Opportunity knocks for buyers in consolidated Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale catalogue

5 min read

Magic Millions has unveiled the catalogue for the 2026 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, which will take place this year on March 19 and 20 at the Morphettville complex. A compact 412-strong catalogue awaits buyers in South Australia a fortnight following the Magic Millions SA Raceday on March 7.

While the 2025 sale suffered slightly from the low to middle market depression felt across all sales, the 2026 catalogue has shrunk by approximately 40 horses from recent editions and the positive results of a smaller catalogue at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last week should hearten both buyers and vendors alike.

Table: Key metrics from the last six years of the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale

Last year, the competition was strong for a daughter of Zoustar out of Beauty Betty (NZ) (Swiss Ace), who was purchased for $350,000 by Blueblood Thoroughbreds and Ciaron Maher Racing from the draft of Baramul Stud. Baramul, who return in 2026 with 35 yearlings, also sold the top lot in 2024; a $400,000 I Am Invincible filly now named Invincible Lover, she was purchased by Kennewell Racing, Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA), and Ridgeport Holdings, and recently debuted for a strong second placing.

The theme for the 2026 South Australian sale is ‘Opportunity Knocks’, and Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch was keen to highlight the success of recent graduates of the sale, both across Australia and internationally.

“The Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale is so highly regarded by all industry players,” he said. “From our vendors to our buyers - whether trainers, owners, or traders - it’s the sale that keeps producing.

“The reigning European Champion Sprinter Asfoora could have been yours in Adelaide for $30,000. The $12.8 million earner Private Eye was a $62,500 buy, while crack Hong Kong star Galaxy Patch, a $50,000 buy, has already earned HK$34.8 million (A$6.65 million).”

Other recent stars to come out of the sale include multiple stakes winner In Flight (Flying Artie), Listed Wagga Cup winner Flying Bandit (Trapeze Artist), and Swiss Exile (Pariah), Group 2-winning juvenile and earner of over $660,000.

“Last year’s graduates are already up and running, and include unbeaten stakes winner Eternal Warrior,” Bowditch said.

Aside from Listed Merson Cooper Stakes winner Eternal Warrior (Extreme Warrior), last year’s Adelaide sale has also already produced metropolitan winner Zouwin (Zousain), and Group 2-placed Vahvay (Tagaloa).

Amongst the current batch of 3-year-old graduates are 53 individual winners, led by G3 David Coles AM Stakes victress Steel Trap (King’s Legacy), last start $250,000 Sunlight Consolation winner Miss Freelove (Tassort), and stakes-placed juvenile Strideaway (Alabama Express).

Bowditch also highlighted how the two-day sale still offered the same variety of sires as some of the country’s larger sales, with 107 stallions represented in the catalogue, including 15 first season sires. Diatonic (Jpn), who finished the Gold Coast sale in second spot amongst first season sires by sale price average, has four entrants engaged in the catalogue, as does In The Congo, who sold for up to $625,000 on the Gold Coast last week.

The catalogue also features first yearlings from G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Daumier, 18 yearlings by Best Of Bordeaux, the highest rated 2-year-old colt of his crop, and a number of offspring of dual Group 1 winner Jacquinot, whose yearlings sold for up to $425,000 on the Gold Coast.

“The sires represented present prospective buyers with so many opportunities, from the established stars to an exciting group of first seasoners,” Bowditch said. The southern sale also boasts three lots by last season’s Champion Sire Zoustar and a colt by Champion Sire Written Tycoon, amongst a range of proven sires.

As with other sales, all lots will be eligible for the Magic Millions race series which distributes over $20 million in prizemoney and bonuses throughout the racing season, including allotting $202,250 to the Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic and $122,250 to the Magic Millions SA 3 & 4YO Classic on Magic Millions SA Raceday at Murray Bridge.

Last year’s 2YO Classic was won by Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk), whose upwards trajectory in the spring is a testament to the types of horses to come through the Magic Millions race series.

“Last year the Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic saw Ole Dancer win on debut for the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman stable,” Bowditch said. “The untapped filly returned in the spring to score a brilliant win in the G1 Thousand Guineas. All eyes will be on Murray Bridge again in February to see what the race will unveil in 2026.”

This year the meeting takes place on Saturday, March 7, at Murray Bridge, followed by the Adelaide Cup Raceday at Morphettville on Monday, March 9. Inspections for the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale will commence on Monday, March 16, with the sale kicking off on Thursday at 10am.

“We know how much our vendors and buyers love getting to Adelaide,” Bowditch noted. “From Morphettville to nearby Glenelg, and with world class food and award winning wines, South Australia has so much to offer.”

The print catalogues for the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale and the Magic Millions March Yearling Sale have been rolled into one and will be available to be ordered as one volume. The Adelaide catalogue can be viewed separately online.
