At A Glance
The 2025 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale concluded on Wednesday after two days of selling. The catalogue of 557 lots (down from 641 in 2024 which took three days) had a clearance rate of 77 per cent (down from 83 per cent in 2024).
With 356 lots sold, less than the 472 sold in 2024, the aggregate of $88,319,500 was down on the 2024 gross of $97,610,000.
The average of $248,088 was up on 2024’s average price of $206,801, while the median of $90,000 was similar to last year’s median of $95,000.
With 24 fillies and mares making seven figures, this was a gain on 2024 where 15 horses sold for for $1 million or more.
Newgate Consignment was the leading vendor for the sale, selling 57 broodmares for $25 million at an impressive average of $439,000, ahead of the sale average. Chris Waller Racing led the vendors by average with 12 sales averaging $794,000 for a gross of $9.5 million.
Zoustar was the leading covering sire by gross, with nine mares in foal to him selling for a total of $6.6 million. Extreme Choice was the most popular covering sire by average, with four mares selling in foal to him for an average of $1.2 million and a gross of $4.8 million.
Yulong was the leading buyer over the two days, spending $12.79 million on 10 broodmares and race fillies. Coolmore’s Tom Magnier pipped Yulong in the average spend stakes, paying an average of $2.9 million for three mares, led by the $5.25 million for Zougotcha on the first day.
Extreme achievements lead to extreme demand
Newgate Farm's high achieving stallion Extreme Choice served 97 mares last spring 27 of them already returned as not having foals. Five of the lucky breeders who gained positive tests for their mares chose to put those girls through the ring on Wednesday and they were well rewarded with Yulong Investments taking particular interest.
Which is not surprising considering the success they have enjoyed with the breed with their $1.4 million Magic Millions purchase Devil Night winning the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes at just his second start; following that with a tough fifth off a wide run in the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes.

“He is a phenomenal stallion for what he can do with small numbers,” Yulong's Sam Fairgray said of the G1 Blue Diamond and G1 Moir Stakes winner. “If he didn’t have his fertility issues, he’d be a sensation.”

“It would be lovely if we get a couple of colts out of the three mares in foal to Extreme Choice,” he said, adding that “the boss is very fond of him and we’ve got his dam at the farm at home as well.”
Yulong purchased Extreme Choice's unraced dam Extremely (Hussonet) for $735,000 seven years ago and have fared well with her progeny in the sales ring.

Newgate's Henry Field was pleased to see international competition on the mares in foal to Extreme Choice who he described as “one of the world's truly elite sires.”
“Yulong have been keen and there have been bidders from a number of different countries on them today. He has international appeal and it is great for the industry to have a stallion of his calibre. They are very rare and very few and far between and we're honoured to have him standing at Newgate.”
“The mares in the draft in foal to him are very high level mares, beautiful types with great pedigrees. It is no surprise that there was such great competition on them all.”

The dearest of the Yulong purchases was Lot 948 Call Di (Frankel {GB}), a three time Group placed city winning daughter of the triple Group 1 winner Samantha Miss (Redoute's Choice), a $2.1 million purchase from the Newgate Consignment.
Another seven figure Yulong buy from Newgate was Lot 660, the $1.3 million mare Finepoint (Pins), another three time Group placed metropolitan winner out of a high class mare, her dam being the triple Group winner Zarzuela (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).

Also from the Newgate draft was Lot 792, the unplaced mare Ravisher (I Am Invincible) who had a $900,000 price tag. She is a daughter of the high class broodmare Beauty World (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who has been so well represented by five stakes winners.
Mates already in mind
Whilst many buyers put their hands up now and think about matings later, there are always plenty of breeders at this sort of sale buying mares with a particular stallion in mind.
Such buyers were busy on Wednesday, such as Yulong who were happy to share the spring plans for their new purchases.
Lot 660 Finepoint (Pins), a $1.3 million purchase, is a likely mating for the farm's first season stallion Growing Empire with Sam Fairgray noting that “physically she will suit him. And there are a few nice crosses in the pedigree.”

