Looking Ahead - December 24

Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two runners by Spirit Of Boom and Zoustar chase maiden success across Australia on Wednesday.

Boom Break, 4-year-old gelding (Spirit Of Boom x Super Swell {Danbird})

The consistent Tony Gollan-trained Boom Break (Spirit Of Boom) chases maiden success resuming as a 4-year-old at Ipswich on Wednesday, after running well last preparation without quite breaking through for maiden victory.

The Spirit Of Boom gelding trialled at Deagon late last month to prepare himself for his first-up assignment over 1100 metres, where he will be ridden by Emily Lang.

Boom Break is out of the three-time winner Super Swell (Danbird), who has left five winners, but importantly is a half-sister to the very talented Bel Mer (Bel Esprit), who was a Group 1 winner and has gone on to leave 10 individual winners, including two at stakes level.

In recent years, Super Swell has left a 3-year-old filly who has been a winner at Townsville named Spirit Of Bluey (Spirit Of Boom), and a colt foal by Extreme Warrior in September this spring.

Gollan Racing and John Foote Bloodstock purchased Boom Break for $250,000 from the Bell River Thoroughbreds draft at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Wagga, Race 7, 4.30pm AEDT, Inglis Xtra Bonus Series Super Maiden Handicap, $50,000, 1000m

Pyrolysis, 3-year-old filly (Zoustar x Princess Wildfire {Sepoy})

Pyrolysis (Zoustar) attempts to break her maiden at her fifth start at Wagga on Wednesday for trainer Bjorn Baker. She showed promise as a juvenile with two strong placings at Gosford and Warwick Farm - the latter behind the talented Tomato Toastie (Too Darn Hot {GB}).

She has also ran another two strong placings as a 3-year-old at Canterbury and Gosford, and she looks ready to win in this maiden event.

Pyrolysis boasts a deep pedigree. She is the fourth foal out of Princess Wildfire (Sepoy), who was placed on the track but is a half-sister to Group 1 winning stallion Star Witness, three-time Group 3 winner and sire Nostradamus, and the Listed winner Embracer (Sebring). She is also a three-quarter-sister to Elusive Leone (Elusive Quality {USA}), dam of three-time stakes winner Vulpine (Snitzel).

Since producing Pyrolysis, Princess Wildfire has foaled a 2-year-old colt named Basston (Wootton Bassett {GB}), a yearling filly by Justify (USA), and produced a Shinzo colt in August.

Pyrolysis was initially purchased by Alter Bridge Equine for $210,000 from the Widden Stud draft at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale, before being passed in short of her $200,000 reserve at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
