Foal Focus: 'That’s two very good foals in a row!'

In today’s Foal Focus, Segenhoe Stud’s Peter O’Brien is eager to show off the second foal from stakes-placed sprinting mare Jolina, a filly by Ozzmosis.

Dual Listed-placed American sprinter Jolina (USA) (Lemon Drop Kid {USA}), owned by Allam Bloodstock, has delivered once again; after producing a Spirit Of Boom filly as her maiden foal in 2024, she was covered by G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes star Ozzmosis and has produced another filly this month.

Improvement upon the first foal

“The dam won four of eight starts, and more importantly, she is a very, very good looking mare,” said Peter O’Brien of Segenhoe Stud, where Jolina foaled down. “Bruce Slade, who manages Allam Bloodstock, purchased her for them at the Magic Millions broodmare sale in foal to Spirit Of Boom last year.”

Jolina was brought to Australia in early 2023 courtesy of Pinhook Bloodstock International, who purchased the mare for US$43,000 ($66,000) at the Keeneland November Breeding Sale.

Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds signed the docket with Allam Racing at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale, where she was offered in foal to Spirit Of Boom by Willow Park Stud, to the tune of $320,000, which appears to O’Brien to be quite the astute purchase.

“I’ve honestly only seen a handful of Spirit Of Booms and she’s (the Spirit Of Boom filly) is nearly as good as any I’ve seen by him,” O’Brien said. “She’ll be going to the Magic Millions in January and she’s a beautiful filly, but if I’m honest, I think this one is a touch better.

“I think Ozzmosis is very well priced, he was a proper racehorse, and you never know until stallions start showing through their foals, but if I have to draw a picture of a foal that I would have wanted by Ozzmosis, she is that to me.”

A Group 1-winning son of Champion Sire Zoustar, Ozzmosis stands his second season at stud for $44,000 (inc GST) at Newgate Farm.

“I think Newgate are going to have a lot of fun with this stallion,” O’Brien added. “We have another mare due to foal to him next week and I can’t wait.”

Extreme choices made for next mating

“It’s really not a stretch to say we’re blown away,” O’Brien said of the filly. “You love to see young mares produce like this. That’s two very good foals in a row.”

Judging by Jolina’s pedigree, she should be well set up to continue the trend; stakes-placed second dam Julie Mis (USA) (Miswaki {USA}) has produced two stakes winners, including stakes-producing Group 3 winner Summer Mis (USA) (Summer Squall {USA}), whose own daughters have also produced stakes performers.

“I’m delighted for the Allams, they’ve put a lot of money in and have been very well advised by Bruce. They’re going to get well paid for her first foal and particularly well for this one.”

The power of the first two foals have led to the Allams deciding they can justify one of the highest service fees in the country for Jolina this season, as O’Brien shared.

“I'll give you an example of how confident the Allams and Bruce are with her; she’s going to Extreme Choice this year,” he said. “Bruce wanted to see the second foal and she’s been better than the first. That confirmed the decision to give her a proper go and so she’s off to Extreme Choice.”

After another successful season adding to his phenomenal strike rate, Extreme Choice will stand for $330,000 (inc GST) this season.

“She’s a beautiful mare,” O’Brien added. “Very well balanced, and a beautiful mover. Speaking to (Newgate’s) Jim Carey, he described the type of American mare that suits Extreme Choice and this is her.

“Everybody knows the market over there (in the States) now and what a good racehorse is, and that’s what she was.”
