In Part 2 of ‘Celebrity Babies,’ The Thoroughbred Report previews further star mares who may be due to foal soon.
Generation Gaby
A few Saturdays ago, the first foal of star mare Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible), named Just Like Gaby (Pierata), made her debut at Flemington. The filly was a courageous fourth behind First Settler (Written Tycoon) and indicated she’s worth following into the future.
Loving Gaby was an earlier 2-year-old than her daughter, winning on debut at Caulfield in the G3 Chairman’s S. and finishing fourth in the G1 Golden Slipper before placing in both the G1 Sires’ Produce S. and the G1 Champagne S.
The daughter of I Am Invincible improved with age, winning the G1 Manikato S. and the G1 William Reid S. as a 3-year-old, alongside a host of creditable placings in races such as the G1 Lightning S. and the G1 Newmarket H.
Following Just Like Gaby, Loving Gaby foaled a filly by Snitzel in 2022. She then slipped to Acclaim (Ire) before returning to Snitzel last spring.
Loving Gaby’s dam, Maastricht (NZ) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), was a talented runner. She won twice but was placed in the G2 Edward Manifold S., the G2 Alister Clark S., the G3 Adrian Knox S., and the Listed Ethereal S.
In 2016, Maastricht produced her first foal, who would be Loving Gaby. Her second foal, Gstaad (Sebring), only raced once and has been retired, producing her first foal in 2022, a filly by Deep Field named Chasm, followed by a filly by Bivouac. Gstaad is currently in foal to Newgate Farm’s G1 Cox Plate winner State Of Rest (Ire).
Maastricht foaled a full sister to Loving Gaby in 2019, named Greece. The filly was a $1.2 million purchase from the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She has won once and was recently sold for $550,000 at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale to Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA).
By 2019, Maastricht was offered at the Inglis Chairman's Sale where Coolmore and James Bester Bloodstock outlaid $2.25 million to secure her. Subsequently, she has produced the $1 million yearling Limburg (Justify {USA}), a stakes performer. Maastricht then had an unraced filly, Idun (I Am Invincible), who was purchased for $650,000 by the TFI Fillies Partnership at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Maastricht has not had a foal since Idun, slipping or missing the last three seasons.
Samaready legacy to grow
Samaready (More Than Ready {USA}) won the G1 Blue Diamond S. and the G1 Moir S., alongside the G2 Reisling S., the G3 Heath S., and the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies). Additionally, she was placed in the G1 Golden Slipper and the G1 Lightning S., earning her the title of Champion Female Sprinter in Australia.
Retired to stud, Samaready’s first foal, a filly by All Too Hard, died after birth. Sent to Snitzel in 2016, she produced Exhilarates, who Godolphin famously purchased as a yearling for $600,000. Exhilarates provided the blue army with victory in the Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic and the G3 Quezette S., among her six victories.
Exhilarates has since retired and joined the Godolphin broodmare band. Her first foal, a rising 2-year-old colt by Street Boss (USA), has been named Dubai Adventure. She was served by Dubawi (Ire) last December.
Samaready was sold to Tom Magnier for $1.8 million at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale while in foal to Snitzel. Despite a sketchy breeding record and her last foal, a colt by All Too Hard, having died after birth, she safely foaled the Snitzel colt she was carrying in August.
That colt became Shinzo, who claimed the G1 Golden Slipper S. and the G3 Pago Pago S., earning him the title of Champion 2-Year-Old in Australia. Shinzo has since been retired and will serve his first book of mares at Coolmore Stud this spring.
Samaready’s misfortune continued, as she has not produced a foal since Shinzo. However, she was exported to Ireland in 2022 and, according to Arion, was served by Justify (USA).
Tarpaulin: the next stakes winner for Shelters?
On Saturday at Randwick, the James Cummings-trained Tarpaulin (Harry Angel {Ire}) made it back-to-back victories. His trainer indicated that the Godolphin-raced colt would get his chance in stakes company.
Tarpaulin is the seventh foal from Shelters (Lonhro), who won three races but has proven a gem as a broodmare. Her second foal, Veranillo (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), won the Listed Lonhro Plate and was placed in the G2 Silver Slipper S. and the G2 Todman S. He was followed by a full sister, Multaja, who added the G3 PJ Bell S. and the Listed Helen Coughlan S.
Multaja is now part of the Godolphin broodmare band. Her first foal, a rising 2-year-old filly by Exceed And Excel, has been named Radicals. She returned to the now-retired stallion, producing another filly in September, and was subsequently served by Street Boss (USA).
Shelters’ sixth foal, Aft Cabin (Astern), won the G2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint, the G3 Eskimo Prince S., and the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude S. Aft Cabin has also been placed in the G2 Challenge S. and finished fourth in both the G1 Randwick Guineas and the G1 Doomben 10,000.
Following Tarpaulin, Shelters has a rising 2-year-old by Brazen Beau named Cavern, and foaled a colt by Astern in October before returning to that stallion.
