, he had a bold vision for the whole industry and remains the best chairman New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing never had. It was he who employed Michael (who ended up working for the association for 23 years, 21 of those as chief executive) and me at the NZTBA, and I will always treasure the years we worked together.

Arthur Ormond

“Adrian Clark gave me a shot at Trackside TV and he was terrific to work with - incredibly supportive. We hosted the first live coverage of a yearling sale anywhere in the world and he also had me presenting the Ford Report (a New Zealand version of 'Bred To Win.')

“John Messara rang me one day in 2010 and said he had a job for me in Sydney. I have been at Arrowfield ever since - he makes every day exciting, stimulating and challenging and he’s the most exceptional human being I’ve ever met, full stop.

“And then there’s my fabulous husband Michael. When John offered me a role at Arrowfield I was unsure about taking a position in Australia but Michael just said - 'do it, you will regret it if you don't.’ I think Michael is now as much an Arrowfielder as I am!

“He’s encouraged me in everything I have done both within, and outside of racing, and I’ll always be grateful to Sunline for fulfilling so completely our dream of breeding a great racehorse together.”

Hutch looks forward to Great Southern Sale, anticipates vendors will meet the market

8 min read
Thursday sees the opening day of the Inglis Great Southern Sale with a strong catalogue of weanlings making their way through the ring, joined on Friday by broodmares and racing fillies. The Thoroughbred Report had a chat with Inglis' Sebastian Hutch about his expectations for the sale.

It was 12 months ago that the Inglis Great Southern Sale saw a record-breaking weanling make her way through the ring, a flashy daughter of Frankel (GB) and Vedema (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire]) fetching $825,000 - the most ever paid for a weanling in the southern hemisphere.

This year's sale may not reach those heights but Frankel is again represented - by Rosemont Stud's filly (Lot 7) out of the imported Group 3 winner Abby Hatcher (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

“We are blessed to have a number of stallions represented in this sale who we would not normally have,” said Inglis CEO Sebastian Hutch, pointing out that along with Frankel there are weanlings by several other high class proven sires such as I Am Invincible, Snitzel, Written Tycoon and Zoustar.

Along with weanlings by “a good selection of young stallions.”

“We have very nice foals by Pinatubo (Ire), Home Affairs and Stay Inside - all stallions who have been in great demand with buyers,” Hutch said.

Strong first season sire representation

Those three headliners are part of a group of exciting first season sires with weanlings being showcased, the others being Aclaim (Ire), Acrobat, Captivant, Delaware, Extreme Warrior, Palace Pier (GB), Portland Sky, Profiteer, Tiger Of Malay, Victor Ludorum (GB) and Wild Ruler.

“The response to the catalogue has been very encouraging,” said Hutch - “people seem to like what they see there.”

Which is good news for Hutch who said that “we worked hard to put together a strong catalogue with a variety of vendors and pedigrees,” noting that 67 more youngsters go under the hammer than did last year.

He is however cautious, noting that the racing (and general) economy is a tad on the nervous side this year - “we are very conscious under the circumstances, with the market being a bit softer this year, that vendors will have to try to find the right mark and meet the market.”

Despite that, the top end of the weanling market has been “unexpectedly strong this year,” Hutch noting that “turnover in Sydney and at the Gold Coast was almost identical to last year with 23 less horses offered.”

“As anyone who has been to those sales knows,“ he continued, “the demand is very strong for quality foals. It is a bullish market for those horses perceived to meet the right criteria for next year's yearling sales as well as for end-users.”

A pin-hooking paradise

Pin-hookers at last year's sale fared well with results including a Zoustar x Donelle (Not A Single Doubt) filly who was purchased for $280,000 - selling at Easter for $500,000, an $80,000 Toronado (Ire) x Reward For Glory (Reward For Effort) colt who fetched $270,000 at the Melbourne Premier and a $40,000 Justify (USA) x Bank On This (Lope de Vega {Ire}) who was sold at the Classic for $180,000.

