In this instalment of Stable Tours, TTR AusNZ chatted with Tom Charlton, who trains with John O'Shea, to learn about the campaigns of proven performers Linebacker and Athabascan, as well as gain insight into the stable's young stock.

Charlton updated The Thoroughbred Report on the plans for some of the stable’s established stars and gave insight into the next generation, including four lightly tried just-turned 3-year-olds that look lovely horses.

Older horses

Quietness (GB), 6-year-old mare (Bated Breath (GB) x Quiet Queen (GB) {Sulamani {Ire}})

“Nice staying mare, she ran a couple of very good seconds in Listed races during the winter. She ran out a bit in them, so we may have to do a bit of work around that, but that was a bit uncharacteristic, as she acclimatised well, and is such an honest, tough, true mare.

“She may line up in The Kingston Town first up, and if she goes well, she could be a good Metropolitan chance.”

Athabascan (Fr), 7-year-old gelding (Almanzor (Fr) x Alzubra (GB) {Dansili {GB}})

“He has been such a wonderful horse for us, a very consistent horse at the top level in staying contests. He may go for the Metropolitan third up, and hopefully on to The Melbourne Cup.”

4-year-olds

Linebacker, 4-year-old gelding (Super Seth x Garden Of Swans (GB) {Oasis Dream {GB}})

“We couldn't be happier with him, he won a trial very nicely this morning and has come back well. He is a big, strong, powerful horse who has done very well physically in his break.

“He isn't screwed down and is still quite big, so he may benefit from his first couple of runs, but he will be targeting The Epsom third up, possibly going through the Tramway and then the Bill Ritchie.”

Getafix, 4-year-old gelding (Calyx (GB) x Grisille {Helmet})

“He has been a talented horse his whole life, but has only properly shown it in more recent times. He ran very well in winter grade, but it was very good winter grade races.

“He will go to the trials in early September and will probably look to get into a Silver Eagle over 1300 metres second up. If he ran in the top three in that, he may head to the Golden Eagle, but we will see. The Golden Eagle is becoming a very good race, last year's edition was very good, and the quality is getting stronger and stronger.

Snow In May, 4-year-old mare (The Autumn Sun x See You Soon {Siyouni {Fr}})

More Territories, 4-year-old mare (Territories {Ire} x More Than Faith {More Than Ready {USA}})

“Snow in May and More Territories are both proven at stakes level, Snow In May is already a black type winner.

“Snow In May, More Territories and Countyourblessings may all run in the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong. They will all chip away at those black type races and fingers crossed, they can build on their profile.”

3-year-olds

Napoleonic, 3-year-old colt (Wootton Bassett (GB) x Jolie Brise {Fastnet Rock})

“He won his trial nicely this morning, a lovely colt by Wootton Bassett who was unlucky not to win as a 2-year-old. The aim for him will be to win a maiden this spring and make plans after then.

“He is a horse with real talent.”

Burn The Sky, 3-year-old filly (Zoustar x Combat Queen {Pierro})

“She was a debut winner, she trialled this morning but wasn't sharp. She is a big scopey kind of Zoustar, and there is plenty more to come from her. We will look to get her to black type level in the spring.”

Scoop The Pool, 3-year-old gelding (Super Seth x Rosa Vernans (Ire) {Sea The Stars {Ire}})

“We really like him, he raced well at Rosehill in Saturday grade on his debut. He is a very agile horse, good action and good talent.

“He has a strong female line, and he looks like he may stay. He could possibly run next weekend at Warwick Farm over 1400 metres, and he could become a 2000 metres in time. Once he gets there, he will tell us if he could get over even further.”

Artistic Venture, 3-year-old filly (Trapeze Artist x Secret Venture {Husson {Arg}})

“She is a nice filly, she got beat at her last start, but I don't think she will lose too many admirers. She was close to winning a couple of good races as a 2-year-old, and she will improve quickly.

“We will go the maiden path with her first, and then go from there. She will be nominated for a few options shortly.

2-year-olds

Charlton mentioned it was very early to pick out any of the stable's 2-year-olds to know where they are really at, but he had a good handful of horses that were showing signs of being forward and showing nice talent.

Concrete Storm (NZ), 2-year-old colt, Hello Youmzain (Fr) x Black Sav (NZ) {Savabeel})

Purchased by O'Shea Charlton Racing and James Bester Bloodstock for NZ$120,000 from the draft of Kilgravin Lodge at the 2025 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale.

“We have a nice I Am Invincible filly that is a half to Classique Legend, and another I Am Invincible out of Rough Ride, which is a good type of filly, that we are looking forward to.”
