Looking Ahead highlights runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are an exceptionally well-bred or high-priced runner early in their career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse that has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Two runners by Champion stallions Snitzel and Written Tycoon chase maiden success at Wyong on Sunday.
Wyong, Race 3, 2.15pm, AEDT, In Loving Memory of Barbara Runciman F&M Maiden Plate, $42,000, 1200m
Mediterra, 3-year-old filly (Snitzel x Traceablity {Charge Forward})
The well-bred Snitzel filly Mediterra is set to make chase maiden success for her trainer Ciaron Maher at Wyong on Sunday. The well-bred filly has failed to flatter in most of her previous raceday performances, but her last run for second at Gosford behind Sacrosanct (Snitzel) earlier this month was much improved.
Mediterra is the eighth-foal out of the Charge Forward mare Traceability, she was unraced, but is well bred with plenty of Group 1 performers and stallions in her pedigree including Master Of Design, Danasinga, Suntagonal (Octagonal {NZ}), Tracy’s Element (Last Tycoon {Ire}), Typhoon Tracy (Red Ransom {USA}), Towkay, Kylikwong (Red Ransom) and Alligator Blood (All Too Hard).

Traceability has also had good success at stud leaving the South African Listed winner Traces (Snitzel), and the Group 3 placed colt in Spring Loaded (Redoute’s Choice).
Traceability since producing Mediterra, has left a yearling colt by Maurice (Jpn) that Arrowfield sold to Mitch Freedman for $200,000 at the recently completed Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, before she sadly died in September last year.
Mediterra was purchased for $500,000 by Cambridge Stud from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Wyong, Race 6, 4.05pm, AEDT, McGrath Foundation Pink Race Day Domeland Women’s Invitation Race B64 Handicap, $42,000, 1300m
Firework, 4-year-old gelding (Written Tycoon x Earth Angel {Animal Kingdom {USA})
Wyong’s Sunday meeting will serve as the venue for Firework (Written Tycoon) to chase his second career victory, after he won so well fresh-up this campaign at Gosford earlier this month.
This well-related gelding is the second foal from the Animal Kingdom (USA) mare Earth Angel, who was handy on the track winning once as a juvenile but she was classy enough to place in the G3 South Australia Fillies Classic, G3 Schweppervescence Stakes, Listed New Years Day Cup and the Listed Laelia S.

Firework’s second dam is the Champion Redoute’s Choice filly Miss Finland. She was a star on the track and amongst her 11 wins was success in the G1 Golden Slipper, G1 Oaks, G1 Australian Guineas, G1 Thousand Guineas and the G1 Arrowfield Stud Stakes.
She has since gone on to become a successful broodmare in her own right leaving seven individual winners with the best of these clearly being Stay With Me (Street Cry {Ire}) who was a three-time winner with her feature wins coming in the G1 Thousand Guineas and the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes and she has also added to this outstanding family and gone on to be a stakes producing mare with her daughter Waltz On By (I Am Invincible) being a dual Listed winner.
Earth Angel since producing Firework has left a 3-year-old colt by Street Boss (USA) named Valedor, a yearling filly by Dundeel (NZ), a colt foal by Dundeel, and was subsequently served again by Dundeel last spring.
Firework was a $200,000 purchase by Domeland Pty Ltd from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale
