Inglis have announced the final group of supplementary entries for the upcoming Chairman’s Sale on May 8, led by G2 Golden Pendant winner Makarena (Snitzel).
A fantastic type of mare
Makarena, a 4-year-old mare, is trained by Team Hawkes and has won three of her 14 starts and over $1.4 million. “She’s a fantastic type. We wouldn’t have bought her if we didn’t think she was beautiful. People know what we are like at the sale, we only buy the ones we really love. She’s a big, strong, scopey mare, who is a really good sort. A real ripper of a type,” said Wayne Hawkes.
“We are not breeders, so we are putting her through the sale to give her every chance. And we love the family so we’ll be the ones coming back to buy her first foal.”

Hawkes Racing bought her for $250,000 from Arrowfield Stud’s 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale draft, and she debuted as a spring 3-year-old, winning two of her first three starts. Set for more difficult targets as an autumn 3-year-old, she was second in the G2 Eskimo Prince Stakes when resuming, then added another second in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes and fourths in both the G2 Emancipation Stakes and G1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes won by Zougotcha (Zoustar).
This season at four, she won the G2 Golden Pendant, and added to her prizemoney haul when second in The Invitation and fourth in the Golden Eagle.
Makarena is a half-sister to G3 Summoned Stakes winner and G1 MRC 1000 Guineas-placed Missile Mantra (Smart Missile) and to Group 2-placed Maximak (Smart Missile). Their dam, Wecansay Mak (Starcraft {NZ}) was a winner over 1400 metres, and is a full sister to dual Group 1 winner We Can Say It Now, dam of G3 Maisons-Laffitte Prix du Prince d'Orange winner Sky Kingdom (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).
Share in Alabama Express
The final lot of the night will be a share in exciting young sire Alabama Express, whose 3-year-old filly Treasurethe Moment is one of the favourites to be Champion 3YO Filly for the season thanks to her eight wins in succession including the G1 Victoria Oaks, G1 Vinery Stakes and G1 Australian Oaks. He has three other stakes winners from his first crop who are 3-year-olds; Discretion Rules, Alabama Lass, and Glasgow Lass.
Alabama Express stands at Yulong Stud for $66,000 inc GST in 2025.

Chairman’s Sale now 96 lots
Headlined by Group 1 winner Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}), there are now 96 lots in the Chairman’s Sale for 2025 with 70 of them either stakes performers or producers.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with how the Chairman’s catalogue has come together and the addition of these eight high-quality supplementary entries really takes the catalogue to a new level again,’’ Inglis Bloodstock Sales Manager Harry Bailey said.
“Chairman’s this year is without peer the strongest breeding stock sale anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere with many exquisite offerings but aside from that, it’s a really fun night, we have some great entertainment planned for the evening and it’s going to be a memorable occasion as we celebrate the careers of some of the best race fillies and mares Australia has seen in recent years.”

G1 Golden Slipper winners Shinzo and Stay Inside were both sold in utero at previous Chairman’s Sales, and there have been several brilliant race mare graduates of this sale who have added to their already impressive records such as Kimochi (Brave Smash {Jpn}) who won a Group 1 after going through the 2024 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