“It has been a good sale for pin-hookers,” Hutch said, “and also for racetrack results.”

“It has been a good sale for pin-hookers... And also for racetrack results.” - Sebastian Hutch

A number of Group 1 horses have emerged from this sale - such as Montefilia (Kermadec {NZ}) who was secured for $62,000, Behemoth (All Too Hard) for $120,000, Sopressa (So You Think {NZ}) for $70,000, Extra Brut (Domesday) for $52,000, Gytrash (Lope de Vega) for $70,000 and On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau) for $60,000.

Hutch is hopeful of improving on last year's clearance rate of 71 per cent clearance, encouraging both local and interstate buyers to buy - noting that 95 per cent of the weanlings are either VOBIS Sires eligible or BOBS eligible.

Weanlings out of stakes winning mares

The Frankel filly is one of a number of well related weanlings out of stakes winning mares with other highlights in this regard being Lot 17, Stockwell Thoroughbreds' Pierro colt out of the G3 Vanity S. winner Alzora (Redoute's Choice) - a full brother to the triple Listed winner Sacramento.

The outstanding Singapore based mare Better Life (Smarty Jones {USA}) has Lot 42 in the Rosemont draft, a daughter of the reliably classy Nicconi. Springmount offer one of the sale's big ones - Lot 262 being a son of Snitzel and the G3 Typhoon Tracy S. winner Ms Catherine (Shooting To Win).

Strong drafts

Shadowbrook Bloodstock also have a couple of nice ones including Lot 340, a Home Affairs filly out of the dual Group 2 winner Serena Miss (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}). Lot 267 being sold by Armidale Stud is one of the catalogue highlights - a Home Affairs colt out of the dual Listed winner Mystic Pursuit (Needs Further) who is a three-quarter sister to Mystic Journey (Needs Further).

Yulong has Lot 372, a Maurice (Jpn) colt out of the G1 Del Mar Matriarch S. winner Stormy Lucy (USA) (Stormy Atlantic {USA}) whilst Gilgai have Lot 245, a Russian Revolution colt out of the G1 Vinery Stud S. winner Mirjulisa Lass (Danasinga). Another good draft is that of Stonehouse Thoroughbreds who have with Lot 282, a Wootton Bassett (GB) filly out of the G1 Flight S. winner Oohood (I Am Invincible).

Meanwhile Burnewang North Pastoral - who broke the records with their Frankel filly last year - offer Lot 423, a filly by the popular Toronado (Ire) out of the imported Listed winner Wonderful World (Ity) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}).

Siblings of stakes winners

Also of interest are siblings to such Group winners as Need I Say More (No Nay Never {USA}) - Lot 43 by Pinatubo (Ire), Allergic (Street Cry {Ire}) - Lot 52 by Lucky Vega (Ire) and Soul Patch - Lot 150 by Shamus Award.

Lot 349 meanwhile is out of the terrific producer Silverbeat (Distant Music {USA}), dam of the G2 Kewney S. winner Bella Martini (Stratum), the G2 Autumn Classic winner Upbeat (Strategic), the six times Listed winner Volcanic General (Magnus) and the Listed Adelaide Guineas winner Alpha Beat (Magnus).

Also worth a mention is Lot 275 is a Stay Inside colt whose five times winning dam Northern River (Ad Valorem {USA}) is a half-sister to the stakes placed Berimbau (Shamardal {USA}) - dam of Imperatriz (I Am Invincible).

Marvellous mares

With the increasing popularity of online sales, the broodmare section of sales like this is getting smaller but there are still some nice girls up for grabs on Friday afternoon.

Such as daughters of Redoute's Choice, Lonhro, Fastnet Rock, Snitzel, Tavistock (NZ), Zoustar, Savabeel, So You Think (NZ), More Than Ready (USA), Sebring, Not A Single Doubt, High Chaparral (Ire), Toronado (Ire), Exceed And Excel, Street Boss (USA) and Written Tycoon.

