Race-Day Recap

Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) was flawless in winning the G1 Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm on Saturday. The victory in the final Group 1 of the 2023/24 season capped an outstanding preparation.

Tony Gollan’s Princess Rhaenys (Iffraaj) was able to defeat a tenacious Deny Knowledge (Pride Of Dubai) in the Listed Gold Crown at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

In-form jockey Angela Jones, fresh off winning last Saturday’s Listed Ipswich Cup added another stakes winner to her record, partnering the consistent Cottee (Merchant Navy) to success in the Listed Tattersalls Mile.

Chris Waller’s Group 2-placed Cigar Flick (Churchill {Ire}) won her fourth career victory on Saturday, outclassing a field of fillies at Eagle Farm.

Trainer Joseph Pride and Proven Thoroughbreds have a good record of producing progressive horses and look to have another on their hands with the 3-year-old filly In Flight (Flying Artie), who won her fourth race from eight starts on Saturday at Rosehill.

Bella-extraordinaire

What more can be said about the extraordinary Bella Nipotina? (Pride Of Dubai) Few horses display more determination and heart than the Ciaron Maher-trained 6-year-old.

When most would be calling for a time-out, this ‘Iron mare’ has continued to thrive and incredibly improve. After carrying 56kg in the G1 Stradbroke H. and narrowly losing to Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard), who had 50kg on her back, Maher admitted he was looking for reasons not to run Bella Nipotina in Saturday’s G1 Tattersall’s Tiara. However, he could only find reasons to run the 6-year-old.

With Craig Williams out of the country providing humanitarian aid in war-stricken Ukraine, the pressure landed on Ryan Maloney's shoulders. Maloney had tasted Group 1 success earlier in the carnival on the Ciaron Maher-trained Socks Nation (Sioux Nation {USA}).

It was an easy watch for the connections and legion of fans of Bella Nipotina. Stamping her class, she defeated her consistent stablemate Semana (Winning Rupert), while the imported Bubble Rock (USA) (More Than Ready {USA}) finished third.

The G1 Tattersall’s Tiara is the third elite-level victory for the daughter of Pride Of Dubai and her second this preparation, having won the G1 Doomben 10,000 in May.

“What more can be said about the extraordinary Bella Nipotina? (Pride Of Dubai) Few horses display more determination and heart than the Ciaron Maher-trained 6-year-old.”

Maher was nearly lost for words in his admiration for Bella Nipotina. He told 7HorseRacing, “Ryan looked like he was in control pretty well the whole way. That’s the feeling she gave me leading into Saturday. I came up here on Friday and we galloped her.

“I looked for a reason not to run her, but I actually thought she was better, and that’s how she raced. She was dominant, she’s very consistent, very tough. But I’ve just got a great team. Ryan rode her well; we’ve been mates since we both started in racing. It’s just great. Thanks to Tony Gollan, who we stay with in Queensland. His team has been fantastic.

“Bella just keeps presenting in this sort of form, and that’s not for no reason. She’s been racing essentially every two weeks and arguably has been racing as well as her first start in Queensland. It’s a massive team effort.”

Maher also shared that The Everest is high on the agenda for Bella Nipotina in the spring. “We’re definitely looking at The Everest. I think she’s in career-best form. The sprinters have thinned out, and she’s a mare in form. We won’t give her too long out. We’ll just tick her over in Queensland, give her a couple of weeks off, and work back from The Everest, probably have a run before it. That’s her goal.”

Bella Nipotina was a $80,000 purchase by Lindsay Park Racing, Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) and Mt Hallowell Stud from the draft of Rosemont Stud at the 2019 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Bred by Sarconi Thoroughbreds, Bella Nipotina has won nine races and over $10.9 million in prizemoney. Additionally, she is the 10th Group 1 winner for the Ciaron Maher stable this season.

In form Princess denys Knowledge

It was the in-form Princess Rhaenys (Iffraaj {GB}), who was able to claim a well-deserved stakes victory in Saturday’s Listed Gold Crown at Eagle Farm. The 6-year-old mare, trained by Tony Gollan and ridden by the interstate hoop Blake Shinn, was able to deny the aptly named Deny Knowledge (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai) in the $200,000 contest.

Princess Rhaenys had been racing in good heart, winning a BM90 last start over 1810 metres and finishing fourth in a Group 3 at Doomben earlier in her preparation. However, it was no easy task to defeat Deny Knowledge, who was having her first run for Anthony and Sam Freedman in the Yulong colours after being sold to the Panthalassa Syndicate for $500,000 in May at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Gollan told Racing News and Sports, “She’s so much better when she can get a more genuinely run race where she can really relax and get off the bridle and finish off. You can see early on that wasn’t going to be the case.

“She stepped really well, and they just took an eternity to cross her. I was really worried in the run to be perfectly honest. I like her better when she can get smothered up and relaxed, and that never happened. I was always worried about the leader (Deny Knowledge). When we eventually got her down, it was a good result for the team.”

The daughter of Iffraaj (GB) was a $460,000 purchase by Peachester Lodge when presented by Glastonbury Farm at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She is the 99th stakes winner worldwide for her sire and the fourth foal from the O’Reilly (NZ) mare Orinda (NZ), who is also the dam of her full brother, Jon Snow (NZ), a victor of the G1 Australian Derby and the G2 Tulloch S.

“She’s (Princess Rhaenys) so much better when she can get a more genuinely run race where she can really relax and get off the bridle and finish off.” - Tony Gollan

Princess Rhaenys has won six races and has placings in the G3 Pam O’Neill S., the Listed Silk Stocking S., and was fourth in the G1 Vinery Stud S. Orinda has an unraced 2-year-old by The Autumn Sun named Flaming Genesis. She foaled a colt by Home Affairs and was served by Coolmore’s Best Of Bordeaux.

Cottee nabs Star

Cottee (Merchant Navy) clinched a Listed victory in Saturday's Tattersall’s Mile at Eagle Farm, thanks to a well-timed ride by the in-form Angela Jones under the guidance of trainer Mark Currie.

The 4-year-old mare defeated the hot favourite, Iknowastar (Star Witness), and the consistent Maracana (NZ) (Shamexpress {NZ}) over 1600 metres.

