Darmanin likely to win first Tasmania Jockeys Title

While the Tasmanian trainer’s premiership looks set to go down to the wire, the jockey’s premiership has a runaway leader, with fly-in rider Anthony Darmanin set to claim his first title as he leads by 12 wins with three meetings remaining.

“It’s been a really good season, I’ve had great support from a lot of trainers, and when you get good support, you get the rewards. Obviously, it was unfortunate David (Pires) got injured and Brendon McCoull is out; it could have been a bit more interesting, but I’m happy to take it and it’s good to get the first one under the belt,” Darmanin told tasracing.com.au.

“My family, and in particular my father Armand, gave me a real leg up when I was very young. Thanks to them, I took the road to success. In the course of my long career, I have had the privilege of becoming an international jockey, wearing countless silks and riding champions on the world's finest racecourses,” said Mosse, who has won over 90 Group 1 races as a jockey.

100 Group 1 wins for William Buick

Jockey William Buick added his 100th Group 1 win when winning Saturday’s G1 July Cup on Mill Stream (Ire). "I think this was my 100th Group or Grade 1 win so to do it at home in the July Cup is extra special. It's great to win here – I hadn't realised until someone flagged it up this morning – and you want it to mean something special, and a first July Cup close to home is just that,” Buick told racingpost.com.

G1 July Cup won by Mill Stream

Peter Harris's Mill Stream (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) had been coming of age so far this season and his big moment duly came in Saturday's G1 My Pension Expert July Cup at Newmarket. Successful in the G2 1895 Duke of York Clipper S. and third in Royal Ascot's G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes on his last two starts, the 11-1 shot was held up early by William Buick with the pace strong up front. Staying on powerfully down the wing to wear down the QEII Jubilee runner-up Swingalong (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) inside the final 50 yards, the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained 4-year-old colt was driven out to assert for a neck success, with Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) 1 3/4l away in third.

“We were doing cartwheels when it rained, as it just took the sting out of the ground midweek,” Chapple-Hyam said. “I think that is all he needs. You knew there was going to be a lot of speed and when they were doing 10 and change at halfway and he was sat in behind, I just knew he'd pick up and I'm thrilled.”

Mill Stream is the second foal out of Swirral Edge (GB) (Hellvelyn {GB}), with her first being the G2 Richmond Stakes winner and G1 Prix Morny-third Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}). Mill Stream has now won five of his 14 starts.

Sosie wins G1 Grand Prix de Paris

Winning the G1 Grand Prix de Paris for the 14th time, trainer Andre Fabre was also ending a drought of 10 years since his last win as the Wertheimers' 3-year-old colt Sosie (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) prevailed at Paris Longchamp on Saturday evening. Third in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club last time, the homebred became the latest to emerge to bestow extra gravity on that Chantilly Classic as he swept by his contemporaries up this hallowed straight.

“Beforehand, you could think that this horse would do well over a mile and a half, he is an uncomplicated horse, sound and easy to train,” Fabre said. “Is he good enough for a race like the Arc? We don't know, but we will prepare him for the race. He is lightly raced, has improved with every run and there could be more to come.”

Sosie took his record to three wins and two placings from five starts and becomes the 22nd Group 1 winner for Sea The Stars (Ire).

Sosie's dam is the Listed Prix Coronation-placed Sosia (Ger) (Shamardal), who is also responsible for the dual Listed-winner Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}), the Listed winner Copie (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) and the G3 Prix Daphnis-runner-up Sosino (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). The second dam Sahel (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) produced the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio winner Sortilege (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}).

150 Group 1 wins for Brown

In the first Grade 1 of the 2024 Saratoga meet, Juddmonte homebred 5-year-old mare Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio {USA}) repeated in the G1 Diana S. giving trainer Chad Brown a record ninth win in the race and eighth in the last nine years. It also marked his 150th career Grade 1 win. Canada's 2022 Horse of the Year and Queen's Plate winner Moira (USA) (Ghostzapper {USA}) was second, while Gina Romantica (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}) finished third.

Caravaggio had one heck of a weekend. Porta Fortuna (Ire) won the GI Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket Friday and Whitebeam won the Diana on Saturday. Whitebeam, who hadn’t won since winning this race last year, is a sixth-generation homebred for Juddmonte from the spectacular Best in Show family. The Diana winner descends from Monroe's branch of the 1982 Broodmare of the Year. She has won five of her 13 starts.

Longchamp Group 2 winner for Churchill

Sent off the 11-10 favourite for Saturday's G2 Prix de Malleret at ParisLongchamp, Gerard Augustin-Normand's G1 Prix de Diane runner-up 3-year-old filly Survie (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) justified that faith to record a notable black-type breakthrough win. She now has three wins from six starts and becomes the 26th stakes winner for Churchill.

“She deserved that after her brilliant effort in the Prix de Diane,” trainer Nicolas Clement said. “It's a great job from the team and I am happy for the owner and his manager. It was a tactical race, but Stephane was in the right place and this filly knows how to quicken. She is in the Arc, she will have a break and could possibly run in the Prix Vermeille first.”

A full-sister to the G2 Prix de la Nonette runner-up Crisolles (Fr), who is in turn the dam of the G3 Horris Hill Stakes-placed Son Of Man (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Survie hails from the family of the G1 Ranvet Stakes-winning Australian champion miler Contributor (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and last year's G1 Champion Stakes hero King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett {GB}).