And they have been served by a group of popular stallions such as Toronado, Tassort, The Autumn Sun, Wootton Bassett (GB), Pierata, Pierro, Spirit Of Boom, Zousain, Shamus Award, Jacquinot, Ole Kirk, Pinatubo (Ire), Blue Point (Ire), Artorius, Fierce Impact (Jpn), Earthlight (Ire), Yes Yes Yes, Ghaiyyath (Ire), Captivant, Harry Angel (Ire), Written By and Russian Camelot (Ire).

Stakes winners Belsielle (Brazen Beau), Chilled (Shalaa {Ire}), La Amistad (a Redoute's Choice half-sister to Makybe Diva {GB} (Desert King {Ire}) and Rocket Commander (Court Command) are looking for new homes as are a number of proven producers.

Such as Alzora (Redoute's Choice), the dam of the triple Listed winner Sacramento (Pierro), Cailin Miss (Domesday), dam of the G3 Kevin Hayes S. winner La Mexicana (I Am Invincible), Personal Guarantee (Danzero), dam of the Listed winner Plutocrat (Rich Enuff) out of a half-sister to Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ)

Inglis forums proving popular

Oaklands Junction hosted a forum on “all things weanling” on Wednesday evening with speakers such as Suman Hedge and Bruce Slade. Hutch is happy with how these informal educational get togethers have been accepted.

“They are proving really popular and they are a lot of fun,” he said, looking forward to Inglis organising more discussions like this in future.

Another non-sale service on offer has been the stallion parades with stud managers making the most of the audience on hand - “it is a great opportunity go showcase the new stallions and this has been very popular over the last few years,” Hutch said.

Millionaire Easter graduates dazzle at the midweeks

7 min read
The opening two races of Kensington’s midweek card showcased some remarkable parallels. Both winners were $1.3 million purchases from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales, both were sired by Australia’s reigning Champion sire, I Am Invincible, and both have powerhouse China Horse Club as part of their ownership.

Cover image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

The much-anticipated debut of I Found You (I Am Invincible), a half-sister to Deep Field and Shooting To Win, delivered in spades, while moments later, expensive colt Braveheart (I Am Invincible) secured a dominant victory.

Blue-blood filly shines on debut

China Horse Club’s $1.3 million investment in I Found You at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale might just be a masterstroke. Co-bred with Cressfield Stud, Michael Smith of her outright owner, China Horse Club described the filly as "probably the best individual that the mare had produced since Deep Field and Shooting To Win."

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly was making her eagerly anticipated debut following two eye-catching trials. Under the guidance of James McDonald, the filly jumped on terms before gaining a prominent position just behind the leaders. When popped the question at the top of the straight, the valuable filly gave a strong kick to run out a three-and-a-half length winner over the well-related Fiorenza (Kingman {GB}) and Bella Corazon (I Am Invincible).

Speaking after the race, a relieved co-trainer Peter Snowden told Sky Racing, “She’s been like a little Christmas present under the tree, we’ve been waiting for three weeks to open it”.

“She’s a filly that’s only going to get better, she’s still a bit immature as you can see she’s not a big filly but she’s starting to fill out and furnish now so I’m sure the autumn will be when you see the best of her.

“We’ll probably give her another run or two now just to give her a good education and grounding but in six months that’s when she’ll be really ready”, Snowden elaborated.

Jockey James McDonald is all too familiar with the family, having piloted Shooting To Win home in the G1 Caulfield Guineas and Deep Field early in his career.

“She’s (I Found You) a filly that’s only going to get better, she’s still a bit immature as you can see she’s not a big filly but she’s starting to fill out and furnish now so I’m sure the autumn will be when you see the best of her.” - Peter Snowden

Speaking to Sky Racing after the race, McDonald was equally enthused, stating, “The performance speaks for itself.

“She’s taken a bit of a blow afterwards so I'd suggest there’s plenty of improvement in her. She’s a really well educated, racy type of filly that will shoot through the grades”, he elaborated.

