Saturday preview: Aeliana bids to break the Rosehill Guineas 36-year fillies drought

9 min read
It's G1 Golden Slipper Stakes day at Rosehill Gardens, but that's not the only big event on, with Group 1 racing also at Trentham and Moonee Valley. Can Aeliana become the first filly winner of the G1 Rosehill Guineas since 1989? What sires are best positioned to receive more Group 1-winning offspring? Can an international field prevent Via Sistina from capturing back-to-back G1 Ranvet Stakes? Only Saturday has the answers; take a look at what's in store for one of the biggest days in Australian racing.

The sires on fire in Group races

With seven Group 1 contests across Australia and New Zealand this weekend, there are a handful of stallions with multiple opportunities to sire a top-flight winner; seven jostle for a spot at the top of the list, with three representatives each.

The G1 Golden Slipper Stakes field has an impressive three representatives from Kia Ora Stud’s first-season sire, Farnan, who won the race himself in 2020. High-calibre Darley shuttlers Harry Angel (Ire) and Too Darn Hot (GB) (we remain hopeful for his return!) each have three runners across three different contests, with the latter showing true versatility as a sire, with a runner in both the Golden Slipper and the G1 Rosehill Guineas over 2000 metres.

Harry Angel’s Stretan Angel aims to continue the run of great mares to the G1 William Reid Stakes, and will have to face off with talented filly Arabian Summer (Too Darn Hot {GB}), who bids to follow in the footsteps of 3-year-old winners Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) and Sunlight (Zoustar). Of the last eight editions of the 1200-metre sprint at Moonee Valley, fillies and mares have come away with the spoils five times, including Imperatriz’s (I Am Invincible) back-to-back victories in 2023 and 2024.

While most people will be paying attention to the resumption of his unbeaten daughter, Autumn Glow, Arrowfield Stud’s The Autumn Sun will have three colts and geldings competing in the Guineas. His barnmate, Dundeel (NZ), has two Group 1 runners, both in the G1 George Ryder Stakes, but takes the cake for most represented stallion across Saturday’s stakes racing, with eight individual runners accepted across five Group races.

Table: Sires with the most Group 1 runners on Saturday

Six nations face off with Via Sistina

Maybe Yulong’s big, bad mare has scared a few off from the G1 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, because a field of only six stand between her and repeating last year’s victory. Curiously, all six are from different countries. The reliable Lindermann (Lonhro) represents Australia, and he is joined by familiar faces Golden Path (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) and Fawkner Park (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}).

Accomplished British raider William Haggas returns to Sydney with 6-year-old Al Mubhir (GB) (Frankel {GB}), whose four wins to date are capped by last July’s Listed Gala Stakes. Haggas' 2023 Ranvet winner, Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai), will be saved for the G1 Tancred Stakes, and he believes the Frankel (GB) entire has what it takes to give the trainer his third win in the event on Saturday.

Al Mubhir (GB) | Image courtesy of Racing NSW

“Al Mubhir has got a great mind for it, a bit like Dubai Honour,” Haggas’ travelling foreman, Issy Paul told media on Wednesday. “He could probably do with a little bit more cut in the ground, but he's just a lovely, big, sound horse, and he has the ideal mentality and type to come down here.

“He has been galloping with Dubai Honour since he's been here, and he is well able to match him, so you'd hope he can translate that into the afternoon and we'll hopefully, see a nice run on Saturday.”

“He (Al Mubhir) could probably do with a little bit more cut in the ground but he's just a lovely, big, sound horse and he has the ideal mentality and type to come down here.” - Issy Paul

Ciaron Maher’s Zarakem (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) failed to factor into the finish in the G1 Verry Elleegant Stakes last-start, finishing eighth behind Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock). He was second at Royal Ascot to Auguste Rodin (Ire) in June of last year, so he is likely still adapting to Southern Hemisphere conditions. The 5-year-old entire has come south to collect international black-type before taking up stud duties in 2026.

The other new face will also be wearing the bottle green and white chequered colours of Yulong; War Front (USA) mare Full Count Felicia (USA) arrives in Chris Waller’s stable without a public trial before Saturday’s event.

She was victorious in the G1 EP Taylor Stakes two starts ago. Willingham Stud signed the docket for US$1 million ($1.59 million) for the 6-year-old mare when she was offered in Fasig-Tipton’s Lexington November Sale.

“She's the Pride Of Jenni of Canada,” was how Waller described her in his weekend runners preview. “The Group 1 she won, she went and led by about 20l and won easily, and beat Moira. It's real American international form, and she looks very fit.”

At the same sale, Bayles signed for US$4.3 million ($6.85 million) for G1 Breeders’ Cup Fillies & Mares Moira (Can) (Ghostzapper {USA}), who also wears the Yulong colours. She is nominated to kick off in the G1 Doncaster Mile.

