Resilient clearance rate offsets market softening at Karaka, as local sires remain popular

8 min read
The 2025 Karaka Yearling Sale underscored a shifting market, with economic pressures contributing to a decline in average and median prices compared to last year’s record-breaking sale. Vendors had to adjust expectations which led to an improved clearance rate, particularly in Book 2, while international buyers made their presence felt at the top end, and standout sires like Satono Aladdin and Shamexpress saw strong demand.

At A Glance

The Book 2 aggregate is NZ$9,759,000 (270 sold), down from NZ$11,444,000 (265 sold) reached in 2024.

The clearance rate stayed steady at 76 per cent, up from 58.1 per cent on Day 2 in 2024. Overall for Book 2, the clearance rate has been better than the last few years: 2024 - 70 per cent, 2023 - 71 per cent, and 2022 - 64 per cent.

At the conclusion of selling in Book 2, the average sat at NZ$36,144, down on 2024’s average of NZ$43,185. The median dropped to NZ$26,750, down from NZ$32,500 in 2024 and the lowest median in the last five years.

Top lot was Highden Park’s Lot 1079 colt by Satono Aladdin out of High Esteem for NZ$150,000 to John Foote. Foote led the buyers in Book 2 by aggregate with 8 yearlings purchased for $750,000 across both days.

Nine lots commanded prices of NZ$100,000 or more on day 2, adding to the 13 on day 1 for a total of 22. There were 17 in 2024.

The leading sire by aggregate was Satono Aladdin (Jpn) whose 11 sales netted NZ$1.025 million, while Shamexpress (NZ) led by average with his four yearlings making an average of NZ$97,500.

Sword Of State was the leading first season sire by average in Book 2 with nine yearlings sold at an average of NZ$51,056.

Figures reflect economic conditions

New Zealand Bloodstock were pleased with the overall results of their 99th yearling sale in 2025, particularly the higher clearance rate for Book 2 compared to previous years, but there was a sharp downturn in vital metrics. Both the median (NZ$26,750) and average (NZ$36,144), were down on 2024 median (NZ$32,250) and average (NZ$43,185).

“The figures don’t disguise the fact that there has been a softening in the market. The positive to come out of this Sale is the good increase in clearance rate,” said NZB’s Managing Director Andrew Seabrook.

“We have seen a reduction in the average and median, compared with last year’s record sale, which I think can be directly attributed to the state of the economy. It’s not at all reflective of the positivity that’s in the racing industry at the moment and the great vibe that’s been around all week.”

Book 2 saw a change of format, reduced to a two day sale from three, but with similar numbers of horses through the ring. In 2024, 265 horses sold, and this rose slightly in 2025 to 270 thanks to an improved clearance rate of 76 per cent (up from 70 per cent in 2024).

Kane Jones, New Zealand Bloodstock's Bloodstock Sales Manager, went on to comment: “We are particularly pleased with the clearance rate of 76 per cent, which will continue to climb, and it's up significantly in the past two to three years of selling at Book 2.”

“I think the clearance rate is what we need to focus on and be proud of. Vendors have come to meet the market and the quality horses have sold particularly well.”

Across both books, the clearance rate rose to 79 per cent (up from 76 per cent in 2024) and whilst down year-on-year, the median and average were comparable with 2023.

The entire five day sale grossed NZ$86,061,500, with the median dipping from NZ$90,000 in 2024 to NZ$80,000 in 2025. The median in 2023 was also NZ$80,000.

“We were thrilled to see so many people on the grounds for Book 1 and then the Karaka Millions raceday was outstanding with really high quality racing, which kicked us off into a really solid sale,” said Jones.

“I would just like to thank everyone who attended from near and far and the vendors for bringing quality horses to the market.”

Shamexpress makes an impact

Windsor Park Stud’s Shamexpress (NZ) has been riding the wave of success on the back of the outstanding form of his outstanding Hong Kong sprinting son Ka Ying Rising (NZ).

Throughout both books, Windsor Park presented five progeny by the son of O’Reilly (NZ) and they were rewarded substantially with 80 per cent selling for $100,000 or more at an average of NZ$112,000, a healthy figure off his 2022 service fee of $10,000 (plus GST).

On Day 2 of Book 2, Ben Kwok went to NZ$120,000 to purchase his colt out of Blinkie (NZ) (Turn Me Loose {NZ}), while Patella Bloodstock parted with NZ$125,000 to secure his colt out of High Tail It (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Rodney Schick, Stud Master and co-owner of Windsor Park Stud, spoke specifically about Lot 1082, explaining that he was a “lovely horse, very much in the style of Shamexpress. Great colour to him and great markings, very physical and a general standout.”

“It’s great that young Nick Kneebone has come back to New Zealand to train, it’s nice for him to get a nice horse like this colt.”

When speaking about Shamexpress and his results throughout the week, Schick was very proud to mention, “he’s only got small numbers, but when you leave a high class racehorse like Ka Ying Rising, it makes it a lot easier to sell them.”

International buyers bounce back at the top end

It was interesting to note that international buyers were making their presence felt on Day 2, especially after local buyers led the way on Day 1. At the end of the day, five colts that sold for over NZ$100,000 will be making their way offshore at some stage in their careers.

The presence of buyers like Upper Bloodstock, John Foote, Tartan Meadow Bloodstock, Lindsay Park Racing/Rob Slade, and Ben Kwok indicates that the international market is very active in Book 2, particularly at the top end of the market.

The purchase of Lot 964 by Slade Bloodstock and Lindsay Park Racing is an exciting one, especially given the colt’s pedigree; he is a full brother to the three-time winner and multiple stakes-placed gelding Tibetan (NZ) (Shocking) and a half-brother to Our Jumala (NZ) (Zed {NZ}), who was successful four times and placed in the G3 Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes.

The colt by Shocking from the 5-time winning Al Akbar mare Baltis (NZ) was purchased for NZ$115,000.