Jones, who recently won the Listed Ipswich Cup aboard Red Wave (Red Dazzler) trained by Tony and Maddysen Sears, expressed her gratitude: “Big thank you to Mark Currie, he’s been a big supporter of mine and actually gave me my first winner,” she told 7HorseRacing.

“So, it’s fantastic to win a stakes race for him. It’s also great for the owners, Basil Nolan; we know how important it is for these mares to get black-type on their records. I couldn’t be more thrilled. Also, biggest thank you to Cottee for not winning while I was suspended. She’s such a pleasure to ride and gives her all every time.”

Cottee had been in solid form this preparation, with two fourth-placed finishes in her last starts and a 1.8l defeat in the Listed Wayne Wilson S. on Stradbroke H. day. The daughter of Merchant Navy was purchased for $20,000 by Ciaron Maher Racing from the draft of Coolmore Stud at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

“Big thank you to Mark Currie, he’s been a big supporter of mine and actually gave me my first winner.” - Angela Jones

She marks the third stakes victory for Merchant Navy, now standing at Kooringal Stud. Notably, all of the stakes performers by the G1 Coolmore Stud S. and Royal Ascot winner have been fillies: Royal Merchant, winner of the G1 Goodwood H., G2 Magic Night S. winner Steel City, Group 3-placed Merchant Queen, and Drisana, who also placed in Group 3 company.

Cottee is the first foal from the Bernardini (USA) mare Rudd Not Too (NZ), a six-time winner including the G2 Rich Hill Mile. Rudd Not Too was initially a $220,000 purchase by Go Racing at the 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock National Sale, later fetching $500,000 at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale when purchased by Go Bloodstock and Paul Moroney Bloodstock.

Rudd Not Too has had ups and downs, losing a colt by Snitzel but seeing her filly by Fastnet Rock sell for $480,000 at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She foaled a colt by So You Think (NZ) and returned to the Coolmore-based stallion in the spring.

Jones capped Saturday, winning the Tony Gollan-trained Zarastro (I Am Invincible) in the G3 Healy S. Despite his double-figure odds Zarastro easily accounted for Ghaanati (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Hatchet (Worthy Cause).

It was the eighth victory for the son of Yarraman Park Stud’s Champion Sire I Am Invincible, with success in the Listed Falvelon H. and the Listed Recognition H. earlier in his career. Initially a $1.05 million purchase by Chris Waller Racing and Guy Mulcaster Bloodstock from the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he was moved on in 2022 through the Inglis Digital October Sale where Tony Gollan Racing paid $32,500.

Zarastro is the first live foal from the G2 Light Fingers S. winner Adrift (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}). She has unraced gelding by Merchant Navy named Helmsman, and a 2-year-old filly by Seascape (I Am Invincible), who won at Gosford. Adrift’s colt by I Am Invincible was purchased for $1.15 million by Kia Ora, TFI, Kestrel Thoroughbreds and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott Racing at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Adrift was served by Coolmore ‘s Wootton Bassett (GB) last spring.

Cigar smokes rivals

Classy 3-year-old Cigar Flick (Churchill {Ire}) won for the second time this preparation on Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained filly lined up in the $150,000 Tattersalls Life Members QTIS 3YO Fillies Plate at Eagle Farm with Tommy Berry in the saddle and was a 1.5l winner over the local runners Navyonthehighway (Merchant Navy) and Pure Paradise (Capitalist).

Waller’s stable representative Brett Killion told Racingnews and Sports, “That horse up front going lickety-split helped. Cigar Flick’s win has been on rain-affected tracks, so it was a slight concern how she would be and how the track would be here today. Tommy (Berry) plotted a nice path up the inside and was very strong late.”

Berry added, “There was very good speed. She was out of her comfort zone, so I just had to leave her where she was and bank on the beautiful finish that she’s shown in her last few starts. She obviously enjoys getting her toe into the ground, but even though it’s a Good 4 (Eagle Farm), there’s still a bit of give in it.”

Bred by Ingham Racing, Cigar Flick carries the instantly recognisable cerise silks. She has won four races and was placed in the G2 Reisling Stakes as a 2-year-old. Cigar Flick is the first foal from Palmateer, a three-time winner by Fastnet Rock. Palmateer is a half-sister to the outstanding Fangirl (Sebring), whose eight victories include the G1 King Charles III S., the G1 Winx S., and the G1 Vinery Stud S..

Palmateer lost a foal by So You Think (NZ) but has a yearling filly by Flying Artie and foaled a filly by Street Boss (USA) before visiting Justify (USA) last spring.

In Flight takes off

Progressive filly In Flight (Flying Artie) won her fourth race from eight starts (including two placings) at Rosehill on Saturday. The Joseph Pride-trained In Flight, ridden by Jay Ford in the 1100-metre 3-Year-Old BM72, had enough in hand to hold off a charging Disneck (Trapeze Artist), while Eye Of The Fire (Epaulette) was third.

In Flight was placed on debut at Wyong last November but quickly improved to win at Gosford in her following start. She was spelled after finishing second at Kembla Grange behind Spring Lee (Zoustar).

Returning at Gosford, In Flight won again on the Heavy 8 track before a sixth-place finish behind Saturday’s Brisbane winner Cigar Flick (Churchill {Ire}). She then bounced back to win at Rosehill in her last start.

The daughter of the Royal Ascot-producing sire Flying Artie was a $220,000 purchase by Proven Thoroughbreds and Pride Racing from the draft of Goodwood Farm at the 2022 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

In Flight is the sixth foal from the Listed-winning Stravinsky (USA) mare Waveline (USA), who is also the dam of the Listed-placed Waimea Bay (All Too Hard). Waveline foaled a colt by Rebel Dane and returned to the Golden Slipper-producing sire in the spring.

Race-Day Recap

Femminile provided Dundeel (NZ) his 30th stakes winner with a jaw-dropping performance in Saturday’s Listed Oaklands Plate at Morphettville Park.

Annabel Neasham’s progressive colt Depth Of Character became the 33rd stakes winner for his retired sire, Deep Field and the latest stakes winner from his outstanding family.

