Saturday Preview: Waller's glamour mares go head to head again in the Turnbull

10 min read
Saturday’s racing features four Group 1 events across the country, highlighted by the G1 Turnbull Stakes with Via Sistina and Aeliana at Flemington. Meanwhile, Royal Randwick will host the Epsom Handicap, Flight Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap while the first juvenile stakes races for the season look intriguing.

Waller has a strong hand in the Turnbull

Chris Waller holds a powerful hand in Saturday’s $750,000 G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington, with five stable stars set to line up. His team is spearheaded by outstanding mares Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock) and Aeliana (Castelvecchio), who are joined by Land Legend (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}), Moira (Can) (Ghostzapper {USA}) and River Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}).

The spotlight will fall firmly on Via Sistina and Aeliana, with little separating them in their two runs this preparation. They have already traded blows: Via Sistina edged out Aeliana in the G1 Winx Stakes, before Aeliana turned the tables in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). On that occasion, both mares had to settle for minor placings behind the brilliant Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars).

Speaking in his Chris Waller Racing Weekly Preview, the trainer said he was struggling to find any negatives around his leading duo.

“They both had a gallop on Saturday morning at Flemington and both were perfect,” Waller said.

“They both had a gallop on Saturday morning at Flemington and both were perfect.” - Chris Waller

“Via Sistina is working great, forget her last start run, the sectional times suggested she couldn’t win, but (she’s) come through it very well. James (McDonald) rides and she won the race last year. I’ve got no negatives.”

“Aeliana is ready to peak, she is not fully developed yet, she is still maturing, that is the only negative I can say about her. She doesn’t know that, she has never raced any better. She is a Derby winner, so the distance is going to suit and she placed in the Rosehill Guineas. There’s no negatives, apart from she is still six months away."

"Can she beat Via when she’s like that? If she does, she has a big future ahead.”

Waller boasts an outstanding record in the Turnbull Stakes, having won six of the past 10 editions. In that time, he has trained the quinella five times, and even swept the trifecta in 2020.

Via Sistina will attempt to defend her Turnbull Stakes crown after winning last year’s edition over her stablemate, the high-class Buckaroo (GB) (Fastnet Rock). The biggest threats to Waller’s star mares may come from Antino (GB) (Redwood {GB}), who looks ready to peak, and Sir Delius (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who was impressive when defeating Buckaroo in the G1 Underwood Stakes last start.

Waterhouse-Bott team out for early juvenile black-type glory

Few stables command more respect in early 2-year-old contests than the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott partnership, and they again hold a powerful hand heading into Saturday’s juvenile stakes races at Randwick. Tulloch Lodge, which won six of the nine official trials, will saddle three colts and three fillies across the G3 Breeders’ Plate and G3 Gimcrack Stakes, while also sending Knightsbridge (Farnan) south to Flemington for the Listed Maribyrnong Plate Trial.

Of their six Randwick runners, five were trial winners: Eviction Notice (Stay Inside), Revengeance (Hellbent), I’m Ya Huckleberry (Home Affairs), Shiki (Too Darn Hot {GB}) and Home Invasion (Home Affairs). The Wildling (Wild Ruler) also shaped well when finishing third.

The stable’s record in the Breeders’ Plate is remarkable, having not only won the past two editions but also training the trifecta both times—Espionage defeating Straight Charge (Written By) and Prost in 2023, followed by King Kirk beating Tempestuous (Extreme Choice) and North England (Farnan) last year.

Bott was taken by the trial of I’m Ya Huckleberry, a son of Home Affairs.

“I think there’s a lot of depth to him, he did a great job the way he executed his trial,’’ Bott told media earlier in the week.

“He has a nice action to him, he travelled well, he was lovely and settled. He came back and quickened when needed, he was strong late so I think there was a lot to like about him.”

Eviction Notice, a son of Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside, was one of the most eye-catching trial performers, scoring by almost eight lengths.

“I thought he was one of the standouts for the day,’’ Bott said.

“He ran good time, he was visually impressive in the way he did it. He’s a fast horse with some nice substance to him, he has a good constitution as well so it was hard to miss his performance.