The Guineas where few fillies have trod before

The lone filly in the Rosehill Guineas field, Aeliana (NZ) (Castelvecchio), sets out on Saturday to attempt to emulate her sire, who won the race in 2020, but she also attempts to break the boys’ 36-year record in the race.

No filly has won since 1989, when Riverina Charm (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) stormed home for Brian Mayfield-Smith in one of three Group 1 wins she scored that season, to finish as head of the Australian 3-year-old classification for 1988/89. Raced by Peter and Philip Vela, Robert Sangster, and Norm Carlyon, she was also runner-up in the G1 VRC Oaks, before crossing back over the Tasman in 1990 to snatch the G1 Air NZ Stakes from the great Castletown (NZ) (One Pound Sterling {GB}), when in the stable of Laurie Laxon.

No filly has even tried since Montefilia (Kermadec {NZ}) in 2021, where she finished third to Mo’Unga (NZ), and before her, the next most recent filly to try was Jameka (Myboycharlie {Ire}), who also ran third in 2016.

Aeliana (NZ) | Image courtesy of Sportpix

Aeliana is no stranger to playing with the boys; she was the only filly in the field in the G1 Randwick Guineas last start, and she acquitted herself, with fourth in the event. The start before, she was third in the G2 Hobartville Stakes, by just 1.14l to Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}). If we look back to the spring, she did beat eventual G1 Australian Guineas victor Feroce (NZ) (Super Seth) by 4.25l in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes - if she can battle on as well as she has in past, she could be in with a chance of breaking the fillies’ Guineas drought.

Baker’s strong hand fronted by powerful fillies

Bjorn Baker heads to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with eight runners before scratching, in seven of the nine stakes race events taking place on Golden Slipper day, including in three of the Group 1s on the card.

His hand is led by some of his stable’s best fillies; super juvenile Within The Law (Lucky Vega {Ire}), who has earned $1.145 million in just four starts, heads to the Golden Slipper, and G1 Stradbroke Handicap winner Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) heads to the George Ryder Stakes second-up. The 4-year-old mare, whose prizemoney to date exceeds $3.38 million, resumed in the G1 Canterbury Stakes, where she finished eighth and should relish stepping up in distance to 1500 metres.

Within The Law | Image courtesy of Sportpix

Within The Law already has drawn comparisons to two of Darby Racing’s previous stars; fellow bargain buy She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain), who, like Within The Law, won the R. Listed Inglis Nursery en route to her Slipper victory, and the even cheaper Yankee Rose (All American), who turned a $10,000 purchase price into $2 million in prizemoney, as well as finishing second in the Slipper.

Perhaps the Lucky Vega (Ire) filly will deliver Baker’s first victory in the event?

In the Rosehill Guineas, Baker is represented by The Autumn Sun gelding Majorca Sunset, who is taking a flying leap out of maiden company in the hopes of emulating his sire, who was victorious in 2019. If he wins, Baker will also claim his first victory in the event—a race won by his father, Murray Baker, with Dundeel (NZ) in 2013.

Majorca Sunset | Image courtesy of Georgia Young Photography

Baker lines up runners in all three Group 3 events; seven-time winner Shezanalister (Star Turn) and Spring Lee (Zoustar), both come through the G3 Wenona Girl Stakes, to contest the G3 Birthday Card Stakes, G3 Parramatta Cup winner Our Anchorage (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) heads to the G3 NE Manion Cup, and last-start G3 Aspiration Stakes victress Little Baia (All Too Hard) takes on the G3 Epona Stakes. Midnight Dynamite (Pierata) has been scratched from the Listed Darby Munro Stakes at the time of writing.

Proisir’s offspring in the sun in New Zealand

Across the Tasman, Riccarton Park and G1 New Zealand Oaks day at Trentham offer five opportunities between them to pick up black-type, and Rich Hill Stud’s Proisir has six offspring spread across the contests. At Riccarton, he has a remarkable three runners across the 15-horse field for the G3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, where he is represented by daughters Dazzling Miss (NZ), Jaffa (NZ), and Lucienne (NZ). A six-time winner, Dazzling Miss was third in this race last year and hopes to step up this year to claim her first black-type win.

In the Oaks, relatively untapped daughter Piccolino (NZ) flies the flag for her sire in search of a seventh Group 1 winner, but finished, sixth last time she met with race favourite Leica Lucy (NZ) (Derryn) and will need sharp improvement to beat the filly, who has won her last four starts. Fellow 3-year-old filly Vegas Queen (NZ) lines up for the G2 Wellington Guineas in search of a black-type win; she was second in the G3 Almanzor Trophy earlier this year.

Proisir | Standing at Rich Hill Stud

Lastly Kelly Coe (NZ), a member of Proisir’s second crop, heads to the G3 Cuddle Stakes, hoping to atone for finishing at the back of the field last year. She is already one of Proisir’s 21 stakes winners, having won the G3 J Swap Sprint in December. Proisir’s stakes runners for Saturday extends to seven when looking over at Rosehill’s meet, where 3-year-old gelding Sergeant Major (NZ) lines up for the Listed Darby Munro Stakes. A last-start third in the G3 Zeditave Stakes, he has a red-hot chance of adding to his sire’s record.