The Thoroughbred Report caught up with Rob Slade the Managing Director of Slade Bloodstock who said, “we were rapt to get the colt. Myself, the Hayes boys and Josh Rix all really liked him.”

“He is a really nice colt, he reminded me of Here To Shock in many ways, whom I also bought at Karaka… could lightning strike twice?”

Foote takes a shine to Aladdin

The dominance of Satono Aladdin (Jpn) has been impressive at Book 2 of the Karaka National Yearling Sales, with his progeny making a mark on both Day 1 and Day 2 - rewarding the breeders who backed him on his $12,500 (plus GST) 2022 service fee.

It’s clear that his stock is in high demand, especially with John Foote leading the charge. Foote’s ability to secure high-quality yearlings and make key purchases like Lot 1079, which went for NZ$150,000, demonstrates his confidence in the stallion's ability to produce top-level horses in Australia and Hong Kong.

Satono Aladdin has ended up siring both the top lots on both days, which solidifies his position as one of the most influential stallions in New Zealand. John Foote’s eight purchases, totaling $750,000 across the two days, and the colt from Highden Park, in particular, seems to have caught the eye with his pedigree and potential.

Lot 1079 - Satono Aladdin (Jpn) x High Esteem (NZ) | Image courtesy of New Zealand Bloodstock

“I thought he was the nicest horse on the grounds,” Foote said.

“He had a fair bit of High Chaparral in him, which is always a great thing. So I was pretty happy to get him for that price. He comes from that very good Prized Gem family.”

“He was bought for David Price and will be going to Victoria and then potentially to Hong Kong.”

“John Thompson has got a good stallion on his hands with Satono Aladdin. He’s blessed, John. He’s got Proisir and Satono and Ace High doing well too, so he’s on fire.

“It’s been a bit tough on the second day actually, we got beaten a few times earlier in the day and then we managed to buy two this afternoon.

“I’ve just been told Karaka opened in 1988, and I’ve been here since then,” he said. “Before that, I went to Trentham.

“I love Book 2. There’s some really nice horses at the right price.”

Hard work, big rewards: The sales stories that go beyond the price tags

12 min read
Amongst the record-breaking sales and high-profile buyers, Karaka is also home to the quieter, more personal victories—the ones that change lives. These are the stories of several people behind the horses, from stud staff taking their first steps into breeding to others seeing years of hard work pay off.

Cover image courtesy of New Zealand Bloodstock

Wentwood Grange Stud's Yearling Manager Brad Molander was born into a racing family. The son of a trainer, he spent his childhood around horses with early memories of attending yearling sales.

Strapping on weekends and during school holidays, Brad was destined to work with thoroughbreds. It was always the dream to have shares in horses, to head to the track and cheer them on, but a passion for the breeding side developed.

After spending time working at Blue Gum Farm in Victoria and Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, Brad returned to the country of his birth to work for Wentwood Grange in 2016.

Taking the dive - breeding racehorses

It was initially due to be a short stint, but Brad loves the farm he describes as “horse heaven” and working with the Hawkins family has enabled him “the opportunity to take a dive and breed my own horses.”

Teaming with friend John Atkinson (Wentwood Grange's farrier), Brad made his first broodmare purchase in August 2021, securing for just $600 the well related Missouri (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}).

Originally a $30,000 yearling purchased by Trevor McKee, Missouri filled a placing once in six starts and didn't catch the eye when placed in an online Gavelhouse sale.

Well she didn't catch other people's eye but she looked the goods for Brad who said “I don't know why she was so cheap. We've actually tried to sell her twice since we bought her but she has not attracted any bids!”

Impressed by her on type, Brad was also “really loved” Missouri's genetics.

“She is by Iffraaj who is doing a phenomenal job as a broodmare sire and she is out of a mare by Redoute's Choice, who was my favourite stallion when I was growing up.”

Missouri hails from a family well known for producing tough gallopers in Australia, her dam All Our Chips (Redoute's Choice) being a half-sister to the Listed James HB Carr Stakes winner Poppett (Mukaddamah {USA}).

All Our Chips' dam is a full sister to the stakes-placed All Sold (Northern Spring {Ire}) who did such a great job with her eight winners, including the durable multiple Group 1 winner All Our Mob (What A Guest {Ire}), the G1 1000 Guineas heroine All Time High (Flying Spur) and the four-time Group winning sprinter All Archie (Archregent {Can}).

When it came time to choose a mate for Missouri's debut season, Brad and John were happy to settle on Cambridge Stud's G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Embellish (NZ).

Embellish (NZ) | Standing at Cambridge Stud

“As a yearling manager, I had worked with quite a few of his first crop progeny and I really liked them, they had good bone and good brains.”

The first foal from the match pleased his breeders who thought that the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale would be a good fit for Missouri's son.

In The Air makes breeders proud

He was sold for $27,500 (the highest priced Embellish weanling at that sale) with Brad and John delighted that he was purchased by Chris Rutten to be trained by Roydon Bergerson.

Fast forward and that horse, now two, is named In The Air (NZ) and he is already doing his breeders proud, winning over 1000 metres at Tauherenikau in early January before taking his place in the R. Listed Karaka 2YO Millions last weekend.

Always wide from an outside gate, In The Air was unfortunately at the rear of the field, but Brad was still delighted.

“It was amazing to go that meeting having bred one of the runners,” he said, “and it was lovely to go and give him a pat having not seen him since he was sold.”

“He raced greenly and got a bit lost, but the stable are confident that there is more to come from him.”

With Missouri's second Embellish colt looking to be more of a later 2-year-old/3-year-old type, his breeders decided to “take the punt" and wait for the yearling sales, hopeful that In The Air would show talent and “boost the pedigree.”

“He (In The Air) raced greenly and got a bit lost but the stable are confident that there is more to come from him.” - Brad Molander

Again providing Embellish with his best sales result, the colt made his way through the Karaka ring on Wednesday with a number of good judges on him.

Off a $4,000 service fee fetching $100,000, the colt provided his breeders with “a life-changing” result; an outstanding effort not only for such a cheap mare but also for small breeders who have only a couple of other mares in partnership with Wentwood Grange.

Amazing, emotional, bittersweet

“It was an amazing and emotional experience,” Brad said, though also “bittersweet; it is pretty hard to let them go!”

But things could not have worked out better with the colt purchased by trainer Ross McCarroll who is “just down the road from us.”

“The colt is actually coming back to Wentwood before he is broken in so I will get to spend more time with him, and we are going to keep a little share.”

Brad is happy to be sharing the experience and the success with John Atkinson who he said “works incredibly hard over the whole sales period, shoeing for quite a few major farms.”

“It is amazing to see him get a result and experience this side of the industry.”

Hopefully there there is plenty to come for their young horse and also from his dam who is currently in foal to Shamexpress (NZ).

Sword Of State colt's big fan club

Another $100,000 result for a Cambridge Stud stallion provided a great Karaka story with Lot 756 purchased by St Kilda Lodge.

A first crop son of the G1 Sistema Stakes winner Sword Of State, the colt presented by Little Avondale Stud had the sale ring alight when the hammer went down as he had not just one or two owners happy with the result, but 11!

“One was crying, they were all gasping, high-fiving and hugging,” said a delighted Sam Williams whose idea it get his staff together to buy a weanling.

Lot 756 - Sword Of State x Ohio Girl (colt) | Image cour

It is something they have been doing for the last few years, and what started out as a way of nurturing and educating staff members has also turned out to be a great team-building exercise.

“You just can't buy morale boosting like this!,” Sam said.

“When we first thought of this it was to show our younger staff what it takes to get a horse to the sales, to have them really be involved rather than just going through the motions.”

“It was a way to nurture the next generation involved in this amazing game of ours. We hope that this is what their careers will be.”

“It was a way to nurture the next generation involved in this amazing game of ours. We hope that this is what their careers will be.” - Sam Williams

And it certainly worked out well, with the Sword Of State colt winning hearts and ending up, Sam laughed, a little spoilt when it came to the bells and whistles.

“I had a look at the posh rug he had on at the sales and I said, 'I don't remember buying that!'”

“Ah, we bought that,” was the rather sheepish reply from the Little Avondale staff members who had understandably fallen in love with their charge.

And little wonder, the colt is “a gun” according to Sam. “He settled in so well at the sales and he was just a dream,” he said.

A nice bonus

With each owner ending up with around $8,000 (“a nice little bonus”) in their pocket, Sam is looking forward to their next weanling sale venture, laughing as he said “I might let them spend a little bit more next time, maybe up to $15,000!”

It was just $13,000 that secured this colt who impressed Sam at the 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale.

“He had that bit of presence and vitality and being by a first season sire who we liked, we thought let's jump on this one.”

Lot 756 - Sword Of State x Ohio Girl (colt) as a weanling | Image courtesy of New Zealand Bloodstock

“As it turned out, Sword Of State is one of the hottest first season sire and everyone has been on them."

When the weanling sale catalogue comes out, Sam gets his staff (who must be full time, if they leave they forgo their share) to go through the pedigrees and pick out who they like.

“Then I go and have a look at them and suggest who to have a crack at within their budget.”

Sam enjoyed the colt's time in the ring, noting that “the master auctioneer Steve Davis was making it entertaining, telling everyone that they should bid on the staff horse!”

Sam Williams | Image courtesy of Little Avondale Stud

A half-brother to the stakes-placed Ohio Showgirl (NZ) (Showcasing {GB}), the staff colt is out of the unplaced Ohio Girl (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}) whose dam Falsetto (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) was placed in the G1 New Zealand Oaks won by Legs (NZ) (Pins).

Turning $500 into $300,000

It was another exciting New Zealand based first season sire who provided a hard stud worker with a great result, Waikato Stud's Dry Mare Manager Simon Lawson in celebratory mode after selling Lot 282 to Wexford Stables for $300,000.

An superlative effort when considering the mare cost Simon just $500 online!

The story of this colt goes back to five years ago when Simon first began work at Waikato Stud, making a career switch after a successful career driving trotters.

It happened to be the year that Waikato had bred a Savabeel colt who really caught the eye, Simon describing him as “a phenomenal yearling.”

Lot 282 - Noverre (NZ) x Serenella (NZ) (colt) | Image courtesy of New Zealand Bloodstock

“I remember him being so popular at the sales, he was constantly out of his box and even though he was buggered by the end of it, he never turned a hair.”

The colt was Noverre (NZ), sold to David Ellis for $800,000 before embarking on a short but impressive career that saw him win three of his seven starts including, at his finale, the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas.

Waikato had remained in his ownership and were keen to welcome him back into the fold, as was Simon who said that he “absolutely loved him as a racehorse.”

“It's just a shame that he never got to go to Australia,” he said; Noverre retired young having incurred ligament damage.

Noverre (NZ) | Standing at Waikato Stud

A share in Noverre? Hell yeah!

Simon expressed interest in taking a share in Noverre and when reminded of this by Mark Chittick he was quick to put his hand up; “I said hell yeah!'"

And so the search for the right mare began, Simon hunting through “Gavelhouse for a long time” before coming across the unraced Serenella (NZ) (Jimmy Choux {NZ}).

“I was looking for a mare who had family members coming through and I had worked a fair bit with her grandam who had thrown a good horse. She had a few injuries including a broken wither which I think turned people off, but her owners had done the right thing by her and, by the time she got to me, she had recovered.”

Simon Lawson | Image courtesy of New Zealand Bloodstock

“A sweetheart born to be a mother” is how Simon describes Serenella who “absolutely loves her foals and she does so well by them.”

Her $300,000 son is her first foal, one who has “been lovely all the way through.”

“I am just noting the similarities in temperament at the sales between him and his sire,” he said, both horses remaining chilled through dozens of inspections.