“He’d been showing plenty at home, maybe the margin had he lined up in another event may have been different but he didn’t surprise us in the professionalism he showed.”

Revengeance also showed ability, though Bott noted he still has learning to do.

Revengeance | Image courtesy of Georgia Young Photography

“He was still figuring it out on the day, he was challenged and really responded nicely,’’ he said.

“There was more to what we saw in his heat. When he puts it all together he’s going to be a nice horse, physically he’s a lovely strong individual.”

Among the fillies, Home Invasion impressed when scoring by nearly two lengths, while Shiki produced a sharp display.

“She went into it a bit fresh and did a few things wrong, she was in a rush to get it over and done with,’’ Bott said of Home Invasion.

Home Invasion | Image courtesy of Georgia Young Photography

“She’s shown sharp improvement off the back of the trial and is doing everything right at home.

“Shiki sat outside the lead and was impressive through the line. The Wildling led them up and was the ultimate professional, showed good speed and she stuck on well but might have bumped into a smart heat.”

In the G3 Breeders’ Plate, the Waterhouse/Bott-trained trio face stiff opposition, including Bjorn Baker’s Extreme Choice colt Paradoxium and the $1 million Stay Inside colt Incognito, prepared by Michael Freedman.

Meanwhile, the Gimcrack Stakes looks equally competitive, with Baker’s fillies Better Off Alone (Better Than Ready) and Masvingo (Zoustar) shaping as key contenders.

Autumn Glow poised to shine in the Epsom

The outstanding Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) puts her unbeaten record of six wins on the line in Saturday’s time-honoured $1.5 million G1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick.

Her flawless résumé already features two Group 2s, two Group 3s and a Listed victory, but this will be her biggest test yet. Adding to the challenge is barrier 14, the widest draw, which jockey Kerrin McEvoy will need to navigate if she is to secure that coveted Group 1 success for owners Arrowfield Pastoral Pty Ltd and Hermitage.

“It always makes it harder but she is a good horse,’’ Waller's assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said after Tuesday's barrier draw.

“She obviously is very, very short in the market and she is just going to need to be really good.

“She (Autumn Glow) obviously is very, very short in the market and she is just going to need to be really good.’’ - Charlie Duckworth

“She is terrific. She obviously had that exhibition gallop on Saturday at the races and bounced through that. She was literally just doing too well. She is bouncing out of her skin and ready to explode.

This is her crack at a Group 1 but she deserves it.’’

It won’t be easy in what looks like a highly competitive edition of the famous mile. Among the biggest dangers are the proven topweight Ceolwulf (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), Godolphin’s Pericles (Street Boss {USA}), who was sharp resuming for new trainer Bjorn Baker, and the Kiwi Pier (NZ) (Proisir), who looks to have returned in outstanding order and looms as a smoky under jockey Ethan Brown.

Apocalyptic looks for three in a row in the Flight

The Michael Freedman-trained Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) will chase a third straight win, and her first at Group 1 level, in Saturday’s Flight Stakes at Randwick. The daughter of boom sire Extreme Choice has already stamped herself as one of the season’s standout 3-year-old fillies, winning both the G2 Furious Stakes and the G2 Tea Rose Stakes under regular rider Tommy Berry.

Like many of her rivals, Apocalyptic will step up to the mile for the first time, but Freedman is confident she has the quality to handle the test.

Apocalyptic | Image courtesy of Sportpix

“She seems good, did a bit of striding work on Saturday morning and seems in good order so we are looking forward to next Saturday,” Freedman told Racenet.

“I would like to think (she will come into her own at a mile) but racing can throw up some funny scenarios sometimes.

“Whilst I really feel she is a filly that is shaping that will love the mile, you have to see them do it but she seems in great order.”

“Whilst I really feel she (Apocalyptic) is a filly that is shaping that will love the mile, you have to see them do it but she seems in great order.” - Michael Freedman

The G1 Flight Stakes shapes as a competitive affair with an even bunch of fillies. Tupakara (Trapeze Artist) is still chasing her maiden Group 1 victory after six consecutive stakes placings, Within The Law (Lucky Vega {Ire}) finally draws a good gate and looks a strong chance, while Queen Of Clubs (Maurice {Jpn}), appears to be peaking at the right time and could thrive over the mile, looming as the upset danger.