Tiz Invincible joins Inglis Chairman's Sale all-star line-up

5 min read
Dual Group 2 winner Tiz Invincible has been added to the Inglis Chairman's Sale catalogue ahead of the May sale. Her tenacious performances as a spring 3-year-old, her domination of several rising star fillies, and her stellar pedigree make her highly sought after from a buyer's perspective.

Cover image courtesy of Sportpix

Dual Group 2 winner Tiz Invincible (I Am Invincible) is the latest high-calibre mare to be announced as part of May’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale catalogue. Trained by Ciaron Maher, the I Am Invincible mare burst onto the scene with her electric spring 3-year-old campaign in 2023 where she won three in a row, breaking her maiden in the Listed Rosebud.

A $550,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase for Bahen Bloodstock, Ciaron Maher Racing, Eric Lucas, and Astute Bloodstock, Tiz Invincible’s pedigree will be sure to turn heads on sale night; her dam Amuletum (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) was a winner in her native country, but more excitingly is out of G1 Australasian Oaks winner Anamato (Redoute’s Choice), making her a half-sister to Australian Horse Of The Year and Champion 3YO Colt Anamoe, whose exploits on the track need little introduction.

Other siblings include Listed Owenstown Stud Stakes winner Anamba (GB) (Shamardal {USA}) and Adoringly (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the dam of G2 UAE Derby placegetter Island Falcon (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Listed-placed Warm Smile (GB) (New Approach {Ire}).

This is not just an elusive slice of one of Godolphin’s richest families, it is also the family of Champion NZ 2YO and dual Group 1 winner Yourdeel (NZ) - Mini Force X (Sin) (Dundeel {NZ}), G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Drum (Marauding {NZ}), and dual winner of the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Grand Armee (Hennessy {USA}).

Spring domination

Great expectations weighed on Tiz Invincible’s shoulders as a result and she debuted as a juvenile in the G3 Black Opal Stakes, finishing fourth behind Autumn Ballet (The Autumn Sun), before clinching her first piece of black-type with a second placing in the G2 Percy Sykes Stakes behind the talented Kristilli (Hellbent), beating subsequent Group 1 winner Kimochi (Brave Smash {Jpn}), Autumn Ballet, and juvenile Group winner Bossy Nic (Nicconi).

Come the spring, that was when she was really able to shine. Tiz Invincible tore home in the Rosebud in a field that contained G1 Caulfield Guineas victor Griff (Trapeze Artist), before defeating another top quality field in the G2 Furious Stakes, where she got the better of Kimochi again, G3 Gimcrack Stakes victress Platinum Jubilee (Zoustar), and Mumbai Muse (Zoustar) ahead of her G3 Red Roses Stakes win.

Just a fortnight later, she lifted again in the G2 Tea Rose Stakes, defeating another elite field including subsequent G1 VRC Oaks winner Zardozi (Kingman {GB}), G1 Surround Stakes winner Tropical Squall (Prized Icon), and the enormously talented Tutta La Vita (The Autumn Sun). She met and bested many of these fillies as they were on their initial rise - and indeed next start, Tropical Squall added the G1 Flight Stakes to her resume. Tiz Invincible acquitted herself tremendously with a sixth-placed run in the event, beaten just 2.65l.

She didn’t get the same summer break as many other talented fillies, running in Ozzmosis’ G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes in November then resuming in the G2 Light Fingers Stakes at the kick-off of the autumn last year. Since then, eight of her nine starts have been at Group level - three in Group 1s against some of the country’s best 3-year-olds - and she was unlucky to only finish second in the G3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes behind Fancify (NZ) (Niagara) in the spring.

The next chapter awaits

A filly that has proven herself capable of throwing her weight around at Group level on multiple occasions, Tiz Invincible awaits the next chapter in her life. While, as a 4-year-old, she could return to the race track for new owners, her breeding suggests she will be a great addition to any broodmare band.

I Am Invincible is making his mark as a broodmare sire already; offspring of his daughters are currently performing at a respectable 54.6 per cent winners to runners ratio, with an average of over two victories per winner and over $24.17 million in progeny earnings.

Among that number are eight stakes winners, including Royal Ascot Group 1 winner Asfoora (Flying Artie) and G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Kimochi, who share over $4 million in earnings between them, and 10 stakes performers. Four current juvenile stakes horses, led by G3 Blue Diamond Prelude (colts and geldings) winner Field Of Play (Deep Field) have him as their broodmare sire.

I Am Invincible | Standing at Yarraman Park

Yearlings from I Am Invincible’s daughters have sold for up to $1.5 million at public auction, and have averaged $175,343 so far this year; as recently as January of this year, a colt from his daughter Bleu Zebra by G1 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Stay Inside sold for $1 million to the James Harron Bloodstock Colt Partnership and Tony Fung Colts from Eureka Stud.

Tiz Invincible is surrounded by high quality mares producing high quality progeny, and her page is sure to be updated over the beginning of her broodmare career. Her dam delivered a full sister in the spring before visiting star shuttler Wootton Bassett (GB), and Willingham acquired Spring Dance (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a daughter of Anamba, for €350,000 ($578,900) at the Arqana Vente d’Elevage Sale in December.

The Inglis Chairman’s Sale takes place on the evening of Thursday May 8 at their Riverside Stables complex in Warwick Farm.

Trial report: Alligator Blood is back in action

6 min read
He's back! The long awaited return of Alligator Blood came on Friday at Warwick Farm's trial morning. Alongside him was Linebacker ticking over ahead of a possible G1 Doncaster Mile tilt, a speedy Farnan colt, and several million dollar youngsters flashing home.

Alligator Blood readies for another comeback

The comeback king Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) stepped out at the trials for the first time in over a year at Warwick Farm on Friday. Now with new trainer Chris Waller, the 8-year-old gelding was given an easy ride under Tim Clark and finished fifth without much pressure, 3.67l behind winner Couples Retreat (NZ) (Super Seth).

“He was fantastic,” Clark said post-trial. “He began nicely, got a good position in behind the speed, and travelled strongly the whole trial. I just kept working him through the gears on the bridle and he closed off well.”

“He (Alligator Blood) began nicely, got a good position in behind the speed, and travelled strongly the whole trial. I just kept working him through the gears on the bridle and he closed off well.” - Tim Clark

The winner of over $9.3 million in prizemoney is aiming to return following a tendon injury last autumn. No targets have been announced yet.

Guineas winner still has superior turn of foot

The last-start winner of the G1 Randwick Guineas, Linebacker (NZ) (Super Seth) ticked over with a sizzling trial over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm on Friday morning. The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained 3-year-old gelding travelled comfortably in midfield into the home straight, where Zac Lloyd pulled him out and hit the accelerator, sending him sweeping home to win by 0.13l over Thunderlips (Zoustar).

The winner of over $1 million prizemoney, Linebacker holds nominations for the G1 Doncaster Mile on April 5 and the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes a week later. John O'Shea Racing and James Bester Bloodstock paid $80,000 for his full brother Strongside from Bhima Thoroughbreds’ Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last January; the 2-year-old has trialled twice.

Expensive I Am Invincible filly flashes home to nab second

Bjorn Baker’s Tigletta (Capitalist) put in a strong, frontrunning performance to win her debut trial at Warwick Farm on Friday morning, but it was second-placed Thalestris (I Am Invincible) who caught the eye when flashing home late. Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, the 2-year-old filly sat in the last third of the field until the home straight, then dashed home to miss out on the win by 0.43l. It was her third career trial.

A $1.8 million purchase for Hilldene Farm from Yarraman Park at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Thalestris is the third foal from Pierro mare Notting Hill, a daughter of the influential Monsoon Wedding (Danehill {USA}). Notting Hill’s yearling filly will head to Easter this April as Lot 89 in Yarraman Park’s draft.

Catalina Baby hangs on for trial win

Justify (USA) juvenile filly Catalina Baby copped a suspension for hanging out in her most recent trial on Friday morning at Warwick Farm, but she still managed to win the 792-metre heat by 0.61l over Kitesurfing (Capitalist). The Bryce Heys-trained filly moved up to take the lead on the home turn and continued to improve home after a strong ride from Deanne Panya to keep her straight.

A $420,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale graduate for Mullaglass Stud, when she was bought by her trainer and Ellerslie Lodge, Catalina Baby is the second foal from dual winner Islay Inlet (Can) (Lemon Drop Kid {USA}), a half-sister to dual Listed winner Merveilleux (USA) (Paynter {USA}). R Yiu purchased her half-brother by Farnan at this year’s Classic sale for $120,000.

China Horse Club quinella with smart colts

Well-bred Chicama (Written Tycoon), whose only start has been in the $1 million Golden Gift, and debutante Beadman (Snitzel) fought out the finish in matching China Horse Club colours in a juvenile Warwick Farm trial on Friday morning, with Chicama prevailing by 0.27l. The Tulloch Lodge-trained colt comfortably quickened down the outside, whereas the Peter Snowden-trained Beadman battled forward from midfield to get beaten in the final strides.

Video: Watch race replay of Chicama, video courtesy of Racing NSW

The $1.35 million Easter purchase Chicama is a half-brother to high calibre racemare Shoals (Fastnet Rock), and a half-brother by Maurice (Jpn) is catalogued as Lot 218 at Easter in April.

Beadman, who was also bred and offered for sale by Arrowfield Stud, was a $900,000 purchase on the Gold Coast for China Horse Club and partners. He is the fourth foal from Listed Prix de Bonneval winner Iffranesia (Fr) (Ifraaj {GB}).

