Value Buy: Mitchell Bloodstock love buying quick mares

At the Inglis The Chairman's Sale, TTR AusNZ uncovered a 'value buy' - an opportunity that a shrewd purchaser had snapped up. Mitchell Bloodstock picked up Vagrant, a Group 3-winning daughter of Pariah.

Lot: 19 - Vagrant (Pariah x My Obsession {Lonhro}) - $240,000

Buyer: Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA)

Vendor: Glenesk Thoroughbreds

It was a busy time for Mitchell Bloodstock as they walked away from the Inglis Chairman’s Sale with three valuable additions to their portfolio. Out of the three, it was Lot 19, the Group 3-winning mare Vagrant (Pariah), that caught the eye as a potential value purchase at Riverside.

The 5-year-old chestnut mare was secured for $240,000 as both a racing and breeding proposition. For James Mitchell, she was an appealing mare.

“Market-wise, I think we did well, we got her for a good price,” Mitchell said. “She’s a neat physical. has a deep girth, is very correct, and is an all-round lovely quality mare.

“She was very fast, she consistently ran good time, and we love buying fast mares as broodmare prospects.”

It’s clear that Vagrant’s physical profile and on-track credentials were clear to see, but her pedigree was also one that was as appealing as much as it was familiar.

“It’s a pedigree that Yarraman know very well, it’s a quick pedigree,” Mitchell explained. “The Pariah factor is a little bit left field, but he is a son of Redoute’s Choice and that’s great in a pedigree.”

Vagrant showed talent early, winning on debut as a juvenile, and proved her durability by progressing through the grades to claim black-type as an older mare.

Her highlight came in the G3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes, and she was placed in both the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes and the Listed Oaklands Plate. In total, she recorded five wins between 1200 and 1400 metres.

Vagrant also boasts a strong, current family. Her dam My Obsession (Lonhro) is still active at stud, with a 2-year-old named Sir Loyne (by Peltzer) owned by Champion Thoroughbreds and in training with Michael Freedman. There is also a weanling filly by Justify (USA), while My Obsession is currently in foal to G1 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Shinzo.

Adding to her pedigree’s appeal is being related further back to two notable Group 1 winners; Hayasugi (Royal Meeting {Ire}), last year’s G1 Blue Diamond Stakes heroine, and Ugo Foscolo (NZ) (Zacinto {GB}), winner of the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas.

When asked whether they would race her on or whether she would be retired, Mitchell, without being fully committed, stated that “there is every chance she will have a date with I Am Invincible”.
