Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting 3-year-old runners are set to hit the track at Geelong on Tuesday. A Trapeze Artist filly chases maiden success and a promising Vadamos (Fr) gelding makes his debut.

Fumage, 3-year-old filly (Trapeze Artist x Firemaid (USA) {Machiavellian {USA})

Geelong’s Tuesday meeting will be the venue for the second start for the well-bred Fumage (Trapeze Artist). This promising filly ran a solid enough race when running fifth on debut at Sale behind Sepals (Calyx {GB}).

Fumage is by Trapeze Artist and is the sixth live-foal from the Machiavellian (USA) mare Firemaid (USA), who was a two-time winner on the track and has then went on to become a very successful broodmare leaving four individual winners so far in her career.

The best of these have clearly been the classy Shamal Wind (Dubawi {Ire}), she was an eight-time winner with her best win being in the G1 Oakleigh Plate, she was also successful another three times at Listed level and has subsequently gone on to leave five individual winners herself. Sebfire (Sebring) has also been a two-time winner and Listed-placed and her other winners have been Lakota Fire (Sioux Nation {USA}) and Samoon (Fastnet Rock).

Firemaid, since producing Fumage, has foaled a yearling filly by Toronado (Ire), and foaled a Pinatubo (Ire) filly in September.

Wind Blast (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Vadamos (Fr) x Penny Whistle (NZ) {O’Reilly {NZ})

The well-related Wind Blast (NZ) (Vadamos {Fr}) is set to make his debut over 1225 metres for Ben, Will and JD Hayes at Geelong on Tuesday. He has shown plenty of promise at the jump outs held at Pakenham and Flemington over the last couple of months and he looks well-educated to perform on debut.

Wind Blast is a son of Vadamos (Fr) and is out of the O’Reilly (NZ) mare Penny Whistle (NZ). She only raced once on the track but holds a very strong and deep pedigree page.

She also has made a fantastic start to her breeding career having left a stakes-winner as her first foal. She's A Treasure (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was the winner of the Listed Taranaki Oaks Prelude before she was sent to Australia where she managed a metropolitan placing in Sydney. Her other foal to race has been Rippa Eagle (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) who has been a four-time winner.

Penny Whistle is a sister to the unraced mare Charmed (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), she was a very good broodmare with her best winners being Chenille (NZ) (Pentire {GB}) who won the G1 Auckland Cup and Chintz (NZ) (Savabeel) who was dual Group winner. She is also a three-quarter sister to Irlanda (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) who was a very talented mare, she was a six-time winner from 1200 metres to 1600 metres and she was the heroine in the G2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, G3 Eulogy Stakes, and the Listed Lion Red Plate.

As mentioned earlier Wind Blast has a very deep page, other outstanding stakes-performers that feature are the dual Group 1-winning sire Mo’unga (NZ) as well as Super Photon (NZ) (Super Seth), Phelan The Power (NZ) (Power {GB}), Milford Sound (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}), Chandelier (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), and Not An Option (Not A Single Doubt).

Penny Whistle, since producing Wind Blast, has foaled a 2-year-old filly by Almanzor (Fr) and a yearling colt by Satono Aladdin (Jpn).

Wind Blast sold for NZ$50,000 at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale with Bourne Racing Stables being the successful purchaser for $50,000 from the draft of Hallmark Stud.

Looking Back

Protheatrics (Proisir) - ran a very good second at Tauranga, she was only narrowly beaten and a win looks around the corner.

Bold Bidder (Fastnet Rock) - was unfortunately scratched, he will keep for another day