Another Step on the Way to ‘The Everest’

The G2 $1 million Premiere Stakes looms as a key lead-up to the G1 The Everest, with slot-holders Jimmysstar (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}), Briasa (Smart Missile) and Private Harry (Harry Angel {Ire}), likely having their final hit-out before the $20 million feature in two weeks’ time.

Several others are also out to press their claims for a late slot, keeping the pressure on in what is shaping as one of the most competitive editions of the Premiere in recent years.

Private Harry | Image courtesy of Georgia Young Photography

One under the spotlight is Private Harry, who disappointed in the G2 The Shorts. Trainer Nathan Doyle has turned to Tim Clark and admits improvement is needed, though he remains upbeat.

“It’s a competitive race, I suppose he needs to improve and he needs to get things right,’’ Doyle told Racenet.

“It’s a competitive race, I suppose he (Private Harry) needs to improve and he needs to get things right.’’ - Nathan Doyle

“He definitely needs to run top three to warrant pushing on to an Everest, but I feel he can do so.

“He just got it all wrong first-up. You can’t do anything wrong, you’re against the best sprinters in A grade.

“He’s a fast horse and he likes to be up on speed and when they are like that they need to get everything right out of the machines. If he gets that right I’m sure he can bounce back and be competitive.”

Nathan Doyle | Image courtesy of Sportpix

The Everest slot-holders naturally look hardest to beat, but Mazu (Maurice {Jpn}) could again give a bold sight up front, while Jedibeel (NZ) (Savabeel) looms as a potential giant-killer for trainer Brad Widdup if he brings his best.

Maribyrnong Trial Stakes background check: McEvoy team unleash talented trio

13 min read
Juvenile stakes action kicks off at Flemington on Saturday, with the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes offering a unique battle of the sexes where six colts take on six fillies for the early scamper down the straight for early black type.

Cover image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

First held in 1978, the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes has long been a testing ground for Victoria’s sharpest juveniles. It has unearthed future stallions such as Canny Lad, Danzero and Zizou, and more recent names like Unite And Conquer, Ingratiating and Bodyguard.

The race has seen its share of change over the years. At times run exclusively for colts and geldings, it was Lemongrass (Horbury {Ire}) who became the first filly to win in 1980. In 2007, the distance was extended from 900 metres to 1000 metres, with Exceedingly Good successful, one of five winners by champion sire Exceed And Excel.

Tony and Calvin McEvoy will be the busiest stable on Saturday, saddling three runners - Knurl (Brazen Beau), One Day At A Time (Bivouac) and Sabrina (Blue Point {Ire}). Tony McEvoy previously won the race with Risen From Doubt (Not A Single Doubt) in 2013.

The Hayes family also boast a strong record, with Ben Hayes - now training alongside brothers Will and JD, part of the Lindsay Park team that won consecutive editions with Madeenaty (Exceed And Excel) and Nomothaj (Snitzel). This year, the Hayes brothers will line up Eurocanto (Per Incanto {USA}) and Rich On Bubbles (Capitalist).

Mark Walker has two contenders in Harry Met Sally (Yes Yes Yes) and Flash Of Class (Capitalist), the latter carrying Te Akau Racing’s famous Tangerine colours.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, while concentrating more heavily on the Group 3 juvenile features at Randwick, will still be represented by a strong chance in Knightsbridge (Farnan), who has impressed at the Sydney trials and looks a winning hope for Champion jockey James McDonald.

On the breeding front, Capitalist - who himself began his career with victory in the G3 Breeders’ Plate - is the only sire with multiple runners, through Rich On Bubbles and Flash Of Class. Two first-season stallions are also represented for the first time, with Guest House (Home Affairs) and Given The Extreme (Extreme Warrior) making their debuts.

Trial report: Captivant and Stay Inside's first juveniles continue to impress

5 min read
A slew of new, exciting 2-year-olds hit the trials on Friday morning, including a sharp Ole Kirk colt at Warwick Farm and a speedy Stay Inside filly at Murray Bridge. In addition, Group-winning gelding Raging Force ticked over ahead of a G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes tilt.