First Settler (Written Tycoon) was an impressive debut winner at Caulfield on Saturday, prompting co-trainer Mick Price to indicate targets like the G1 Coolmore Stud S. could be on the calling card for $750,000 colt.

D’Argento has made an encouraging start to his stud career with his first runners. The Bowness Stud-based stallion sired his fourth individual winner on Saturday with his debutant son Bitten By Barry, winning at Newcastle.

Blue Diamond S.-producing sire, Royal Meeting sired his third individual winner when his daughter Take A Bow, showed too much speed on debut to win at Gatton on Saturday.

Headwater is enjoying a fantastic season with his 2-year-old runners, and on Saturday sired his 12th Australian individual juvenile winner with the Scott Darby-bred Ride The River at Newcastle.

Despite being sent out at odds of $71, Gary Doughty’s 2-year-old Snowy Finn (Yes Yes Yes) defeated his stablemate to become the third winner for The Everest-winning sire.

Dupont, a NZ$800 purchase from the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Online Yearling Sale returned his purchase price instantly with a debut victory at Ruakaka on Saturday.

Stokes' filly comes from the clouds

It was a jaw-dropping performance from the Phillip Stokes-trained Femminile (Dundeel {NZ}) in Saturday’s Listed Oaklands Plate at Morphettville Parks. Sixth on debut at Sandown-Lakeside earlier in June, Kayla Crowther partnered the filly for her second start on Saturday, where they were sent out at odds of $26.

The consistent Colmar (Strasbourg) looked to have the 1400-metre feature in his keeping but was tiring. However, he appeared to have done enough to hold off all challengers except one, with Femminile figuratively coming from the clouds alongside the grandstand side of the track to nab Colmar. Finishing third was Bushann (Stratum Star).

Stable representative Tommy Stokes told Racing.com, “I’m not sure if it was Kayla’s (Crowther) plan (to come from off-pace) but I think being slow away probably forced her hand. She’s a filly with a stack of ability.

“Femminile seemed to handle the ground okay (Heavy 8). Full credit to the Pakenham team and my dad (Phillip Stokes); she arrived two days ago, and we’ve just kept her happy. She’ll go to the G3 Sires’ Produce S. (July 20) then we’ll probably tip her out.

“It really was super. We’ll see how she pulls up, but I’d think she would be hard to beat in the Sires’.”

“It really was super. We’ll see how she (Femminile) pulls up, but I’d think she would be hard to beat in the Sires.” - Tommy Stokes

Crowther added, “There was no real plan. Tommy (Stokes) said just get some cover, and when she was slow away, like she was on debut, there was no stress to get cover. I wasn’t giving her a very good steer coming to the turn, and I was outside Harry Grace; he was really intent on getting to the outside and sort of karted me there.

“The outside fence probably hasn’t been galloped on, so it really wasn’t that bad. I couldn’t believe it halfway down the straight; she absolutely flew. I can’t believe she won from where she was. She pulled up not blowing at all; she’s really, really classy.”

Femminile is the 30th stakes winner for Arrowfield’s brilliant Dundeel (NZ). The filly was a $150,000 purchase by Phillip Stokes Racing and Rick Connolly Bloodstock from the draft of Vinery Stud at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Tommy Stokes

She is the first foal from Femme Fireball, a seven-time winner by Pierro. Femme Fireball, a daughter of the Fastnet Rock mare Subtitle, is a full sister to the Group 3 and Group 1-placed Rock.

Femme Fireball’s Bivouac filly was sold to Bennett Racing for $140,000 at this year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She foaled a filly by Darley’s Pinatubo (Ire) and was served by So You Think (NZ) last spring.

Character digs deep

Eagle Farm’s Tattersall’s S. was a test of endurance over 1400 metres, and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s beautifully bred Steel Strike (Exceed And Excel) showed plenty of grit to hold off Maili (Yes Yes Yes). However, Steel Strike ultimately had no answer for Annabel Neasham’s Depth Of Character (Deep Field), ridden by Tom Sherry.

Depth Of Character was an impressive winner on debut at Canterbury in May over 1250 metres. He then travelled to Brisbane, where he was placed in the Listed Oxlade S. behind Megastar Heart (Star Turn) and Embassy (I Am Invincible) over 1300 metres.

Sherry told 7HorseRacing, “I’ve had a lot to do with Depth Of Character. I won his maiden on him, and I rode him two weeks ago in the Listed Oxlade S.. He’s progressed every time I’ve sat on him. He’s got a lovely attitude, a great demeanour. I think he will improve in six months' time and will definitely get a mile.”

Commenting on the race, Sherry said, “It was a bit muddling there mid-race, but credit to him, he held his composure. When he got balanced up, I felt very confident he’d get them, and he’ll keep progressing.”

The handsome colt, bred by China Horse Club Racing, was presented by The Chase at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where Annabel Neasham Racing paid $180,000. Depth Of Character is the 33rd stakes winner for the pensioned Deep Field and is the second foal from Caricature (NZ) (Power {GB}).

“He’s got a lovely attitude, a great demeanour. I think he will improve in six months' time and will definitely get a mile.” - Tom Sherry

Caricature won over 1600 metres and was placed in the G3 Lowland S. and the Listed Taranaki RC Oaks Prelude before running fourth in the G1 New Zealand Oaks. The daughter of Power (GB) was a NZ$600,000 purchase by China Horse Club at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

Caricature is a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Pussy Willow (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and her Listed-winning, Group 1-placed full sister Pussy O’Reilly (NZ). Additionally, Caricature is related to the recent Group 3 winner Positivity (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}), who was also placed in the G1 New Zealand Oaks.

Caricature’s first foal, Llanddwyn, a winner, is a full sister to her stakes-winning brother. She lost a foal by Exceed And Excel, before foaling a filly by Zoustar and was served by Russian Revolution last spring.

First Settler: A rising star in Price and Kent Jnr’s stable?

An injury that delayed the start of First Settler's racing career may have been a blessing in disguise for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr. Their smart colt, a son of Written Tycoon, made a successful debut at Caulfield on Saturday.

Carrying the bottle green silks of Yulong, First Settler marked himself as one to watch for upcoming spring assignments with a dominant win in the 1000-metre event for 2-year-olds. This race included the last-start winners Blue Renegade (Blue Point {Ire}) and Landmark (Nicconi).

