Looking Ahead - December 23

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are exceptionally well-bred or a high-priced runner early in their career and chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two promising runners by Alabama Express and Anders chase maiden success at Mornington on Tuesday.

Mornington, Race 1, 1.30pm AEDT, Barmah Park Restuarant and Cellar Door 2YO Maiden Plate, $32,000, 1200m

Foxy Vixen, 2-year-old filly (Alabama Express x Saluting To Win {Medaglia D’Oro {USA}})

Ben, Will and JD Hayes are very well known for their ability to train 2-year-olds, and the next one to hit the track on Tuesday at Mornington is the promising Alabama Express filly Foxy Vixen.

She has looked sharp at the Flemington jump-outs running fourth and second in the last month or so, and she looks a good chance with only 53kg after the in-form apprentice Jackson Radley’s claim.

Foxy Vixen is out of the Medaglia D’Oro (USA) mare Saluting To Win, who only raced three times. She is a half sister to the G2 Schillachi Stakes and Listed Ortensia Stakes winner, and young Widden Stud Victoria sire Dirty Work.

Saluting To Win has since produced a Panthalassa (Jpn) filly in August earlier this year.

Foxy Vixen was purchased from the Yulong draft for $140,000 by Lindsay Park Racing and Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock (BAFNZ) at the 2025 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Mornington, Race 4, 3pm AEDT, LouvreTec Melbourne Maiden Plate, $32,000, 1000m

Lapland, 3-year-old gelding (Anders x Hinchin Time {Hinchinbrook})

The John McArdle-trained Lapland (Anders) looks to chase maiden success resuming on his home track at Mornington on Tuesday. The Anders gelding ran three placings in his first preparation, and after a couple of jump-outs at Mornington and Balnarring, he should be a good chance in the hands of Brad Rawiller.

Lapland is out of the two-time winner Hinchin Time (Hinchinbrook), and while the pedigree lacks some black-type up close, some classy Group winners such as Bases Loaded (Deep Field), Caste (Sir Prancealot {Ire}), Sweet And Speedy (Street Cry {Ire}) and Speedy Natalie (Al Maher) feature.

Hinchin Time, in recent times has left a 2-year-old colt by Doubtland, while she unfortunately had a Tagaloa filly in 2024 that died shortly after birth.

Lapland was offered at the 2024 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, but he failed to reach his $50,000 reserve.