Raging Force back on track for Coolmore

G3 San Domenico Stakes winner Raging Force (Cosmic Force) cruised home to a trial win at Warwick Farm on Friday for Peter Snowden. Seventh in his most recent start in the G2 Run To The Rose, the 3-year-old gelding made short work of his seven rivals, easing down past Penpel (Written By) to claim a three-quarter-length win.

“He had a gut-buster (in the Run To The Rose)," Snowden told Racing And Sports on Tuesday. The trainer indicated the 3-year-old was still set for the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, and would like head to the G2 Schillaci Stakes on October 11 against the older horses as his stepping stone to the target.

“He went way too hard the other day. I gave him an easy week and he is nice and bright again now. The trial is nothing more than just a jump-out and relax.”

Darby Racing paid $150,000 for Raging Force out of Mullaglass Stud’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale draft.

He is the first winner out of Listed Debutante Stakes winner Miss Loren (Stryker), who has a 2-year-old called Vantorix (Captivant), a yearling colt by Zousain, and is due to foal again to Zousain in November.

Farnan filly flies home at Warwick Farm

A juvenile daughter of Farnan, Wings Of Glory, made an impression at her first trial at Warwick Farm on Friday morning when winning her heat by a quarter of a length. Trained by Ciaron Maher, the filly travelled with the pack into the straight before striding away to take the lead in the final furlong.

Blueblood Thoroughbreds and Ciaron Maher Bloodstock went to $180,000 to secure the filly at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, where she was offered by her breeder Mullaglass Stud.

Wings Of Glory is the fourth foal from Dorotea (Lope De Vega {Ire}), a half-sister to Listed-winning Just As Sharp (Swiss Ace) whose third dam is five-time Group 1-winning mare Triscay (Marscay). Dorotea’s second foal Robrick (Invader) was runner-up in the Listed Always Welcome Stakes and the $750,000 Inglis Sprint. She has a yearling full sister to Wings Of Glory to follow, and missed to Stay Inside this season.

Green Kirk impresses for Blake Ryan

Ole Kirk colt Green Kirk put on a strong showing for his debut trial at Warwick Farm on Friday, where the Blake Ryan trainee led the pack from the jump and worked home well in the home straight for a two-length win.

Video: Watch replay of Green Kirk, video courtesy of Racing NSW

Magus Equine Limited paid $320,000 for the son of Champion First Season Sire Ole Kirk at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Tyreel Stud on behalf of breeder Wallings Bloodstock.

Green Kirk is the second foal from Snit Ball (Snitzel), a full sister to G1 Diamond Stakes winner Summer Passage. Snit Ball delivered a filly by All Too Hard in mid-September.

Captivant colt a winner at second trial

Courthezon (Captivant) flew the flag for his first season sire at Warwick Farm’s trial morning on Friday, coming away with a comfortable win at his second public hit-out. The Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained colt had to work wide from a mid-pack position when flying home, winning the 815-metre heat by a length and three quarters.

Kia Ora Stud, who stand Captivant, purchased the colt for $150,000 from Bhima Stud, who offered him on behalf of breeder Mr D Monnery at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Courthezon is the third foal from Group 3-performed winner Rayas (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), a full sister to G2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders winner Lasarla (NZ) and a half-sister to 10-time winner Changing Eyes (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe {USA}). Rayas has a full brother to Courthezon bound for the sales ring in 2026, and is due in early October to Exceedance.

Stay Inside filly blitzes field at Murray Bridge

Juvenile filly Inhabit (Stay Inside) left her rivals in the dust in a 800-metre heat at Murray Bridge on Friday. The Michael Hickmott trainee put a tick over six lengths on second place and posted a slick 48.87s, almost two seconds faster than the other trial of the morning.

