Everyone has an opinion at a yearling sale.
Some trust the pedigree page. Some trust the eye. Some look for value, others for upside. There are those who back proven systems and those convinced they’ve found something the market has missed.
What’s far less common is having those opinions recorded… and left alone.
For the 2026 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, The Thoroughbred Report is opening the Magic Millions Yearling Vault.
Participants are invited to nominate five yearlings from the sale. Any five. There are no restrictions around price, pedigree, sex, or whether the horse was purchased or passed in.
Once submitted, those selections are locked.
The Vault will remain sealed until 2028, when the results will be published based on racetrack performance: prizemoney, stakes results and return on investment. We’ll update it again in 2029 as well.
Why the Vault exists
Yearling sales promotions have their own language of conviction…
“Belter.”
“Running type.”
“Precocious sort.”
“Slipper winner.”
Every sale produces certainty - often loudly expressed, usually over a rail, a coffee, a beer (or seven) - and very little of it is ever revisited once the horses leave the complex.
The Vault exists to fix that.
It takes those confident calls, freezes them in time, and removes the luxury of revision. No reframing a miss as bad luck, timing, budget or placement. No retrofitting success with a theory that only appeared once the horse started winning.
What happens next is out of everyone’s hands. (Well, except the trainer.)
The Vault is also an open invitation to challenge your mates. Have a quiet side bet, or a very public one. See whose eye holds up when there’s nowhere to hide.
Who can take part
The Vault is open to anyone prepared to back their judgement: owners, breeders, trainers, bloodstock agents, pinhookers, punters, analysts and first-timers with a strong view are all invited - judgement required, certainty optional.
Some horses will run early. Others will take time. Some will never reach the track. That reality is part of the yearling market and part of why selection is difficult.
In an industry where confidence is often loud and memory is short, the Vault is designed to be neither.