A future foundation mare

While she has a long way to go before recouping her $1.3 million price-tag, the blue-blood filly is on her way and, better yet, possesses enormous residual value. The filly is the seventh winner from as many to race from her dam Listen Here (Elusive Quality). A stakes-winning juvenile herself, Listen Here was a $150,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale purchase 18 years ago. Fast-forward 10 years, and her value rocketed 22 times her yearling sale price when fetching $3.4 million at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale to the bid of China Horse Club and Bruce Perry on behalf of Cressfield Stud.

At the time of purchase, her first foal, Group 2 winning sprinter Deep Field, was entering his second season at Newgate Farm, while her G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win was also commencing his second season at stud at Darley. Since under the care of China Horse Club and Cressfield Stud, Listen Here has produced four foals for as many winners, including two million-dollar yearlings, such as this filly and Monte Invincible (I Am Invincible), who fetched $1.05 million at the 2021 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. The 17-year-old mare is no doubt in the twilight years of her career, so the purchase of I Found You was a shrewd investment to perpetuate China Horse Club's association with the family's success.

As Michael Smith describes, “She’s going to be a foundational mare for China Horse Club. It’s a wonderful family. I Am Invincible is looking like he’s going to be a great broodmare sire and I think she’s got plenty of racing upside.”

Listen Here has a Zoustar weanling colt on the ground who Smith describes as a “very good colt who is very forward and imposing” and was served by Russian Revolution last October.

Braveheart brings Vinnie running-double

Yarraman Park graduate, Braveheart handed I Am Invincible his 225th juvenile winner on Wednesday with a dominant victory against older horses at Kensington. The $1.3 million Inglis Easter Yearling Sale acquisition for the China Horse Club / Newgate / Go Bloodstock / Trilogy syndicate handed his trainers Peter and Paul Snowden a running double on the card.

Under the guidance of Tommy Berry, the valuable colt stepped away fairly but his natural speed quickly had him paving a way to find the leaders back. Taking an inside run, he quickly put pay to the rest of the field and ran out a strong winner by almost a length on the line to fellow million dollar Inglis Easter Yearling Sale graduate and full-relation to Russian Revolution, Everybody Rise (Snitzel).

Much like the filly’s division winner, co-trainer Peter Snowden told Sky Racing that the best is yet to come for the full-relation to stable favourite King Of Sparta (I Am Invincible).

“He’s done a good job, he’s still a bit immature. We really liked him as a yearling but he just went through a spurt there and went plain and lost a little bit but he’s on his way again now.

“It’s good to see him come off that last start where he improved a lot from the run, we thought that in his work and he’s shown that again today.

“I think he can go on with it, I’m sure he’ll be better on top of the ground. The family is much better on top of the ground but it's good to see him win like that, it's a good result.”

“It’s good to see him come off that last start where he improved a lot from the run, we thought that in his work and he’s shown that again today.” - Peter Snowden

The trainers and owners know the family all too well with this colt a full-relation to stable favourite and Newgate / China Horse Club syndicate purchased and owned King Of Sparta (I Am Invincible) being the sixth foal from the Group 3 winning mare, Octavia (Holy Roman Emperor {IRE}). An earner of over $3.5 million in prize money, King Of Sparta is a dual Group winner and two-time Magic Millions feature race winner and Smith can see many parallels between the pair .

“As far as the physical goes, we thought he was one of the standout yearlings at the sale. Just like King Of Sparta, he’s taken a bit of time to put it together so in a way, there's no surprises there, but it was great to see him put the pieces together today and show that he is a progressive horse that has more to offer”, Smith told TTR AusNZ.

China Horse Club is focused on heavily investing in its proven families, with the team purchasing the duo’s half-relation Aviemore (Written Tycoon) at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Broodmare Sale for $380,000. A three-time winner, including a win as a juvenile, Aviemore produced a filly foal by Street Boss (USA) in 2022, before missing to Zoustar and Wild Ruler last season and is currently in foal to I Am Invincible.