Partnered by Michael Dee, First Settler surged to the lead on a track rated as Good 4 but on the downgrade. Dee noted, “It felt in the soft range, and on a firmer track, he would have been more explosive.” Finishing 2.25l behind First Settler were the Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans-trained Landmark and Husk (by Calyx {GB}).

Co-trainer Mick Price told Racing.com, “The last 200 metres when First Settler put the foot down on the gas, you say, ‘What’s there?’ but I breathed a sigh of relief when he took off!

“It was good because he’s a Written Tycoon colt, and they have a bit of a think about things sometimes, but the last furlong was beautiful. I’m not sure what I’ll do with him; I’ll need to see how he pulls up. But you get these nice colts, so you’ve got to try and win the right races, don’t you? I don’t want to go too deep on him into the winter, and I need to put a circle around some nice races in the spring for him.”

“It was good because he’s a Written Tycoon colt, and they have a bit of a think about things sometimes, but the last furlong was beautiful. I’m not sure what I’ll do with him.” - Mick Price

Initially, First Settler was due to debut in the Listed Debutant Stakes in the spring at Caulfield but was fractious in the barriers, causing him to be scratched at the gates. Price explained, “The barrier boys were good; they were all over it for today (Saturday). They all knew what they needed to do and wanted to help the horse. He was a bit stiff in the spring; he put his leg on the ledge, and fair enough, they scratched him, but there’s nothing wrong with the horse.

“He then had to have a slither of bone out in one knee, but he’s a solid horse, he’s sound, has a good brain, and has a lot of ability.”

Replying to the Racing.com host, Price quipped, “When he wins the Coolmore (Stud Stakes).” This indicates that the 1200-metre 'stallion-making' sprint at Flemington is on the cards for First Settler. The son of Written Tycoon was a $750,000 purchase by Yulong and Mick Price Racing and Breeding from the draft of Baramul Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

First Settler is the third foal from the Street Cry (Ire) mare Graciousness, who won over 1600 metres and comes from a distinguished family. She is a half-sister to the Group 1 winner and Group 1-producing sire Casino Prince and is from the family of dual Group 2 winner Best Of Bordeaux and Prince Fawaz, who won the G1 JJ Atkins Stakes.

Graciousness, already a proven producer, is the dam of the Listed Twilight Glow S. and Silver Eagle victress Vienna Princess (Snitzel). Her second foal, Cordiality (Zoustar), is also a winner, with First Settler giving her a perfect strike rate.

A Snitzel half-brother to First Settler was passed in for $250,000 at this year’s Magic Millions National Yearling Sale. Graciousness foaled a colt by Zoustar before returning to Arrowfield’s four-time Champion Sire Snitzel.

Fourth winner for D’Argento

Bowness Stud’s promising first-season sire, D’Argento, sired his fourth individual winner on Saturday at Newcastle. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Bitten By Barry was on debut in the 1300-metre 2-Year-Old Maiden, after catching the eye in two trials at Rosehill.

Ridden by Brandon Lerena, the gelding was a 1.2l winner over the favoured Manos (by Snitzel), while Scoundrel (by Pierata) was third. Bitten By Barry is the fourth winner for D’Argento, a Group 1-winning son of So You Think (NZ).

Alongside his four winners, D’Argento has sired two stakes performers in Rag Queen and Silva ‘N’ Suave. D’Argento will stand the upcoming season at $16,500 (inc GST). Bitten By Barry was a $35,000 purchase by Best Gait Racing from the draft of Bowness Stud at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The gelding is the ninth foal from the retired Commands mare You’re Dreamin, who is a half-sister to the Listed winner Power Of Pegasus (by Palace Music {USA}).

Diamond-producing sire does it again

Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted’s Take A Bow (Royal Meeting {Ire}) improved on her trial efforts to break her maiden on debut at Gatton on Saturday. The 2-year-old filly, with Emily Lang in the saddle, contested the 860-metre juvenile maiden and was a dominant 3.5l winner over Just Cliffy (Cliff’s Edge), while Forcefilly (Invader) was 4.8l away in third.

Take A Bow is a daughter of the Lovatsville Stud-based Royal Meeting (Ire), who has been a leading light in an incredibly strong crop of first-season sires. The son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) sired the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes victress Hayasugi in his first crop, and Take A Bow is his third individual winner.

The 2-year-old filly was passed in for $25,000 when offered by Bell River Thoroughbreds at the 2022 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale. Bell River Thoroughbreds reoffered her at the 2023 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, where Proven Thoroughbreds and O’Dea Hoysted Racing paid $40,000.

Take A Bow is the second foal and first winner from the Not A Single Doubt mare Singular Sensation, a $250,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate who won twice as a 2-year-old.

Singular Sensation is a half-sister to the Group 3 winner and Group 1-performed Lightinthenite (by Galileo {Ire}) and is from the family of the classy Group 2 winner Haut Brion Her (by Zoustar). The daughter of Not A Single Doubt’s Spirit Of Boom colt was sold for $26,000 at the 2023 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale and was served by Newgate Farm’s Tassort last spring.

Royal Meeting is standing the upcoming season for $22,000 (inc GST).

Twelve for Headwater

Vinery’s proven producer Headwater sired his 12th 2-year-old winner this season in Australia courtesy of the Bjorn Baker-trained Ride The River. The son of Exceed And Excel has had 30 juvenile runners this season, resulting in 12 individual winners of 14 races, headed by the stakes winner Pure Aqua and the dual winner Don’t Forget Jack.

Ride The River was having his third career start at Newcastle, after finishing third on debut at Scone and then fifth at Canterbury. Partnered by Christian Reith on Saturday, the 2-year-old was too speedy for his rivals (including older horses), defeating Precious Straand (Press Statement) by 2.4l, while Party Prophet (Divine Prophet) was third.

Exceed And Excel | Image courtesy of Darley

The gelding bred by Scott Darby is raced by Darby Racing and is the final foal from the Mossman mare Mosscedes. A winner over 1100 metres, she is a half-sister to the Group 2 winner and Group 1-performed Sovereign Nation (Encosta De Lago).

Mosscedes’ seven named foals have resulted in six runners, of which five are winners. Additionally, Ride The River is from the family of New Zealand’s Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, Princess Coup (Encosta De Lago), who is the dam of the Group 3 winner Thewizardofoz (Redoute’s Choice) and the dual Group 3 winner Argentia (Frankel {GB}).

Snowy defies big odds

Coolmore’s The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes added a third individual winner, Snowy Finn, to his resume, which includes five stakes performers, including Maili, who was placed in Brisbane’s Listed race for juveniles.

Snowy Finn, trained by the Randwick-based Gary Doughty, won at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Ridden by Danny Peisley, the gelding paid $71 when he defeated his stablemate Sodamcute (The Mission), who was sent out at odds of $81. Finishing third was the Peter Robl-trained Bella Khadijah (Pierata).

Yes Yes Yes | Standing at Coolmore

Bred and raced by Gall Bloodstock, Snowy Finn is the first foal from the unraced I Am Invincible mare I Am Bugaboo, who was purchased by Gall Bloodstock for $4750 at the 2019 Inglis Digital November Sale. She was later sold to M Brennan for $20,000 at the 2023 Inglis Digital June Sale.

I Am Bugaboo’s second foal, a filly by Bivouac, was purchased by Francesco Sghirripa for $17,000 at this year's Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale. She foaled a colt by Yes Yes Yes last spring before slipping to Acrobat.

$800 yearling wins on debut

Jenna Mahoney’s Dupont (NZ) (by Belardo {Ire}) made a perfect start to his career by winning on debut at Ruakaka. Ridden by Kelly Myers, the 2-year-old gelding narrowly defeated Hard Attack (NZ) (by All Too Hard) and Vegas Queen (NZ) (by Proisir).

The son of the in-form Belardo (Ire), who no longer shuttles to Hanuni Farm, was withdrawn from the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale when he was due to be offered by Woburn Farm. Instead, the A and K J Bes-bred yearling was offered through the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Online Yearling Sale, where J. Dixon paid NZ$800.

Now owned by G. R. Dixon, Dupont has already repaid his purchase price. He is the second foal and winner from the Sebring mare Mazikeen (NZ). Her first foal, You Know (NZ) (by Preferment {NZ}), is a dual winner over 2000 metres.

Belardo (Ire) | Standing at Bearstone Stud

Dupont’s third dam, I’m In Heaven (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}), won six races and found fame as the dam of the G1 Schweppes Oaks winner Lights Of Heaven (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), who also won the G2 Eagle Farm Cup, the G2 Brisbane Cup, the G2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic, the G2 Hollindale Stakes, and the G3 Neville Sellwood Stakes, alongside a host of placings in top-class events.

In turn, Lights Of Heaven is the dam of the stakes-performed He’s Heaven (Zoustar) and the stakes-placed Angel Of Heaven (Redoute’s Choice), who was fourth in the G1 Queensland Oaks.

Mazikeen foaled a filly by Hanuni Farm’s shuttler, Ribchester (Ire) and returned to the Champion Miler in the spring.

“The A and K J Bes-bred yearling (Dupont) was offered through the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Online Yearling Sale, where J. Dixon paid NZ$800.”

Belardo (Ire), a Group 1-winning son of Lope De Vega (Ire) was also represented by the progressive Golden Path (NZ), who was dominant in winning the Listed WJ McKell Cup at Rosehill.

Eagle Farm: G1 Tattersalls Tiara, $700,000, 1600m

The final Group 1 for the season saw one of Australia's most popular horses in the winner's circle, Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) overcoming a wide gate to record her third win at the elite level.

Nine times successful from 52 starts, the 6-year-old took her prize money tally to beyond $10.9 - putting her in the top twelve earners in Australian history and making her the biggest earning sprinting mare.Bred by Saconi Thoroughbreds by Coolmore Stud's dual Group 1 winning Street Cry (Ire) stallion Pride Of Dubai (one of his 23 stakes winners and four multiple Group 1 winners), she is the first foal produced by the lightly raced Bella Orfana (Star Witness) - half-sister to the G2 sprinter Hallowell Belle and the G3 winner Fuddle Dee Duddle (dam of the G3 Maribyrnong Plate winner Brereton by Zoustar).

A granddaughter of the lightly raced Bella Inez (Beautiful Crown {USA}) - full sister to the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner In Top Swing - Bella Nipotina is an $80,000 graduate of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Bella Orfana (also bred by Saconi's Michael Christian) died only recently with her final of only four foals being a filly by Trapeze Artist. Her 3-year-old Quello Dorato by that same sire is a yet to race (fifth in a Werribee jump-out on Friday) member of the Danny O'Brien stable.

G3 Tattersalls Cup, $200,000, 2400m

What a marvel Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}) is, the evergreen 8-year-old still in great form five years after he won this same race (when it was contested over 3000m); a success he followed up on that spring with his G1 Melbourne Cup victory.

Digging deep to hold off a challenge from his stablemate Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), the popular chestnut had been out of the winner's circle for a while - his previous success the G2 Zipping Classic in the spring of 2022.

He had however been racing well in good company and he has now amassed in excess of $7.6 million in stakes with his six wins. Bred by Paul Lanskey who remains in the ownership after he was passed in for $45,000 (a $60,000 reserve) at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Vow And Declare is one of the 50 stakes winners for his sire who made a good mark on local racing despite shuttling to Coolmore on only two occasions.

He is one of the five winners (from six to race) for the multiple city winner Geblitzt (Testa Rossa), also dam of the Listed winning stayer Lycurgus (Star Witness). Served last spring by Tiger Of Malay after missing to Too Darn Hot (GB), Geblitz has a yearling filly by the latter whilst her yet to race 2-year-old Litzdeel (Dundeel {NZ}) has had a couple of jump-outs for the Nick Ryan stable.

Geblitzt is one of the eight winners (two being stakes placed) produced by the Group 1 placed Aim For Gold (End Sweep {USA}), half-sister to the stakes winners Walking Or Dancing and Irongail (Canny Lad) and to the dam of the G1 Epsom H. winner Hauraki (Reset).