Inhabit was a $200,000 purchase for her trainer from Segenhoe Stud’s draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Bred by Chris Barham and Binalong Bloodstock, Inhabit is the second foal from Jenga (All Too Hard), making her a half-sister to stakes-performed Kujenga (King’s Legacy), who resumed this preparation with a fourth in the G2 Furious Stakes. Jenga, a half-sister to dual Listed winner Granny Red Shoes (Not A Single Doubt), was covered by Capitalist in 2024, and will be due to foal down in mid October.

Rebel Tuesday debuts a winner

Phillip Stokes-trained Rebel Tuesday (Rebel Dane) came home the winner in the second juvenile heat at Murray Bridge on Friday. The filly made short work of the field to win by three quarters of a length over Vandaross (Anders), with Kejayaan (Tiger Of Malay) in third.

Video: Watch replay of Rebel Tuesday, video courtesy of Racing SA

JP Bloodstock paid $30,000 for Rebel Tuesday in an Inglis Digital sale last November, where she was offered by her breeder Jen Campin Bloodstock. She is a half-sister to Listed Dulcify Handicap winner Ganbare (Maurice {Jpn}) out of city-winning Redoute’s Choice mare Mardi. Her dam has a Hitotsu yearling colt to follow and missed this season to Lauda Sion (Jpn).

Private Harry seeking redemption in Premiere

Trainer Nathan Doyle isn’t shirking away from Private Harry (Harry Angel {Ire})’s task in Saturday’s G2 Premiere Stakes. “It’s a competitive race, I suppose he needs to improve and he needs to get things right,” Doyle told racingnsw.com.au.

“He definitely needs to run top three to warrant pushing on to an Everest but I feel he can do so. He just got it all wrong first-up. You can’t do anything wrong, you’re against the best sprinters in A grade. He’s a fast horse and he likes to be up on speed and when they are like that they need to get everything right out of the machines. If he gets that right I’m sure he can bounce back and be competitive.

“If he didn’t have an unbeaten record going into that race there wouldn’t be the same scrutiny. It’s hard to maintain an unbeaten record, it was only his sixth race start and we’ve got to take that into account.”

Bigger targets for Spicy Lu

Trainer Nick Olive is keen to send 3-year-old filly Spicy Lu (Tagaloa) to bigger targets after Saturday’s G2 Edward Manifold Stakes. A Listed winner at two, she ran fourth in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes last start. “Where she is at home, she's in a nice, big yard outside and she loves it, so we took her home (after the Caulfield race) and we're taking her back down now,” Olive told racing.com.

“I feel she's thrived since that second-up run and she's in really good order. Her work on Tuesday morning was super. I think Saturday will tell us a lot. If she goes really well she could go to the Thousand Guineas. If we don't think she's quite up to that there's a race at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day (G2 Fillies Classic) that she could target.

“The Oaks is in the back of our minds, for sure, but she needs to make all the right steps leading into that. Saturday will tell us where we go next and that determines our program from there.”

Pericles on the up for G1 Epsom

Trainer Bjorn Baker thinks barrier five gives the improving Pericles (Street Boss {USA}) a strong chance in the G1 Epsom against unbeaten Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun). “We can only worry about our own horse,” Baker told racingnsw.com.au.

“He’s had a lot of experience at the mile at Randwick, he’s run well in two Doncasters, he’s had a faultless preparation and we couldn’t be happier. He’s a very good horse in his own right so I think he is a great chance. He’s got a perfect gate, will be able to put himself there without doing any work and I’m confident he can run a big race.”

Ka Ying Rising to trial on Tuesday

The Australian Turf Club issued a press release on Friday with regards to the upcoming trial by Ka Ying Rising (NZ) (Shamexpress {NZ}) on Tuesday at Randwick. “Ka Ying Rising will parade in the Theatre of The Horse around 8.45am before heading to the course proper for the barrier trial, scheduled to jump at 9am,” said the press release.

“Zac Purton and David Hayes will hold a media conference in the Theatre Of The Horse later in the morning once Ka Ying Rising has returned to the day stalls.” The ATC and Racing NSW will host breakfast.

Not the grand final for Jimmysstar

The Ciaron Maher stable have their eyes on The Everest prize for Jimmysstar (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) who runs in Saturday’s G2 Premiere Stakes. “For some of them it’s almost the grand final but for us it’s two weeks away,” assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord told racingnsw.com.au.

