Better than ever as Lyndhurst eyes third straight Queensland Sires’ Title

6 min read
Better Than Ready isn’t just holding his ground - he’s stretching the gap. With 122 winners this season and three sharp chances in Friday night’s $1 million National Stakes, Lyndhurst’s headline act is setting the pace. And their upcoming National Yearling Sale draft is stacked with early-running types to match.

Heading into his 11th season at stud, proven Group 1 sire Better Than Ready continues to sire early-maturing stock who come into their own during the Brisbane carnival.

Better Than Ready will stay at the same fee for 2025, and he covered 140 mares at $27,500 inc GST in 2024. His current crop of juveniles has six individual winners, and he has seven crops of racing age, led by Group 1 winners Port Lockroy and Apache Chase. Overall, he has 14 stakes winners, and is represented by Metalart who runs in Saturday’s Listed Chief De Beers Stakes.

“He’s going excellent. He’s the only stallion in Queensland with multiple Group 1 winners and he’s looking being the Champion Queensland Sire for the third consecutive year as he’s $1 million ahead of Spirit Of Boom with two months to go,” said Lyndhurst Stud Farm’s Jeff Kruger.

“He’s got a few feathers in his cap. No stallion other than Without Fear got as many winners in his first season, and Better Than Ready consistently gets plenty of 2-year-olds every year. For the number of winners, he’s among the top 10 in the country and it’s fair to say they’ve been off lower quality mares (than the other nine). He’s certainly lifted his mares.”

“For the number of winners, he’s (Better Than Ready) among the top 10 in the country and it’s fair to say they’ve been off lower quality mares (than the other nine). He’s certainly lifted his mares.” - Jeff Kruger

Better Than Ready has had 122 individual winners this season in Australia, beaten only by I Am Invincible (175), Zoustar (171), Written Tycoon (154), Toronado (Ire) (148), Capitalist (143), So You Think (NZ) (136), Deep Field (129), Dundeel (NZ) (128), Snitzel (125), and Spirit Of Boom is equal on 122 (as at Thursday morning).

Better Than Ready has three runners in Friday night’s $1 million Magic Millions National Stakes with Isti Star, Get Ready Lass, and Smashing Lulu.

Heading into tricky fourth season

With the good looks that come with being a $900,000 yearling himself, Barbaric was a speedy juvenile winning the G3 Black Opal Stakes. He’s heading into his fourth season at stud, with his first crop about to turn two, and Lyndhurst Stud Farm have given him a small fee reduction to $6600 inc GST to offset the normal risks associated with this stage.

Barbaric has been popular with Queensland breeders who appreciate the chance to utilise a son of Champion Sire I Am Invincible and speedy juvenile Mimi Lebrock (Show A Heart), who is the granddam of this season’s Listed winner To Cap It All (Capitalist). He covered 86, 91, and 96 mares in his first three books at $8800 inc GST.

“We’ve given him a reduction as he’s coming into his fourth year with rising 2-year-olds. They’ve sold up to $90,000. Most of them went through the March QTIS Sale and he’s averaged more than the sale average which was pleasing. His book size has grown each year at the same fee for those seasons,” said Kruger.

Barbaric will stand for $6600 inc GST in 2025 | Standing at Lyndhurst Stud Farm

“He’s out of a Magic Millions winner who trained on and was a Group 1 performed mare, so we hope they’ll run early and then train on like her.”

Mimi Lebrock won two of her first three starts including the R. Listed Magic Millions 2YO Classic, then at three she added the Listed Sheraco Stakes and was placed in the G2 Surround Stakes as well as running fourth to Forensics (Flying Spur) in the G1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes. At four she won the G2 Tristarc Stakes and G3 Let’s Elope Stakes and was third in both the G1 Myer Classic (again to Forensics) and G1 Emirates Stakes.

Sixteen yearlings for Magic Millions

Like many farms presenting yearlings at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, the story from Lyndhurst Stud Farm is that many of their draft missed earlier sales due to injury or other minor issues.

“The pick of the bunch is Lot 1144 by Nicconi. He had a hiccup that stopped him going to January (Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale), so we held him back for this sale. He’s very forward, a correct type who looks like an early runner.” He is the first foal of winning mare I’m Gunna Cashew (Exceed And Excel) from an imported American family.

The draft includes four yearlings from the first crop of resident sire Barbaric. “They are all peas in a pod, the four colts,” said Kruger. “The pick of them is the Laura Magne. He missed his reserve at the March sale. We’ve got his 2-year-old half-sister in work and she’s been placed three times. He’s a brother to five winners.”

Gietz (Better Than Ready) is trained by Tony and Maddy Sears who own the 2-year-old filly in conjunction with Lyndhurst Farm. She ran second last week behind Bluish Hue (Flying Artie). The colt is Lot 1183 and his dam is a half-sister to G2 Sunline Stakes winner Laura’s Charm (Encosta De Lago).

“The colt from Another Potter is a really nice horse, there’s plenty of speed there, and he’s a half to two winners. He’s an early August foal and a particularly nice type. He looks like he’ll outrun his page.” Lot 1391 is out of a full sister to R. Listed Magic Millions 3YO Trophy-placed Sammy Sequalo (Sequalo), and his dam Another Potter has produced six-time winner A Good Chance (Love Conquers All) and recent winner King Potter (Rothesay).