Vow And Declare is a descendant of the legendary matriarch Mumtaz Mahal (GB) (The Tetrarch {GB}).

G3 WJ Healy S., $200,000, 1200m

It was a first Group win for the dual Listed winner Zarastro (I Am Invincible) who looked to have a bit in hand recording a soft win. A good advertisement for Inglis Digital - the $1,050,000 2020 MM Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate was purchased for just $32,500 by the Tony Gollan stable in October last year.

Bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds, he is one of the 108 stakes winners for his Yarraman Park based Champion Sire. He is the first live foal for the G2 Light Fingers S. winner Adrift (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).

Served last year by Wootton Bassett (GB) after missing to Extreme Choice, Adrift foaled a full brother to Zarastro the year before whilst her Michael Freedman trained two-year-old Seascape (also by I Am Invincible) won the first of her two starts in April. Adrift is one of the 11 winners produced by the unraced Stray (NZ) (Tale Of The Cat {USA}), also dam of the RL Karaka Million winner Imperial Win (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) and grandam of the G1 Railway S. winner Entriviere (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}).

A descendant of the outstanding matriarch Myrtlewood (USA) (Blue Larkspur {USA}), Stray is half-sister to Maldivian (NZ) (Zabeel), winner of the G1 WS Cox Plate, the G1 CF Orr S. and the G1 Caulfield S.Zarastro is one of the ten winners - from as many runners - for I Am Invincible out of mares by Zabeel.

Listed Tattersalls Gold Crown, $200,000, 2143m

Emerging victorious from an exciting battle with Deny Knowledge (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai), Princess Rhaenys (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) deserved her black-type level having been three times stakes placed including a close second in this same race last year.

Bred by the Hong Kong Breeders Club and sold by Glastonbury Farms to Peachester Lodge for $460,000 at the 2019 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, she is the 99th stakes winner for her Dalham Hall based sire who enjoyed a good shuttling career to Haunui Farm.

She is a full sister to the G1 ATC Derby winner Jon Snow (NZ) out of the two times winner Orinda (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}), half-sister to the dual Group winner Ubiquitous (NZ) (Tale Of The Cat {USA}) and to the dam of the Listed winner Monza Circuito (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}). A granddaughter of the triple Group 1 winner Solveig (NZ) (Imposing), Orinda was served last spring by Best Of Bordeaux having foaled a Home Affairs colt in late September.

Her latest named foal is the yet to race Daiki Chujo trained 2-year-old Flaming Genesis (The Autumn Sun).

Listed Tattersalls S., $160,000, 1400m

Overcoming trouble in running to salute as a short priced favourite, Depth Of Character (Deep Field) did a good job recording the second win of his three start career.

Bred by China Horse Club Racing and sold by their The Chase to Annabel Neasham for $180,000 at the 2023 Gold Coast Magic Millions, he is the 33rd stakes winner for his retired Newgate based sire. He is the second foal and second winner for the Matamata maiden winning Group 3 and Listed placed Caricature (NZ) (Power {GB}) whose first is the consistent Canterbury winner Llanddwyn (also by Deep Field).

Served last spring by Russian Revolution after foaling a Zoustar filly in late August, Caricature is one of the eight winners (from nine to race) for the Group 1 placed multiple city winner Octapussy (Octagonal {NZ}) who did such a great job producing three stakes winners - Pussy Willow (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}), Inside Agent (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}) and Pussy O'Reilly (NZ) (O'Reilly) - dam of this year's Group 3 South Australian Oaks and G3 Sunline Vase winner Positivity (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}).

Octapussy is one of the seven winners for the Group 2 mare Dopff (NZ) (Tights {USA}) who has proven to be quite the matriarch as ancestress of another ten stakes winners.

Depth Of Character is the second Deep Field stakes winner out of a mare with a strain of his relation Octagonal (NZ) - the result a 6 X 4 cross of Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces Of Eight {Ire}).

Listed Tattersalls Mile, $160,000, 1600m

A horse who knows how to find the line, Cottee (Merchant Navy) was in the winner's circle for the sixth time from 14 starts - recording her first win at stakes level.

The third stakes winner for her Kooringal Stud based sire, Cottee was bred by Go Bloodstock and sold by Coolmore Stud to Ciaron Maher Racing (never racing for that stable) for $20,000 at the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Cottee is the first foal for the G2 Rich Hill Mile winner Ruud Not Too (NZ) (Bernardini {USA}) who was bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan. Served last spring by So You Think (NZ) after foaling a colt by that same stallion in late September, Ruud Not Too had her yearling Fastnet Rock filly sell to KPW Bloodstock for $480,000 at Easter.

She is one of four winners produced by the unraced Too Many Diamonds (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}) whose dam is the G3 Eulogy S. winner Diamond Cashel (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) - dam of the G3 Red Anchor S. winner Royal Asscher (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}) whose granddaughter Still A Star (Toronado {Ire}) won twice at Group level.

The 15th stakes winner line-bred to Last Tycoon (Ire), Cottee also carries three strains of Twig Moss (Fr) and is 6 X 4 Sir Tristram.

Morphettville: Listed Oaklands Plate, $120,000, 1400m

Putting in the big strides late to secure a valuable stakes victory at nice odds at only her second start, Femminile (Dundeel {NZ}) was bred by Aralet and sold by Vinery Stud to Phillip Stokes Racing and Rick Connolly Bloodstock for $150,000 at the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

The 30th stakes winner for her Arrowfield Stud based sire, Femminile is the first foal for the very good race stakes placed mare Femme Fireball (Pierro) who won seven races - five of those at Doomben - from 23 starts.Served last spring by So You Think (NZ) after foaling a Pinatubo (Ire) filly in October, Femme Fireball is also dam of Bivouac yearling filly.

She is one of the four winners produced by the lightly raced Gosford maiden winner Subtitle (Fastnet Rock), also dam of the two times G3 Cameron H. winner Rock (Pierro).

The seventh stakes winner (from just 40 winners/78 runners) for Pierro as a broodmare sire, Femminile is 3 X 5 Sadler's Wells (USA) and 5 X 5 that stallion's 3/4 brother Nureyev (USA) - as well as 3 X 5 Zabeel (NZ).

