Top Lots: Yulong spend big on Day 2, especially on Samantha Miss family

9 min read
With 24 fillies and mares making $1 million or more across the two days of selling, the second day once again proved strong with Group 2-placed Call Di, a Frankel daughter of Champion racemare Samantha Miss leading the day’s offerings at $2.1 million. Her unraced half-sister also made seven figures to the same buyer, Yulong.

Lot 948 – Call Di (Frankel (GB) – Samantha Miss {Redoute’s Choice}) - $2.1 million to Yulong

A full sister to Group 2 winner Miss Fabulass (Frankel {GB}), 5-year-old mare Call Di was an excellent race mare, running third in the Listed Reginald Arnold Handicap at her second start, before winning over 1400 metres in Sydney at her third start. Trainer Joe Pride pushed her into strong company and she added group placings in the G3 Angus Armanasco Stakes at three and the G2 Hot Danish Stakes at four.

“It’s good to be able to breed up a family and she’s by a champion sire, out of a (mare by a) champion sire, her granddam’s a champion sire and she’s in-foal to champion sire. She’s a lovely mare and I’m sure she’ll leave a very, very nice Extreme Choice,” said Yulong’s Sam Fairgray.

“On race performance, I followed her racing career and you probably didn’t see the best of her on the track. She had very, very good ability.”

Yulong also spent $1.25 million on day two to buy her unraced half-sister Miss Enfield (I Am Invincible) in foal to Wootton Bassett (GB). “They’re two very similar types, so we’ll get them back to the farm and foal them down.”

She was sold in foal to Extreme Choice. “He’s an amazing stallion. If he didn’t have his fertility issues, he’d be a sensation. It’d be lovely if we get a couple of colts out of the three mares in-foal to Extreme Choice but the boss is very fond on him and we’ve got his dam at the farm at home as well, so we’ve got a few sisters to Extreme Choice.”

Call Di’s dam Champion 3YO Filly and triple Group 1 winner Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice) lit up the sale ring herself, selling for $3.85 million at the 2009 Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale. She’d previously been a $1.5 million yearling. This is the family of G1 Adelaide Cup winner Cronus (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and his Group 2 winning full sister Pravda (NZ) who famously refused to go to the start of the G1 Melbourne Cup and had to be scratched.

Lot 920 – Aristia (Lonhro - Nakaaya {Tiger Hill (Ire)}) - $1.45 million to Yulong

G1 Victoria Oaks winner Aristia (Lonhro) will join the outstanding broodmare band at Yulong, and the 9-year-old mare has an unraced 2-year-old colt named Staristia (Zoustar) and a yearling filly by Maurice (Jpn). She is in foal to I Am Invincible.

“Once we saw her we knew we loved her. She is in-foal to ‘Vinnie’ and has got a good first foal by Zoustar. Lonhro is a very good mare sire and (she is) the perfect suit for Alabama Express,” said Jun Zhang. Alabama Express has sired Yulong’s G1 Victoria Oaks winner Treasurethe Moment, so it looks highly logical for them to send a winner of the same race to him.

“She was on our first list. We are always searching for good mares.”

Staristia was sold by Vinery Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $725,000 to Equine Investments and Bevan Smith Bloodstock. He is in work with trainer Liam Howley and ran second in a trial in March. C Ramsay purchased the yearling Maurice (Jpn) filly for $450,000 from Vinery’s 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale draft.

Aristia is a half-sister to thrilling sprinter and Group 1 winner Marabi (I Am Invincible), and both are out of Group 2 winner Nakaaya (Tiger Hill {Ire}).

Lot 716 - Lazzago (Capitalist x Lake Como (NZ) {Pins}) - $1.4 million to RMA Bloodstock/Paul Frampton

Offered by Widden Stud, G2 Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Lazzago (Capitalist), in foal to Zoustar, was purchased back by her breeder Robert Anderson’s RMA Bloodstock for $1.4 million. He sold her, via Widden Stud, at the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for $460,000 to Woppitt Bloodstock and she was trained by Chris Waller in her juvenile season.

Winner of two races that season, she was offered for sale at the 2024 Inglis June Digital Sale by Coolmore Stud on behalf of her racing owner, where she was bought by King’s Bloodstock for $650,000. She had one more start, running fifth in the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes before heading to Widden to be covered by Zoustar.