The four yearlings by Better Than Ready include three fillies and a colt. The colt is well related, as Lyndhurst Stud Farm have sent his dam Freeze On The Run (Freeze) to Better Than Ready to replicate the two Group winners in the family, Port Lockroy and Alpine Edge who are both out of Freeze On The Run's stakes placed full sister Freezethemillions. “He’s the star of the draft on his page being a three-quarter brother to Better Than Ready’s second Group 1 winner Port Lockroy and to group winner Alpine Edge who won the McLachlan here. He had a few issues early on and we’ve fixed those. He just needed the time.”

“The full sister to Better Get Set is a nice filly. She’s a bit different to Better Get Set, more like Queen Assassin who won eight races. It’s a mating that’s worked well with another metro winner too.” Lot 1268 is a full sister to Listed winner Better Get Set (Better Than Ready) and city winners Queen Assassin and Thatfeelsbetter who has won five times.

The rest of the draft includes yearlings by Brutal (NZ), Exceedance, Jonker, King's Legacy, and Spirit Of Boom.

Anamoe, Hitotsu, Best of Bordeaux: first-season firepower from Kenmore Lodge

8 min read
After a successful yearling sale season, there is, said Kenmore Lodge's Cameron Bond “a spring in everyone's step” as they head to the weanling sales and he is looking forward to presenting a strong draft at the Gold Coast on Sunday.

Cover image courtesy of Magic Millions

Bond, who runs the Wyreema based Kenmore Lodge with his wife Kellie, is confident on the back of strong results at the Magic Millions and Inglis Easter sales that the sales will be well-attended and strongly supported.

“There is just so much good prizemoney on offer that people want to get involved, they want to invest,” he said.

“And those who have done well at the yearlings sales will be out there looking for their next good one.”

Bond is proud of the good results Kenmore Lodge has provided pinhookers and is keen to again be of service in that regard.

“We love it when people do well out of our horses, it means they will be repeat customers for us.”

Pinhooking success stories

Three members of last year's draft fared particuarly well at this year's yearling sales.

A Too Darn Hot (GB) filly out of the city winner Alnaas (Not A Single Doubt) was purchased by Sledmere Farm and Cangon Stud Farm for $175,000, then on sold at Inglis Easter to Sutton Racing and McKeever Bloodstock for $360,000.

Too Darn Hot (GB) x Alnaas (filly) was one of the successful pinhooks out of a recent Kenmore Lodge weanling draft | Image courtesy of Kenmore Lodge

A Churchill (Ire) colt out of the placed Laeta (All Too Hard), daughter of the dual Listed winner Happy Hippy (Shamardal {USA}), was secured by Carlaw Park for $45,000 and later by Riversley Park for $120,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

And an Ilovethiscity half-brother to the Listed winner My Khalifa (Pride Of Dubai) was picked up for just $28,000 by Upper Bloodstock and Shane McGrath Bloodstock, he fetched $100,000 to the bid of L Olson at Inglis Classic.

Bond likes to present the Kenmore weanlings in good order with plenty left for the pinhooker to go on with, telling us that “we take a bit of a different approach to weanling sale preparation.”

“Our horses do not spend much time in the box,” he said, “they are mostly in the paddock.”

“We do a lot of horsemanship style work with them, they are ponied, also spending time in the round yard where we can get a feel for how they are going.”

“We do a lot of horsemanship style work with them, they are ponied, also spending time in the round yard where we can get a feel for how they are going.” - Cameron Bond

Whilst Bond just “loves selling horses,” he does enjoy noting the response to the progeny of first season sires.

“Those stallions are fresh in everyone's minds,” he said, knowing that breeders and owners are often keen to check these youngsters out at the sales in order to get an idea of how those horses are shaping early in their stud careers.

Anamoe filly stands out

Kenmore Lodge are selling weanlings by four such stallions; colts by Coolmore Stud's triple Group-winning Snitzel horse Best Of Bordeaux and Newgate Farm's G1 Golden Rose Stakes winner In The Congo (also by Snitzel) and fillies by Arrowfield Stud's triple Group 1 winner Hitotsu and Darley's star Anamoe.

Bond is impressed by what he is seeing in his weanlings by each of those stallions with Lot 200 one he is especially excited about.

A half-sister by Anamoe to the multiple city (Sydney and Hong Kong) winner Sing Dragon (Written Tycoon) out of the metropolitan winner Secret Doubt (Not A Single Doubt) is a filly he can't wait to showcase.

“We have been hearing such great things about the Anamoe foals and this filly is a stand-out. And she has been from day one,” he enthused.

“She is a cracking type with a beautiful temperament,” he said of the granddaughter of the G1 Railway Stakes winner Covertly (Metal Storm {Fr}).

Earlier in the day Kenmore take through the ring the first of the sale's weanlings by Best Of Bordeaux; Lot 33, a colt out of the speedy race mare Holdin' My Own (Spirit Of Boom) whose full sister Chinny Boom won at Listed level last winter.

“He is a big, strong, early maturing type,” Bond said.

Kenmore also have the first of the sale's In The Congo weanlings; Lot 75 out of Laeta whose Churchill colt was one of last year's good pinhooking results.

“The In The Congo weanlings looks to be early types and this is a pretty nice colt with good strength.”

Lot 75 - In The Congo x Laeta (colt) | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

There are a handful of the first crop of Hitotsu at the sale including Kenmore's filly, Lot 190 who is the second foal for the six time winner Run Pam Run (Sepoy) from the prolific My Tricia (NZ) (Hermes {GB}) family.

