Foal Focus: 'The mare has been terrific to us, and she has left a pearler'

In today's Foal Focus, Emma Todd, Bloodstock Manager of Burnewang North, is impressed with the Toronado filly produced this spring by the farm's star mare More Bubbles.

The dam of this impressive Toronado (Ire) filly is More Bubbles, a daughter of Sebring. While she was only placed during her racing career, she has made a remarkable start to life as a broodmare - producing On The Bubbles (by Brazen Beau), the New Zealand Group 1-winning 2-year-old, who went on to win seven races in his career.

A mare that started with a bang

More Bubbles (Sebring) has proven herself a top-class broodmare right from the outset. Her first foal, On The Bubbles (Brazen Beau), was a seven-time winner - including four juvenile victories, as he claimed success in both the R. Listed Karaka 2YO Classic and the G1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

She has also produced the winner Cheerful Cat (Impending), who scored over 1500 metres.

More Bubbles boasts the pedigree to back up her success. She is a Sebring half-sister to Politeness (Street Sense {USA}), who won eight races including the G1 Myer Classic, and Green Aeon (Snitzel), winner of the G3 Concorde Handicap in New Zealand.

“The mare has been terrific to us, and she has left a pearler.” Todd said,

“She has been a little tricky to mate but she is worth the effort,”

“To produce a Group 1 winner for us with On The Bubbles first up was incredible. We actually have her 3-year-old filly by Written Tycoon, which is named Champagne Anyone. We bought her back and she is with Graeme Begg.

“She is a lovely filly and we are being very patient with her. We really like her.”

When asked how the Burnewang North team came to purchase More Bubbles, Todd explained:

“Our dear late friend Steve Brem found her for us and we bought her together at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling and Bloodstock Sale for $100,000.

“She was a beauty on type, we loved Sebring, we loved her page, and she has been great to us.

“She is a great type and very easy to mate, as she is very consistent in leaving great types.”

Her Toronado filly is a ripper

When asked to describe the Toronado (Ire) filly born earlier this spring, Todd had high praise and clear admiration for the young horse.

“She is a lovely athletic type of filly that has great leg, an intelligent head, plenty of quality, and is very active and playful - so she keeps us on our toes.

“She is very similar to the mare, has great balance and strength, and is an all-round great type.

“We love Toronado as a stallion. He’s obviously had a setback this season, so we hope he recovers well. He really is a great stallion.”

When asked about plans for the filly, Todd confirmed that she will follow the weanling sales path, in line with Burnewang North’s breeding model.

“She will target a weanling sale as per our general business model. She is a nice, correct type so she should have no issues. We just have to hope it continues on and she progresses - the sales are still a fair while away, but she should have no problem.”

The next mating for More Bubbles

More Bubbles is currently under service to Henry Longfellow (Ire), Rosemont Stud’s exciting new shuttle stallion. The Dubawi (Ire) colt was a Group 1 winner as a juvenile in Ireland and ran third at Royal Ascot in the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes as a 3-year-old.

“She went to visit Henry Longfellow at Rosemont Stud. We really liked that mating, so fingers crossed she is in foal.

“The mare leaves consistent types to all sorts of stallions, so hopefully she is in foal and she can continue producing lovely foals.”