Jimmysstar (NZ) | Image courtesy of Sportpix

“It’s not too dissimilar to last year with Bella (Nipotina). He’s there to run well, he will run well, and if he wins on Saturday we’ll have an exciting couple of weeks ahead because there’s still more to come.”

McEvoy can’t split juveniles

Co-trainer Calvin McEvoy can’t split the two juveniles they have running in Saturday’s Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes, being filly One Day At A Time (Bivouac) and colt Knurl (Brazen Beau). “It was never the plan, we were never going to accept with three,” McEvoy told racenet.com.au. Originally they also had filly Sabrina (Blue Point {Ire}) but she is scratched.

“These three have taken us there … fit and well, we haven't had to push or chase, it hasn't be a rush. We thought do we wait, try and run one or two and wait, but you shoot yourself in the foot. The three of them are fit and ready to go and it'd be nice to get some money in the bank, two of them are Magic Millions, we could keep that door open.”

Three jockeys charged over cocaine video

Three Queensland jockeys, Amy Graham, Casey Waddell, and Sophie Wilcock, have been charged over a video that shows Graham inhaling a white substance. “It seems I was ingesting some sort of white powder, I believe it was cocaine,” Graham said in the hearing.

Graham was charged under AR 228(a) (conduct prejudicial to the image, interests, integrity or welfare of racing) and AR 232(i) (giving false or misleading evidence). Waddell who is alleged to have filmed the video was charged under AR 228(a) (conduct prejudicial to the image, interests, integrity or welfare of racing).

Wilcock has been charged under AR 232(i) (giving false or misleading evidence) in relation to the video that was the subject of the stewards' inquiry. All three have been given time to respond to the Racing Queensland stewards.

Double for D’Argento at Moruya

D’Argento sired a double on Friday at Moruya with Barbara Joseph, Paul and Matt Jones-trained 3-year-old filly Cando Attitude winning on debut. She was purchased by her trainers for $55,000 from Bowness Stud’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft. Cando Attitude is the third winner for Because We All Can (Hussonet {USA}). Her older half-brother Louie’s Legacy (The Factor {USA}), winner of seven races, ran at the same meeting finishing sixth.

D'Argento’s other winner was 4-year-old mare Ziggy Rose who broke her maiden at start number seven.

Million-dollar bonus pool for The Kiwi

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) confirmed the final list of 10 New Zealand stakes races featuring part of the NZ$1 million Bonus Eligible Race Pool attached to The NZB Kiwi. “These 10 races are some of the biggest milestones on the road to The NZB Kiwi. The Bonus Pool adds an extra layer of excitement and gives our Slot Holders, Trainers, Owners and fans even more reason to chase the Southern Hemisphere’s richest 3-year-old race,” said NZTR Chief Executive Officer Matt Ballesty in a press release.

“We’ll also continue to ensure this highly publicised event is promoted strongly both here in New Zealand and internationally, and we’re looking forward to delivering a standout race on Champions Day in partnership with our Premier Sponsor New Zealand Bloodstock, the team at Auckland Thoroughbred Racing, and Entain Australia and New Zealand.”

Quartet for Dennis

Local trainer Robert Dennis won four of the eight race card at Ascot Park on Friday in New Zealand on Friday. It’s been a terrific day – it’s always great to train any winner, so to get four is hugely rewarding,” Robert Dennis said.

“Winning the race named for Dad was a nice cherry on top.” Sir Sterling (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) won the Vale Tony Dennis Handicap.

Beeby thrilled with Goffs Orby results

Classic winners Jim Bolger and Joe Joyce shared the spoils for top lot status on the final day of a red-hot Book 2 session of the Goffs Orby Sale on Thursday when their respective fillies by Teofilo and Mehmas sold for €135,000 (AU$239,000) apiece.

The Book 2 session of the Orby followed a familiar script to Book 1 with sharp rises across the board. Of the 394 horses offered, 338 were sold at a clearance rate of 86% [up by 14% on last year]. The €8,550,000 (AU$15.2 million) turnover climbed 28%, the average was up by 25% to €25,296 (AU$44,900) while the median rose by 33% to €20,000 (AU$35,500).