“She is a very well put together filly, a very nice mover.”

Bond is pleased with his selection of weanlings by first season stallions, always happy to have them in the Kenmore draft.

“We like to have a few every year,” he said.

He also likes to have the progeny of proven stallions also on offer and Kenmore Lodge certainly have a nice array of those for Sunday with weanlings by So You Think (NZ), Spirit Of Boom, Justify (USA), Tassort, The Autumn Sun and Cool Aza Beel (NZ) as well as a filly by the popular Stay Inside whose first yearlings attracted plenty of attention.

Golden Slipper winners a recipe for stud success

“We love breeding to Golden Slipper winning stallions, especially in their early years,” Bond said, “they always seem to succeed at stud.”

Lot 267 is one of the three Stay Inside fillies at the sale, a daughter of the lightly raced Wannabe Loved (Sebring) whose dam Wannabe Grand (Ire) (Danehill {USA}) won the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket.

The Justify colt, Lot 13, is also highlight of the Kenmore draft with Bond describing him as “another stand-out.”

“He is the first foal for a really nice, city winning Zoustar mare (Free Flying Star),” he said as he waxed lyrical about Justify.

“Kellie and I visited him at Ashford Stud in Kentucky, he has this massive aura about him, he is just an international superstar.”

Gallery: Some of the weanlings by first season sires in the Kenmore Lodge draft, images courtesy of Magic Millions

There is, Bond said, a lot to be said for timing when selling horses and he was pleased to see Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) record such an impressive win in the G2 Champagne Classic at Doomben last weekend with Lot 348 being the only Cool Aza Beel colt in the sale.

A son of the Listed winner Discreet (Show A Heart), he is a colt Bond is looking forward to selling, noting that “any recent success for a stallion helps you in the sales ring.”

Other members of the Kenmore draft likely to prove popular with buyers include Lot 9, a So You Think half-brother to the stakes-placed Blaze A Trail (Criterion) and Lot 333, a The Autumn Sun colt from the family of Pierro.

As well as a couple of youngsters by the stallion Bond describes as “so genuine,” Spirit Of Boom; Lot 19 out of daughter of the dual stakes winner Paprika (General Nediym) and Lot 150 out of a winning daughter of the Listed winner Princess Margaret (Spectrum {Ire}).

Plenty busy!

With a roughly 50/50 split of weanlings being sold on behalf of clients and those out of Kenmore's own mares, the farm has plenty of work on, so much so that the Bonds have not had to actively seek new clients.

“We are already plenty busy enough!” he laughed, adding that selling horses as weanlings does help with the work load, they taking less time to prepare than do the yearlings.

“It is getting harder and harder to get skilled works on board,” he said, though he is pleased to have a group of loyal staff members whilst also having new blood on the horizon.

“We have one of the 'Fast Track' members starting with us next week,” he said.

“They have been in Scone for the last couple of weeks and when they got in touch for us to take someone we were happy to do so. We have trained lots of kids up over the past.”

‘An appetite for more which is really encouraging’: Equate 25 unveils exciting speaker line-up

6 min read
The second annual Equate forum has announced their speakers for the July 24 event to be held at Flemington Racecourse. Designed to help industry participants learn about technology and innovation, the forum includes speakers and workshops, following up on a successful inaugural forum in Scone in 2024.

Following the success of the inaugural Equate forum in Scone in 2024, the second annual forum will be held at Flemington Racecourse on July 24 this year. Equate '25 promises to deliver bold insights at the intersection of artificial intelligence, data analytics, animal welfare and equine performance. A field trip is being planned for Wednesday July 23.

“Around three years ago, I launched Breedr, a digital stallion booking portal but I quickly realised that it was immediately taken up by younger people but there is an inertia around adopting technology across the racing and breeding industry,” said Equate founder Tom Seymour.

“I wanted to try and address that, and so I created Equate, an event designed to grow awareness around existing and future tools to help the industry. I also wanted to showcase all the other talented people who work in the technology space, and all the amazing products and outputs they do across the innovation field. Equate provides a platform to let the industry know about the myriad of little companies like Breedr all fighting the technology headwind.

“I could see what other industries were doing, with investment into innovation and practical tools that were having huge benefits in animal welfare and equally large efficiency gains in labour and workplace safety. That was the key driver for me. In some ways, it was born of frustration through seeing what other industries were doing too.”

Equate 25 keynote speakers

"Equate champions the quiet achievers, the developers, start-ups, vets, breeders, and data specialists, who are building tools that improve care, management, and performance. This isn’t about ego, it’s about betterment for everyone.

"We want to showcase the talent and technology already available in our industry, or thriving in other AgTech sectors. We want the industry to appeal as a career option to the next generation."

The keynote speakers who have been announced for Equate 25 are: Neal French, Director at Google who will speak on the evolution of AI and the next wave of transformational technology; Josh Kadlec-Cavanagh, Head of Data & Performance at Ciaron Maher Racing, talking about how advanced analytics are extending equine athletic performance and durability; and Garnett Hall, Founder of VetChip, on the rise of real-time biometric tracking to improve equine welfare and performance monitoring.