Braveheart is the youngest living foal from Octavia, who missed to I Am Invincible last year after her 2022 foal by I Am Invincible died after birth. She is due to foal a full-relation to Braveheart and King Of Sparta later this year.

I Am Invincible continues dominance

The victories were part of a stellar day for I Am Invincible, who also saw success with the promising 3-year-old colt Invincible Shield. Trained by Tony Gollan, Invincible Shield secured his second consecutive win at Doomben. This colt, a $480,000 purchase for Baystone Farm at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the Yarraman Park draft, is the second foal from the unraced Pierro mare Pierro Moss, who hails from the same family as Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and Najmaty (I Am Invincible).

Tassie champ draws one for Stradbroke

Tassie champion The Inevitable (Dundeel {NZ}) had his task of a first Group 1 victory made slightly easier following Tuesday night’s barrier draw for the $3 million Stradbroke Handicap. “I like Craig Newitt being onboard, a strong rider at that weight, and I think he ticks a few boxes the horse,” said Scott Brunton told Tasracing.com.au. Brunton is in Queensland with the horse on behalf of regular trainer John Keys.

“We were rapt with his first-up run, and he really pulled up well out of it. I’m confident he will acquit himself well, and he certainly meets a few of the horses he raced against last time better at the weights.”

McDonald to ride Broadsiding in JJ Atkins

Champion hoop James McDonald will ride Godolphin’s Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in the G1 JJ Atkins Plate on Saturday. “He’s proven to me he’s the type of horse now that he thrives on the travel, thrives on the pressure, he loves campaigning, he’s really enjoyed his time in training and he’s matured an incredible amount since he began his racing prep this time through,” trainer James Cummings told Racingqueensland.com.au.

“I think that’s going to bode really well for the horse next season - it just gives him an opportunity to learn a little bit more about what he’s doing. For 2-year-olds to be stretched in their stamina, it doesn’t happen a lot in our racing season and Broadsiding needed to really be able to capitalise on that later in the 2-year-old year so that’s what he’s doing so nicely.”

McDonald rode a treble on Wednesday at Kensington on 2-year-old filly I Found You (I Am Invincible), Art Volant (Flying Artie), and Pure Alpha (NZ) (Ardrossan).

Benedetta looking for The Everest next spring

Trainer Jason Warren is hoping Benedetta (Hellbent) will earn a slot for the $20 million The Everest at Randwick in October if the tough Victorian mare wins the G1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday. “There’s been some interest already from some slot holders for The Everest and if she’s offered a slot then she’ll spell immediately after the Stradbroke and have one run before The Everest,” Warren told Racingqueensland.com.au.

“Joe Pride has shown in previous years with Think About It and Private Eye that horses that run well in the Stradbroke are up to The Everest.”

Godolphin pleased with good draw for Vilana in Stradbroke

Godolphin’s Vilana (Hallowed Crown) picked up gate 14 in the G1 Stradbroke barrier draw held at King George Square in Brisbane, firming into outright favouritism at $5 as of Wednesday morning. “He’s perfectly fit, he dropped back in distance to win that Moreton Cup and he steps back up to the seven furlongs in the Stradbroke in good shape,” trainer James Cummings told Racingqueensland.com.au.

Vilana | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“He pulled up amazing…he was licking his lips coming off the track this morning looking good. We’re satisfied to accept with a horse on the backup and we’d like to give the horse another opportunity to see if he can go a little closer. In previous years, I’ve had the horse a bit fresher coming out of races a few weeks beforehand, but I think this year it’s the right thing to do to make a change with Vilana and try to stimulate that big Group 1 performance out of him.”

Maloney looking for next upset in JJ Atkins

Fresh from delivering one of the great Queensland Oaks upsets, jockey Ryan Maloney seeks a similar boilover in Saturday's G1 J.J. Atkins S. at Eagle Farm on Bosustow (Blue Point {Ire}). “It would be great to deliver for Rosemont as they have been very supportive of my career,” Maloney told Racing.com.

Bosustow was a $900,000 purchase by the Rosemont Alliance, Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA) and Annabel Neasham at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Segenhoe Stud. A last start winner, he is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}). Suman Hedge was also the purchaser of G1 Queensland Oaks winner Socks Nation (Sioux Nation {USA}).

Pharari makes it two in succession

3-year-old filly Pharari (American Pharoah {USA}) won again at Ballarat on Wednesday by 5.75l to take her record to two wins from four starts with both wins coming in her most recent runs. “That wasn’t a bad race and she’s done that quite easily. It wasn't a race that I thought she was a moral, so to speak, but she proved me wrong. Very exciting horse going forward,” jockey Ethan Brown told racing.com.

Pharari will run in next month’s Listed Creswick S.

Vella team success at Ballarat

Having just his second ride for the year, Steven Vella made a welcome return to the winner's stall at Ballarat on Wednesday aboard promising 3-year-old Demojo (Denman), who is trained by his wife Kylie. “He's got the ability, we added the visors after his last trial, we felt that he just wasn't concentrating in the trials. That looks like they did the job,” Kylie Vella told Racing.com.

Treble for Gollan at Doomben on Wednesday

Leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan trained a treble at Doomben on Wednesday with Perigean (Extreme Choice), Invincible Shield (I Am Invincible) and Blackmax (Brazen Beau).

Milnes responds to premiership claims with treble

Rochelle Milnes continued her late season charge at the South Australian Jockey Premiership with a riding treble at Morphettville on Saturday. “It’s really hard to talk about how much I appreciate the support from my bosses,” Milnes told Racingsa.com.au on Wednesday.

“It’s unbelievable, I can't thank them enough. The (Racing SA Apprentice) Academy, Dean (Pettit) and Briony (Moore) and the support (from trainers). I ride work for Stokesy Tuesday mornings, I’ve really been rewarded for that.” Her treble was on Lake’s Folly (Pierro), Brave Star (NZ) (The Bold One {NZ}) and Morris Minor (Valentia).

The Velvet Queen to farewell in Group 3

Consistent mare The Velvet Queen (Universal Ruler) is set to end her racing career in Saturday’s G3 Strickland S. at Belmont Park. “I imagine she’d probably go on the market after Saturday’s event,” trainer Darren McAuliffe told TABradio.

“If you want a successful broodmare, you can’t go racing them until the end of the earth. Her full brother (The Velvet King) was a successful racehorse in some of these winter races as well and I think it would be fair to call time on her career.”

The Velvet Queen has won seven of her 24 starts with earnings over $600,000 and is a group placed city winner.

Hong Kong owners watch juvenile win

Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray-trained 2-year-old gelding Target Audience (NZ) (Derryn) won on debut on Wednesday for his Hong Kong owners. “He’ll be going up to Hong Kong, the horse was vetted after his last trial and the money came through this week,” Ritchie told Loveracing.nz.

“He’s obviously a very smart horse and he can only get better. He was pricking his ears throughout the race and can only improve. We’re not 100 percent sure if this qualifies him, so he may have to have another start here and his ringcraft will be much better if he does. If he doesn’t, then job done, and he goes to Hong Kong and hopefully performs well and flies the New Zealand flag and they come back and buy some more.”

Target Audience was the second winner from Derryn’s third crop.

Zoulander aimed at lucrative series

Riccarton trainer Michael Pitman is hoping Zoulander (NZ) (Zoustar) will qualify for a lucrative polytrack target during Riccarton’s Grand National Festival of Racing in August following his win at the synthetic track on Wednesday. “He won nicely and he is not a front-runner. It was an outstanding ride by Kylie (Williams), she just used her initiative, there was no pace on, and went to the front,” Pitman told Loveracing.nz.

“We are trying to get him ready for the $100,000 1200m polytrack race on the middle day of the Grand National Carnival. He is just a genuine racehorse. From the first day we had him I have said to a lot of people that he reminds us so much of El Chico. He has now won seven races, he is very honest and has done a good job.” Zoulander has won seven races and placed 14 times in 57 starts with earnings over NZ$163,000.