Yulong also took home Lot 920, paying $1.45 million the G1 VRC Oaks heroine Aristia (Lonhro). “Once we saw her we knew we loved her,” Jun Zhang said, adding that “she is perfectly suited to Alabama Express.”
Lot 842 Stellar Pauline (Not A Single Doubt) was secured by Widden Stud for $1.15 million with Antony Thompson confident that she will match up nicely with Zoustar.
“We've had a lot of luck with Not A Single Doubt mares to Zoustar and her dam sire Red Ransom (USA) has certainly worked with him as well. I thought she was the perfect mare for Zoustar,” he said, also happy to find a mare in foal to I Am Invincible.
Also in foal to that superstar stallion was Lot 885, the G1 Railway Stakes winner Volpe Veloce (Foxwedge) purchased from the Longwood Thoroughbred Farm draft for $1 million by Trives Bloodstock.

“She been purchased for Dany Molloy,” David Johnson said. “He has a chunk of Southport Tycoon and I don’t know whether she'll go there, but the mares we’ve been buying for Danny up to this point have been slated for that.”
Lot 892 the G3 Red Roses Stakes winner Written Beauty (Written Tycoon) bought for $1.1 million by Kia Ora Stud from Newgate was purchased with the farm's own stallion in mind. “She'll go straight to Farnan,” Shane Wright said. “He suits her very well and she was bought for him.”
The commercial appeal of American-bred mares
The progeny of American bred mares have been popular with buyers in recent years and the well credentialled ones certainly had their admirers on Wednesday with three particularly strong results.
The biggest of those was Lot 718, Liliesformillie (USA) (Pioneerof The Nile {USA}), a $1.3 million mare from the family of Wild Ruler purchased from Newgate by Astute Bloodstock (FBAA)/Cressfield.

Sold in foal to Too Darn Hot (GB), the lightly raced (two wins from four starts) Listed winning 5-year-old appealled to Cressfield's Bruce Neil who was seeking to increase his expecting broodmare having had a run of bad luck losing three Group 1 winners last spring; Pippie (Written Tycoon), Midsummer Music (Oamaru Force) and Secret Agenda (Not A Single Doubt).
“She is a gorgeous mare who rated very highly,” he said, adding that he liked the influence of an American horse in her pedigree, her dam sire Tale Of The Cat (USA). “He has been successful here, he has worked well.”
Another mare in foal to Too Darn Hot was also popular, Lot 710 Lady Edith (USA) (Street Boss {USA}) sold by Newgate to Silverdale Farm/Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA) for $900,000.
“The mare had to stack up on her own but certainly Too Darn Hot enhanced the situation,” Silverdale's Rob Petith said, describing his purchase as “a beautiful, fast mare by a stallion who is obviously well known in Australia.”
“American mares are going well here and she was a stand-out,” he added.
Also faring well in the ring was Lot 705, Lime Country Thoroughbreds selling their flashy chestnut Kela's Turn (USA) (Kela {USA}) for $300,000 to Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA). The four time stakes winner was sold in foal to Shinzo.
Newgate account for roughly 30% of the gross
“Delighted with today's trade” was Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch's take after another big day of selling at the Gold Coast, noting that a has been in the trend in recent times the high end mares were in great demand.
“At most levels it was solid bidding but at the top level I thought it was incredible,” he said.

“We've had the second most million dollar mares we've ever had at this sale,” he said, pointing out that only the year of the Shadwell dispersal (2021) had more.
Bowditch was also understandably excited by a marked increase of over $40,000 on the average, describing that result as “massive.”
“I think people that have trusted the system and trusted what Magic Millions have provided in the past have been very well rewarded.”

“Newgate in particular, they've had an outstanding two day sale. They've sold around 30 percent of the gross; Henry Field and his team have been rewarded in spades for having the confidence to bring a massive team of mares here.”

The range of buyers in force also pleased Bowditch.
“There was a great cross section,” he said whilst also happy with the major spenders such as Yulong who he described as “an incredible component to the industry and the market globally.”
“They were the leading buyer but the depth in the market and the diversity was what pleased the team the most.”
