Stable Tours: Sargent sets his sights on ‘The Big Dance’

In this instalment of Stable Tours, TTR AusNZ chatted with John Sargent to learn about his stable's protagonists and how he campaigns his runners, with a big emphasis on getting his older performers qualified and in 'The Big Dance.'

Sargent updated The Thoroughbred Report on plans for his stable's established stars and promising 3-year-olds. He also offered insight into the next generation, including four newly turned well-bred 2-year-olds, who could be ones to watch this season.

Older horses

Palmetto (NZ), 7-year-old gelding (Ghibellines x Carolina Island (NZ) {Darci Brahma {NZ}})

“He will go to the Cameron at Newcastle on September 19, and we will look to qualify him to get him into the Big Dance.”

Powers Of Opal (NZ), 4- year-old mare (Ocean Park (NZ) x Strada Cavallo (NZ) {Alamosa {NZ}})

“She will go to the Tibbie on September 19, the same day as the Cameron. She has had a couple of trials over short distances and is coming along nicely.”

Hooligan Tommy (NZ), 5-year-old gelding (Ocean Park (NZ) x Contrada (NZ) {O’Reilly {NZ}})

“He will go to the Tuncurry Cup next on Friday and we will look to qualify him for the Big Dance.”

Glad You Think So, 5-year-old gelding (So You Think (NZ) x Gladwell {Anabaa {USA}})

“He will go tot he Tuncurry Cup on Friday also, the aim is to qualify these horses for the Big Dance, it's a three million dollar race so we aim to get them all qualified and to be in with a chance in the big one.”

Asgarda, 6-year-old mare (The Brothers War (USA) x Misk {Husson {Arg}})

“She ran fourth in the Mona Lisa last week in her first run for me, she has come to me from the country, and the aim is to get black type, she is well up to that.

“She will go to the Tibbie for her next start on September 19.”

Claim The Crown (Ire), 7-year-old gelding (Acclamation (GB) x Crown Light (GB) {Zamindar {USA}})

“Ran a nice second at Warwick farm last week, he is going well.”

3-year-olds

Flying Orchid, 3-year-old gelding (Flying Artie x Orchid Beach {Hinchinbrook})

“He is the real thing, he runs in the Ming Dynasty this weekend against Group horses at Rosehill. Hopefully we will see what level he is at then.”

Change My Address, 3-year-old filly (Exceedance x Liberata {Sebring})

“She ran eighth in the midway on Saturday at Randwick, she will head to a weaker race next start.”

Wootton Lass, 3-year-old filly (Wootton Bassett (GB) x The Natural {Fastnet Rock})

“She disappointed in the Furious on Saturday at Randwick, she will now head for a spell as she is still a bit weak.”

Nordic Viking, 3-year-old colt (So You Think (NZ) x Nordic Charm {Charge Forward})

“He kicks off at Canterbury on Wednesday in a 3-year-old maiden, he has trialled well and if he wins that he will go against the 3-year-olds at 1400 metres and upwards.”

Autumn Blonde, 3-year-old filly (The Autumn Sun x Tall Blonde {Shalaa {Ire})

“She finally won one at Kembla Grange and that should give her a bit of confidence. She will go to the Tea Rose on the 20th and if she runs well will progress onto the Flight Stakes.

“She is by The Autumn Sun and is bred to stay, just needs to relax a bit, still a little bit keen but that will come with time.”

2-year-olds

Secrets Within, 2-year-old filly (I Am Invincible x Eloping {Choisir})

Purchased by the Laguna Partnership and John Sargent Racing for $2.3 million from the Segenhoe Stud draft at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“She has been through the stables and is a $2.3 million I Am Invincible filly, she has just came back in, she is a lovely type.”

Unnamed, 2-year-old filly (Toronado (Ire) x Zurella (NZ) {Zabeel {NZ})

“Nice Toronado out of Zurealla, who won the New Zealand Oaks for Jonathan Munz, she is a lovely type may just need a little time.”

Unnamed, 2-year-old filly (Proisir x Strada Cavallo (NZ) {Alamosa {NZ}})

Purchased by DGR Thoroughbred Services Pty Ltd for NZ$700,000 from the Curraghmore Stud draft at the 2025 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale.

“She is a lovely type, she is a Proisir half sister to Powers Of Opal, she was purchased from the New Zealand sales last year and is doing everything right.”

Purchased by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock (BAFNZ) for $250,000 from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2025 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

“She is out of a full sister to Shoals, she looks promising, she is by a new sire in Pinatubo so you never know, but I like her.”