Several dozen in fact, Simon's colt taken out 174 times!

“At the start of the week all I knew was that I had a nice colt but he became the second most popular horse in the draft so I was thinking that he was going to get a special price. But I was not thinking $300,000 special!”

“....I was thinking that he (Lot 282) was going to get a special price. But I was not thinking $300,000 special!” - Sam Williams

“There were not just two people on him,” he said, “there were plenty of good judges who liked him. I was standing with Mark watching and he patted me on the back when he got to $200,000 and I had a big smile on my face then!”

And when the hammer went down, a tear or two. “It was pretty special,” he said, looking forward to putting a bit of a dent in his mortgage.

A perfect marriage

Simon is excited to have another Noverre colt out of Serenella who is back in foal to him; “she is married to him at the moment,” he laughed.

The thrill of the successful sale had many levels to it for Simon, who is proud of the stallion he loves and delighted that he is “not the only one who believes in him.”

He is also proud of his mare, of the colt himself and of the Waikato team who he said were such a great help along the way; “everyone treated him like he was one of the stud's own horses,” he said.

Mark Chittick was also thrilled. “I am very proud of our team, they put a lot of time and effort in and it was great to see one of our members get such a great result.”

A half-sister to the G1 Queensland Derby winner Kovalica (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}), Serenella hails from a high class New Zealand family, her dam Vitesse (NZ) (Makfi {GB}) being a half-sister to the triple Group 1 winner The Bostonian (NZ) (Jimmy Choux) whilst her grandam is a half-sister to the two-time New Zealand Horse Of The Year Mufhasa (NZ) (Pentire {GB}).

Trial report: Ceolwulf plotting path to Queen Elizabeth, Lady Shenandoah revs engine ahead of return

6 min read
Several of Sydney's top gallopers hit the Warwick Farm turf on Thursday morning, with Ceolwulf and Lady Shenandoah winning heats over Via Sistina, Fangirl, and Switzerland. Godolphin's Broadsiding and Golden Mile made their racetrack returns, and Aeliana sets herself on an Oaks path.

Pride’s Ceolwulf leads home Waller’s stable stars

Joseph Pride’s dual Group 1 winner Ceolwulf (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) led home a star-studded opening trial at Warwick Farm on Thursday morning, followed 1.68l behind by Chris Waller's super mare Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock), with stablemate Fangirl (Sebring) on her heels. Their G1 Empire Rose Stakes-winning stablemate Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel) finished fifth in her second trial of the month.

Speaking to Racing HQ, Pride confirmed that the 4-year-old gelding will resume in the G2 Apollo Stakes in mid February, before heading to the G1 Verry Elleegant Stakes, which will inform where he runs before his intended autumnal grand finale in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Last year John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA) paid $260,000 for his half-sister by Almanzor (Fr) at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. The filly now named Lupa Capitolina (NZ) has also made her way to Pride’s stable, who said that it is still “early days” with her.

In December, Willingham signed the docket for Via Sistina’s 3-year-old half-sister Via Sienna (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) at the 2024 Arqana Deauville Vente d’Élevage for €400,000 ($668,168). She has yet to race.

Lady Shenandoah revs engine in high calibre heat

The second trial at Warwick Farm on Thursday was also packed with some of Sydney’s top gallopers, with star Waller filly Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) leading the field home, letting down impressively to win by 1.41l over returning G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Switzerland (Snitzel). $1 million Silver Eagle winner Ostraka (Pariah) finished third, with G1 1000 Guineas runner-up Aeliana (NZ) (Castelvecchio) further down the field.

The trial was also the first public outing for Godolphin’s Golden Mile (Astern), returning to the racetrack as a gelding after injury curtailed his stud career in the spring.

Earlier in the weekend, Aeliana’s co-owner Denise Martin confirmed to racing.com that Waller has Oaks plans for the G3 Carbine Club Stakes-winning 3-year-old.

“Chris has a very interesting program in mind at the moment, and it's a very exciting one," she said. “It starts off with the (G1) Surround on the first of March and possibly a fortnight later in the (G2) Phar Lap, and if that went well, she could progress to the (G1) Vinery and then ultimately the Oaks if she was handling things well.”

It was announced earlier in January that Switzerland is being aimed at the G1 Lightning Stakes first up, with planning for a trip to Royal Ascot already underway.

A half-brother to Lady Shenandoah by Maurice (Jpn) will be on offer at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, as Lot 187 in Arrowfield Stud’s draft, and Lot 76 in the same draft is a full brother to Switzerland. Earlier this week, Star Thoroughbred and Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) paid $300,000 to take home Aeliana’s half-sister by Proisir out of Rich Hill Stud’s draft at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

Strada Varenna and Tuscany impress in hot trial return

Tuscany (Zoustar) might have won by a bob of the head in his trial at Warwick Farm on Thursday morning, but Bjorn Baker’s Strada Varenna (Street Boss {USA}) showed serious speed to keep up with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt, with a 4.5l gap back to the rest of the field.

The 2-year-old filly won a September trial before being put away for the spring, whereas Tuscany was beaten just 1.96l in the G3 Breeders Plate before taking a break.

A full brother to Tuscany and talented entire Schwarz (Zoustar) will be offered as Lot 198 in Widden Stud’s Easter draft in April. Summer Sham delivered a full sister in the spring, before revisiting Zoustar in October.

A daughter of G2 QTC Cup winner Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice), who is a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Criterion, Strada Varenna was bought at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $100,000 by Newgate Bloodstock from Emirates Park. Anthony Freedman Racing and Julian Blaxland Bloodstock (FBAA) spent $260,000 earlier this month to secure her half-sister by Tassort.