British Horseracing Authority CEO resigns

Julie Harrington is to leave her role as chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) at the end of this year. In a statement issued by the BHA on Tuesday, Harrington, who has been in the role for three and a half years, said, “With so much now in place to develop and grow the Industry Strategy, which will secure a brighter future for British horseracing, it felt like the right time to move on and let someone else steer the sport through its next exciting phase.

“It has been a huge privilege to lead the BHA during what has been a period of real change as the sport has developed and implemented shared strategies for a sustainable future, and an ability to speak with one united voice.”

Countdown to Royal Ascot begins

The G1 St James's Palace S. is shaping up to be one of the hottest races at Royal Ascot this year and both Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) and Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) received positive reports from their respective trainers on Tuesday as they prepare to try and topple Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the day one highlight.

Trained by Charlie Appleby, Notable Speech heads the ante-post betting for the St James's Palace following his striking success in the G1 2,000 Guineas, but Richard Hannon has not given up hope of reversing the form with his Newmarket runner-up Rosallion, who confirmed himself a high-class colt when going one place better in the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh last time.

O’Brien team for Ascot includes exciting juvenile

O'Brien confirmed that Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is firmly on course to try and regain the G1 Gold Cup crown he won in 2022, while two of the stable's Classic winners from last year, G1 Derby hero Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and G1 St Leger scorer Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), are set to run in the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. and G2 Hardwicke S. respectively.

Aidan O' Brien

The trainer also outlined plans for his team of juveniles at the meeting, with Camille Pissarro (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) set to be tasked with trying to provide the Ballydoyle team with a record-extending eleventh win in the G2 Coventry S. on day one.

Royal Ascot runners added to London Sale

The catalogue is now live for the Goffs London Sale, which takes place in association with Privat 3 Money on Monday, June 17 at Kensington Palace Gardens. A late addition to the sale is the G2 Prix de Sandringham heroine Sparkling Plenty (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) (lot 11), who is due to run in Sunday's G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly, while a pair of two-year-old winners trained in Ireland–Jessica Harrington's Rock N Roll Rocket (Ire) (Far Above {Ire}) (lot 13) and Michael O'Callaghan's Evening Saigon (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}) (lot 21)–have also been added as possible runners at Royal Ascot.

The full catalogue–which also features breeding rights to Ardad (Ire) (lot 1) and Havana Grey (GB) (lot 3)–is available here, with Goffs reporting that there is potential for a select number of additional entries to be added over the coming days.

US trainer ordered to pay wages

The U.S. Department of Labor has obtained a court order requiring trainer Steve Asmussen to pay US$243,260 (AU$367,600) in back wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages after its investigation found the employer's pay practices denied 163 grooms and hotwalkers at Churchill Downs and at Keeneland racetrack of overtime wages, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Labor Tuesday.

The recovery is the latest action brought by the department since 2021 against KDE Equine LLC, operating as Asmussen Racing Stables with about 200 horses in five states. This is the fifth time in recent years that investigations by the department's Wage and Hour Division found the company violated federal labour laws.

Looking Ahead - June 13

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track throughout Australia on Thursday, including a promising Lonhro gelding running at Wyong. Also at Echuca a So You Think (NZ) gelding is on debut and a Written Tycoon filly looks ready to win her maiden after showing some form in previous starts.

Wyong, Race 7, 3.50pm, AEST, Industree Group Mdn P., $42,000, 1200m

Presides, 3-year-old gelding (Lonhro x Moderate {Commands)

Godolphin’s head-trainer James Cummings will prepare the well-bred gelding to have his third start at Wyong on Thursday. In his first two starts he has run a solid fourth on debut at Cranbourne in December and resumed for a very nice second at Gosford over 1100 metres on May 16 behind the progressive gelding Ready To Shine (NZ) (Better Than Ready).