Joining them is Michael Ristuccia, GM of Technology at Tabcorp, outlining what’s next in wagering innovation and how it will reshape the punter experience; and Melissa Green, former Meta executive, on harnessing Facebook and Instagram for modern equine marketing and introducing Meta’s AI-powered wearables set to change horse inspections. Dr John Penry, Principal Scientist at Dairy Australia, will discuss how targeted innovation funding has improved productivity, welfare, and staff retention in dairy, and what the thoroughbred sector can learn.

The day will also feature an innovation yard, showcasing breakthrough products, services and startups reshaping the equine industry.

The inaugural Equate in 24

“Last year, we held the inaugural even in Scone and it was supported by a broad cross section of the industry, all ages and levels of experience, which was exactly what we were trying to achieve. Off the back of last year, we felt there was a tangible shift from audience engagement and a change in perception and an appetite for more which is really encouraging.”

Video: Watch a video of Equate 24 here

Frustration didn’t dampen the enthusiasm

After 2024's successful event, Seymour canvassed the state PRAs and Racing Australia to build support for more. “We optimistically wanted to do a road show and broaden the awareness and reach but unfortunately could not generate a single digit of interest from any our regulators or governing bodies.

"The spirit of collaboration at Equate ’24 was a breath of fresh air. If regulators won’t engage, we’re left with no choice but to push forward together. Equate exists to close that gap, and with the amazing support of some key stakeholders in the industry, we’ve been able to make Equate 25 a reality in Victoria.”

“With the amazing support of some key stakeholders in the industry, we’ve been able to make Equate 25 a reality in Victoria.” - Tom Seymour

On the funding for the event, Seymour was equally as bold. “We’ve strategically not asked the stud farms for money, who sponsor everything in this industry, because we are adamant that this should be an industry funded event. Any other agricultural sector with similar state bodies hold similar events. Dairy Australia hold three of this type of event a year.”

Beef Australia has a massive event once a year, attended by a record 125,000 people in 2024, which includes a technology forum.

“This year is full steam ahead and I’m so grateful to our speakers who have generously donated their time to support the innovation cause and help the industry awaken from its innovation slumber. We want to help both those with existing careers in the industry and also those looking towards us as potential career pathways.

“I’m so grateful to our speakers who have generously donated their time to support the innovation cause and help the industry awaken from its innovation slumber.” - Tom Seymour

Reframing the narrative around technology

Seymour's passion for using technology to improve how people engage with various aspects of the Thoroughbred industry shines in the discussion.

“Just like last year, we will do some workshops so it’s not all just being talked at, and last year people felt these were engaging and they came away with new skills. I’m sympathetic to people who struggle with tech, because if their first experience has been tricky then it’s off-putting to try again. I want people to be encouraged to learn again and have another go at using technology in their world.

“Equate 25 will be the best exposure to what the (technology) landscape will look like in the next five years.” - Tom Seymour

“Equate 25 will be the best exposure to what the (technology) landscape will look like in the next five years, and I believe that will help businesses understand how to plan for their own futures better too.”

Equate 25 isn't just about showcasing the available technology and removing the 'scare' factor for engaging with it. Seymour also wants the industry leaders to engage with technological tools and feels Equate 25 is the place to begin this journey of building solutions that assist everyone.

"There’s a growing disconnect between rule-makers and the people on the ground. Equate creates a neutral, constructive space for all stakeholders to engage. We urgently need to rebalance funding, with less towards endless academic research, and more toward tangible cost-saving tools that help the ‘now’ and sustain our industry into the future."

Racing NSW announces $650,000 flood relief

3 min read

Racing NSW announced a $650,000 Emergency Assistance Package for industry participants affected by the flood disaster occurring near Taree.

One person was confirmed to have died in the flood. On Wednesday afternoon emergency service crews sadly found the body of a 63-year-old man in his home on North Moto Road in Moto, north-east of Taree. “I can't go into the exact details, but SES had been in contact with that male and police obviously had turned up as soon as his body was discovered,” State Emergency Service (SES) Commissioner Mike Wassing told abc.net.au on Thursday.

Another three people are missing in separate incidents in the region. Taree airport has received 491 mm of rain in the past 72 hours, with most of the flooding so far occurring from Taree north, but with rain falling steadily in Sydney on Thursday, the event is expected to worsen across a broader area south of Taree.

The next race meeeting scheduled for the Manning Valley Race Club at Taree is Monday May 26, but this looks unlikely. The Racing NSW emergency package is designed to help those affected by the flood including those who have been impacted by cancelled race meetings and who can’t train horses due to unsafe conditions.

The package includes $500,000 which will distributed to trainers in the impacted regions, with the payment based on the number of horses in work who are unable to train based on the weather conditions. Of this payment, 80 per cent will go to the owners of those horses to help cover training fees, and 20 per cent will be retained by the trainers to offset the loss of income. A further $150,000 will be provided to jockeys who have lost opportunities to ride due to abandoned meetings in the area.

“This initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting the hardworking participants of the NSW racing industry during times of crisis,” said Peter V’landys AM, Chief Executive of Racing NSW in the Racing NSW press release.

“We understand the immense challenges our trainers and jockeys are facing, and we want to play our part to ensure the financial stress is minimal.”

Evacuation centres are open at:

• Dungog RSL Club, Lord Street

• Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club, Parkes Street

• Kempsey Showground, Sea Street in West Kempsey

• Wingham RSL Club, Bent Street

• Club Taree, Wingham Road

• Bulahdelah Golf Club, Recovery Road

• Club Gloucester, Denison Street

• Manning Point Bowling Club, Manning Street

• Panthers Port Macquarie, Bay Street

• Coffs Harbour C.ex, Vernon Street

• Sawtell RSL Club, First Avenue

• Nambucca RSL Club, Nelson Street in Nambucca Heads.

