Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two 3-year-old runners by Maurice (Jpn) and Savabeel are chasing maiden success across Australia on Tuesday.

Yukaina, 3-year-old gelding (Maurice (Jpn) x Joliette (NZ) {Charm Spirit {Ire}})

The Mitchell Freedman-trained Yukaina (Maurice {Jpn}) makes his debut at Colac on Tuesday over 1210 metres. He has had plenty of jump-out experience and won his last one nicely at Horsham late last month.

Yukaina is the first foal out of Joliette (NZ) (Charm Spirit {Ire}), a four-time winner up to 1700 metres. Joliette is a half-sister to the classy Group 3-winning sprinter Soubrettes (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) who also placed in the G1 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes.

This is the extended family of the Group winners Serious Satire (More Than Ready {USA}), Zarzuela (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), and the Group 1 winner Star Satire (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}).

Joliette, since producing Yukaina, has left a 2-year-old colt by Saxon Warrior (Jpn), a colt foal by Acrobat, and was served last spring by Mo'Unga (NZ).

Yukaina was purchased by Pacific Bloodstock and Mitch Freedman Racing for $30,000 from the Glenn Lee Thoroughbreds draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

Sinister (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Savabeel x Shez Sinsational (NZ) {Ekraar {USA}})

The very well-bred Sinister (NZ) (Savabeel) makes his debut at Orange on Tuesday over 1400 metres for trainer Bjorn Baker. He has shown glimpses of talent at the trials, including a tidy second at Rosehill over 1030 metres last month.

The son of Savabeel is out of the four-time Group 1 winner Shez Sinsational (NZ) (Ekraar {USA}), who has also excelled as a broodmare leaving the Group winners House Of Cartier (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}) and Sinarahma (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}), and the Group 2-placed Manifique (NZ) (Savabeel).

Another classy performer within the family is the G3 Trentham Stakes and Listed Marton Cup winner Our Hail Mary (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}).

In recent years, Shez Sinsational has left a yearling colt by Proisir, and she was due to foal to Chaldean (GB) last spring.

Sinister was purchased by Bjorn Baker and Clarke Bloodstock (FBAA) for NZ$200,000 from the Rich Hill Stud draft at the 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale.
