Broadsiding leads home star studded trial at Warwick Farm

Champion 2YO Colt Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}) showed his class to power home under James McDonald in the first trial of Tuesday morning at Warwick Farm. Godolphin’s star 3-year-old was still under a fairly firm hold from McDonald when crossing the line 0.13l ahead of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Too Darn Lizzie (Too Darn Hot {GB}), with fellow Blue Army Group 1 winner Tom Kitten (Harry Angel {Ire}) 0.07l further back in third.

A gap of over 2l separated the trio from the rest of the field, with G1 The Metropolitan winner Just Fine (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in fourth, followed by the well-bred Dominetta (Zoustar) in fifth. Vauban (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) stepped out for the first time for new trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, 4.03l off of the winner.

“I just like the way he's hard and forward in this early stage of his campaign,” trainer James Cummings said to RSN. “He hasn't softened up in his break, but he enjoyed a nice break, and he's got every chance to maintain the mantle of being the top seed.

“I'd say if he ended up at the Classic distance, he could be explosive over a mile-and-a-half, but I think he's got a turn of foot that's still going to put him right in play in the Randwick Guineas and the Hobartville.”

Broadsiding's return is set for the G2 Hobartville Stakes a week on Saturday, ahead of a bid for the G1 Randwick Guineas.

Golden Mile and Autumn Angel shine in trial

Returning as a gelding, Golden Mile (Astern) led home another packed field of stars in the second trial of the morning at Warwick Farm on Tuesday. The 5-year-old Godolphin trainee came out wide under the steer of Adam Hyeronimus to beat G1 New Zealand Oaks victress Pulchritudinous (NZ) (Wrote {Ire}) by 0.41l. G3 Eclipse Stakes winner New Energy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) was third.

The heat also saw the return of unbeaten The Autumn Sun filly Autumn Glow, who missed most of the spring after her G2 Tea Rose Stakes victory due to needing surgery for a bone chip in her knee. James McDonald gave her a quiet ride to finish sixth, 3.19l off the winner. Trainer Chris Waller is hoping to line her up in the G1 Surround Stakes first-up in March, but will not push the filly to start if she isn’t ready.

“It is a bit of a rush to get there and I don't want to rush to get her there,” he told Racenet. Autumn Glow is currently second in the betting for the Group 1 event.

Autumn Glow’s dam Via Africa (SAf) (Var {USA}) has not produced a live foal since the 3-year-old filly, but was covered by Snitzel and I Am Invincible in the spring.

NZB Ready To Run sale topper pleases Te Akau on debut

Sold for a record-breaking NZ$1.65 million at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale to the bid of David Ellis CNZM (BAFNZ), Hostility (I Am Invincible) had a good showing for his trial debut for the Te Akau Racing team on Tuesday. The 2-year-old colt was allowed to sit quietly towards the back of the field by Craig Grylls, before sweeping past them in the final stages for a 1l win.

“He had his first trial today and Craig Grylls was happy with him,” said co-trainer Mark Walker. “He liked the way he relaxed and quickened up nicely in the straight. He cornered well going right-handed, and the interesting thing will be how he pulls up out of the trial.

“He’s certainly a nice horse, (he has a) lovely action, and he’s coping with everything really well.

"Obviously, when they cost that much money, there is always a high profile and a lot of attention focused on these sorts of horses, but he’s certainly done everything right in what we’ve asked of him at this stage of his career.”

Wodeton is nominated for the $160,000 Pierro Plate this Saturday, but it is expected he will bypass that for a berth in the G2 Silver Slipper Stakes a week later.

A $30,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale buy for her trainer, Infant Warrior is out of a half-sister to Listed winner Vinland (Sebring). Her half-brother by Portland Sky was withdrawn from this month’s Classic sale.