• Old Bar Bowling Club, Belford Street

• Wauchope Showground, High Street

State and federal governments also have disaster relief packages for those affected.

Queen Of Dragons joins Magic Millions Broodmare Sale

On Thursday, Magic Millions announced five supplementary entries to the National Broodmare Sale. The highlight is G3 Magic Millions Mile nominated Queen Of Dragons (Pierro). “It's been a real privilege to be involved with Queen Of Dragons from the very beginning,” Trilogy Racing's Racing and Bloodstock Manager Colum McCulloch told magicmillions.com.au.

“Her winning performance in the G3 Kembla Grange Classic was a standout, stamping her A-grade talent in a key lead-up to the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes, where she finished a close-up fourth behind Orchestral, Tutta La Vita and VRC Oaks winner Zardozi, with less than 1.5l separating her from the placings. For Jason and Melanie Stenning and Sean and Cathy Dingwall, it's a very special moment to offer a mare of her calibre at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.”

The 4-year-old mare has won $320,000 from her two wins and 21 starts and was a $330,000 purchase by Trilogy from Marquee Stud’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale draft. She is a full sister to Group 2 winner Paris D’Or, and her dam Entrancing (Exceed And Excel) is a city-winning half-sister to Group 3-placed Miss West Coast (Safeguard).

The other supplementary entries are stakes placed Avone (Spirit of Boom), stakes placed Ballroom Bella (Russian Revolution), Giliana (Capitalist) and Bella Voce (Fastnet Rock).

Bois d’Argent an honourary Queenslander

He may be European born, but G1 Doomben Cup winner Bois D’Argent (GB) (Toronado {Ire}) is an honourary Queenslander in the eyes of his owners. “We think of ourselves as Queenslanders, we are a bit like Bois D'Argent – we were not born here but we have become part of the furniture here in Queensland,” syndicator Grant Morgan told racingqueensland.com.au.

“We are very proud to have the majority of our horses in Queensland – it is our home – and we are proud to play a good part in the winter carnival each year. Our owners are spread out across Australia, but they are predominantly in Queensland. There will be a big lot of them at Doomben on Saturday, just as there was last year.”

Annabel and Rob Archibald's Brisbane-based assistant trainer Todd Pollard thinks Bois d’Argent is a good chance for the double. “Grant and his team have been fantastic and we have been lucky to have Bois D'Argent who has really gone on it with since he has been here. He has been a really nice horse for the stable.

“It would mean a great deal for us to win the race again as this year’s edition is much harder than 2024. He is going to have to go up to another level, but he does not know how to run a bad race this guy, he tries his heart out and I am sure he will do the same this year.”

Racing NSW's new Chairman of Stewards

On Thursday, Racing NSW announced the appointment of Tom Moxon as Chairman of Stewards, effective from 1 June 2025. “Tom is a highly respected figure within the industry and has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout his tenure with Racing NSW,” said Racing NSW Chief Executive, Peter V’landys AM.

“His appointment ensures continuity and strong oversight in maintaining the high level of integrity that Racing NSW prides itself on, being the benchmark in world racing.” Moxon has previously served under past Chairmen of Stewards Ray Murrihy, Marc Van Gestel and Steve Railton serving as his Deputy Chairman of Stewards since November 2022.

Current Chairman of Stewards Steve Railton will remain at Racing NSW moving into a mentorship role. “Steve Railton is a Group 1 human being and has provided diligent and conscientious service to the racing industry throughout his distinguished career,” said V’landys AM.

“Steve has made a significant contribution to Racing NSW during his tenure as Chairman of Stewards, and we are delighted that he will remain involved in a key mentorship role to continue to provide his experience to the broader integrity team.”

Financially Famous ready for National

Trainer Louise White is excited to run 2-year-old filly Financially Famous (Toronado {Ire}) in Friday night’s $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic. “She's only a little horse but she has a lot of attitude,” White told racenet.com.au.

“Everything she's done from the get-go, she's taken that extra step. She's always given us a good feeling. That first-up win (at Eagle Farm) wasn't a massive surprise. You can look at the odds and everything but she was nominated for the Percy Sykes Stakes, she was paid up for that.”

Jennilala arrives well in Queensland

Trainer Gavin Bedggood is pleased with Jennilala (Shalaa {Ire}) ahead of Saturday’s G3 Magic Millions Mile at Doomben. “She's continued to eat well, she's travelled in great order,” Bedggood told racing.com.

“It was a longer journey than what I'd anticipated, but she hasn't missed a beat since arriving. She went back to Tony (Ottbre)'s farm for a quiet week there and we've sort of had her back the last three weeks and been able to tighten to the screws.

Gavin Bedggod | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

“She also knocked her head coming out of the barriers (last start) and needed to get a couple of staples above her eye. She wasn't beaten far, but I think she's better than what her run was. Without having a good look yet, there didn't look to be a lot of speed on paper, so she probably lands in that first-four position in running. We've added a set of winkers to her gear this week, but in an ideal world you'd love to see something roll along and she can just sort of get a camp on one.”

Reminder of RV drought package

Racing Victoria's drought relief package applications close soon. “Successful drought relief support package applicants will receive a one time payment of $500 per Stud Book registered thoroughbred (up to a maximum of $10,000 per individual recipient) for the provision of feed for pasture fed thoroughbreds,” said the press release.