Broadsiding and Private Life gear up for more Group 1s

More spring stars stepped out in the third Warwick Farm trial, won by Richard Litt’s Bacchanalia (Exceed And Excel), with John O'Shea and Tom Charlton’s Linebacker (NZ) (Super Seth) at his second trial since returning as a gelding. G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Private Life (Written Tycoon) finished a comfortable fourth for the Waller stable, and the trial also saw the return of Godolphin’s G1 Golden Rose winner Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}).

Private Life’s Group 3-winning dam Aliyana Tilde (Snitzel) has a colt by Admire Mars (Jpn) at foot, and was subsequently covered by Dundeel (NZ). Garden Of Swans (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), dam of Linebacker and half-sister to Group 1-winning sire Mukhadram (GB), has a yearling by Dundeel yet to be offered for sale.

Texas and Pazyryk go head to head at Warwick Farm

Bjorn Baker’s debutante Texas (Nicconi) and a much improved Pazyryk (Lonhro) went toe-to-toe in a speedy juvenile trial at Warwick Farm on Thursday morning, with the Yulong-owned Algorithmic (Zoustar) chasing hard on their heels 2l behind.

Trained by James Cummings, Pazyryk finished down the track in two pre-Christmas trials and displayed a greater turn of foot in her return, finishing 0.09l behind Texas.

Bred by Godolphin, Pazyryk is the second living foal from dual Group 3 winner Raiment (Street Cry {Ire}).

Texas is a half-brother to R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic-winning Skirt The Law (Better Than Ready). His half-sister by Spirit Of Boom was purchased for $200,000 by Bennett Racing at the Gold Coast this month.

Aleppo Pine ready for route to Diamond

Godolphin 2-year-old Aleppo Pine (Blue Point {Ire}), winner of his only start in December at Ballarat, was a strong winner of his jump-out at Caulfield Heath on Thursday morning.

The colt readied himself with a softer run at Werribee a fortnight ago, and is currently third in the betting for the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes.

Aleppo Pine is a half-brother to five-time Group 2 winner Savatiano (Street Cry {Ire}), multiple Group-winning Vilana (Hallowed Crown), and dual Listed winner Athiri (Lonhro).

Dominant trial winner for Bivouac at Kembla

Benevac (Bivouac) looked to have plenty of promise in the way he accelerated away from the pack in a Kembla Grange trial on Thursday morning. The 2-year-old colt, trained by Ciaron Maher, debuted in a trial earlier month, where he finished third.

Benevac is a son of Listed Keith Mackay Handicap-placed Houston Benefactor (Encosta De Lago). Darley’s Bivouac has three winners to date, led by G2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes winner Intention (NZ).

Brisbane Racing Club director Neville Bell retires

Neville Bell announced his retirement from the Brisbane Racing Club board on Thursday. “Neville Bell will be remembered as one of the great chairmen in the rich history of the BRC and our predecessors,” vice chair Richard Morrison said in a press release. Morrison will step into the chair role and Terry Svenson becomes the vice.

“He has led the BRC through what is arguably the greatest transformation of any race club in Australia. On behalf of all BRC members, I would like to thank Neville for his service and wish him and his wife Mary a very happy retirement. We look forward to seeing them trackside.”

Bell has spent 26 years on the board, and has served as chair for the past 12 years.

“I’m grateful for the support of so many good people over the years but, quite simply, the time was right for me to step down,” Bell said in a statement.

“I’m thrilled for Richard and Terry. I very much look forward to watching them and their team of directors and our wonderful staff take the BRC into the future. It’s almost head-spinning to think back to 1998 when I joined the board of the QTC. That was before the rise of corporate bookmakers, online betting and social media. How times have changed.”

New Racing Minister for SA

South Australia has a new racing minister after Premier Peter Malinauskas announced a shuffle to his Cabinet on Wednesday. Emily Bourke will assume the portfolio of Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing, taking over from Katrine Hildyard.

“Since I was appointed Assistant Minister for Autism in 2022, I have worked hard to make South Australia an Autism inclusive state,” Bourke said in a press release. “There is more work to do, and I am thrilled I will now be able to continue improving the lives of Autistic South Australians at the Cabinet table.

“I’m also excited to be taking on the portfolios of Emergency Services and Correctional Services as well as Recreation, Sport and Racing.”

Pricey Boa Vista to debut in G3 Chairmans Stakes

Expensive 2-year-old filly Boa Vista (Snitzel) will debut in Saturday’s G3 Chairman’s Stakes. “There are a few horses there that have shown their ability at jumpouts and trials and a couple at the races and she hasn't got three trials wins next to her name or anything,” bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills told racing.com.

Boa Vista as yearling | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

“But she seems to be a horse on the up. She went from her first trial to second trial and showed really good improvement.” Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Boa Vista was a $1.25 million purchase from Newgate Farm at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She had previously sold for $480,000 as a weanling at the Edinburgh Park dispersal sale.

“I think this race is a good fork in the road to say do we chase that black type in Adelaide or do we chase it in a Blue Diamond. She is obviously a very expensive filly with a great pedigree and our system is geared around improving the value of these horses and gaining black type.”

Laws Of Indices sold to Ireland

Group 1 winner Laws Of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) has been sold and will travel back to Ireland according to racing.com. He was purchased by a current part-owner for $25,000. As an entire, he has stallion potential.

He arrived in Australia in 2021 after winning the G1 Prix Jean Prat, and placed in the G1 George Ryder Stakes and G1 Toorak Handicap. Winner of three of his 31 starts, with all wins in Europe, he has earnings over $2 million.

The Playwright to bounce into Widden

Tulloch Lodge’s 2-year-old filly The Playwright (Written By) will head into Saturday’s G3 Widden Stakes aiming to emulate last year’s winner and stablemate Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon). “It was a good run in the Magic Millions and she had been up there (Queensland) for a while,” co-trainer Adrian Bott told racingnsw.com.au. She ran fourth in the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic last start.

The Playwright | Image courtesy of Georgia Young Photography

“The way the races got dragged out that extra week meant she was four weeks between runs and whether she felt that in the race or not, she was one that was disadvantaged with that additional week between races. I still thought she ran well and she gets the addition of the blinkers this time around coming back slightly in trip off her last two runs at 1200 metres.”