Million dollar colt jets home for James Harron partnership

The $1 million Magic Millions purchase Jet (Zoustar) lived up to his name on Friday with a smart trial win at Warwick Farm over the 792 metres. The Tulloch Lodge trainee settled just behind early leader Impact Zone (Exceed And Excel), and improved over him in the final furlong to win by 0.41l.

Video: Watch race replay of Jet, video courtesy of Racing NSW

Go Bloodstock paid $850,000 for Jet’s half-brother by Snitzel at the Gold Coast this year, where he was also offered by Segenhoe Stud. Jet is the first foal from Listed Fireball Stakes winner and multiple Group-placed Villami (Foxwedge), a daughter of dual Group 3 winner Galapagos Girl (Dehere), from the family of South African sprint champion Laisserfaire (Danehill {USA}). Villami delivered a filly by Anamoe in the spring, before revisiting Zoustar.

Smart Farnan colt follows his sire’s trend

The tagline since his first foals hit the ground has been ‘Fast Like Farnan’, and Farnan’s son Farindira continued that pattern in his debut trial at Warwick Farm on Friday. Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the juvenile colt hit the front and kept fighting to the line, coaxed by Tim Clark to win by 0.93l over Wentworth Falls (Too Darn Hot {GB}).

Kia Ora Stud, Gai Waterhouse, and Adrian Bott have been patiently awaiting this colt’s debut, purchasing him as a weanling at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale for $120,000 from Clarke and Croft Bloodstock in 2023. He is the third foal from six-time winner and G2 Thoroughbred Breeders-placed Somethingvain (NZ) (Falkirk {NZ}), who was served by So You Think (NZ) in the spring.

West Of Swindon to be reinspected

Team Hawkes’ G1 Golden Slipper runner West Of Swindon (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was the only horse in the field not to pass the Racing NSW veterinary inspections on Friday. He will be reinspected early on Saturday morning. “Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Carly Garling has notified Stewards that all runners, except for West Of Swindon, have been assessed as being suitable to race,” reported racingnsw.com.au.

“Dr Garling advised that West Of Swindon, which was a late withdrawal from the Pago Pago Stakes last Saturday due to an issue with its near fore foot, was found upon examination to be exhibiting some mild lameness in that foot.” If he doesn’t run, Brett Cavanough-trained filly Alabama Magic (Alabama Express) will make the field.

Family knowledge to help Rivellino

Trainer Kris Lees has unbeaten 2-year-old colt Rivellino (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in Saturday’s G1 Golden Slipper. “I had his mother, so I knew the family reasonably well. She raced better than what her record suggested and it’s not hard to be a fan of the stallion,” Lees told racingnsw.com.au.

“He’s developed into (a Slipper horse), his immediate target was the Millennium with the Slipper in the back of the mind. It’s certainly come into focus post-Millennium. I think the form around him is stacking up very well.

“It’s a very even race, I don’t know how to line them up but he’s three from three and no other horse has that going into the race. So we take some confidence in that. He has plenty left in the tank, he was only second-up with a five week gap.”

Broadsiding ready for Guineas redemption

Trainer James Cummings hopes a smoother run will be the answer in Saturday’s G1 Rosehill Guineas for Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}). “We’ve elected to go to the Rosehill Guineas and we are confident that he’s going to run a race. The horse was involved in a race that was somewhat disruptive, run along so fast at Randwick in the Guineas. Whilst he lost the race, I thought he ran very well,” Cummings told godolphin.com.

Broadsiding | Image courtesy of Sportpix

“One thing that fast pace was able to do is to bring that horse right on. He has been absolutely humming since the Guineas and he should be perfectly fit for 10 furlongs now. This Rosehill Guineas gives him another good opportunity at set weights against his own age, one of the last chances he will get. He’ll be ready to go, if he can stretch his brilliance to 2000 metres.”

“He did run very good time in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley last October, It took two world-class horses to beat him home. I suspect he gets an opportunity to demonstrate some of his class against his own age at 2000 metres.”

Beiwacht and Tempted take on the Slipper

Godolphin will have two runners in Saturday’s G1 Golden Slipper, with Beiwacht (Bivouac) coming off a poor run in the G2 Todman last start, and Tempted (Street Boss {USA}) winning the G2 Reisling Stakes last start. “(Beiwacht) is a veteran of one start at Rosehill for one dominant 2l victory in the Silver Slipper. I know he’s drawn awkwardly, but I’m optimistic he can gain a good run and it could work out for that horse because he’s got the ability to put himself into a race,” trainer James Cummings told godolphin.com.

“He would be anything but the forgotten horse had he not run in the Todman and just had a quiet barrier trial between starts. He’s got the ability to bounce back this horse, he did so on debut in a similar fashion in January. He’s got some toughness and some resilience about him.”

“(Tempted) came through the Reisling in good style, handled the run back in Sydney after the Blue Diamond quite effortlessly. She is better for that run at Randwick, she’s improved again a fraction from the Reisling. She’s perfectly fit and perfectly ready to run a huge race this weekend. I think the barrier draw is an advantage for Tempted.”