“I hope the drought relief support package can go some way to assist those with pasture fed thoroughbreds who are facing challenges as a result of the dry conditions, and allow them some additional time to plan and consider their options, such as rehoming,” RV General Manager, Equine Welfare, Melissa Ware said.

“I encourage those in the 12 eligible Local Government Areas to apply for the drought relief support package. Our equine welfare team will be on hand to discuss with the applicant their individual circumstances to understand their requirements and answer any questions people may have about the support on offer.

“For those not eligible and seeking emergency assistance, we encourage them to still reach out to us as we may be able to assist through our other safety net programs.”

The package is available to successful applicant who live in one of the 12 eligible LGAs and applications must be submitted before June 30.

First Australian winner for Admire Mars

Juvenile gelding Planet Red (Admire Mars {Jpn}) won on debut at Pakenham’s night meeting on Thursday night to become the first Southern Hemisphere winner for his first season sire. Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent (Jnr), he won by 0.75l for jockey Beau Mertens. Admire Mars (Jpn) has sired Group 1 winner Embroidery (Jpn) in his first Northern Hemisphere crop as well as Listed winner Namura Clara (Jpn).

Sold by Kenmore Lodge for $100,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to pinhooker Ohukia Lodge, who on-sold him at the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale to his trainers for NZ$260,000.

Planet Red is the third foal and first winner for Lucky Helmet (Helmet) whose first two foals are placed. Lucky Helmet is a winning half-sister to Group 3 winner Flying Mascot (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) and Listed winner Koala Bear (Exceed And Excel).

Around the nation: Thursday’s highlights

Racing fans enjoyed five meetings on Thursday. In WA, at Pinjarra, jockey Brad Parnham rode a treble on Kermelia (Kermadec {NZ}), Grand Reserve (Maschino), and 3-year-old filly Kimberley Rose (Hellbent).

Rain shouldn’t affect Randwick’s Saturday meeting

With 70 mm forecast for the week leading in Saturday’s Randwick meeting, course manager Michael Wood thinks the track will be able to be use on Saturday. “The water is moving off the track as well as it ever has,” Wood told racenet.com.au.

“We are on the back of a track renovation after the autumn carnival which helps and there is no surface water on the track. Saturday's meeting is in no doubt at this stage. I'm not too worried about rain during the week so if the forecast is right and we don't get any rain on Saturday, then we will have no problem going ahead with the Randwick meeting.”

Espana to debut on Saturday

Trainers Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans will debut juvenile filly Espana (Capitalist) at Sandown on Saturday. “We've got a bit of an opinion of her, hence why she's in Saturday's race with a few other 2-year-old races around. We are aware she's a first starter and there's some nice handy horses in the race,” Yeomans told racing.com.

“We're happy with her and if she brings her trackwork and jumpout form to the races, she will be right up there. She's an impressive type and as she's a chestnut filly by Capitalist, she has an opinion of herself, so we took her to Julien Welsh to help her with her barrier manners. She's on her best behaviour now. We're very aware how tough it is but it's too good an opportunity for her if she can run top three and make her valuable.” Raced by her breeder Newgate Farm, Espana is a full sister to Group 3-placed Latizia.

German Derby winner to make Aussie debut

Ciaron Maher will unveil 2022 G1 Deutsches Derby winner and now 6-year-old entire Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) on Saturday. “Ciaron has done it plenty of times with those types of horses going back three, four, five years,” assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told racenet.com.au.

“He's an interesting horse, (99 rating) is reasonable, it's going to be interesting how that German form ties in. We've had some of our riders on him and Ethan (Brown) had a sit on him recently and said he gave him a feel, that's what you want to hear. He's definitely one of those staying horses that could do anything, especially this time of year … you know he's got the stamina, he's just got to get the first half right.” Sammarco was passed in at the 2023 Arqana Arc De Triomphe Sale of horses in training.

Jack Turnbull

“Our plan is to pick through winter, he'll probably go through the Banjo Paterson Series and then all being well you're at the doorstep of spring (race) fit. He will be regulation four to five weeks every run, emulating that European style … he's not young, he's seasoned and we can't reinvent the wheel running every two weeks.” He won four of his first five starts including two Group 1 races in Germany, and later added a Listed win in Italy.

Own The Morning events

Racing Queensland are hosting two ‘Own the Morning’ events at the upcoming Magic Millions National Sale. One will be held on Friday May 23 at 10am on the sale ground, hosted by trainer Maddy Sears and Magic Millions Bloodstock Consultant Georgia Everingham. The other will be Tuesday May 27 ahead of the broodmare sale and will hosted by Star Thoroughbreds' Denise Martin.

McColm moves north

Murwillumbah trainer David McColm is moving to the Gold Coast in July to help give his son Archie a good start as a jockey. “I’ve got 10 horses in work at Murwillumbah and I’ve been here for 30 years,” McColm told racingqueensland.com.au.

“But, from July, I’ll be training at the Gold Coast which means Far Too Easy won’t be eligible for The Kosciuszko as it’s a race for NSW-trained horses only. There’s a few reasons for the move but primarily it’s for Archie. Archie is just starting up his apprenticeship and I think it’s best for him to be in an area which is more expansive. The Gold Coast is going well and in around five years it will be the epicentre for racing.”