Also in that star-studded broodmare band is the G1 Thousand Guineas victress Flit (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) and her Group 3-placed dam Glissade (Redoute’s Choice). Flit won four races; in addition to her Group 1 success, she also claimed the G2 Light Fingers S., the G3 Thoroughbred Breeders S., and the Silver Eagle. Flit has a rising 2-year-old colt named Cabriole (Lonhro) and recently foaled a filly by Street Boss. She is currently not in foal.
Her dam, Glissade, is the granddam of Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}). Glissade has an unraced 2-year-old by Too Darn Hot (GB) named Prosperity and a yearling full sister to Prosperity named Glissando. Glissade foaled a filly by Palace Pier (GB) in November and was served by Victor Ludorum (GB).
Additionally, Godolphin’s G1 Blue Diamond S. victress Lyre (Lonhro) has a yearling colt by Exceed And Excel named Wiser and foaled a filly by the same stallion last spring. Lyre was served by Bivouac in November.
In Secret (I Am Invincible) will join the band of blue hens this season.
Oakleigh Plate girls
What do Pippie (Written Tycoon), Celebrity Queen (Redoute’s Choice), and Booker (Written Tycoon) have in common? They all won the G1 Oakleigh Plate.
Celebrity Queen was purchased for $2.5 million by Tom Magnier at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Her first foal is a colt by Wootton Bassett (GB), and she foaled a colt by Pierro last spring before being served by Justify (USA).
Pippie also added the G1 Moir S. to her Oakleigh Plate success and was a $1.8 million purchase by Tasman Bloodstock from the 2021 Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Her first foal, a filly by Snitzel, was sold for $775,000 to David Ellis CNZM (BAFNZ) at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She foaled a filly by I Am Invincible and returned to the Champion Stallion last spring.
Booker fetched $1.6 million from Tom Magnier at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale. Her first foal, Railway Man (I Am Invincible), is a raced 2-year-old and was purchased for $2.5 million by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock. She foaled a full sister to the colt, who made $3 million at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, selling to the North American-based Resolute Racing. Booker foaled a filly by Home Affairs and slipped when served by Justify (USA). She was exported to North America in April.
Group 1 girls
The Ciaron Maher-trained Lighthouse (USA) (Mizzen Mast {USA}) was imported from North America to Australia by her owners at the time, and she made an immediate impact. Winning at Ballarat and the Listed Chester Manifold S., she went on to win the G1 Coolmore Classic and secured placings in the G1 Canterbury S. and the G1 C.F. Orr S.
Lighthouse was offered at the 2022 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, where Dermot Farrington Bloodstock paid $1.7 million to secure her. She foaled for the first-time last spring, producing a colt by Kia Ora Stud’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Farnan, and was served by Anamoe in November.
Global Glamour (Star Witness) won the G1 Flight S., the G1 Thousand Guineas, the G2 Light Fingers S., and the G2 Tristarc S. during a hugely successful career. Purchased by Coolmore, Gerry Harvey, and James Bester for $1.55 million from the 2019 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
Global Glamour is the dam of two named foals. Her first foal, Scientist (Zoustar), has won twice and now races under the moniker of Amazing Run in Hong Kong. He is followed by Just Glamorous (Justify {USA}). Global Glamour’s latest foal is a filly by Snitzel. She was served by St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) but slipped.
Japan expats
While we preview the Aussie girls, it's worth catching up with some of our expats in Japan. Yankee Rose (All American) was crowned the Champion 2-Year-Old and 3-Year-Old Filly in Australia, winning the G1 Sires’ Produce S. and the G1 Spring Champion S.
She was purchased by Japanese interests and has proved a sensation. Her first foal, Romneya (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), won twice, but was followed by the Champion Filly Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}). Yankee Rose has an unraced filly by Kizuna (Jpn) named Madison Girl and foaled a filly by Contrail (Jpn) last year. This year, she has a colt by Saturnalia (Jpn).
The G1 Flight S. winner Funstar (Adelaide {Ire}) was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for $2.7 million from the 2021 Inglis Digital July Sale. She is the dam of one foal, a colt by Kizuna (Jpn). Her older sister, Youngstar (High Chaparral {Ire}), won the G1 Queensland Guineas and was also purchased by Yoshida for $1.4 million from the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
Youngstar is the dam of one foal, Eri King (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), who won as a 2-year-old this year. She also foaled a filly by Contrail (Jpn).
She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) won the G1 Golden Slipper and the G1 A.J. Moir S. before beginning her stud career in Japan. Her first foal is the Group 2-placed Danon Tornado (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}), followed by the winning Diamond Rain (Jpn) (Satono Diamond {Jpn}). She Will Reign has a colt by Real Steel (Jpn) and a filly by Saturnalia (Jpn). Her latest foal, a colt by Kizuna (Jpn), was sold for ¥231,000,000 (AU$2,300,500) at this year’s JRHA JRA Select Yearling and Foal Sale.