Stockdale’s third Group 1 ride is in Slipper

Jockey Thomas Stockdale comes into Saturday’s G1 Golden Slipper having only ridden in two Group 1 races but is a good chance on the Ciaron Maher-trained last-start winning filly Military Tycoon (Written Tycoon). “It's something I've always been working hard for,” Stockdale told racenet.com.au.

“We do all these hard yards throughout the week riding at provincials and what not and getting up for trackwork most mornings has kept me going. That's why I always do these hard yards to search for that end goal of riding in these bigger races. For it to finally come along is surreal but it's something I've always pictured myself in these sort of races so it's good to get the opportunity.

“She is not an easy horse to ride. I've put a lot of time into her at home and having that experience with her before raceday has helped her. She is a horse that you have to work with and not fight against. You need to know what buttons to push with her and what buttons not to push and I know how to get along with her.”

Reisling second sneaks into field

Michael Freedman-trained filly Marhoona (Snitzel) snuck into the G1 Golden Slipper field thanks to a last-start second in the G2 Reisling Stakes. “Given Tempted is pretty tight in the market ($5 equal favourite) and she finished close by to her in the Reisling, maybe that's the reason why the money has come but she has come on well from that Reisling run,” Freedman told racenet.com.au.

“I think we are probably lucky to pick up someone like (jockey) Damian Lane at reasonably late notice because we only knew we were in the race pretty late.”

Buckaroo resumes in George Ryder

Chris Waller-trained Group 1 winner Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock) will resume in Saturday’s G1 George Ryder Stakes. “The George Ryder field this year, I think, is exceptional. It's got some great speed horses there as well as the milers and horses like Buckaroo and Kovalica who are resuming,” Waller told racing.com.

Buckaroo (GB) | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

“I doubt he (Buckaroo) can win first-up but he's a high-credentialed horse. He's ready to peak through the carnival, hopefully in a Queen Elizabeth in three weeks' time.”

Wexford duo for Wellington Guineas

Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott will have two runners in Saturday’s G2 Wellington Guineas, a race they won last year with Grail Seeker (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}). This year, they have Cheaha (Alabama Express), and Wounder (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}).

“Cheaha's best form has been over 1200 metres, so going up to 1400 metres is a test for him.” Scott told Loveracing.nz.

“But he trialled nicely last week and had a good hitout on Tuesday. We believe he's going very well.”

Yargi pair for Listed Valley Pearl

Trainers Amy and Ash Yargi will have two runners in Saturday’s Listed Valley Pearl Stakes for 2-year-olds, being debutant gelding Royal Lodge (Doubtland) and filly Petit Artiste (Earthlight {Ire}). “We've got a really big opinion of this guy (Royal Lodge). We think he's a Group-quality horse, hence the aggressive placement with him at his first start,” Amy Yargi told racing.com.

“He was actually passed in with a $60,000 reserve at the Premier and we got him for $4750 online pretty much straight after. He's shown us a ton of ability and we've got a lot of time for the Doubtland progeny, I think he'll make a really nice sire in time.” Doubtland has three winners from his first crop.

Snitzel’s juvenile double

Champion sire Snitzel had a 2-year-old double on Friday when filly Little Black Dress won in New Zealand and gelding Fortissimo won on debut at Scone for trainers Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich.

The sixteenth 2-year-old winner from Snitzel’s current juvenile crop, Fortissimo was passed in by Arrowfield at last year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, and is the second foal of Group 3 placed Port Vendres (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}). Port Vendres is a daughter of G3 Hannover Hessen Pokal winner Lady Deauville (Fr) (Fasliyev {USA}).

Juvenile quinella for Marsh

Trainer Stephen Marsh and syndicators Go Racing enjoyed the quinella in Friday’s juvenile race at Pukekohe with Little Black Dress (Snitzel) and Mazino (NZ) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}) who were both on debut. “They’re a couple of lovely Go Racing fillies who had both shown us a bit of ability at home and at the trials, so it was pleasing to see them come out and perform the way they did today,” Marsh told Loveracing.nz.

“Little Black Dress will probably point towards the Star Way Stakes at Ellerslie on April 19. We think Mazino will come into her own over a slightly longer trip, so we’ll work backwards from the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes in May with her.”

Little Black Dress was purchased by Go Racing from Arrowfield Stud for $240,000 at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, and is out of G3 Ladies’ Day Vase winner Star Fashion (Street Cry {Ire}) who has left three other winners and is a daughter of Group 2 winner Elegant Fashion (Danewin).

Around the nation: Friday’s highlights

The meeting at Albury was cancelled after the track received more than 40 mm of rain overnight, and the club is in discussion with Racing NSW about the rescheduling of the Listed Albury Gold Cup. At Scone, 3-year-old gelding Nation Changing (Cosmic Force) won on debut and his sire gained a double when Whitson won at Terang. At Terang, 3-year-old gelding Compressing (NZ) (Savabeel) won on debut. Whitson and Compressing were part of a treble for jockey John Allen who also won on 3-year-old gelding Watch Capital (Capitalist).