Fierceness to debut for Smith

Trainer Matthew Smith will debut homebred 2-year-old colt Fierceness (Fierce Impact {Jpn}) at Canterbury on Friday night. “(Fierce Impact) was a bloody ripper. I wouldn't mind a few more like him. He was a really tough horse and he had plenty of speed. He was really good around seven furlongs and a mile,” Smith told racenet.com.au about Fierce Impact (Jpn).

“He raced on too, he won those Group 1s when he was six so he was obviously very sound. His progeny have such good temperaments on them. They just want to please you. They're such racehorses. The breakers love them.”

Baker trio for Southern Cross Stakes

Trainer Bjorn Baker’s good run of form looks to continue with three runners in Saturday’s G3 Southern Cross Stakes at Rosehill, being Disneck (Trapeze Artist), Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert), and Wategos (Capitalist). “He’s (Disneck) going fantastic; he had a tick over trial in between runs and that’s kept him in good shape - he looks fantastic and the small field suits him,” assistant trainer Luke Hilton told racingnsw.com.au.

Luke Hilton | Image courtesy of Bjorn Baker Racing

“Inside draws are a big advantage for him (Iowna Merc). He likes to get a little soft run midfield somewhere and Tim (Clark) knows him well, so he gets the right scenario to bounce back.

“I think Wategos can run a cheeky race fresh. The small field will help him and it just depends (on) how quick they go. He may be fourth, fifth or sixth in the run which won’t be against him and he has run some good races at 1200 metres - I think he has come back as good as ever.”

Lighthouse Lass lives up to the hype

Juvenile filly Lighthouse Lass (Capitalist) was all the talk before Scone’s Thursday meeting and she delivered with a 0.83l win for jockey Jean Van Overmeire and trainer Cassandra Stummer. Scratched from the G3 Gimcrack Stakes after being on the ballot, she won her debut from Rodney Northam-trained Be Sharp (Headwater) and Brett Robb-trained Comongin (Showtime).

Around the Nation: Thursday’s highlights

With three meetings on Thursday, it was Warwick Satherley-trained and ridden 2-year-old filly Saraqael (Flying Artie) who won on debut at Rockhampton.

Gollan pair set for Group 1 targets

Tony Gollan trained $1 million earners Freedom Rally (Rubick) and Golden Boom (Spirit Of Boom) will have Group 1 targets with Freedom Rally heading to the G1 CF Orr Stakes and Golden Boom to the G1 Oakleigh Plate. “(Freedom Rally) jumped out pretty well earlier in the week, he just felt the pinch late,” Gollan told racenet.com.au.

Tony Gollan | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

“But he has had a busy time, he trialled at Doomben really well and then he had to travel from Brisbane down to Melbourne. It's all happened quite quickly and now I've got a really nice bit of time before the Orr on Saturday week.”

Broadsiding to resume in Hobartville

Godolphin’s Champion 2YO Colt Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}) will resume for the autumn in the G2 Hobartville Stakes on February 22. “I think he is getting there nicely towards that race without getting carried away just yet,” trainer James Cummings told racenet.com.au.

“I'm quite pleased with what we are seeing from him and he is really settling into his work beautifully. He's a little bit more defined as he matures. But he was a precocious young horse, Australia's champion two-year-old, he has kept a quite nice level since but I like the way he has toned up a little bit more this time in.

Broadsiding | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“He's certainly managed to go right on with it from his two-year-old career by doing so (winning the Golden Rose). It was a really critical thing for a horse like him who has the potential to train on even as an older horse. Whilst we continue to see improvement from him from one prep to the next it keeps that hope alive.”

Loy gives up the booze and returns to the saddle

Jockey Brodie Loy is returning to the saddle only a few months after his shock retirement, and giving up alcohol has been a key factor. “It's not something I've planned to do but it's just the way everything has worked out,” Loy told racenet.com.au.

“I'm just a lot lighter now naturally and it's mostly because I've been off the beers. As you do I was just scrolling through Instagram and I saw this Bradley Cooper video how he got off the beers after 28 and it sort of changed his whole life. I had that number in the back of my head for a while.

“Every time you have a big night you think to yourself, ‘this is it' and then three days later you're back on the piss. But I'm living in Canberra now and I've been off it ever since a few weeks after I turned 28. One of my mates had a (boxing) fight and I spent a bit of money on the table, so I thought I'd have a crack and then after that I'd give it up. That's the way it's all played out.”

Ron’s Finalflutter on song for WA Oaks

Trainer Dan Morton has set Ron’s Finalflutter (Written Tycoon) on an Oaks path and she resumes in the Listed WA Breeders’ Classic on Saturday. “I would never say never with her,” Morton told racingwa.com.au.

“She’s got a fair bit of class about her. It’s obviously on the shorter side, but nice and fresh I think she’ll show up. She’s an exciting filly and we’re looking forward to everything coming for us.

Dan Morton | Image courtesy of Western Racepix

“From early days we had her penciled as one of the better chances leading into the 3-year-old season. From what we’ve seen so far, she’ll only improve on it as well. Off a low base she rose through the ranks pretty quick and was competitive against good fields. With a little bit of maturity under her belt, this prep ahead, all going well, should be a good one for her. She’s a really nice filly that is going to develop into a nice mare in time.”

Bustling is back, and the Quokka is a target

Co-trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr pulled the pin on 3-year-old gelding Bustling (Frosted {USA})'s The Everest campaign, but he’s ready to resume for the autumn and The Quokka might on the cards. “He’s had a really good spell and is in really good shape. We have to get him back and let the horse do the talking,” Kent Jnr told racingwa.com.au.

“He just had feet angles that were just not right and disuniting,” Kent explained about his spring issues. “He didn’t do it in his trial in Sydney leading in, he trialled so well there and ran slick time. He didn’t disunite, but in his one race start he did.

