TTR will publish the full results from the meeting in the next issue.

First SH stakes winner for St Mark's Basilica

First season sire St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) celebrated his first Southern Hemisphere stakes winner when John Blacker-trained unbeaten 2-year-old colt Aristopolos won the Listed Elwick Stakes at Hobart on Sunday. St Mark’s Basilica had three stakes winning juveniles in his first Northern Hemipshere crop, led by Group 1 winner Diamond Necklace (Ire). A Group 1 winner at two and three, St Mark’s Basilica is a son of Siyouni (Fr).

The Listed Elwick Stakes was won by Group 1 winner Mystic Journey (Needs Further) in 2018, and she was also unbeaten in three starts at the time. She went on to win six in succession at three including the G1 Australian Guineas and All Star Mile.

Knobelas to pay up for Group 1

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr will pay the late fee for the G1 Herbie Dyke Stakes with Knobelas (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) after her luckless third in the Aotearoa Classic on Saturday. “It's a $750,000 Group 1. I have a very strong feel that mare has a strong 2000m in her. It was a very good run (on Saturday),” Price told racing.com.

“So, we will chase that and see how we go. I think we should continue on. She should be thereabouts (in the Herbie Dyke). I've got a very good girl here. I know every inch of the training centre that we are at. Lance Noble has been great with his assistance; he has helped me not make a mistake. She's a lovely mare, she was born in New Zealand, she has come to Australia, and she is back in New Zealand.”

Can Future History make it four?

Ciaron Maher-trained Future History (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) has won three Listed races in succession and hopes to make it four in Monday’s Listed Australia Day Stakes. “He’s hit form, he’s full of confidence, the races have worked out well for him every time and he’s been very well ridden at his last three starts,” Maher’s assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord told racingnsw.com.au.

“It’s a career best for him but it’s a good time of the year. The races are probably not as deep. He’s had a busy prep, he’s had plenty of runs, and he’s a horse that takes a bit of work. He’s come through that race very well. It was only a small field and in the end, it wasn’t a hard run.”

Victoria Oaks winner set for Adelaide

Ballarat trainer Thomas Carberry will set G1 Victoria Oaks winner Strictly Business (Grunt {NZ}) for South Australian Group 1 races in April and May. “She's back in early work,” Carberry told racenet.com.au.

“We're looking at the Adelaide Derby and the Oaks as targets for the autumn. She didn't really have a tough race in the (Victoria) Oaks and it showed. She's her normal self and looks really well and has grown a little bit as well so all of the omens are good. We're looking forward to a very exciting autumn.

“She'll probably go to Caulfield in March and there’s a selection of races there. There's one on the 14th of March, the VOBIS Guineas, then the following week there's the Alexandra, the Alister Clark and the Sunline (Stakes). She could run in any of them and look to gear up for Adelaide. That's her autumn plan anyway and she's going well.”

Unspoken attempt to copy father

Jockey Chad Schofield hopes to win Monday’s Listed Australia Day Cup aboard Peter Snowden-trained Unspoken (Ire) (Territories {Ire}). His father Glyn Schofield won the race on Wazn (Ire) (Whipper {USA}) for trainer Chris Waller in 2012. “Unspoken has been running very well without winning but hopefully we can give him a good ride from a good draw and he gets his nose in front on Monday,” Schofield told racenet.com.au.

“He is always thereabouts and he looks to try really hard.” Unspoken ran third in the G3 Summer Cup on Boxing Day at his last start.

Bryant set for maiden win on Monday

Trainer Ron Quinton thinks there’s a big future for 3-year-old gelding Bryant (Brutal {NZ}) who was placed at two and resumes in a maiden on Monday. “He’s done some really good groundwork and had that good trial over 1050 metres,” Quinton told racingnsw.com.au.

“I didn’t think it was necessary to trial him again because I was satisfied with his fitness so I would expect him to run very well. We’re hoping that (he’s handy), he’s shown us nice ability on the track and in his trials and in that last race start.”

Double for Playing God at Pinjarra

On Sunday, Playing God sired a double at Pinjarra in Western Australia. Bruce Watkins-trained 3-year-old gelding God’s Cross won at his second start. A homebred, he is out of Peggie’s Louise (Oratorio). This is the family of Miss Andretti (Ihtiram {Ire}). His yearling half-brother by Maschino will be offered at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale as Lot 46.

Stefan Vahala-trained 3-year-old gelding Vatican Storm took his record to two wins from four starts. He was a $100,000 purchase by Kyle Sutherland at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, offered by Yarradale Stud. They will offer his half-sister by Gingerbread Man at this year’s sale as Lot 121.

New stakes winner for Sessions

WA sire Sessions added a new stakes winner on Saturday evening when 5-year-old mare Jaz Session won the Listed Scenic Blast Stakes. The Justine Erkelens-trained mare was coming off a two stakes placings in her last two starts.

Jaz Session now has eight wins from 22 starts and over $399,000 in earnings. She was sold by Misty Valley Thoroughbreds for $24,000 at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale to John Chalmers Bloodstock (FBAA) and Erkelens Racing.

Take The Rap set for Scamper

The Wagga Scamper on Australia Day will be earlier than usual with Monday’s meeting to start at 10am because of the forecast extreme heat. Canberra trainer Norm Gardner believes Take The Rap (Star Turn) can win the Scamper. “He is a lot more settled this campaign and his trial was good. It will be a lot different under race conditions and the speed on will suit my bloke,” Gardner told racingnsw.com.au.

“Pierre (Boudvillan) rides him most mornings when he is there and has put a lot of work into him.”

We are grateful for the swift response of emergency services, and she is now receiving the best possible care,” said the statement.

“Racing SA is providing her family with whatever support they need during this time. Please note that we are not currently in a position to provide an update on her condition, nor can we comment on the incident, which is being investigated by SafeWorkSA.”

Rispoli sustains multiple fractures in fall

Leading jockey Umberto Rispoli, who was thrown from his mount Unconquerable Keen (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) nearing the sixteenth pole of Saturday's Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint, was taken to the hospital and has been diagnosed with a fractured ankle, tibia and fibula, according to a post on X from his agent Matt Nakatani.

“This isn't the end of the road for us,” Nakatani wrote. “We will be back stronger than ever. We greatly appreciate all of your support.”

Nakatani posted that Rispoli will undergo surgery in the near future pending conversations with doctors. There was no immediate timeline for his return to the saddle.