Under The Louvre had a double at Ipswich with debutant 3-year-old gelding Bold Tee and Window Tapper. At Mount Gambier, 3-year-old filly She’s Impeccable (Deep Field) won on debut while 3-year-old gelding Jazalot (A Lot {USA}) did the same at Esperance.

Rubylot gets perfect draw for Hong Kong Derby

Listed Classic Cup winner Rubylot (Rubick) drew barrier four for Sunday’s Listed Hong Kong Derby, while the other favourite My Wish (Flying Artie) drew 14. “I’m thrilled with the barrier,” Rubylot’s trainer David Hayes told scmp.com.

Rubylot | Image courtesy of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

“I would have hated for him to draw three times in a row wide. If he’d drawn wide, he would have had to go back but from barrier four, he can lob midfield and won’t have to do as much. I think if Brenton (Avdulla) could have chosen a barrier, that is the one he would have chosen.”

Bundle Award to send owner into dreamland

Owner Colin Lo hopes his first Hong Kong Derby runner Bundle Award (Shamus Award) can win the big one for him. “It’s been 30 years of being a horse owner, so it’s amazing to have a Derby runner for the first time,” Lo told scmp.com.

“Every season, only 14 owners can get into this race. If you can win, for sure you will be in a dreamland. He’s got a tremendous turn of foot, he showed everybody that in the last race, so we’re all very excited. Hopefully he can step up a bit on Sunday.

Bundle Award | Image courtesy of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

“Nearly 20 years ago, I got a PP special permit with David Hall and his name was Bundle O’ Gold in Australia. After that, my kids were so young – six or seven years old – and they just kept on saying Bundle, Bundle, Bundle. So I said ‘OK, that’s it’ and we kept going with the Bundles.”

Purton back at the trials

A trial win on Ka Ying Rising (NZ) (Shamexpress {NZ}) on Friday showed jockey Zac Purton’s injury recovery is on track. “I feel pretty good. I’m at the track riding work and riding trials because I feel like we can go again. I’m gearing up for a return next week unless I pick up a ride in the Derby,” Purton told scmp.com. He broke his toe in a race fall on February 9.

Ka Ying Rising (NZ) | Image courtesy of The Hong Kong Jockey Club

“(Ka Ying Rising) just did what we expect from him this morning – he just keeps improving all the time. He seems to do it easier all the time. His mental attitude towards it, he seems to be handling it better all the time. He enjoyed himself. I’m looking forward to the races ahead.” His next run is in the G2 Sprint Cup on March 30.

Irish 2000 Guineas added to World Pool

The Group 1 fixture at the Curragh on Saturday, May 24, featuring the Irish 2,000 Guineas, has been added to the World Pool schedule for 2025, with all races on the card set to be globally commingled. Another change to the schedule comes at Newbury on Saturday, May 17. All seven races on the card, including the G1 Lockinge Stakes, will now be part of World Pool, up from five in 2024.

Sam Nati, head of commingling at the HKJC, said, “We are already looking forward to what will be a busy Q2 for World Pool as we anticipate our return to the UK and Ireland for 2025, and we're delighted to have strengthened our offering with a new race day added at the Curragh and to have extended Newbury's Lockinge card to a full World Pool meeting.

“We're committed to adding the best races from around the globe to the World Pool calendar, so extending our involvement in Lockinge day and taking in the Irish 2000 Guineas is an exciting development. We look forward to bringing these new races to our global customers as well as returning to some of our best performing meetings at Royal Ascot and on Derby day.”

British TBA CEO resigns

The British Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) announced on Thursday that its chief executive, Claire Sheppard, is to step down in the autumn following eight years in the role, with the recruitment process for a new CEO already underway.

“While working at the TBA, I am very proud of what the organisation has achieved for British breeders and the industry over the last eight years,” read a statement from Sheppard, who has been responsible for developing initiatives such as the Great British Bonus Scheme during her time in the role, as well as having to navigate the breeding sector through Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I am extremely grateful to the TBA's loyal and highly knowledgeable team who have taught me so much during my tenure and have been extremely fortunate to work alongside two committed chairmen over that period, including Philip Newton and former chair, Julian Richmond Watson. I am very grateful to them, and to all the TBA trustees for the ongoing support they have given me.”

Safety issues in Puerto Rico analysed

The Puerto Rico Horse Owners Association, Inc. (PRHOA) has agreed to drop a year-old federal lawsuit over allegedly unsafe surface conditions at Camarero Race Track after the owners of the island's only racing venue finally agreed to a long-sought demand by the plaintiffs to allow John Passero, the noted track-safety consultant who once served as the track superintendent at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course, to inspect the track.