Far Too Easy (All Too Hard) is being aimed at the G1 Stradbroke and runs in Saturday’s G3 BRC Sprint. “He doesn’t have to win (on Saturday) but so long as he performs well, he’ll go to the Stradbroke next. If he doesn’t then we’ll probably look at the Eye Liner at Ipswich and the Glasshouse at the Sunshine Coast. I’m praying for a bit of rain as he loves the wet but the forecast doesn’t look promising.”

The Boss Lady to take on West Star

The Boss Lady (Street Boss {USA}) has been one of WA’s better sprinters this season, and the 4-year-old mare takes on boom 3-year-old West Star (Playing God) in Saturday’s Listed Belmont Sprint. “It’s a good field, but West Star was pretty dominant the other day,” trainer Michael Lane told racingwa.com.au.

“I had never seen the horse before, but he’s a cracking type. He’s the one to beat, I suppose. It’s a pretty honest field, but we get the barrier in our favour. Hopefully we can be in front of them. I’m happy with her leading into the race. She’ll be thereabouts on Saturday.”

Rooke heads to Australia

English jockey George Rooke has been enjoying riding in New Zealand and his successes there have led to an offer to ride Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained She’s A Dealer (Ace High) at Randwick on Saturday ahead of a tilt at the G1 Queensland Oaks. “This is my first time riding in Australia, so it’s a big ask and I have been trusted, so hopefully we can deliver and it’s a good day. I will walk it (Randwick track) tomorrow (Friday) and see what it’s like,” Rooke told Loveracing.nz.

“She won at Ellerslie on a Soft 5, and she won quite impressively. It will be very Soft ground (on Saturday) and we have got a good draw, so it gives me options, and going further will suit. Everything is in plan for her to run a good race.

She's A Dealer | Image courtesy of Kenton Wright (Race Images)

“I have been here (in New Zealand) seven months now and it has been very good to me, I love it. I am getting a lot more opportunities and I am riding better horses. I am really looking forward to Saturday. This will be my third country I have ridden in – England, New Zealand and Australia.”

Voyage Bubble relaxed ahead of Champions & Chater Cup

Trainer Ricky Yiu thinks Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) can handle the 2400 metres of the G1 Champions & Chater Cup. “The closer to the race and the more I look at this horse, I think he can absolutely handle the trip,” Yiu told scmp.com.

“Compared to last year or when he won the Derby over 2000 metres, he’s so relaxed now. We’re only talking about 400 metres more in a small field with a jockey who knows him well. He’s going really well. He’ll be a really good chance.”

Richards fined for not reporting lameness

Trainer Jamie Richards was fined HK$100,000 (AU$19,800) by Hong Kong stewards for not reporting that Celestial Colours (Zoustar) “sustained an injury to its right fore leg when it competed in batch one of the Conghua barrier trials on May 13.” The horse has been retired. “In determining penalty, the stewards took into consideration his clean record in approximately 13 years of training racehorses, the nature and circumstances of the breach and that Mr Richards had, prior to May 13, been providing the appropriate veterinary care to the horse,” said Jockey Club chief steward Marc van Gestel in a statement.

Double for Yip at Happy Valley

Trainer Dennis Yip enjoyed a double at Happy Valley, while David Hayes scored a winner to cut his gap in the Trainer’s Championship down to five from leader John Size. Yip won with Thriving Brothers (Ire) (U S Navy Flag {USA}) and Lean Master (GB) (Havana Gray {GB}). “It was a nice win and (Lean Master) is a nice horse, but this race the rating is 43 to 54, so it’s not strong,” Yip told scmp.com.

“But I think my horse is very honest at the 1000 metres and 1200 metres at Happy Valley because the shorter straight is better for him.”

France Galop cuts prizemoney by €20 million annually

France Galop has announced a “major recovery plan” in a bid to shore up the country's racing industry in the face of falling turnover from the PMU. From July 1, prize-money will be reduced by €10.5 million (AU$18.4 million) for the remainder of 2025 – representing a drop of 3.6 per cent. From 2026, there will be savings of €20.3 million (AU$35.6 million) on prize-money, a drop of 6.9 per cent. Group 1 races will however remain unaffected.

France Galop president Guillaume de Saint-Seine presented the changes to his committee and board on May 20. A statement released by France Galop pointed to the cuts also being made on the management and administrative side, amounting to a further €20 million (AU$35 million), following a year-on-year drop of 4 per cent in betting turnover.

The statement read, “The economic effort will be gradual and shared between the parent company and all stakeholders, both professional and institutional. On the one hand, France Galop will evolve its operational model and costs. On the other hand, the level of incentives will be adjusted. The sum of these actions — both recovery and management — will enable the sector to return to balance by 2029.

“This plan is imperative, at a time when the PMU's trajectory has been on a downward trend for several months and when the new actions undertaken by the betting operator (particularly in the sports sector) will not bear immediate fruit.”

Shes Perfect appeal unsuccessful

Connections of Shes Perfect (Ire) (Sioux Nation {USA}) have been unsuccessful in their appeal to have the result of last week's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches overturned, meaning that Francis Graffard's Zarigana (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) remains the winner.

The Charlie Fellowes-trained Shes Perfect passed the post first at ParisLongchamp, a nose ahead of hot favourite Zarigana, but the placings were reversed after the pair came close together over a furlong out, with the French officials deciding the interference was enough to have affected the result.