Presides is by the former Darley Stud’s top class stallion Lonhro out of the Commands mare Moderate, she was a speedy mare on the track winning four races including one as a juvenile and then the Listed Lexus Hybrid P.

Moderate has already tasted some solid success at stud leaving the talented filly Pin Sec (Lonhro) who won the G3 Black Opal S., the three-time winning filly Arbitration (Street Boss {USA}) and the three-time winning gelding Restrained (Lonhro).

Other successful stakes performers in the family include Gradual (Strategic), Hopon Harry (Rebel Raider), Rass Dancer (Rassendyll {USA}) and Rass Brightia (Bellotto {USA}).

Since producing Presides, Moderate has a two-year-old gelding by Impending named Referees who is unraced, a weanling filly by Palace Pier (GB) and was most recently served by Darley Stud’s exciting young stallion Pinatubo (Ire).

Echuca, Race 1, 12pm, AEST, Think Water 3YO Fillies Mdn P., $37,500, 1300m

Tuscan Storey, 3-year-old filly (Written Tycoon x Tuscan Sling {Danehill Dancer {Ire})

Tuscan Storey, a daughter of Yulong Stud’s super stallion Written Tycoon, will be having her fourth start for Pakenham trainer’s Peter G Moody and Katherine Coleman after running two good placings in her only two starts last preparation and then an improving fourth first-up at Werribee on May 17 over the shorter distance of 1108 metres.

The well-bred filly is the first foal from the Danehill Dancer (Ire) mare Tuscan Sling, who was a seven-time winner including the G3 Geoffrey Belmaine S, G3 Mannerism S and the Listed Christmas S. Tuscan Sling has left two other winners in Cannon (Written Tycoon) and Tuscan Sun (Cable Bay {Ire}).

Written Tycoon | Standing at Yulong

Tuscan Sling’s dam Firenza (Kenny’s Best Pal) was a Listed winner of the Walter Brown S, and has ended up a very consistent producer leaving nine foals to race of which all have been winners.

Many top class performers feature in this pedigree including Assertive Approach (Akeed Mofeed {GB}), Kiwia (Reset), Outlaws Revenge (Reward For Effort), Written Beauty (Written Tycoon), Immortal Love (Snitzel), Hi World (High Chaparral {Ire}) and Loveyamadly (Bel Esprit).

Tuscan Sling since producing Tuscan Storey has left a two-year-old unnamed colt by Zoustar, a weanling filly by Toronado (Ire) and was not served last spring.

Echuca, Race 2, 12.30pm, AEST, Murphy’s Turf & Landscaping Mdn P., $37,500, 1300m

Best On Ground, 3-year-old gelding (So You Think (NZ) x Felicienne {Al Maher})

The Mitchell Freedman-trained So You Think (NZ) gelding Best On Ground will be making his debut at Echuca on Thursday over 1300 metres. He has trialled up four-times in preparation for his debut including his last trial when he run third at Stawell May 22 over 1000 metres behind Not So Common (NZ) (Tivaci).

This gelding is the fourth foal out of the Al Maher mare Felicienne, who was a five-time winner including the G3 Schweppervescence Trophy.

This family has some top-level performers a bit further back including Dylanson (Dylan Thomas), Candide (NZ) (Sound Reason {Can}), Nadeem, Marju Snip (NZ) (Marju {Ire}), Do Ra Mi (NZ) (Savabeel), Unique Jewellery (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and Kingdoms (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Felicienne’s further progeny include a two-year-old colt by So You Think, a yearling filly by Churchill (Ire), a weanling filly by Tarzino (NZ) and was most recently served by Rich Hill Stud’s Satono Aladdin (Jpn).

Best On Ground was a $300,000 purchase by Mitch Freedman Racing from the draft of Merricks Station at the 2022 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Looking Back:

I Found You (I Am Invincible) was super impressive winning on the Randwick-Kensington track, she looks very progressive and is one to follow.

Los Alamoss (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) was disappointing at Ballarat running seventh.

Sacredarro (USA) (Arrogate {USA}) was scratched, he will keep for another day.