Rosehill: Listed WJ McKell Cup, $200,000, 2000m

Remaining undefeated from two starts in Sydney, the Victorian galloper Golden Path (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) relished the heavy going with this easy win.Bred by Ardsley Stud and sold by them to M Rogers for $35,000 at the 2021 Karaka Yearling Sale (Book 2), Golden Path was sourced by the Price/Kent stable after good New Zealand trial form.

The 12th stakes winner for his Haunui Farm based sire, Golden Path is the final foal produced by the two times winner Golden Destination (Dubai Destination {USA}) - and her only winner. She is a half-sister to the triple Listed winner Enthusiast (Flying Spur) out of a daughter of the stakes winner Sumatra (USA) (Groton {USA}) whose eight winners include the G1 Belmont S. winner Summing (USA) and a couple of Group 3 winners. And she is ancestress of another 28 stakes winners including the Group 1 gallopers High Fly (USA) and Fighting Mad (USA) (New Year's Day {USA}) as well as the G3 Gloaming S. winner Love Tap (USA) (Tapit {USA}).

Golden Path is the 58th stakes winner produced by daughters of Dubai Destination (USA), a horse whose record as a broodmare sire is superior to his own stud record (28 stakes winners).

Age can’t defeat Vow And Declare

Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}) won Saturday’s G3 Tattersall’s Cup at the grand age of eight for trainer Danny O’Brien and jockey Billy Egan, defeating Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) who gave his trainer the quinella, and Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice).

“I'm absolutely rapt to ride a winner on a Melbourne Cup winner,” said Egan.

Vow And Declare won this race in 2019 before going on to win the G1 Melbourne Cup in the same calendar year. All up, the tough campaigner has six wins and 12 placings from 44 starts with earnings over $7.6million.

Waller passes $50million in prizemoney

Trainer Chris Waller became the first trainer to pass $50 million in prizemoney in a single season with wins from Speycaster (GB) (Highland Reel {Ire}) and Cigar Flick (Churchill {Ire}) on Saturday. The previous national record was $49,813,478, set by Waller in 2021/22.

Golden Path caps big day for Belardo

Golden Path (NZ) (Belardo {Ire})’s win in the Listed WJ McKell Cup at Rosehill on Saturday capped a big day for his sire, after he also sired debutant 2-year-old winner Dupont (NZ) in New Zealand. “Since the blinkers have gone on, he is just a real racehorse now,” jockey Chad Schofield said.

“He's jumping, he's putting himself on the pace, he is travelling perfectly and then he's quickening. Obviously if you have a turn of foot at the end of a staying race, you're always going to be hard to beat. I hit the front far too early, but when I pushed the button, he really put them away and he was too good with the light weight.” The win was his fourth career victory and his first at stakes level, and he became his sire’s 12th stakes winner.

Schofield rode a double at Rosehill, with his other win on Emmadella (All Too Hard).

Baraqiel makes it four

Baraqiel (Snitzel), the older half-brother to the Group 1 winner Autumn Angel (The Autumn Sun), took his unbeaten record to four with a strong win at Caulfield on Saturday. “It’s very hard to win four races in a row. It’s difficult. He’s taking natural progression. We’ve always thought he was a serious horse and it’s just a matter of continuing to develop him,” co-trainer Troy Corstens told Racing.com.

The 5-year-old gelding’s career has been plagued by injury issues. “He’s still doing a lot wrong. He’s racing like a 2-year-old. You’ve got to remember even though he’s five he hasn’t had many starts.”

Double for Lane moves him closer to Premiership

Jockey Damian Lane rode a double at Caulfield on Saturday extended his lead in the Victorian Metro Jockeys Premiership with 79 winners for the season, leading Blake Shinn by 15 winners. He won aboard Kin (Impending) who repaid Godolphin for delaying her retirement, and on Bossy Nic (Nicconi).

Ford gets 96th winner for Pride stable

Jockey Jay Ford is closing in on a century of winners for the Joe Pride stable after winning successive races for the trainer on Anagain (Hinchinbrook) and In Flight (Flying Artie) at Rosehill on Saturday. "I've ridden for Joe for a long time," Ford said.

"We have had good runs and bad runs, but he always has a ride for me. I do a lot of barrier trials for him, so I play a small part in his team.” The only jockey to ride more winners for the trainer is retired Champion Jockey Corey Brown with 115 wins.

One away from a Melbourne ton for Maher

Ciaron Maher’s double at Caulfield puts him on 99 in the Melbourne trainers’ premiership with wins by Desperado (NZ) (Ghibellines) and Wyclif (GB) (Archipenko {USA}). He is also closing in on the $50million season prizemoney target, passed by Chris Waller on Saturday.

Playing God juvenile winner

The first race at Belmont on Saturday was won by 2-year-old filly Noahquintilly (Playing God) for trainer David Harrison and jockey Joseph Azzopardi. She was having her fourth raceday start and is the fifth juvenile winner for her sire from his current crop of 2-year-olds.

Battle Of The Bush won by Tiger Legend

Trainer John Manzelmann only took over the training of Tiger Legend (Better Than Ready) in October 2023, and now he’s won the Battle Of The Bush. “It's really good to come down and win a race like this,” Manzelmann said post race.

“We've been trying for a while, we've been in every final so far, finally we've got one.” Tiger Legend has won nine of his 27 starts and over $550,000.

First win for amateur in Duke of Gloucester Cup

Caitlin McKee celebrated her first success in the saddle on Saturday in the most prestigious race of the Flair Amateur Rider Series, the New Zealand Hunts’ Association Duke of Gloucester Cup aboard Meandeel (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}).

“I’m stoked with that, I had so much horse coming into the turn, and he just did exactly what I asked,” McKee told Loveracing.nz.

Dan Vegas remains unbeaten with tidy win

Close relative to Winx (Street Cry {Ire}), 3-year-old gelding Dan Vegas (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) dominated with an easy front-running win at his second start at Ruakaka on Saturday to remain unbeaten. “His full-brother Gringotts has been going pretty well over in Australia, and people might have heard of another of his relatives called Winx,” co-trainer Kenny Rae told Loveracing.nz.