Zarigana's jockey Mickael Barzalona also dropped his whip in the closing stages and then proceeded to slap his mount on the neck as a form of encouragement, raising concerns from Fellowes and Shes Perfect's owners, the Basher Watts Syndicate. However, after hearing the appeal on Tuesday, France Galop confirmed no change to the Classic result on Wednesday.

“I didn't really know what to expect, I think it was a really difficult decision to make,” Fellowes said. “You only have to look at the comments on social media, it really was 50-50. Some thought it was incredibly harsh and some thought it was a fair outcome.

“That was probably a fair reflection on the incident, the front-on camera looks awful but from the camera behind and overhead it looks as if she's done very little. It was a very, very hard case and I'm sure it wasn't a decision that was taken lightly.

“Obviously I'm absolutely gutted, it's a very big deal for my yard. I've got 40 horses in and to win a Classic, a Group 1, is huge for us and to have it taken away under these circumstances is difficult.”

Goffs release inaugural breeze up catalogue

The catalogue for the inaugural Goffs Classic Breeze-Up Sale, which features progeny of stallions like Sea The Stars (Ire), Night Of Thunder (Ire), Havana Grey (GB) and more, has been released.

A select offering of 62 juveniles will go under the hammer at Kildare Paddocks on Saturday, June 28 during Ireland's premier Classic weekend, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby. The breeze itself is set to take place at Naas racecourse on Monday, June 23.

Speaking about the release of the catalogue, Goffs chief Henry Beeby said, “Goffs Classic Breeze-Up was positioned from the outset as a premium sale for quality, later maturing 2-year-olds and we are proud to present a catalogue that we believe fulfils this ambition with a sire profile that would be the envy of any breeze-up sale in Europe.”

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper that has shown promise or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting 3-year-old runners are racing across Australia on Friday. At the Gold Coast, a promising Wootton Bassett (GB) colt looks to kick off his career with maiden success, and Geelong is the venue for well-bred 3-year-old geldings by Toronado (Ire) and I Am Invincible to battle it out.

Providence, 2-year-old colt (Wootton Bassett (GB) x Southbank {Fastnet Rock})

Gold Coast’s Friday meeting will serve as the venue for the debut of Providence, a well-bred son of Wootton Bassett (GB), trained by Chris Waller. He has shown promise at the trials and looks well placed to put in a big performance on debut.

Providence is out of the talented mare Southbank (Fastnet Rock), she may have only won one race but she was very classy placing in the G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude, and the G1 Thousand Guineas.

Providence’s grandam is Rezoned (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), she was a Group 3 winner on the track and also is a full sister to Preferment (NZ) who was a dual Group 1 winner and now stands at stud at Brighthill Farm in New Zealand.

Southbank, since producing Providence, has left a Too Darn Hot (GB) weanling filly, and was subsequently served by Zoustar last spring.

Providence was purchased for $625,000 by China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Geelong, Race 2, 12.55pm AEDT, Beach Hotel Jan Juc Maiden Plate, $27,000, 1443m

Cologne, 3-year-old gelding (I Am Invincible x Faint Perfume {Shamardal {USA}})

Cologne, a son of I Am Invincible, will have his second start for trainers Ben, Will and JD Hayes at Geelong over 1443 metres on Friday. He ran a very good race for second on debut at Sale on May 4 behind Sunshine Jenni (The Autumn Sun).

This promising gelding is out of the super talented filly Faint Perfume (Shamardal {USA}). She was victorious in the G1 VRC Oaks and the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes as well as another two Group 2 races.

I Am Invincible | Standing at Yarraman Park Stud

She has already proven to be a successful broodmare leaving the G2 Adelaide Cup winner Good Idea (So You Think {NZ}), and the G3 Grand Prix Stakes winner Chains Of Honour (Redoute’s Choice).

Faint Perfume has since produced a 2-year-old named Our Lurrina (Wootton Bassett {GB}), a yearling filly by Wootton Bassett, and was last spring served by Chaldean (GB).

Cologne was purchased for $500,000 by Peter Morgan at the 2022 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud, before he was withdrawn from the 2023 Inglis Ausralian Easter Yearling Sale.

Il Cielo, 3-year-old gelding (Toronado (Ire) x Cielo Stellato (NZ) {Charm Spirit {Ire}})

Il Cielo, a son of Swettenham Stud’s outstanding stallion Toronado (Ire) will be running at Geelong over 1443 metres for trainer Ciaron Maher on Friday. He has been very genuine in his career so far placing three times and he definitely deserves to taste maiden success.

This promising gelding is the first foal from the Charm Spirit (Ire) mare Cielo Stellato (NZ) who was a winner at 1100 metres at Moe.

Toronado (Ire) | Standing at Swettenham Stud

Cielo Stellato is a half-sister to Take The Rap (NZ) - St Rap (H.K) (No Excuse Needed {GB}) who was successful in the G3 CS Hayes Stakes, the talented G1 NZ 2000 Guineas winner Madison County (NZ) (Pins) also features close up in the pedigree.

Cielo Stellato’s further progeny include a yearling filly by Wooded (Ire) and a weanling filly by Earthlight (Ire).

Looking Back

Botanical Boy (Super Seth) - won very nicely on debut at Pakenham, he ran on very strongly from last tand looked good doing it.

Planet Red (Admire Mars {Jpn}) - was very impressive winning on debut at Pakenham, he really attacked the line well in an impressive debut performance.
