Looking Ahead - August 24

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two promising runners by Trapeze Artist and Written Tycoon are chasing success across Australia on Sunday.

Bet365 Swan Hill, Race 1, 1pm AEDT, Bet365 Position Payout Maiden Plate, $32,0000, 1600m

Fumage, 4-year-old mare (Trapeze Artist x Firemaid (USA) {Machiavellian {USA})

Swan Hill’s Sunday meeting will be the venue for Fumage (Trapeze Artist) to chase her maiden success. Her form has been a bit mixed lately, but she finds the right race to be competitive in.

The well-related filly is the sixth live-foal from the Machiavellian (USA) mare Firemaid (USA), a two-time winner on the track, and has become a very successful broodmare, leaving four individual winners.

The best of these have clearly been the classy Shamal Wind (Dubawi {Ire}), she was an eight-time winner with her best win being in the G1 Oakleigh Plate, she was also successful another three times at Listed level, and has subsequently gone on to leave five individual winners herself.

Firemaid, since producing Fumage has left a 2-year-old filly by Toronado (Ire), and a Pinatubo (Ire) yearling filly.

Moe, Race 8, 5pm AEST, Ladbrokes Same Race Multi B64 Handicap, $35,000, 1100m

Lake Forest, 4-year-old gelding (Written Tycoon x Fuhryk {Star Witness)

The well-bred Lake Forest (Written Tycoon) is set to resume at Moe on Sunday. The gelded son of Written Tycoon has always shown plenty of promise and has put together a record of two wins and a placing from only five starts.

Lake Forest is out of the Star Witness mare Fuhryk. She was a six-time winner at 1100 and 1200 metres, including the G3 Proud Miss Stakes, G3 Kevin Hayes Stakes, and the Listed Alinghi Stakes.

Other smart performers within the family are the stakes horses Fuhrnatic (Langfuhr {Can}), Tats (At Talaq {USA}), Pseudonym Miss (So Called {NZ}) and Western Outlaw (Western Symphony {USA})

Fuhryk, since producing Lake Forest, has left a 3-year-old colt named Copartner Henry (Written Tycoon), a 2-year-old colt by Russian Revolution, a yearling colt by Capitalist, and she missed to Capitalist last spring.

Lake Forest was an expensive purchase at the sales, costing Anthony Freedman Racing and Julian Blaxland Bloodstock (FBAA) $450,000 at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Longwood Thoroughbred Farm.

Looking Back

Zoufield (Zoustar) - runaway winner by three and a half lengths without much effort. One to follow.

Whispering Rogue (Pierata) - third by one and a third lengths, improved well in the home straight.

Agarwood (Wootton Bassett {GB}) - leader into the home straight before fading to sixth. Would appreciate a drier track.