“It’s a great result, obviously in-foal to Zoustar. Super-exciting mare, she was so quick, she ran in the Slipper and she got impeded when Learning To Fly hit the deck that year. She came back and she had the credentials of a mare well-suited to Zoustar,” said Widden’s Matt Comerford.

After failing to finish in the G1 Golden Slipper, Lazzago had nine more starts, running second in the G3 Peter Le Grand Stakes at three.

“(She’d had) one cover early enough, she’s a straight-forward mare and she’s let down into a beautiful mare. There was a lot of interest in her and I think she was great buying, in fairness. I know it’s a lot of money, but mares like her were making that yesterday but she’s already in-foal and on the way.”

Lazzago is the second foal of seven-race winner Lake Como (NZ) (Pins) who has left two other winners and has an unraced 2-year-old colt by Zoustar, a yearling colt by Bivouac and a weanling colt by Zoustar.

Lake Como is a half-sister to dual Listed winner Taameer (NZ) (General Nediym), dam of stakes winners Khulaasa (Epualette) and Bulbula (Shamardal {USA}), dam of Group 2 winner and young sire Doull as well as Group 3 winner Aryaaf (Epaulette).

Lot 660 – Finepoint (Pins – Zarzuela (NZ) {Zabeel {NZ}}) - $1.3 million to Yulong

Yulong added the fourth top priced mare of the day to their collection with Group 2-placed Finepoint (Pins) in foal to Extreme Choice.

“She was a beautiful physical and I think the mating will really suit her. She was a nice big mare with good length about her and quality and Extreme Choice probably just needs a mare with that,” said Sam Fairgray.

“She’s free of Danehill, there are a lot of stakes winners on the page, so she’s a nice mare. We try and look at a mare and see where we’re likely to send her and she’s a mare that we might send to Growing Empire. Physically she’ll suit him. There’s a few nice crosses there and the pedigree, so that’s the likely mating for her.”

A half-sister to Group 3 winner Serious Satire (More Than Ready {USA}), Finepoint is out of Zabeel (NZ)’s dual Group 2 winner Zarzuela (NZ), who in turn is a daughter of Group 1 winner Star Satire (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}). Recent Listed winning juvenile and second in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes I Am Unstoppable (I Am Invincible) is also in this family.

Growing Empire is a son of Zoustar who is out of a Snitzel mare and we all know how well Snitzel/Danehill goes with Zabeel.

Lot 718 – Liliesformillie (USA) (Pioneerof The Nile (USA) – Tiger Cat Lilly (USA) {Tale Of The Cat (USA)}) - $1.3 million to Astute Bloodstock/Cressfield

An American Listed winner as a 2-year-old and by the sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (USA), Liliesformillie (USA) (Pioneerof The Nile {USA}) is in foal to Too Darn Hot (GB) making the upcoming foal a truly international product. She was purchased by Cressfield for $1.3 million along with Astute Bloodstock.

“I came here to buy an in-foal mare. I wasn’t here to buy racefillies. I lost three Group 1 mares last year - two through colic and one through a bleeding attack which we couldn’t stop. I had to replace them and this is a step towards that,” said Cressfield’s Bruce Neill.

“She’s a gorgeous mare and she rated very highly. It is a a good page and well known in Australia with the second dam. Tale Of The Cat is a broodmare sire. He’s been successful. It worked well. Plus the cover. There aren’t going to be too many Too Darn Hots available this year. There will be next season.

Liliesformillie is out of Listed winner Tiger Cat Lilly (USA) (Tale Of The Cat {USA}) who in turn is out of Listed winner Feisty Princess (USA) (Indian Charlie {USA}), making Tiger Cat Lilly a half-sister to dual Group 2 winner Gypsy Robin (USA) (Dahaar {Can}) who is the dam of Group 1 winner and young sire Wild Ruler and his half-sister Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Pavitra (American Pharoah {USA}).

On the three mares that Cressfield lost recently, they were all brilliant mares. “I lost Pippie which was a serious loss. I got $1.4 million for her I Am Invincible filly at Easter and $775,000 for her first filly which has one start for one win - city class maiden. I’ve got a colt by I Am Invincible on the ground but that was Pippie.

“I lost Secret Agenda. Again, a good producing mare. Group 1 winner, and I lost Midsummer Music, mother of Stefi Magnetic. That is three serious losses for a farm. I’ve only for a 25 broodmare band and I lost the cream.”
