Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Two promising 3-year-olds are set to hit the track across Australia on Tuesday, including a well-bred Snitzel colt on debut at Newcastle and a consistent Capitalist gelding deserves maiden success second-up this campaign.
Newcastle, Race 2, 1.35pm AEST, TAB App Mdn H., $42,000, 1350m
Saint Emilion, 3-year-old colt (Snitzel x Kylikwong {Red Ransom {USA}})
The well-bred Saint Emilion (Snitzel) is set to make his debut over 1350 metres for trainer Ciaron Maher at Newcastle on Tuesday. He has trialled up twice in preparation for his raceday debut including a fourth behind West Indies (NZ) (Fastnet Rock) at the Warwick Farm trials over 812 metres on July 26 and he then ran seventh behind Queen Calanthe (Trapeze Artist) at the Rosehill trials over 1030 metres on August 20.
Saint Emilion is the 13th foal from the talented Kylikwong (Red Ransom {USA}). She was a winner at 1300 metres and 1600 metres and was stakes placed in the G1 VRC Oaks, G1 Australasian Oaks, G2 Kewney S., G1 Sires’ Produce S., G2 Edward Manifold S., and the G2 South Australian Oaks. She has also had some very good success as a broodmare leaving nine winners including the Listed winning stayer Cantonese (Redoute’s Choice), and the stakes-placed Chateau Margaux (Redoute’s Choice) and Monteux (Medaglia D’Oro).
Kylikwong is also a full-sister to Typhoon Tracy (Red Ransom) who was the Australian Horse of the Year and was an 11-time winner including six Group 1 races and Red Element who was a dual Listed-winning sprinter and stallion and the stakes-placed Tracy’s Choice (Redoute’s Choice).

Another close relation is Lake Superior (Encosta De Lago) who is the dam of the iron-horse Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) who has been successful 15 times including at Group 1-level seven times.
Kylikwong, since producing Saint Emilion, has left a yearling filly by All Too Hard and is due to foal again to All Too Hard next month.
Saint Emilion was a $200,000 purchase by Dynamic Syndications/Dean Watt Bloodstock from the draft of Westbury Stud Ltd at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Marais, 3-year-old gelding (Capitalist x Gone To Paris {Duporth})
Queensland’s Highgrove Stud sold this son of Capitalist to Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou for $220,000 at last year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
He made his debut at Gosford and was a close-up second to Rock Hard Love (Pierro) over 1100 metres, at his second start he ran another close-up second again at the same track and distance behind Empress Of Japan (NZ) (Savabeel) and then ran a solid third at Wyong on March 30 behind Killcare Beachgirl (Too Darn Hot {GB}). First-up as a 3-year-old he ran a nice race for third behind Mogul Monarch (Capitalist) at Hawkesbury over 1100 metres.
Marais is a full brother to the two-time winner Euros (Capitalist), who herself was a $300,000 Inglis Classic graduate.

Gone To Paris won two races and was sold at the 2018 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale to Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) for $230,000. She is a half-sister to the smart Foxwedge mare Aristocratic Miss who has saluted the judge three times and her consistency and class can be measured by being placed in the top-four of eight different stakes races.
Second dam Golden Pedigree (Gold Brose) was a Listed winner in South Australia and is a half-sister to the stakes-winning Bioligist (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and stakes-placed Fraar Side (Fraar {USA}), who in turn is the dam of the G1 Metropolitan winner The Verminator (Jeune {GB}).
Marais is aiming to become the mare’s fourth winner, following Euros, Cani Cancan (Russian Revolution) and Icing On The Cake (Astern). Gone To Paris since producing Marais, has produced a Pierata 2-year-old filly, a yearling colt by Tiger Of Malay and is due to foal to Capitalist this month.
Looking Back
Sunday, September 1, 2024
Cora Lynn (Exceed And Exccel) was scratched from her race, she will keep for another day.
Politely Dun (Dundeel {NZ}) ran a solid third, he looked like he peaked on his run and should improve off it for next time.
Happy Link (Toronado {Ire}) gained a deserved maiden win, she was strong late and looks like she may be able to go on with it.