“This is a good horse in his own right. He won his first start here really well, and I didn’t think that was a fluke, but coming into today I thought he’d need to be pretty smart to go back-to-back. He’s done it.”

Tiffany dominates G3 Hopping S.

Elite Racing Club's 4-year-old mare Tiffany (Ire) (Farhh {GB}) stepped on to a bigger stage on Friday only to announce herself a new star actor in Newcastle's G3 Hoppings Fillies' Stakes. A dual Listed winner in Germany at her last two starts, Tiffany now has six wins from nine starts.

Movement to Ireland made easier

The Department of Agriculture and the Revenue Commissioners have removed the need for a guarantee for the temporary admission of horses in particular circumstances, the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association (ITBA) announced via presser on Friday.

“I want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the equine breeding industry and the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ITBA) in pursuing this issue,” said Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Martin Heydon T.D.

Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Martin Heydon T.D.

“Since I first raised the need for a change around the treatment of horses imported for breeding and training purposes, it has been a long road to arrive at this breakthrough, but this important change is finally over the line. I am confident that it will be a significant boost to the sector and that the removal of the need for a security bond will help attract more British mares to Ireland for covering by stallions here.”

Arqana Yearling Sale catalogue released

The catalogue for the Arqana August Yearling Sale, which takes place from August 16 to 18, was released on Friday.

The sale has an impressive roll of honour given last year's G1 Prix de l'Arc winner Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) and this year's French Derby hero Look De Vega (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) are both graduates. Underlining the strength of the catalogue, 40 per cent of the colts and fillies offered are out of black-type mares, with 20 lots out of, or siblings to Group 1 winners.

Shareholder dam sells for US$430,000

The Cloudy Dancer (GB) Flash Sale on Fasig-Tipton's Digital platform ended Friday afternoon with a bang as a bidding war stopped the clock at 2:04 pm with the mare sold for US$430,000 (AU$643,000) to David Hutson.

Cloudy Dancer's (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) second foal, Shareholder (USA) (Not This Time {USA}), captured the G2 Norfolk S. for 2-year-olds at prestigious Royal Ascot to remain undefeated.

Looking Ahead - June 30

4 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting runners are set to hit the Ballarat track on Sunday, including a Rageese gelding that brings solid form to a maiden race and a gelding by St Jean (Ire) stepping up over 2600 metres which looks suitable with his breeding.

Sportsbet-Ballarat, Race 2, 12.40pm, AEST, Brandt Mdn P., $37,500, 1100m

Nebuchadnezzar (NZ), 2-year-old gelding (Rageese x Meir (NZ) {Volksraad {GB})

It's a great form line for this Mitchell Freedman trained gelding who is hunting for his first success at start number three. At his first start he ran second in Listed grade at Trentham behind the talented runner Archaic Smile (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), she then subsequently ran second in Group 1 company behind New Zealand’s star two-year-old filly Velocious (Written Tycoon) in the G1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie.

Since then Nebuchadnezzar has trialled twice, running two solid seconds at Horsham and Stawell before making his Australian debut at Swan Hill when only being run down late over 1200 metres behind Oak Park Rebel (Rebel Raider) on June 7.

Rageese | Standing at Windsor Park Stud

Nebuchadnezzar is by Rageese out of the winning Volksraad (GB) mare Meir. Meir has proven to be a very handy producer leaving three winners including Dynastic (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) who was successful in the (RL) Karaka Millions C., and the Listed El Roca Trophy at Hastings. Her other winners have been Black Queen (NZ) (Mongolian Khan {NZ}) and Miss Ricky Bobby (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Meir is also a sister to the stakes placed The Tidy Express (NZ) (Volksraad), a half-sister to Lady Le Fay (NZ) (Thorn Park) who was victorious in the Listed Anzac H., and the stakes placed Glory Bound (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}).

Since producing Nebuchadnezzar, Meir has produced a yearling colt by Circus Maximus (Ire) and was most recently served in the spring by Windsor Park Stud’s exciting young son of Deep Impact (Jpn) in Profondo.

Sportsbet-Ballarat, Race 4, 2pm, AEST, Whitford Liquid Waste Mdn P., $37,500, 2600m

The Precursor, 3-year-old gelding (St Jean (Ire) x Zalga {Hold That Tiger {USA}})

The Ciaron Maher trained The Precursor will travel to Ballarat on Sunday to have his fourth start over 2600 metres. Two starts ago he ran a good fourth over a mile behind his stable-mate Winged (Pride Of Dubai), in that race Sweet Jasmine (So You Think {NZ}) was second and she won impressively at her next start at Moe. Then at his last start he ran a very good second without a lot of luck over 2100 metres on the Ballarat Synthetic track. The Precursor is bred to stay and he gets over 2600 metres which should suit today.

The Precursor is by St Jean (Ire) and is the second foal from the Hold That Tiger (USA) mare Zalga, who was a winner over 2100 meters on the track. Her dam is Zals (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and she also possessed staying ability winning twice over 1850 and 2050 metres as well as being metropolitan placed in Melbourne.

St Jean (Ire) | Standing at Brackley Park

She has left three other individual winners including the six-time winning gelding Bull Market (Written Tycoon), the four-time winner Pachino Boy (Grey Swallow {Ire}) and Wilaudie (Econsul {NZ}).

Zal’s other claim of fame is being a three-quarter-sister to Might And Power (NZ) (Zabeel) he was the Horse of the Year twice in Australia and amongst his fifteen wins were the G1 Caulfield Cup, G1 Melbourne Cup, G1 WS Cox P., G1 Mercedes C., G1 Queen Elizabeth S., G1 Yalumba S., and the G1 Doomben Cup.

Since producing The Precursor, Zalga has produced a yearling filly by Alabama Express, a weanling filly by Thronum and was most recently served by Bon Aurum in the spring.

Looking Back:

Depth Of Character (Deep Field) was impressive winning at Listed grade, he looks a talented colt and should develop into a lovely three-year-old.

Manos (Snitzel) ran a lovely race for second at Newcastle, a win does not look far away.

Dua Dance (Yes Yes Yes) was a touch disappointing running fifth at Ruakaka, she did only fade late in the race after showing good speed early, and she should improve with the experience.
