Lot: 1119 – bay filly (Stay Inside x Gem Of Scotland {Rothesay})- $60,000
Buyer: Curtis Racing
Vendor: Daandine Stud
Daandine Stud bred and sold Written Tycoon and his sons Southport Tycoon and Capitalist, as well as Listed winner Isotope (Deep Field) from only a small group of broodmares each year. One of those broodmares is Listed-placed Gem Of Scotland (Rothesay), who won her first four starts in succession at two, then was second in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes. Back at three, she trained on to add a couple more victories and another stakes placing when third in the Listed Silk Stocking Handicap.
Lot 1119 is her first foal, by first season sire and G1 Golden Slipper Stakes winner Stay Inside, so the filly should be expected to be a precocious type.

“We tried to buy a Stay Inside at January and just kept getting blown out of the water and we had a bigger budget there at that sale, but they were just out of reach for us. We were pretty keen to buy one and she came up,” said Cherie Curtis.
“We love horses out of black-type mares. You look at her pedigree and she’s a first foal out of a Rothesay mare, the mare won six races and four in a row at two. She was a speedster and she’s got a bit of black type as well. We love buying fillies for residual value too. And by a stallion like him, who is very exciting. Obviously we don’t know what he’s going to do, but his average was around $300,000 at January.

Curtis felt the filly was great value, partly due to the sale’s vibe on the ground. “It’s a relatively quiet sale, and we would’ve been prepared to pay more for her. We just thought it was a good opportunity at that price.
“Sometimes you can buy horses that you really like and you get no action on the email, but when owners see you’ve bought something that’s massive value like she is, she’s been quite popular already.
“She has all that stuff I love to see, with all those sprinting type stallions on the page. She’s a sprinting type, very neat and has got all the framework, a lovely filly and her temperament is awesome. I think we were surprised we were able to get her. She’s incredible value. She’ll be up on our website today with shares available.”

Gem Of Scotland was purchased by Daandine Farm in foal to Stay Inside for $350,000 at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2023. She has a weanling filly by Better Than Ready and is in foal to Spirit Of Boom. Gem Of Scotland is out of unraced General Nediym mare Star Of Kristle, whose five foals to race were all winners, and is from the family of Written Tycoon.
