Looking Ahead - September 09

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two promising horses are hitting the track at Warrnambool on Tuesday. Progeny by Foxwedge and Brave Smash (Jpn) are both chasing maiden success.

Jotopeli, 4-year-old gelding (Foxwedge x Miss Shrimpton {High Chaparral {Ire}})

Warrnambool’s meeting on Tuesday will serve as the venue for the fourth start of Jotopeli, a son of Foxwedge that is trained by Symon Wilde. He has been very consistent in his career so far running in the top four in all of his three starts, and the step up to 1700 metres looks ideal.

Jotopeli is out of Miss Shrimpton (High Chaparral {Ire}) who was a three-time winner from 1300 metres up to 1900 metres.

The family is lacking a bit of black type up close but some talented stakes winners that feature further back within the pedigree include Cheverny (Grand Lodge {USA}), Fashion News (Snippets), La Chasseuse (Lion Hunter) and Academe (Royal Academy {USA}).

Since producing Jotopeli, Miss Shrimpton has produced a 3-year-old colt by Magnus, and a 2-year-old gelding by Xtravagant (NZ).

Smashing Lad, 3-year-old colt (Brave Smash (Jpn) x Lady Enid {Drumbeats})

The Maddie Raymond and Patrick Bell-trained Smashing Lad (Brave Smash {Jpn}) will resume at Warrnambool on Tuesday.

He disappointed when running eighth on debut back in April, but after a break he seems to have returned well, winning a jump-out at Camperdown, and running second in a jump-out at Casterton.

Smashing Lad is the fifth foal out of Lady Enid (Drumbeats) who was a winner over 100 metres on the track. She is nicely related being a half sister to Pedro’s Tycoon (Just Awesome) and Man Of Oar (Oarsman) who were both stakes placed on the track, she is also a half sister to Miss Razyana (Danzero) who is the dam of Fabergino (Maschino) who was a six-time stakes winner.

Smashing Lad was purchased by Maddie Raymond Racing and Australian Bloodstock for $46,000 from the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