Bustling | Image courtesy of Western Racepix

“He had another gallop and we were not 100 per cent happy with him. We could have forced the issue (and pushed to The Everest) but all the owners are seasoned campaigners. While he was an expensive purchase, the feeling was we have a really nice horse on our hands and lets just get him right.”

About The Quokka, Kent said, “It seems an obvious race and he has been very good previously at Ascot over 1200 metres. The timing is very good for us and incredible prize money. If we got him back to his best it would be a nice option for him.”

Gawler track to undergo repairs

Racing South Australia’s team will repair the Gawler track. “We’ve had some areas of concern that have pretty much got worse and worse over the last couple of months, so it’s got to the point where we’ve decided to remove those areas,” said Racing SA’s Industry Track Manager Ian Ricardo.

“The main sections of track that require attention are down the southern end from about 1700 metres through to 1500 metres, and there’s another section at the crossing as well. We’re going to take about 100mm of profile out of the ground and put some clean sand in and lay some instant turf this Friday.

“We have a couple of weeks up our sleeve now, so we’ve had some water testing and soil testing done and we’ll take these results to the agronomists so they can recommend the appropriate fertilisers and soil treatments in and around the use of some very high salt content water out in Gawler.”

Oaks target for debutant winner

The G1 New Zealand Oaks is the target for 3-year-old filly Twisted Love (NZ) (Vanbrugh) after she won her debut on Wednesday. “My daughters bought her and they just loved the way she walked,” trainer Bill Thurlow told Loveracing.nz. Twisted Love was purchased at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale in book 2 for NZ$17,000 from Seaton Park.

Twisted Love (NZ) | Image courtesy of Peter Rubery (Race Images)

“We went through a lot of horses at the sale, and she was just a lovely mover and she fitted their budget. We have always thought that she was a good horse, but it has just taken a while for her to mature enough, and she is still probably not quite there. She is a big horse, so we have had to be very careful with how we have handled her.

“She is the one filly we nominated for the Oaks. We always thought she was an Oaks type of filly so that’s what we will be aiming for.”

Forsman filly heads to Derby

Andrew Forsman-trained 3-year-old filly Hinekaha (NZ) (Savabeel) will head to the G1 NZ Derby. She will run in Saturday’s Listed Oaks Prelude. “For her, it’s as much about more black type and the timing between races as to where we want to get to,” Forsman told Loveracing.nz.

“The 1800 metres is a nice progression, so it sets up perfectly for other races we’ve got in mind. She’s obviously spent time down at Surrey Farm (Bulls), Christopher Grace’s property where she was born and raised so she’s been up and down a few times and travelling won’t be an issue.

“We hope to run her in the Derby via an Avondale Guineas. If she was to be a Sydney candidate, going there off a long trip to Trentham (for the Oaks) would be tough but we are keeping all options open.”

Aussie runners set for New Zealand

Trainers Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald will run Bosustow (Blue Point {Ire}) in the G1 BCD Group Sprint next week at Te Rapa, while stablemate Numerian (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) will run in the G1 Herbie Dyke Stakes on the same day. “Bosustow was excellent (in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas). He has been in good form, and it was nice to deliver on a good day like that at Magic Millions and hopefully he can hold that form and improve a little bit,” Archibald told Loveracing.nz.

Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald

“Stepping up to Group 1 company is a big ask but we feel like the horse is going as well as he can, and he will give it a good shot.”

“Numerian is great. He had a jump-out at Pakenham on Tuesday and he is travelling over tonight (Thursday). He is in good order, he ran really well in Perth, and the 2000 metres is just about his sweet spot. He should be fit and ready to go, and we have been really happy with him.”

Hayes can grab his third Classic Mile

Trainer David Hayes thinks Rubylot (Rubick) can win Friday’s Listed Classic Mile and take the first leg of the 4-year-old series. “I think Packing Hermod is probably the horse to beat, but Rubylot is joint top-rated, an in-form horse and crying out for a mile,” Hayes told scmp.com.

David Hayes | Image courtesy of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

“I think (Rubylot) is coming through the best form and he’s run well in the Class Two races, so I’m looking forward to running him against some Class Three horses at set weights. I just think he could be a really nice middle-distance horse.

“Further than a mile will be no problem as well. He’s a lovely, relaxed horse and his racing pattern is good. His record says he’s classy and honest and hopefully we see that on Friday.”

Happy ready for G3 challenge

Happy Together (Ire) (Dragon Pulse {Ire}) was brave in defeat under top weight last start and trainer Frankie Lor has his ready for Friday’s G3 Centenary Vase. “I think he has a better chance this time because he doesn’t have to carry 135(lb),” Lor told scmp.com.

“He still has 131, but I think the horse still has a bit of improvement in him and I think this will be his best season. I think he will run a good race.”

Johannes Brahms ready for Friday’s Classic Mile

Johannes Brahms (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), runner-up as the favourite in the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes before filling the same spot in the G2 Gimcrack Stakes while under the care of Aidan O'Brien in 2023, is among a full field of 14 for the first leg of the 4-year-old Classic series in Hong Kong, the Listed Hong Kong Classic Mile. The HK$13 million event anchors Friday's Chinese New Year meeting at Sha Tin.

Impressive nominations for G1 Dubai World Cup

Nominations for Dubai World Cup night at Meydan on April 5 were released this week. Headlining the nine-race card is the $12 million G1 Dubai World Cup sponsored by Emirates Airline. A total of 173 horses have been entered, led by 20 Group/Grade 1 winners.

The winners from 2023 and 2024, Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) and Laurel River (USA) (Into Mischief {USA}), respectively, have signed on, as did the world's highest-earning horse, Hong Kong Horse of the Year Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who drubbed a good field in the G1 Jebel Hatta just last weekend.