Henry Beeby commented, “Book 2 of the Irish National Yearling Sale always has a hard act to follow after two days of the best in Orby Book 1, and this year upped the ante as Monday and Tuesday returned record breaking results with new highs for average at €136,256 and the €98,000 median headed by a trio of millionaire lots.

“That Orby 1 is a world class yearling sale that is the measure of any on the planet when we have the horses is proven time and again and so it was the case this week as we enjoyed a trade of sustained demand as demonstrated by the 89% clearance rate.”

He added, “Orby 2 operates at a different level but the unceasing hunger for horses over the last two days has continued the trends set since August as we have seen mighty trade at Saratoga, Deauville, Doncaster, Keeneland and Fairyhouse, all at their own levels. In fact, the Orby 2 average is a record as well, and the median came within a bid of the high of 2022, whilst we have sold more six figure lots and the number making €50,000 or over has also risen dramatically, and all from a strong clearance rate of 86%. Another notable statistic is that the last 10 lots averaged well above the sale average so dispelling any suggestion of the sale tailing off in any way.

“Buyer diversification is also noteworthy and the combined efforts of the Goffs Purchaser Attraction Team and our friends at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing has led to a huge number of buyers from all over the world with new faces coming specifically for Orby 2 and 35 different entities signing for lots making €50,000 and above – that's some spread.

“There is no doubt that the unique Goffs Two Million Series has a positive impact on Orby 2 as well as its predecessor and the five Book 2 graduates who took home a €50,000 Goffs Bonus have acted as inspiration for buyers over the last two days much the same as those buying earlier in the week.”

Estrange to miss the Arc

A late setback has scuppered the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe chances of Estrange (Night Of Thunder), who will now miss the race, leaving a field of 17. Due to start widest of all in gate 18, she delivered a dirty scope in the lead up to the race.

Trainer David O'Meara told the PA news agency, “We're all devastated. She worked earlier in the week and worked great and it looked like the rain was coming for her which was ideal. This morning she was coughing after exercise and I scoped her and she was dirty – we don't have enough time to get her cleaned up.”

Elite Status to Whitsbury Manor

Elite Status, a Group-winning sprinter at two and three, has been retired from racing and will stand alongside his sire, Havana Grey, at Whitsbury Manor Stud next year. A stud fee will be announced at a later date.

Trained by Karl Burke for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Elite Status arrived at Royal Ascot unbeaten as a 2-year-old following impressive victories in a maiden at Doncaster and the Listed National Stakes at Sandown. Though meeting with defeat when attempting to extend his winning sequence in the G2 Norfolk Stakes, ultimately finishing third behind Valiant Force, he soon opened his account in Group company with a dominant triumph in the G3 Prix de Cabourg at Deauville.

As a 3-year-old Elite Status again kicked off his campaign in the best possible fashion, registering back-to-back wins at Newbury in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes and G3 Hackwood Stakes. On the last occasion he lowered the six-furlong course record at the Berkshire venue, winning by half a length from a trio of top-level performers in Lake Forest, Kind Of Blue and Regional.

Ed Harper, director of Whitsbury Manor Stud, said, “We have loved everything about Elite Status since the day he was born. He knocked our eyes out as a foal at home and it's fantastic we now get to support him with our mares that have already bred top runners by Havana Grey. He's not only a stunning-looking horse, but he was rated 4lbs higher than his sire and 6lbs higher than his grandsire [on Racing Post ratings], so he's the full package.”

Agenda released for Global Symposium

The agenda has been released for the 51st Annual Global Symposium on Racing, which will be held Dec. 8-10 at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort in Tucson, Arizona. According to a release from the Race Track Industry Program, “This year's program will spotlight the forces reshaping the industry and the solutions needed to prosper in a rapidly evolving landscape. Topics include examining the racing business model, the rise of prediction markets, Thoroughbred breeding trends, and supporting mental wellness.”

In addition, entrepreneur and owner Mike Repole will share his insights in a presentation named “Straight From Repole: An Unfiltered Look at Racing's Future.”