After a February 10-12 inspection by Passero deemed that Camarero's dirt surface “was generally in good condition (and) not suffering at the time of the inspection of the safety issues raised by PRHOA in its complaint,” and after Camarero management agreed to pursue “several recommendations” made by Passero, both the PRHOA and the defendants (Camarero's owners and the Gaming Commission of Puerto Rico) entered into a “confidential” settlement agreement that included jointly dropping the lawsuit. “In view of Mr. Passero's conclusions, there was no need to continue with the instant litigation,” stated a court document jointly filed by plaintiffs and defendants on March 13.

On March 19, six days after the joint request to drop the lawsuit, the judge handling the case in United States District Court (District of Puerto Rico) signed an order and judgment “dismissing this action with prejudice in its entirety,” further noting that, “No attorneys' fees or costs are levied upon any party. This case is now closed for statistical purposes.”

Looking Ahead - March 22

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Saturday. At Kembla Grange, a promising Written Tycoon filly deserves to win her maiden, and an Alabama Express filly chases maiden success. Then a King's Legacy colt makes his debut at Morphettville.

Kembla Grange, Race 1, 1.25pm AEDT, Warren Saunders Super Maiden Handicap, $60,000, 1200m

Seastraand, 3-year-old filly (Written Tycoon x Down The River {Medaglia D’Oro {USA}})

The Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald-trained Written Tycoon filly, Seastraand will make her second start at Kembla Grange on Saturday, she ran a very nice second on debut at Newcastle, behind Flying Argyle (Flying Artie) on February 18, where she nearly led all of the way.

Her dam Down The River (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), showed some talent on the track, and was a winner at 1200 metres.

Written Tycoon | Standing at Yulong Stud

She is a half-sister to Centre Pivot (More Than Ready {USA}), who was a eight-time winner, including at Listed level in Queensland. Slow The Flow (Hussonet {USA}), and Dam Ready (More Than Ready {USA}), are also half-siblings that were stakes placed.

Since producing Seastraand, Down The River has left a 2-year-old filly named Snitzstream (Snitzel), a yearling filly by Extreme Choice and was served last spring by Pierro.

Seastraand was passed in short of her $250,000 reserve at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Morphettville, Race 2, 1.32pm, AEDT (1.02pm local), Thomas Farms 2YO Handicap, $65,000, 1000m

Durham Legacy, 2-year-old colt (King’s Legacy x Laugh A Little {Lonhro})

The well-related Durham Legacy is set to make his debut on Saturday, over 1000 metres for trainer’s Leon and Troy Corstens, and Will Clarkin at Morphettville. He has prepared for his debut with plenty of jump-outs, and has won his last three of them at Flemington.

Durham Legacy is a son of Coolmore Stud’s exciting King’s Legacy, and is out of the Lonhro mare Laugh A Little, who was a three-time winner over sprint distances on the track.

Durham Legacy as a yearling | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

She is well-related being a half-sister to two Group winners, Crack Me Up (Mossman), and Hoofit (Mossman), and has already proven to be a classy broodmare, having left the very talented A Little Deep (Deep Field), she has been a five-time winner, including in the Listed Chautauqua Stakes.

Laugh A Little, since producing Durham Legacy, has produced a filly foal by Justify (USA), and last spring was served by King’s Legacy.

Durham Legacy, was a $100,000 purchase by Yorker Lodge from the draft of Holbrook Thoroughbreds at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Kembla Grange, Race 3, 2.35pm AEDT, Club Rivers F&M Maiden Plate, $42,000, 1400m

Alabama Fox, 3-year-old filly (Alabama Express x Foxplay {Foxwedge})

The promising Alabama Fox (Alabama Express), is set to make her second start over 1400 metres, for Warwick Farm trainers Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald at Kembla Grange on Saurday.

She ran a very nice third on debut at Canberra on March 9, behind Jacob’s Ladder (Written By), and should only have improved off that.

Alabama Fox as a yearling | Image courtesy of Inglis

Alabama Fox, is the third foal out of the very talented Foxwedge mare Foxplay, who was a five-time winner on the track. She was classy enough to win the G1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes, G2 Phar Lap Stakes, G2 Tea Roe Stakes, and the G2 Furious Stakes.

Foxplay is also well-related, being a three-quarter-sister to the Listed placed El Rocko (Fastnet Rock), and is out of the Listed winner Butters (USA) (El Prado {USA}).

Since producing Alabama Fox, Foxplay has left a yearling colt by Written Tycoon, and was served last spring by Yulong Stud’s Pierata last spring.

Annabel Neasham Racing Pty Ltd/Mitchell Bloodstock, was the purchaser of Alabama Fox for $300,000 from the draft of Yulong, at the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Looking Back

Watch Capital (Capitalist) - was simply to quick at Terang, he led all of the way and won impressively.

Buckeye (Zousain) - ran a great race for second at Scone, he was just nailed on the line.

Lady Brightside (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}) - won very impressively on debut, she looks like she has a very nice future.