Japanese Derby hero Danon Decile (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) steps forward on the back of a victory in the G2 American Jockey Club Cup on Sunday, while Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}), placed in both the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Breeders' Cup Classic, takes his chance after winning the G2 UAE Derby over the dirt track here last March.

The winners of the past two Breeders' Cup Classics are also entered in White Abarrio (USA) (Race Day {USA}) (2023) and Sierra Leone (USA) (Gun Runner {USA}) (2024). Part of the supporting cast from the USA is Kentucky Derby hero Mystik Dan (USA) (Goldencents {USA}).

Japan and Hong Kong feature in other Dubai Group 1 nominations

Among the other Group 1 races on Dubai World Cup night, the $6 million G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic features 109 nominees, 16 of them successful at the top level including Shuka Sho heroine Cervinia (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) and last year's third-place finisher and Japanese Fillies Triple Crown victress Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}). Standout G1 King George VI Stakes scorer Goliath (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) is part of this bunch, as is his Francis Graffard stablemate Calandagan (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), and defending champion and dual Eclipse winner Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}), will defend his title in the G1 Dubai Turf. Another 2024 Dubai World Cup night winner is Tuz (USA) (Oxbow {USA}), who is gunning for his second G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, but faces challengers in Straight No Chaser (USA) (Speightster {USA}) and Speed Boat Beach (USA) (Bayern {USA}). Rounding out the Group 1 races is the Al Quoz Sprint, with Hong Kong star California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner) nominated, as well as Howdeepisyourlove (Deep Field).

Looking Ahead - January 31

5 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Friday. A well-bred Blue Point (Ire) filly makes her debut at Moonee Valley, a promising Savabeel colt chases maiden success at Canterbury and an expensive Zoustar filly makes her debut at Canterbury.

Jasmina, 3-year-old filly (Blue Point (Ire) x Mandayana {Zoustar})

Friday’s Moonee Valley meeting will serve as the venue for the debut in the career of Jasmina, a well-bred daughter of Blue Point (Ire) from the Danny O’Brien stable at Flemington. She has had plenty of jump-out experience where she has shown good ability and looks ready to run well on debut in the hands of jockey Daniel Stackhouse.

Jasmina is the second foal out of Mandayana (Zoustar). She was placed on the track and at stud has already had success leaving Lowlands (Exceed And Excel) who has been a winner at Sale already in her career. She holds Khan (Exceed and Excel) as a half-sibling; he was successful in the Listed Breeders’ Plate.

Blue Point (Ire) | Standing at Darley VIC

Mandayana’s dam Mandawara (Fr) (Daylami {Ire}) was unraced on the track but is a three-quarter-sister to Manndawi (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}) who was a two-time winner and stakes-placed in Australia, France and Ireland. She is also a half-sister to Manighar (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) who was such a tough and talented racehorse winning 10 times from 1600 metres to 3000 metres with the best of his wins being in the G1 Ranvet Stakes, G1 BMW Stakes and the G1 Australian Cup.

Mandayana since producing Jasmina has left a 2-year-old filly by Frosted (USA) and she foaled a filly by Churchill (Ire) last spring.

Namaste (NZ), 2-year-old colt (Savabeel x Alam Mo Na {High Chaparral {Ire}})

Canterbury’s Friday meeting will serve as the venue for the second start for the promising colt Namaste (NZ), a son of Waikato Stud’s Champion sire Savabeel. He ran a solid race for third on debut at Wyong on January 11 behind Kujenga (King’s Legacy) and he raced a bit green, so with natural improvement he should be very hard to beat in this event.

This well-bred colt is the second foal from the dual High Chaparral (Ire) mare Alam Mo Na. Who has an interesting mix of speed and staying blood within her pedigree.

Alam Mo Na is out of the very talented sprinting filly Queen Of The Hill (Danehill {USA}) who was a five-time winner over sprinting trips, she was successful in the G3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes, G3 How Now Stakes, and the Listed Talindert Stakes.

This family has so much depth to it further back with so many talented stakes-performers including the outstanding sire Northern Meteor, Smart Missile, Rabbuka (Giant’s Causeway {USA}), Surge Ahead (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), Kiss From A Rose (Encosta De Lago), Palaisipan (So You Think {NZ}) and Sure Knee (Snitzel).

Alam Mo Na since producing Namaste has left a yearling filly by Per Incanto (USA) and she was due to foal again to the son of Street Cry (Ire) last spring.

Namaste was a NZ$525,000 purchase by Bjorn Baker Racing/Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) from the draft of Little Avondale Stud at the 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale.

All Eyes On Her, 3-year-old filly (Zoustar x Sexy Eyes {Written Tycoon})

The Chris Waller-trained Zoustar filly All Eyes On Her will be making her debut at Canterbury on Friday over 1250 metres. She has had plenty of educational trials and has looked to have her fair share of ability.

This well-bred filly is the second foal out of the Written Tycoon mare Sexy Eyes, who was a six-time winner from 1100 metres to 1600 metres including in the G3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes and the Listed Weetwood Handicap.

Sexy Eyes has made a great start to her broodmare career with her first foal Northern Eyes (Zoustar) selling for $1,250,000 to Tom Magnier from the draft of Milburn Creek. He has gone on to be a four-time winner so far in his racing career with the strong prospect of being able to add to that record.

Since producing All Eyes On Her, Sexy Eyes has produced a Farnan 2-year-old filly named You Sexy Thing that sold for $500,000, a yearling filly by Snitzel and was served by the in-form Wootton Bassett (GB) last spring.

All Eyes On Her was an expensive $1 million purchase by K Yoshida from the draft of Milburn Creek at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Looking Back

Lighthouse Lass (Capitalist) - won in stylish fashion at Scone, she settled well back but charged home along the inside to win nicely.

Saraqael (Flying Artie) - It may have only been a four horse field but Saraqael was impressive, he led all the way and won with ease defeating the $1.35 favourite by 2.08l

Forceofone (NZ) (Super Seth) was unfortunately scratched, he will keep for another day.
