Looking Ahead - May 13

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting horses are hitting the track at Moe on Tuesday. A promising Pierata filly and a well-bred Pierro filly both chase maiden success at start number three.

Sun Setting, 3-year-old filly (Pierata x Carribean Sunset (Ire) {Danehill Dancer {Ire}})

The Matt Laurie-trained Sun Setting (Pierro) will have her third start over 1000 metres at Moe on Tuesday. She has run two very good seconds in her career so far at Mornington last preparation, and after jumping out twice in preparation for her resuming run, she looks very hard to beat.

Sun Setting is very well-bred, she is a daughter of Caribbean Sunset (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who was a three-time Group 3 winner in Ireland, and once at Listed level in the United States.

She has gone onto become a very good broodmare leaving five winners, the best of them have been Holbien (Pierro) who has won seven times including in the Listed Lord Stakes, she has also left the stakes-placed duo of Amenable (lonhro) and Lovani (Lonhro).

Carribean Sunset, since producing Sun Setting, has produced a 2-year-old filly named Alphabet (Farnan), a yearling filly by Captivant that unfortunately died after birth, and a weanling filly by Captivant.

Sun Setting was purchased for $200,000 by Yu Long Investments from the draft of Kia Ora Stud at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Moe, Race 4, 2pm AEDT, Ladbrokes Owners Bonus Maiden Plate, $27,000, 1600m

Taste Of Wine, 3-year-old filly (Pierro x Abbey Marie {Redoute’s Choice})

The beautifully-bred Taste Of Wine (Pierro) is set to make her third start over 1600 metres at Moe on Tuesday. On debut she ran a promising third at Yarra Valley on March 31, and then she ran an okay fourth at Mornington on April 28.

Taste Of Wine’s dam Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice) was very talented, she was a three-time winner including in the G1 Schweppes Oaks.

It is a family with plenty of depth, Abbey Marie is a full sister to Absolutely (Redoute’s Choice), she was victorious in the G1 Australian Oaks. She is also a three-quarter-sister to the Group winners Runaway (Manhattan Rain) and She’s Clean (Redoute’s Choice).

Taste Of Wine was purchased for $300,000 from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Dermot Farrington Bloodstock
