Trelawney Stud – A Century at Karaka

As the NZB National Yearling Sale celebrates its 100th anniversary, Trelawney Stud is proud to mark the occasion as New Zealand’s longest-operating stud farm and one of the sale’s longest-standing supporters.

Trelawney has been offering yearlings through the Karaka National Yearling Sale since the mid-1930s, and to recognise this milestone, the farm will dedicate its entire 2026 Karaka draft to the 100th anniversary sale. That long involvement continues to be backed by results, with Trelawney the leading vendor in New Zealand last year by average across all NZ sales.

The farm’s history is built on success at the highest level. Trelawney-bred horses have produced seven Melbourne Cup winners over the history of the farm, two Cox Plate winners, and under the Taylor family’s watch, more than 35 individual Group One winners out of 68 Group One races — a record that reflects years of experience, quality stock, and a clear focus on producing top-class racehorses.

While proud of what has gone before, Trelawney remains focused on what lies ahead. The current Karaka draft represents the next group of young horses to come through the program — raised on the farm and prepared with the same approach that has served Trelawney for nearly a century.

“The two horses that Brent and Cherry love the most are, Lot 94 (Proisir x Ruqqaya {NZ}), a brown colt, and Lot 203 (Russian Revolution x Two Illicit {NZ}), a chestnut filly.

“But the market will determine their value,” said the Taylors.