“The Symposium has always been where racing's most important conversations happen,” said Robert Hartman, Chair of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program. “This year, we're proud to continue that tradition with sessions designed to inform, challenge, and inspire.”

Looking Ahead - October 04

4 min read

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three well-bred runners are taking their place across Australia on Saturday, runners by Farnan, Hello Youmzain (Fr) and Savabeel are all chasing success.

Flemington, Race 2, 12.55pm AEDT, Listed Darley Maribyrnong Plate, $175,000, 1000m

Knightsbridge, 2-year-old colt (Farnan x Festivity {Nicconi})

The exciting Knightsbridge (Farnan) makes his debut at Listed level at Flemington on Saturday, and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained youngster looks hard to beat on the back of a promising trial victory on the Kensington back on September 22 over 850 metres.

The son of Farnan is the fifth foal of Festivity (Nicconi), who was a three-time winner on the track, who has since thrived as a broodmare. She has left three winners, including Semana (Winning Rupert), who has won at Group 3 and R. Listed level, and placed at Group 1 level three times, and Gala Queen (Deep Field), who has been a Listed winner in South Australia.

Festivity is also a half sister to Merriest (Denman), who was a five-time winner, including at Listed level in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Since producing Knightsbridge, Festivity has produced a Farnan yearling colt, and is due to foal to I Am Invincible later this spring.

Knightsbridge was purchased for $750,000 by James Harron Bloodstock and Tony Fung Colts from the Lime Country draft at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Murtoa, Race 1, 1.11pm AEDT, Samios Plumbing Supplies Maiden Plate, $32,000, 1100m

Signoretti (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Hello Youmzain (Fr) x I Am Grande {I Am Invincible})

Signoretti (NZ), a son of Cambridge Stud’s exciting stallion Hello Youmzain (Fr), will be making his fourth start at Murtoa for Cranbourne trainer Mark Walker.

He ran a solid race for fifth on debut at Ballarat back in March 7, where he attacked the line well from way back in the field, and then backed that up with two good seconds at Cranbourne and Geelong.

He has since had a break and three jump-outs to prepare himself for his resuming 3-year-old run, where he looks hard to beat.

Signoretti is the second foal from the I Am Invincible mare I Am Grande, who was a two-time winner and placed at metropolitan level in Sydney.

The family is a bit quiet in black type close-up, but there are some classy gallopers that feature further back. His third dam is the outstanding Bollinger (Dehere {USA}), who won the G1 Coolmore Classic and her Group-winning stallion sons Villermont and Fresian Fire (USA) (A.P. Indy {USA}).

I Am Grande since producing Signoretti, has left a yearling colt by Tarzino (NZ) and is due to foal to the same stallion this spring.

Signoretti was a $100,000 purchase by Cambridge Stud from the draft of Westbury Stud at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Doomben, Race 5, 2.33pm AEDT, Senq QTIS 3YO Handicap, $85,000, 1600m

Contingency (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Savabeel x Bingo (NZ) {O’Reilly {NZ}})

Contingency (NZ), a son of Savabeel, will be making his second start at Doomben on Saturday, and he will be looking to remain unbeaten after scoring impressively on debut at the Sunshine Coast over the same distance for trainer Paul Shailer.

The well-bred gelding is the fifth and last foal from the two-time winner Bingo (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}}). She is a well-related type, being a three-quarter-sister to Symphonic (NZ), a Group-placed daughter of O’Reilly (NZ) that is the dam of the dual Group 1 winner Orchestral (NZ) (Savabeel).

Bingo is also a half sister to the dams of Savaglee (NZ) (Savabeel), Aegeon (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}) and Daffodil (NZ) (No Excuse Needed {GB}), who are also all Group 1 winners.

Contingency was originally purchased by Flag Bloodstock for NZ$340,000 from the Waikato Stud draft at the 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale. He was then purchased via Inglis Digital for $70,000 by K Lack in June this year.

Looking Back

Cabriole (Lonhro) - Ran a solid third at Moonee Valley,he should improve off that effort and may appreciate a bigger track.

Miss Deceiver (Tassort) - Ran a solid fourth at Moonee Valley.
